2 little kids once fought over who would get to judge me... this one guy who would clap and cheer for every solve I did even when I got a 20 on skewb... all this stuff happens to me all the time as well as other people with bigger channels. If you have any kind of presence in a comp, you will always be followed.
lol that happened in the finals round it was nationals style(2 people at a time) and two people were fighting over who would be the runner or judge :p (1 judge spot was already taken over)
At Norwich, 2x2 round 1 was the worst I had ever experienced. There were little kids swarming around, and were constantly saying before and DURING my inspection, "Go, Derpy!" and I hated it and it made me really nervous. Also I'm not saying that I have it the worst, I don't haha.
I’m not sure about the rules, but unless the rules state they need to be quiet, as a competitor you need to be able to tune those things out how does that every other athlete do it
i hope they make the 1.5m rule stricter. if they do then people may stop doing it. maybe this is just my opinion but what's the point of putting it in the regs when it constantly gets broken and no penalty is given out to anyone?
minx14/pyr14 ya - at my last comp, during multi, mark boyanowski was solving and everyone was crowding around him. A lot of people DNFed because of it.
Cubefinity I lost interest, it took up more than my life than I wanted. So I dropped it. I used to go by Cubing 101 and I was about sub 11. Probably had a promising future.
My biggest grievance from competitions is improper judging. I feel like many judges don't pay close enough attention to penalties like over-inspection or the way the timer is started/stopped. I also really don't like when after you start solving the judge starts solves their own cube or goes on their phone. It can be distracting, and it's their job to make sure you are following all the regulations properly when you are solving. Edit: One thing that also drives me crazy is when people slam their cube and hands down really hard to stop the timer; especially when I'm at the same table.
I was at a comp and someone was trying to practice blind and then little kid comes up to him and says "can i use your squan?" and he was just like yeah ok trying to keep his focus then this little kid comes back up with his squan during his solve and says "will you teach me to solve it?" so the guy puts his cube down, still calm, and takes off his blindfold and is just like "sure" and when he stops his time and puts his cube down this little kid, who just interrupted his solve, says "DNF" bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuh i was so surprised at how calm he stayed during this whole thing lol
That's why he made the video. He's clearly trying to make people aware of annoying behaviors that they might not recognize. His tone is a little harsh but he isn't trying to make anyone feel bad about themselves.
I once was in the middle of one of my solves and all of a sudden this guy just comes up to me just far enough away that it's okay with the regulation. But what happened next was ridiculous. He started yelling and cheering me on (by the way this was a random drunk person) and eventually the delegate had to come over and remove him from the venue.
Yeah that just kinda happens... if you leave out a cube or in your bag, someone will want to try it and they usually do not even ask you. I have been to 25+ comps so I’ve gotten used to it
I was at Big Apple Spring and Nicolas Naing broke the world record for megaminx single. I was in the middle of a 5x5 solve. I averaged around 1:50 at the comp but when everyone started to cheer and yell and be annoying, I got confused and distracted big time ( had like a 10 second pause to ask what was going on during the solve) and the solve turned out to be 2:14.47. Ruined the average for me. But I guess I couldn't have done anything about it.
Probably a little late to comment, but youre a dumbass if you say you couldnt have done anything about it. If you take the time to pause during a solve for any circumstance, then thats your fault and the cheering and distractions are things you need to accept may happen and focus on your solve, which you obviously didnt try doing.
In my experience this is bad. At my last comp the judge was speaking to me while I was solving and saying you are going to get a DNF! And in the end I did 1 extra M move. I did not do it on purpose. Thanks a lot for making this video and sharing it! Regards KarlovRead more Show less
I saw the worst thing ever... during the blind round a person was talking to his friend... no big deal... right?... well, actually the problem was that both of them were judges.
I really want the 1.5 meter rule to be better because I seen Feliks Zemdegs do some solves and a kid tried to look over his shoulder and see what time he got. I felt bad for Feliks cause he's trying to be the best at cubing!
Funny story... I was judging when Max Park got his WR (I think it was either 5x5 or 6x6) and the competitor, in the middle of his solve, comments something like "yeah, I'm just casually doing my solve in the background of a world record..." I wasn't quite sure how to react, so I just sort of smiled. Also, big pet peeve (for me) is when the judge is solving their cube during your solve.
One time I said "I messed up in PLL" or something like that after getting a bad time, and the judge warned me not to talk about scrambles. That doesn't give any information except that I, in particular, did not get a PLL skip. But I guess technically he was justified in that regard.
