- The dissonant, underlying drone that haunts the first minute or so of Radiohead's "How to Disappear Completely" has always evoked in me a sense of sublime desolation. Recently, when thinking of the horrors of nuclear war, the opening of this song came to mind, and it wasn't long before I started thinking of related imagery from war films. During the height of the Cold War in the 1980s, two films had a profound effect on chilling public perceptions and changing political attitudes on the existential threat of nuclear war: The Day After (1983) and Threads (1984). Both were TV movies -- American and British, respectively -- and were thus broadcast to hundreds of millions of viewers. They were mass media events that instilled a collective sense of dread, quite the opposite of the standard purposes and expectations for prime time fodder. These films didn't entertain and distract audiences from the potentially scorching reality of the Cold War, but rather, broadcast the bombs and brimstone right into the (dis)comfort of their living rooms. These bombs really hit home. Although sometimes uncomfortable to watch, I have used imagery from both films in this video to complement my ambient take on "How to Disappear Completely" and to draw attention to these films and the cautionary tales they continue to provide. The opening and closing sequences come from a psychedelic scene in Altered States (1980), an underrated, visually-stunning gem directed by Ken Russell, written by Paddy Chayefsky (famous for 1976's Network), and starring William Hurt. This memorable scene is a near-perfect expression of the existential transience evoked in Radiohead's song and these nuclear war films, with the erosive winds of time and/or nuclear blasts rendering us down: ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

The Day After and Threads are both chilling reminders of the cold war era. The transition of imagery (and the music) from nuclear devastation to the Altered States imagery is amazing. The oval balancing rock just sticks in your memory.
Yes, the Cold War era and unfortunately our own. And yes, that graphic match transitioning from towering oval rock to nuclear mushroom cloud took many attempts to align!

Glad you like this track! It's a bit darker than most on the channel, but a fitting track for our times. And with Nolan's Oppenheimer in theaters.
