I just want to say that I really like watching your videos on blackberries. I also have Prime Ark Freedom berries and you inspired me to plant them here in Livingston, TX. I noticed the leaves curling up on one of the tubs a couple weeks ago and sure enough I lost it and am sure it was due to not watering. Other than that one plant, I have had an awesome crop this year. I've been putting up blackberries now for two weeks everyday. They are huge, a few of them have weighed over 16 grams and that is a big blackberry. Thanks again, may God bless you and keep making more videos.
It's so nice to hear that you're getting a great harvest.
I'm glad I could be of help,
alan
Looking good.
Thanks 👍
Yes sir looks like it will for sure be a better blackberry year than last.
Absolutely… Couldn’t be much worse 😊
What a beautiful and lush garden!
Thank you so much!
👍🏻 😊
I’m in Central Florida & our Prime Ark Freedoms have green, red, purple & black blackberries on them. Wish i could send you a video, but these are beautiful BIG juicy berries!!!
So glad you’re getting a good crop this year. My crop looks like the best in several years. Excited about it.
As I know you are 😊
Good stuff...
Glad you enjoyed it
Our blackberry plants in Conroe area TX looking great also. Heavy crop. Blessed indeed
Great to hear! 😊
I love seeing the new canes coming in amongst the old ones.
Absolutely.
That might be the coolest thing about raising blackberries. And they grow so fast!
👍🏻 😊
I’m getting excited … we have 1 blackberry about ready to pick on our prime ark freedoms! We lost a couple of loaded canes to recent storms. But what’s left looks pretty good.
We only have 1 blackberry plant. (Other two were trampled by dogs and mowed over.) I hope to buy more this or next year.
That’s great… You will love them!
i had this *exact* thing happen to me a couple days ago! It had rained so I didn't even think to water them.. but boy they needed it! And mine are all in smaller containers than yours lol. I'm up to about 35 varieties of black & rapsberries!
35 varieties…
I don’t see how you keep up with all of them 😊
I don't know why , maybe it's living on the coast but I am ahead of you on berry production this year , I have been harvesting for about 3 weeks already !
Wow, that’s amazing!
Enjoy 😊
This year been fantastic for blackberries for blooming my 1yr old Starbros Black Gem blooming like crazy massive amount for a small plant, the new primacanes coming up are even wider like a quarter size. Looking forward to picking them.
Sounds great. I hope I have been of help somewhat.
Yes sir . … that looks like black berry cobbler to me
Herd Dat 👍🏻😎
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, How do you control bugs?
I’ve started trying to use more organic products. Bug Buster-0 is what I’ve been using for the last couple of years. Works pretty well. But, for corn earworms I usually revert to the hard stuff, not organic.
Awesome my friend just wondering when you want more cuttings do you like bending the cane over and covering with dirt or taking cuttings and doing the dipping grow method better
The best success rate is always bending the cane over and planting the tip.
I have been binging your blackberry playlist, thank you for all the great information. I just ordered some prime ark freedom and I’m having trouble finding decent potting mix near me. Should I just follow the guidelines laid out by Earth box? We have Pro Mix BX, would you suggest that? Thanks
From what I can tell, the pro mix BX is very high in Pear.
That is good.
For a wicking tub to actually “wick” it needs to be high in PEAT.
So yes, I think that would be a good choice.
Let me know how it goes.
I am new to your channel and have really enjoyed all of your videos that I have seen.
I have some wild blackberry or they might be Dewberry plants I discovered growing under an oak tree that is very shadded since it has wild Mustang grapes growing in it. I am close to San Antonio area and our property is solid sand.
This is the first year that the 1st year growth (primocane) is growing long enough to start staking (almost 2 feet) since we used to mow over them. And last year saw a couple berries and realized they were blackberries plants!
I have a couple questions:
Should I move them in the fall to a sunnier location? Only 1 has partial sun in afternoon, the rest are full shade.
Do you plant north to south in your row?
When I transplant in fall to make a row, do I need to trim this years new growth so plant won't be stressed since they will be long?
