  • An update of what to expect in new higher quality printers. Will Canon's product announcements mention anything new? Is it time for higher end ink-tank printers.
I'm asked about this a lot, so here's an update - if you need a printer, buy a printer...

Thanks for your video. Your observations are very helpful and confirm what my gut feelings were telling me - we don't get new printers very often and when we do the changes in final print quality may not be significantly better. What does interest me is that manufacturers seem to give us the product they want rather than perhaps what the customer would ideally prefer. The Epson 8550 seems to be alone in having cost-effective eco-tanks which appears to make it almost Hobson's choice for those who want to keep costs reasonable.

Ah, customers want a six foot wide printer, with pigment and dye inks, ink tanks with replacement bottles at $1 each, they want roll support and they want it in a compact desktop format. Oh and it has to print quickly and take a stack of any size media. Having had some involvement with requirements analysis and marketing in the past, customers want all the above for under $100...
      Whilst I don't disagree with you... ;-)
"What customers want" is a will-o-the-wisp and I always think of the car Homer Simpson designed...
Definitely curious as to what their next step is in this area though!

@@KeithCooper I take your points! My requirements would just be for a A3+ printer (dye or pigment) using bottles retailing around £700-800 without scan or copy. i.e. I want to spend the money on the printer and not superfluous elements that I don't require. I also want replaceable ink pads and ideally something that doesn't leave ink messing up the printer when printing borderless. I don't believe there is a printer on the market that meets these simple needs!

Hi Keith , your video content is often way beyond my intelligence ( photography experience ) . Can I just say , as a learning photographer I purchased a used Canon pro-1000 at great risk on ebay ! Purchased a full set of inks , did all the checks and all was good . The prints I've produced from this are exceptional to date . The ability of this printer is way way beyond my photography skills so won't be looking to upgrade ever ! ! ( well not in the next few years )

ahhh thanks for all your information! I have been looking at the Canon Pixma Pro 200 and was worried if I bought one it would be obsolete before Iw as ready to update! Your expertise gives me the confidence to move forward with the purchase and a bonus to find it on sale!

It's a bit pedantic perhaps but framing "old" tech as obsolete just because there is a -often only marginally improved- new version out is something that I find very counterproductive especially in the world of creative gear.
So long as it works well and you can get papers and ink and operate it, a printer is not obsolete, much like a Sony A7 III or an X-T4 isn't obsolete just because a new model has been released in the same product line. Nitpicky I suppose, but unless there is word that somehow your product will become inoperable or you're waiting for a make-or-break feature, don't put too much weight into upcoming releases. The quality of existing features rarely improves enough to meaningfully miss out, generation on generation.

@@JennyDarukat No argument here - I used my Canon 5Ds [2015] for some work recently, and these videos are shot on a 2019 EOS RP with a 1986 Olympus 24mm f/2.8 manual focus lens...

@@JennyDarukatThanks you for assuming my research for a new printer to be pedantic. I try very hard to not take part in a throw away society, however have reached a place where I a trying to research my next printer. My old printer no longer plays with my current computer efficiently, it has served me well for many years. My comment was not made because I want the newest, shiniest printer, it was merely an mental observation that so many systems are using refillable tanks and I did not want to jump into something that will not be supported for many years. Thank you for hopping on your pedestal to inform me, maybe you need your own UA-cam channel, until then I will digest Keith’s invaluable knowledge and information to make a decision that is best for me.

I have got the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, which is a great printer. However it has 9 catridges that now cost £55 each. I find that this is far too expensive.
I know that some people are now using compatable cartridges for the Epson Stylus Pro but following past experience, I am wary of non genuine ink.
To reduce costs for A4 printing I bought a Canon Pixma G650 Ink Tank Printer, which I find is really good and is cheap to run. With the right paper mono is also very good.
I do have a need to also print quite a lot of A3 prints and am looking for an A3 version of the G650. However, it seem that the only printer that currently fits that role is the Epson ET- 8550.
Come on Canon an A3 version of the Pixma G650 would be ideal.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  20 днів тому

For myself an A3+ version of the G650 would be just as useless from a colour management POV unless Canon provide a proper driver for it.
There is nothing to match the et-8550 for the time being

Thanks for the update Keith - I have the Pro-1000 - is it typical that Canon will continue to update the Driver's when there is an update of operating system (Mac) ? - they seem to have hidden the current driver for the Pro-1000 on the Canon website - its still there but you need to search for it. Will also be keen to learn if the new Lucia Inks will be made available for the Pro-1000.

      Thanks
Updates for a while I'd expect
The new inks will absolutely NOT work in the PRO-1000 - the changes in composition could easily cause reliability issues.

Hi Keith, thanks for the video...I have been using an Epson P800 for the last four years. It's been faultless so far. I only print mono through the Epson ABW driver. I never heard anything about this model of printer, was it short lived as a model? I purchased mine new.
    Thanks,

I'm currently on the lookout for a printer.. hopefully under 300€ in Germany availability.
I want something with at least 300ppi.
Nice colors, doesn't need to be 100% accurate, I spent a lot of time in Lightroom and Photoshop but I really don't care if it's 10000% the same after I printed it, as long as its beautiful:)
Low running costs, I only print for myself to be honest. But I just don't want to go to a local store or order them online, sorry but that's not me, want to finish my work on the desk and leave happy and satisfied.
Print larger than Postal card size (10x15cm). I bought the Selphy CP1500 but whilst the size is very beautiful and sort of a standard photo size, I'd just love them to be a bit larger. But I don't care about HUGE prints, obviously that I'd want to outsource as well.
Also just being able to print a document when you really have to for some reason would be handy.
Estimating I'll print at most 3-5 times a month for about 25-30 images.
I don't know if that wish printer exists for me or if I should just stick with the Selphy. Ah if only I'd print one size larger I'd be super happy. (And if the windows compatibility was a bit better...)

@@KeithCooper I'm with you on that. After wtaching your 8550 guides and impressions I'd appreciate Epson adding new softwarefunctions. Like more diverse modes that make better use of the pigment black or advanced greyscale printing b&w. But that would be cannibilazing from their other, more expensive lineup, i guess. But until updates happen or until the next printer to buy, i'll be able to manage thanks to your insights! :)
