Huge 8.8-litre V8 March 717 rumbles up Goodwood hill

  • The humongous March 717 is almost as big as the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard hillclimb and is powered by a ridiculous 8.8-litre Chevrolet V8. A development of the 707 there is only one 717 in existence, designed to race in the formidable Can-Am championship back in 1971 #FOS #V8 #CanAm

Naturally aspirated engines with nitro injection need to be big to compete with forced induction machines.
An elite NA engine for Pro Mod would typically be around 864-950 cubic inches, or 14-15 liters. There are some above 16.

I'm a Pontiac man through and through. I bleed Pontiac blue. I have to hand it to the chevrolet engineers. They built powerful engines at an affordable cost. You put a pontiac and chevrolet engine side by side on teardown, there's no question which is stronger and more durable. Pontiac! You can almost set your watch by when a chevrolet valve cover will start leaking oil and the #7 cylinder will start fouling plugs. But damn.....you can coax so much power out of a BBC with not a lot of effort or money. The secret sauce was the canted valve train, big vales, and the intake ports angled for a straighter shot of air. Chevrolet even marketed this back in the 60's as a "Turbo Fire V-8". The Chrysler hemi will always reign supreme in that era's V-8s due to its structural integrity but it was a complicated and expensive design. The BBC wasn't any more complicated than the SBC and probably didn't cost a lot more for Chevrolet to manufacture it either, over the SBC. A high compression BBC with square port heads and 4 bolt mains is a serious street machine. In modern tune with stud girdle, roller rockers, roller lifters, cross bolt mains, and over sized valves; it's a beast.

It's a 50-year old, one of a kind chassis. The aluminum big block Chevy is one of less than 100 ever produced from a very special alloy and doesn't have cylinder liners. The company that built it and the series it raced in both no longer exist. The drawings, tooling, parts, and people to produce a vast majority of this car do not exist. It is the definition of priceless, irreplaceable, and irreparable. The man who owns it can afford to lose it, but the real value of the car is for us to see and hear it at speed; even if it's only 90% that's better than 0% if some moron goes full-send and puts it into the wall. There's hours of CanAm footage out there if you want to see them really have at it.
