Watching from the other side of the world I am really impressed by the speed and skill levels of the NZ teams - on the flip side, the standard of refereeing is poor. Each week we see wrong decisions which are not corrected by the TMO. The UK teams could benefit from watching the NZ teams and the NZ refs from watching the English Premiership....

Honestly, there needs to be a deep investigation into the reffing this season in super rugby. The NZ reffing in particular (but also AU reffing) has been absolutely horrendous all year, to a truly scary and concerning degree. When it comes time to play in the NH this is really going to have a massively negative impact - the administrative bodies need to have a serious look at what is going on. Players get dropped for bad performances or suspended for illicit play - what to refs face for abhorrent performances? It may not be the case in NZ, but this is the kind of stuff that turns people away from rugby in Australia, in an already struggling market. For the sake of the game, there needs to be a real change in the quality of reffing. This game is the prime example of how unbelievably and embarrassingly shocking it has been this year.

Offside call was correct in my opinion. Ruck was clearly formed so offside line formed. 11 was in front of offside line and had to be put back onside before interfering with the game again. He didn't and acted from his offside position so penalty. It was in the 22 and really affected play so yellow was given. Am I missing something? Why would it matter if he was the tackler after the ruck had formed and he was on the ground, it wasn't like it was open play? Also not sure about the tackle selection/technique of the reds. They seemed to be going high a lot of the time and slipping off tackles too easy. Still, it might just seem worse as J. Barrett was tearing the place up (seemed like he was on a different level).
That ref is an idiot! That yellow didn't look like an infringement to me and I think the ref knew that he'd made a mistake but had to justify blowing up so sent the bloke off for the hell of it. And the penalty try that wasn't. I'm impartial so it doesn't matter to me, and probably wouldn't have changed the outcome anyway, but I just hope that ref never gets to ref an international.

In the context of the game awarding a penalty to the canes when the reds had defended their line and had just about turned over the ball I think meant it was a long way back from there. Plus there was no conclusive evidence they weren’t trying to ground the ball later on

Some of the rugby unions rules are foolish, the team who is defending primarily role is to stop the ball from being scored so they will do whatever they can do but it shouldn't be dangerous to the attacking player but to award penalty try for the ball being knock back into the goal line is foolish, as well as players getting sin bin for for intercepting the ball and knock it on, shame to whoever implements this rules in the first place.

Went and looked at repeat viewings of card incidents and the ref got it right both times. Offside player, on the ground, makes tackle in the 22 while Canes hot on attack. Cynical, got to go. Second one, the reds player is not in any way setting up to put the ball down first and was going for the push. He knew it and so did the officials. Super cynical, had to go & penalty try. Good reffing and cue the Michael Cheika wannabes who throw them arms up and make stupid victim faces with their excessive number of wobbling chins.