I would transplant them in the fall.
N vs S shouldn't matter.
You might cut them back a little, but any berries next year will come on the growth you see right now, so don't cut much
Really appreciate you taking the time to reply to my questions.
Found out this afternoon that a few of the plants get afternoon sun and another gets morning sun so will start with those as beginning of my row and transplant others in the fall to fill in.
All of them are still pretty small plants except for a couple of the new canes that are long enough to stake. Found out Dewberries are just smaller version of Blackberries but with lots of thorns.
God bless!
I have one that has pink blooms too
I used the master blend water soluable fertilizer on mine
My Ponca blackberries have pink blooms also. And, it’s kind of nice to have all the different colors.
How do you keep the birds from getting all your berries?
I like what you're doing with your channel. Keep it up! 😊
Thank you, I will
Thanks for watching!
My Prime Ark 45 in a container is giving me a bumper crop this Spring. I'm in south Florida and I hand water regularly, all year. Although I am pleasantly surprised by the size and quantity of the berries, I'm less than impressed by their taste, or lack thereof. Is it possible that overwatering blackberries can wash out the flavor/sweetness? That happens to mangoes down here but never heard of it being a problem with brambles. My blueberries (three varieties are sweeter than ever and they get the same watering regimen. My Prime Ark Freedom, also in same sized container is lagging way behind in growth and fruiting so I can't compare taste yet.
I’ve never tasted a prime Ark 45 so I can’t compare either, but overwatering could be a way that theylose flavor.
I know grapes are like that. When grapes are under stress, like drought, they have better flavor… Or at least so they say.
Are your tubs full of dirt and mulch or are they self wicking. Also do they have holes for draining excess water.
These are wicking tubs. They DO self wick.
However, for the wicking process to take place, you can’t just use garden soil. You must use a potting mix with at least 50% PEAT.
Evening Mr Allen. My Prime Ark is so loaded down it broke a branch. I need to figure out a better trellising system. Lol. I still only have one and one ponca. I managed to trellis the ponca better because only one cane came up. But the prime ark is out of control lol.
Try building my trellis. Very easy, cheap, and it works really well.
@@BIGALTX You dont think thats too much for just one plant? I havent had a chance to propagate them yet. I had yours in mind when I got more mineral tubs and had more plants. What guage wire are you using again? I am gona go for it. Lol. I am just going to lengthen it as i propagate more. Thanks a bunch for the advice.
@@esmysyield2023 Just use 4 pieces of rebar, or Tposts and make a square of wire around the tub.
Run 2 strands of 17 ga elect fence wire
How many varieties do u have? I didn't know there r so many different varieties there r of thornless. Im trying Von, Sweetie Pie and Apache this year along with my Prime Ark.
I have three different varieties right now. Prime Ark freedom, Quachita, and Ponca.
Well none of my peppers have come back this year … guess they aren’t gonna … I might leave the hossinator jalapeño but I’m about ready to pull the others up…
I lost all mine too… Bummer.
I'm new to your channel. Where online do you suggest to purchase BlackBerry or raspberry bushes that are worth it ? I purchased some from Walmart and I still haven't seen any growth..
bobwellsnursery.com (10% discount using TP2 as your Discount code)
I've also used Nourse Farms and Stark Brothers
I've gotten some super nice plants from Ison's and Bay Laurel nurseries. Isonshad them on sale for $4.95 and were about 20" upon arrival
Mine are in the ground, not as nice as growth. 4/22 earth day, 38° in Grayson County Tx
I think we got down to 43. A little chilly for this time of year for sure. Hope yours do well.
Hi , i am from India , i have a commercial Dragon Fruit orchard with more than 100 varieties, i started with blackberries 2 years back , have 2 varieties,
one is thorny - fruits are big and heavy producer ,but little sour
Second is thornless but it haven't fruited yet
No good varieties here available
So i wanted to ask if i try to grow Blackberry plants from frozen blackberries that come from USA ( Just berries brand) can i expect some good results after 2 to 3 years ?
