Juvenile WESTERN HOODED PITTA (Pitta Sordida Muelleri), Borneo

- Unlike the migrant subspecies ( Pitta Sordida Cucullatta) with its brown crown & black mask , this Hooded Pitta subspecies ( Pitta Sordida Muelleri) found in Borneo spots an all-black head.
This little fellow is a juvenile, as evidenced by its gape flange, whitish throat & creamy-brownish underparts. Its creamy-brown underparts with uneven splashes of green will eventually turn all green as it matures.
Hooded Pittas forage on the ground, seeking out worms & insects.
They are locally common in Borneo, but being nomadic, meeting them is a chance encounter as their local movements are poorly understood.
Besides Borneo, this subspecies is also found in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java & South Philippines.
