In this video I share my tragic, unforgivable mistake of leaving my camera at home exactly once, and what I did to try to fix the problem. I discovered, shockingly, that the perfect pocket camera for me, for street photography, photos of my friends, and more, was actually the Canon Powershot G7X. A point-and-shoot with a one inch sensor, a big zoom range, and an even bigger heart. The photos kinda look like film. And it's got a built-in flash! Wherever my Nikon D750 can't go, this goes instead.

I stumbled upon your channel and had to subscribe. I bought a G5X in 2016, all 8 hard corners are bashed in, the screen is cracked, the dial on the back is broken, I tripped over my dog and fell into the swimming pool and it still works. I also have a Canon M10 and M200. All these are "unpopular" cameras on you tube but they work, they take pictures. I bought the M200 because auto focus on the M10/G5X is slow, but how often do I need fast autofocus? I am not a professional photographer and my photography proves that - I believe that content trumps a perfect image every time. Thanks, I needed to see this!

I was out in Vancouver last year and I had ran out the hotel to grab some McDonald’s, so I left my camera in the room. When I was walking back from the hotel I found a lady dressed like Carmen SanDiego…! I found Carmen SanDiego and I have no proof.
Since that day, I always bring my camera with me… everywhere I go.

I grabbed a shot of a lady walking a pig in a skirt down the main street of Mexico city back in October. Very happy I had my GRIII on me, I've never been too worried about carrying a compact off-camera flash in my other pocket/hand since it's very one-hand operational. I also bought my wife the G7XII way back when, so she can zoom 24-105 to capture anything about.
I used to carry my 5D, my a7RII, my X-T2 everywhere because I thought I needed it, turns out compact cameras are great quality. So I don't need them.
A lot of people can survive with their phones, but I need dedicated buttons, optical zoom, and flip selfie screens sometimes - not to mention decentralising my hobbies from my phone, it's notifications, and single battery to do everything in the day. Plus, personally I don't like the inorganic crunchy computational look, and neither does my wife.
Great video, mate. Love the energy and storytelling here.

This video came out when I needed it most, I think the a6100 might tick the boxes for this as well while having the option for interchangeable lenses, but I think the kit power zoom lens makes it look like a slightly bigger point and shoot, because I think those high end compacts are very expensive still when you can find sony APS-C mirrorless with their kit lenses for around that price. And it has a built in flash

    • @huntercreatesthings

100%, the a6100 is a banger of a camera! Only thing is that it is just slightly bigger, which means I'd have to get with the times and start wearing baggier trousers so I could fit it in the pockets haha

I long ago considered the Sony RX100 VII for the reasons you talk about here. It’s pocketable and has a 200mm equivalent zoom. I went down the path of buying better gear and now find myself more and more interested in just getting the random shot and embracing the imperfections and the compromises.

Yes, quite a capable camera! I use a Canon G5X as an edc, because I like to shoot via viewfinder and less via screen. If so, the G5X offers a fully articulated screen - a big (!) advantage in much situations when using the camera "off eye". The only downside is the slow fps speed of 1.2 fps when shooting raw (in jpg the fps is good enough with 7). Besides the evf the G5X offers dials, dials and dials - perfect for shooting in quickly changing situations.

They are a great deal less expensive too. You can carry these around all the time and not be afraid of losing something as valuable as the XQ1 is.

I went down the same rabbit hole some time ago, but came to the conclusion that the tradeoffs of a small camera would put it so close to just using my phone to take a quick snapshot that that is what I now do. The phone may not have physical controls in the way an actual camera would, but that just makes it more of a point and shoot experience.
The powershot does look good though!

Not the same problem as you (I'm not THAT enthusiastic about taking pictures of everything!!! ;-) ) but I've been looking for a good camera (photo+video) "to go". I settled for the Sony A7cII. It's much bigger than your choice of course. But I didn't want to make more compromises. Gonna hang it on my belt or shoulders with the 28-60mm lens on it and that's pretty good.

Small format with long zoom can be the ideal B (or C) cameral. Sensor size (as far as I am concerned) is secondary to on the spot flexibility.

  • @raymeedc

Ditto! I learned from experience to always have a camera with me, for whenever I don’t, even just walking to the local grocery in familiar territory, as often as not EyE would come across a shot I might’ve gotten had I had the means to do so at that moment.
I too was reluctant to go with a 1” sensor, instead opting for my Fujifilm X-E2 with either the pancake Fujifilm 27mm or their minuscule, light as a feather, vastly underrated plasticky 15-45mm zoom.
I realized, after much research concerning size, that in order to get an actual pocket sized camera that I would have to give one a shot.
My choice was much more limited than yours, as camera without a viewfinder is a dealbreaker for me, & the majority of very compact cameras don’t have viewfinders.
Taking that into play, I wound up with a used Sony RX100IV, with a wonderful Zeiss f1.8 24-70mm equivalent lens, popup EVF, built in flash, & just fits into a vintage Pentax soft lens case that hangs flatly from my belt loop….. & takes surprisingly fine photos considering the sensor size.
I still carry my Fujifilm X-E2 or X-T1 most often, but when I can’t or shouldn’t be carrying a camera for whatever reason, , I always have my Sony literally by my side 👌

& not giving a hoot about video or action photography or Bluetooth, the model I bought was a few generations old. Not only did that save me a ton of money, as most of the advances in the later models are to those ends, what I “lost” in not buying a newer model is lost on me. Not only that, but the newer models have a slower superzoom, both differences detriments to me, so I hit my sweet spot with this one.

This is my philosophy and why I’ve literally always got a Fuji 55-200 on me as I’m walking through target. Film was always a disincentive to actually take the shot-what if we run out of?
Your d750 issue is REAL-it’s big. It draws notice. But you’d be surprised how much I get away with just going a little bit smaller and desensitizing everyone to it. And because it says “fujifilm” on it, people just assume it’s film and don’t care any more because they figure it won’t end up online.
Maybe in Europe where there’s still journalists people are more sensitive to cameras.
Regarding your canon: dang, that’s a fast lens. And the internal ND? Honestly it looks small enough to go on a phone gimbal…

seems to be a good option for a pocketable street photography camera, but don't you think that for the same money and size one could still find a one with a bigger sensor and a built-in flash? like say a M43 camera or even an APS-C small one? like say a Nikon Coolpix A that has a flash and an APS-C sensor? or a Sony NEX camera with a built in flash and a pancake lens like say NEX 3n paired with Sony 20mm f/2.8? or even the Canon eos M100? they are affordable with built-in flash but still featuring an APS-C sensors and could be pockeable as well...just my opinion...

    • @huntercreatesthings
      @huntercreatesthings  3 місяці тому

You definitely could - but the small sensor makes literally no difference for my use cases, plus the big thing: Focal Length. Having the one inch sensor means it's much easier to pack in that big zoom range, where on a bigger sensor there would be more compromise in optics quality/versatility. Plus, this camera happens to be here already :p