I'll never forget the time I waited 15 min to get called to my solving station because the judge didn't know what to do and he was busy eating and watching a movie on his phone 😂😂
This happened with a friend, so it was hilarious at the time and I still got a pretty good solve, but if it happened with anyone else it would be totally unacceptable. So I sat down to do 2x2, and my buddy was judging someone right next to me, and as I sat down, he said, "No need to be nervous, right?". He said it in a Kermit voice, so we started cracking up. As I was about to slam my hands down on the timer, he yelled out "Come on, that was the easiest solve ever! That could have been sub-1!" We both started busting a gut because I had gotten a 4-second solve, which is decent. I thought about it later and realized that if that had happened to anyone else that could have been really annoying.
HOLY CRAP THANK YOU. Especially competing in big cubes just is so annoying these days due to judges talking/shouting while I solve, which is terrible considering they're some of my best events.
at one of my comps, during my solve my judge yelled DNF refering to the station next to me, i ended up stopping solving and asking, why was that a DNF? He responded: he did not finish his solve. i did not realize that i could have gotten a rescramble.
I am really glad that you addressed this is because I have seen this before many people are very rude and sometimes people can just not now when to stop
I heard someone was trying to talk to feliks In a 2x2 solve and he messed up now it's 2x2 but people do this and my friend screamed sub 30 when derpy was going up to solve and I told him he needs to be quiet
In my experience this is bad. At my last comp the judge was speaking to me while I was solving and saying -you are going to get a DNF!- And in the end I did 1 extra M move. I did not do it on purpose. Thanks a lot for making this video and sharing it! Regards Karlov
One thing I have noticed multiple times is judges either talking to other judges or other people, or having one of their cubes with them and solving/practising with it during your solve
My favorite is when people go up to popular cubers to ask them questions that could be easily answered with a google search. "Do you have a world record?" "How did you get so fast?" [when they're clearly using CFOP or Roux] "What method do you use?"
this is a very serious video. i can tell with my own experience. in last comp , i did really good in 2x2 round one . idk suddenly in my last two or so solves a wave of cubers just come to see me solve and stand right in front of my table. to make it worse the table where i was sitting had very low light . the worst part is that they start talking right in the middle of my inspection and i obviously got distracted. at the end the result was a ruined solve
I agree. One thing I saw at my last comp was a kid literally leaning against Lucas Etter's solving station, and in the middle of Lucas' solve, he asked him, "What's your best average on clock?" as a joke I guess, and a lot of people (who were also breaking the 1.5m rule when watching Lucas solve) laughed at this, and if that were me, I'd get distracted big time.
I know personally one of my biggest pet peeves at competitions is competitors not coming up when their heat is called and they come up when the event is about to be over. It just slows down the entire competition and it's stress on the staff trying to plan out if they can add tentative events.
At the last competition I was at, when Feliks was doing a 3x3 average in the comp 25+ kids crowded around the back of his table (legit touching the table) and there were like 5 people recording him and a few telling him that if he got a good solve he would get a world record average. He ended up being distracted, and messed up the solve.
Another thing is that people just take cubes out of my bag. I went up to solve for some event, and when I came back, my bag of cubes that was under the table was literally empty with all my cubes spread out on the table with a bunch of people looking at them. Countless times, I come back to my table and there is somebody digging in my packed away bag where all my family's stuff is. It annoys the heck out of me. I almost lost a couple of cubes for that reason. It just doesn't make sense that people don't even ask you before digging through your stuff.
Well this is an extremely specific case but I borrowed a dragon costume for finals at a comp once just to relieve some stress for the other competitors. As I was walking to the finalists waiting area a young cube ran up and ripped the tail off. I mean respect any other cubers personal space.
Great video and you brought up some interesting topics. I will definitely be on the lookout for this stuff at my next comp. by the way, your audio is amazing.
