    Yah-soo Tasos, regarding the noise from the timing adjusters, it seems the best way to prevent it is too have fresh/thick oil like you recommend: 10w60 or 10w50.
    What I sort of understand is Benz designed the adjusters so they can bleed down pressure slowly...
    Old/thin oil bleeds faster than a new/thick oil !

    Hey how often to the exhaust adjusters fail? Do you think it's ok to just change intake adjusters?

    Hi Tasos Moschatos, I have a 2007 m156 ml63 and have been having a few issues. I went to the dealership today and they told me the intake and exhaust timing is out. Car is at 27° when it wants to be mid 30's or higher.
    Car has a tiny rattle on start up but is fine after that. Car shuts down and stalls randomly coming to a stop and freaks out and shuts down under heavy throttle. Idle is a touch off. But no error codes at all.
    I got quoted more then the car is worth to fix it so i went home and pulled the timing covers to verify. Both intake cams have a tiny amount of movement. Like the thickness of a thin coin worth of movement.
    I have spent all day trawling forums and watching videos and everything i have seen shows about 1/4 of a cam rotation worth of movement to show a tensioner failure and i am not convinced the tiny amount of movement plus the lack of continuous rattle is the cause of my issues. What is a normal amount of movement for these tensioners please? Just dont want to tear into the motor further to only find i was wrong. And i am unable to find someone who has had tensioner issues that has had the same problems as me. Can you shed any light on the issues at all?

    is it worth to pull off the timing cover to replace a leaking gasket or just wait tell its broken and do what just you did and flip the pins while changing the gasket?

    When reassembling the cam adjuster after flipping the pin, can we re-use the same bolts? What is the torque spec?

    Tasos can you confirm something for me, please? So about that cam adjuster rattle, I am experiencing. I contacted the Mercedes I purchased the car from. They are telling me that it should not have this issue because this issue was fixed in later year cars 2011+. Can you confirm if you have seen this cam adjuster issue in later year cars say 2012-2014s? I would really appreciate it if you could let me know your experiences since you have worked on so many. Thanks

    Tasos your videos are great and everything is explained to the full detail. I have an s63 and have the adjuster noise on every startup. On most startups its very low for anybody to notice but once in a while its quite loud. I changed my oil this morning after only 2000kilomters and its a lot better now. Question: how do i know if its the intake adjuster or exhaust adjuster? Secondly since i will be putting the bolt on the camshaft gear how will i remove it. And after removing it how to spring it back? Thanks. Is there an email i can contact you on?

      Isfand Ayaz thanks for your comment, 1st to remove the camshaft adjuster you have to just slide it out since you loose the 18mm main bolt, 2nd what kind of oil you are using?, 3rd repair all the camshaft adjusters ( make upside down the locking pin inside of the adjuster) and 4th my email address is tasosmos2@gmail.com
      another one think the last 5 years I'm using 10w60 full synthetic for the m156 i recommend this if you are living in middle East or in any warm country.

    i have a question i am hoping you can help me with . my cam adjusters were taken apart without a bolt or the backlash tool installed . question is can you or how do you realign the hole in the rear again?

    Hi there, great videos. Have a question, I have 2008 ML63 164.177 engine M156 with 188,000KM, few months back I noticed during cold starts I hear a load rattling noise, only lasts about 3-4 seconds or less, but it's Load. I went to Benz, I they are telling me it is the Timing chain and that they need to pull the engine out. I am not convinced. I have done plenty of research and also found Benz service bulletin S-B-05.20/20b which specifically talks to the noise I hear and like you say it is related to camshaft adjuster or possibly the lifters as well. I don't think Mercedes has diagnosed this correctly, and they want to charge me 35 hours labour plus parts essentially looking at $5-6000K for repair. I also plugged in a computer to check for fault codes, and found a stored fault code 0736 "continuous camshaft adjustment (left) incorrect position of the exhaust camshaft (P0023) clearly they would have seen this too, but still believe it to be timing chain? What are your thoughts. Thanks very much

      hi, the engine that I'm rebuilding right now has 180,000km, the timing chain, timing chain guides and tensioners can make another 100,000km easily. If you are lucky and your camshafts are healthy just make upside down the small pin inside of the camshaft adjusters and you are ok for another 180k km. Thanks

      Tasos Moschatos hi there, thank you very much for reply, very informative. Would it be possible for you to explain why that pin would cause the camshaft adjuster to make that rattling sound during startup, just so I have a clear understanding? Or perhaps another video to explain? Thanks very much. I do understand what you mean about flipping it, I just don't understand why that part would make that noise and how.

    Tasos, i have a question, we did pins on the cam adjusters but now we're having issues with rhs exhaust hall sensor (position sensor) and fuel pressure sensor. So the car is running really bad and misfiring cyl 1, Any thoughts? Thanks

      +Bill El Hassan the cam adjusters aren't same AUS=exhaust , EIN=intake.
      It's written next to the part number of each gear

      +Bill El Hassan thank you buddy 😁, the intake cam adjuster advancing and the exhaust retarding. Unfortunately you can mix it easily because looks same.

    hello, so you say on 3.50 that i can remove the broken camshaft adjuster which makes the noise and put this little bold upside down and the noise will disappear. So i dont need to replace the adjuster ?

      +Sweat Heart 93 exactly, I did that more than 100 times. it will be fine for another 80,000 km to 100,000 km ( depends how often you make an oil change)

      Sweat Heart 93 I forget to mention be careful don't mix the intake camshaft adjuster with the exhaust camshaft adjuster there are totally different. I mean one adjuster is advancing the camshaft and the other one retarding the camshaft. I did that 8 or 9 years ago , it Tooks me 2 hours to find my mistake 😁 the good thing is that even if you make a mistake the valves doesn't touch the pistons at least on idle

      Αναστάσιος Μοσχάτος ok thanks, i work on MB dealership, i changed one adjuster 2 months ago on a c63. it had a failure code and the MIL turned on. i didnt know that you can turn around that bold. i have a 10' c63 and if i have this weird noise from the adjuster i would try your way with the bold :)

    I just picked a 2014 C63 507 Edition a little over a week ago. I just noticed a slight sound on startup. I am assuming this could be the noise you are talking about here in this video with cam adjuster. What happens if you don't fix or flip the pin right away? How much time do you have before serious consequence arise? I barely noticed this today. The car has 49,000 miles(78,000 km) on it, isn't this kind of low for this issue to be arising already? If you could please shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it. We need some new videos as well. I like watching your channel. You always have such informative and great videos. I look forward to watching them. It has been a while since any new videos have been posted. Thank you and good day!

      SYNACK21 Hi, if you flip the small barrel now you have a good chances to save the cam adjusters, every time you hear the rattling sound at cold start the rear plate of the cam adjusters have more wear.
      Either you will leave it to come worst and then you will put new cam adjuster or you will flip the small barrel.
      I'm not uploading videos because the garage is full of cars and we are only two mechanics so no time for video.
