A new 'best printer' to recommend? Epson P20500 [P20570] and other Epson/Canon printers expected

  • Why my 'best' printer is getting updates. Where is that PRO-1000 replacement and what's new in ink tank printers. Update on what's expected.
What printers can we expect this year? Will we get working colour management on Canon ink-tank printers on the Mac? Will we see any replacements for higher end 13' printers

Good job, Keith. I follow your channel. Very instructive. I see you are announcing some new printers and I'm not sure which one I should buy or wait for a new one.
    Please advise.
My intention is to often print (and rarely sell) calendars (large and small format), posters, postcards, greeting cards.
Everything should be printed on paper that can be written by hand with a ballpoint pen.
Some works will need photos taken with a 24MP and some with a 45MP camera - do you suggest a 17'' or 24'' printer.
My budget starts from P900 - Pro1000 upwards...
    Any advice is welcome.
    Thank you in advance.
    P.S. Keep it up.

Thanks, but no - you do not see me announcing any new printers other than the P20500... ;-)
Look at the main written review for the P900 - bigger printers don't print borderless or on smaller size media.

Interesting if this new ink pack system will prevent the occasional ink cartridge errors on the P9000/P7000/p5000... assuming itll be passed on to the smaller units in some way.

Not sure if the external inks enclosure is likely for the smaller printers - but some form of move away from carts is being pushed...

If you have the opportunity to test this Epson P20500 printer, try loading the paper in particular. I have a P20000 and it's very difficult to use the roll ends, especially on the 60 inch canvas rolls. When there are about 24 inches left and you don't want to throw them away, the P20000 starts loading, then detects the end of the paper and refuses to load it. In this case, I turn the canvas 90° and try to feed it in like a 24-inch roll, but it's very difficult to align it correctly and you often have to try several times to get it right. I'd like to know if the paper loading has been improved.
I'd also be interested to know how the paper leaving the printer is handled. Nowadays, I either use the rewinder or I collect it by hand, as the cloth receptacle is not practical in my opinion.
In addition, the P20000 has one flaw that I don't think will be improved: the fragility of the prints and of the matt black in particular. I understand that the inks are the same... When you print in matt black with the P20000, you absolutely must not let the substrate come into contact with anything, otherwise it leaves a mark. It would be interesting to confirm this.
One final point that interests me: ink collecting blocks, those big boxes containing sponges into which the ink you've paid a fortune for is poured each time you clean your head. Are we still using the same system? I get annoyed every time I have to throw away one of these boxes full of ink...

Thanks - that's a good set of things to check. I'll make a note of this, but if you want to email me at Northlight Images, with any specifics, it would be very useful, since it's likely to be into the Autumn before I get a chance to try the 20500

Very healthy, to come across someone critical, voicing sound expectations.
BTW perhaps you have an up to date knowledge about how these Epson inks compare to "equivalent" sets by Canon or others, in regard to stability to time, UV, and to other challenges,
and regarding density of black inks (when compared on same MAT paper, same photo).
Perhaps also, regarding bronzing on barytas.
(although I might consider again using Hahnemüle "spray-coating") ?
      😊

Thank you! Honestly there is no need for a new version of the Canon ipf-1000 Pro.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  2 місяці тому

Depends... There are aspects of its serviceability for example, and the amount of cleaning required, as opposed to the same print head [used in the 2000/2100] and now used in the new PRO-2600. Add that to the new ink-set in the pro-2600 and that 'no need' becomes thinner...

Hi Mr Cooper, was wondering between the Epson L6170 and the Canon Maxify GX2070, which do you think is better for photo printing? Both these printers are in the $400 range. There is almost zero reviews on the canon gx2070.

Hi, not to be rude but why from what I looked at on your channel you seem to cater for people who can afford to buy fancy (for want of a better word) printers, I have an Canon IX6850 (approx £180 lowest price) and as an amature when it comes to printing this I hope will suffice, however trying to find expert advice on printers in this price range is like trying to find the pot of gold, please can you look at printers in this price range and make a video for amateurs like myself? Thank you.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  2 місяці тому

Fair point... I'm afraid it gets close to being a deliberate policy for several reasons...
My cut-off is generally not price but how good the printers are - but a key point to note is that I also do this stuff primarily because I enjoy it, not for profit. The YT channel supports our pro photography business - part of that is bespoke 1-to-1 training and that is not cheap. We have two prices - 'Full price and Free' ... this is the 'free' bit ;-)
The lowest range printers I've tended to look at are ones like the G550 ink tank printer or something like the XP960 from Epson. Smaller cheaper printers become increasingly difficult to compare, or give honest evaluations of [I use Macs and many low end Canon printers don't support proper colour management or printing with icc profiles on Macs], and when I get good results from them using custom printer profiles, it's not necessarily helpful of me to point out that I managed it with £4k of profiling hardware and software, but you could do it yourself for a 'mere' £500.
It's also worth noting that I only ever get printers on loan from Canon/Epson, so it depends on what they have 'new'. I simply cannot afford to buy stuff just to test.
Sorry, but unless someone sends me some of these 'cheaper' printers, it's not the sort of stuff I'll be covering on a printer specific review basis - I will cover all sorts of other aspects of photography/colour management though.

@@KeithCooper Thank you for your reply, it makes a change that someone on YT can take the time to do so, understand that you cannot do request videos if you don't have this kind of printer, just moved over to a Mac system from Windows and can agree about what seems to be on Apples part in a lack of effort into the printing side of things at the moment there seems to be after the last OS release a problem to be able to set a print size larger than A3 from Lightroom. Thanks again.