The most annoying thing that happens to me is when people solve cubes while I'm solving (even though this was a friendly local non-WCA competition it was still kind of annoying)
I got a PB of 29.21 in Dallas Spring Open last week. Probably could have been sub 7 but some kids distracted me ;) lol. Joke aside, I agree with all of your points. I wasn't aware people went to that extent of placing cameras right on your table or next to you as you are solving. But I also agree with some of the comments that (fast) solvers need to speak up a bit and say "I'd love to chat, but right now I need my space to fully concentrate on my solve". Very good points throughout the video though. This needs to stop,
I went to a comp with Noah Arthur's and I didn't go up and ask him all these questions like I'm his biggest fan because I feel like that is just annoying to the person you are talking to. I just acted like I was talking to just another cuber and it was really cool getting to talk to him instead of "hey I'm a big fan! Can you sign my cube" and walk away. I got some pretty good 3BLD tips from him and hope to run into him again :)
That happened to this guy at the comp I was at. This 7 year old kid just started talking to a a competitor while judging. He said : omg double parity or something. Then he started taking people's puzzles and comparing them randomly. He took my stack mat and started telling me that it was not sensitive or something.
I was solving and the judge starting yelling out algs i had to do like "Okay here's a T perm" and 'Do a sledgehammer it's faster." it was quite annoying
I remember my worst experience with a judge was, she was a young girl (maybe 6-7 years old) and she was playing with her baby sister. I remember I was inspecting and looked at the stopwatch, it was at 13 seconds. I should have just inspected for like 20 seconds, probably would have gotten away with it.
Late, but at South Dakota First 2018, there was this kid who wasn’t competing but was there for fun. I don’t think he made some competitor’s day fun , like mine. He was literally EATING AS HE WAS JUDGING. He just ate some goldfish or some crap while doing my 5x5 solve. Then he just started talking to someone during their OH attempt. They got a resolve, fortunately
once during 2x2 someone asked me what go pro I was using during my inspection that was my 2nd ever comp and the first time that's ever happend to me didn't end up as a good solve
At Virginia Open Fall 2015 during BLD, people in the audience and at tables were very loud and it was hard for me and other competitors to concentrate. The hostess of the competition had tell tell everyone on a microphone to be considerate at speak quietly at least three times. Even at the Cubicle's table people were talking a bit too loud and Phil had to tell customers to be a bit quieter. It was quite hard to concentrate during the solves.
I've seen this too. Like once I was judging an OH final and the person who was sitting next to me was judging patrick and he was asking him all sorts of questions like which cube did you use to break the wr.
at nats 2018, I sat at the table with all the youcubers and legendary speedcubers. I wasn't even sub 20. I get embarrassed every time I think about it.
Hey Chris, I am an Honduran Cuber I am from Honduras and I want to tell you that I discover a great alg try doing this: (F, R, U, R´, U´)x5 U2 (r, U2, R´, U´, R , U, r´´) and you will have the big L case you will look at 2 same colors(orange) and one oppose(red),and the there is blue and green together, and then do this (r, U, R´, U, R, U2´)U2 (F, R, U, R´, U´) . I hope that you will look at this comment, if you use this alg in one of weekly videos I will be grateful.
I agree with everything except for the whole “people telling you to go get a world record” if it’s during a period where they are allowed to speak, it’s your job asa competition to be able to tune those words out just like every athlete does in every other sport
One time, I was competing in square-1, and I was on EP, and I had a z perm or whatever it’s called on square-1, so I started doing my z perm, and my judge said “oh an h perm” and so I was thinking “oh no I messed up!” So I undid like the 4 moves I had done, and then I realized that it was in fact a z perm and NOT an h perm, and so I had to redo it :( so I didn’t make the cutoff time
The WCA is designed to generate a family-friendly environment, and I feel that most of these comments and complaints could be improved upon or remedied simply through more strict enforcement of distraction-avoiding rules; or through increased awareness of individual competitors' focus. Competitors only get 5 (or 3) solves; ONLY 3-5 SOLVES. People drive, fly, sometimes sleep in hotels or motels just to visit and attend a competition, and you could very well be destroying the average of their favorite or most important event just by walking up to them or cheering during their 4x4 edge parity. Competitors already have enough pressure on them; just look at Feliks. I think the main reason Feliks doesn't do so well during some of his averages is simply because the sheer crowding of competitors makes him nervous, but Feliks is very nice, so he just lets them be. That's not okay! Like every competitor, Feliks' solves should be treated with respect. Don't clap, don't cheer, don't "freak out" until AFTER the average. It's not just polite; it's crucial to the competitor's performance. Also, the next time you see someone act up at a competition: whether they violate a regulation, speak too loudly or rudely, or whatever you observe with discomfort... don't pretend like it didn't happen, nor lecture them... but notify them that solves are important to cubers. We train for those solves, and people that interrupt solves are taking away from our time, from our lives. Cubing requires concentration; don't break that concentration. Sorry, but if Chris can upload a whole video about it, why can't I write an essay?