Thanks for your patience to read all this 😂
I’m really not sure. I’ve never grown blackberry from seed, so I don’t know if it’s possible to do that.
Certainly worth a try.
And, Greetings from Texas!
😊
@@BIGALTX Thanks alot sir 👍👍
Would do the same and see what would be the results, it would be interesting, as something is better than nothing ,
Thanks again and greetings .
I must've done something wrong. Already picked a quart bag full of ripe berries. Some are huge, some are so small. I have one plant that just hasn't grown well, berries are all very small. It's weird. I had previously fertilized, then sprayed with Neem, (the woollybears are eating them up). We'll see. It just seems really early to be getting so many ripe berries.
Well, it IS pretty early. Mine are just about to turn black too. I don’t think it ever has produced ripe berries this early in the year.
@@BIGALTX just went out to check and they all look sick....not sure what to do at this point. Last year I got 5 gallon bags of BIG berries. This year I'll be lucky if I get 1 gallon bag of so so fruit. I don't know if they have rust? or need copper? I'm at a loss.
I bought and planted 9 supposed prime arch freedom blackberries in the ground around April of 2023. Build a trellis just like you. I didn’t get any berries or blooms last year and this year I also do not have any blooms. Can you tell me what is going on?
What state are you in? I did the exact same thing. Planted 10 prime ark freedom in April 2023 in Virginia. They grew great, but only 1 bloomed - a single flower and a single blackberry. I have them set up with a water timer and soaker hose. It was set to water for two hours every other day. I think that was too much. I think two things were at play. 1. The first year the newly transplanted blackberries were busy working on establishing their roots and growing vegetation. 2. I topped them at 18 inches, and cut the laterals at 30 inches. This channel has a good video about letting those laterals go, so they fruit on the first year cane. Then you can trim it a couple inches behind where it fruited and it will send out more lateral, which will grow fruit in June of the following year.
Depends on where you are. It might not be time for them to bloom in your area. I am in zone eight, and we have had a mild winter… (Early spring)… So mine are a little early.
Absolutely.
Pruning is everything. The “experts“ say to prune them at 18 inches.
I prune them at about 3 to 4 feet. Then I prune the laterals… (Sometimes)… When they are 2-3 feet long.
Those that say prune at 18 inches are much more knowledgeable about blackberries than I am, but I just don’t understand the reasoning.
I’m in zone 9, houston. I haven’t pruned anything. They got compost the first year and compost again in the spring. The Canes that grew last year are growing new vegetation currently but not flowers. There are also new canes growing but only a few. Should I cut everything back and start over. Many caves are 10’ long espalier on the trellis.
I guess what I have could potentially fruit in June.
How many blackberries bushes can I plan in each tub?
One it will grow sooo big!
You only need to plant one. In one or two years it will fill up the container.
They spread inside the container like crazy.
Agreed 😊
great points. I'm sure them being in containers impacts watering much more. I know how it is in some of our tubs and raised beds. Appreciate your blackberry tips!
Of course it does. When they’re in the ground, they can always go down or reach out to try to find moisture. When they are contained, they are absolutely dependent on us, even if it rains. (Unless it rains really, really hard.)

Ha ha ha… Yes!
I appreciate your videos, man. I’m a new blackberry grower and I like your nuanced information.
Ha ha ha… I’m about his “nuanced” as you can get 😊
Do you have problems with birds on your berries?
Sure, but it doesn’t seem to be that great of a problem. I think it’s because I just plant more than I need, and they can get those share… I guess.
You can always hang some CDs or DVDs from a string by the berries. The sunlight reflecting off the disc is supposed to scare the birds away. I have done this in the past and think it was somewhat successful.
I did the same thing thinking the rain would take care of them but they were dry, I guess the leaves shed the rain away. I've got ne canes all over the place and berries everywhere, we picked 2 handfuls the last few days.
That’s great.
I would think I’m a week or more away from picking… But who knows, it could be much sooner 😊