At my first comp (TOF2015) when Bill Wang was doing 3x3 there were at least 15 ppl who were clearly less than a metre away, i was watching at a decent distance but they were unnecessarily crowding him
At the compition I went to last weekend some kid came up to my table and literally went into my bag and picked up a cube and started playing with it and gave no consideration or manners that I was warming up for an event, so I had to tell the kid to not play with my cubes and it kinda sucks because I felt like a jerk after but either way it's really rude to touch someones cubes without asking
Once a guy was so excited to judge me for whatever reason and he lifted the cover on all 5 of my round 2 3x3 solves and that completely ruined the average. (He somehow ended up judging all 5 lol.)Then he didn’t count one of the penalties and the one he did ended up being calculated wrong with a plus 4.
Here is one to add: Try not to sneeze on the competitor. Speaking from personal experience.
Hehehe. Don't sneeze during your own solve either.

My brother talks to me while I'm solving ALL THE TIME and it's so distracting
I have a disorder so I'm extremely anti social in this enviroment(and all)
I saw people fighting in the Cubing Out Loud lineup for a purple Guhong lol
I was at a comp today and I was doing 5x5 solve and a kid says to me wanna trade
+Cyotheking Yes this is right! I will listen to you Chris
"Hey, if you get 1.25 seconds, you'll get a world record!"
Haha love that XD
At the last couple comps I've gone to there was like way to many kids making noise with their friends while there was blind solves going on
This is good for me because I haven't been to a comp so I can learn from this.
Going to my first competition in about a month, so this is pretty helpful things to keep in mind, ty Chris! :D
He took my stack mat and started telling me that it was not sensitive or something.
easy scrambles to fast people on purpose
Hey Chris, can't wait to see you at spring scramble 2016!
"If you want to film from back that's totally fine"
No it's not that's a terrible angle lmao
+asm2641 #SportStackingAnglesFTW
Filming more than 5 feet from the table is not a bad angle.
+cyotheking usually I can only get an angle with the solvers back covering the cube but that's just me :/
+asm2641 that's why you put the camera in front of them. Like for example on the timer itself
once during 2x2 someone asked me what go pro I was using during my inspection
that was my 2nd ever comp and the first time that's ever happend to me
didn't end up as a good solve
At Virginia Open Fall 2015 during BLD, people in the audience and at tables were very loud and it was hard for me and other competitors to concentrate. The hostess of the competition had tell tell everyone on a microphone to be considerate at speak quietly at least three times. Even at the Cubicle's table people were talking a bit too loud and Phil had to tell customers to be a bit quieter. It was quite hard to concentrate during the solves.
I know right!
That sneeze was perfectly timed
Tbh glad i saw this before my first comp
I got a pyraminx avg nr at a competition, and in the finale, there was this young judge who was talking to me while i was solving!
I once had a kid who was judging me and was solving while I was solving, and talking to his friend who was judging across from him
One time, I was competing in square-1, and I was on EP, and I had a z perm or whatever it’s called on square-1, so I started doing my z perm, and my judge said “oh an h perm” and so I was thinking “oh no I messed up!” So I undid like the 4 moves I had done, and then I realized that it was in fact a z perm and NOT an h perm, and so I had to redo it :( so I didn’t make the cutoff time
Hey chris at one of my comps there were people making cube towers during blind because there wasnt a room with quiet.
Bless you.
You didn't dab at 4:40. Shame.
+Tristan Yun lol
+Tristan Yun what do you mean? i dont get it
+RideRedRacer He sneezed, you have to dab when you sneeze or you're not cool.
ya i dont know what dab means.
+UselessnessToTheMax what does dab have to do with cubing?
When I went to my first comp there was a red line and you weren't allowed to go infront I thought all had that
You could just tell the delegate, get a resolve and the delegate can tell them to shut up.
I'm totally the bestest judge in the whole wide world... xD
And you have the "worstest" grammar as well.
Hahahahaha no.
Yeah my friends always are talking to me during solves
Once a guy was so excited to judge me for whatever reason and he lifted the cover on all 5 of my round 2 3x3 solves and that completely ruined the average. (He somehow ended up judging all 5 lol.)Then he didn’t count one of the penalties and the one he did ended up being calculated wrong with a plus 4.
