on, I need your help bad. I am going to be cruising on the Norwegian Joy and we are going on the cruise to New England and Canada. We end our cruise in Quebec. My family is actually from Quebec. My great grandparent was born there too. He was from Montreal. So we are disembarking in Quebec City but want to travel to Montreal. We found a car that we can rent for the four of us but the pick up is at the Quebec Airport. Because we are in Quebec City, isn't there cars there that we could rent? Also, if we wanted to take the train, is the train station in Quebec City. Please help us find a way to get to Montreal. Thanks
I was a travel agent for 17 years and I'm a seasoned cruiser. This video provided a wealth of information. Don, thanks for putting out great content. I hope you're viewers get alot out of this video.
I have been vacationing on cruise ships since 1967. I cannot remember a single cruise vacation I would characterize as “The worst cruise ever.” But my parents taught me we all make our own fun. It’s not the responsibility of anyone or anything to ensure you have fun. And honestly, what’s not to love about cruise ships. Can’t wait to book another 😊
Hi Don, Along with #3, keep ALL your travel documents in your carry-on and NOT in your checked luggage. Then, as you approach the terminal building on embarkation day, have all that documentation in your hand. Your boarding process will be much smoother than those poor folks who are holding up the line or taken off to the side so they can "dig for the docs".
Two years ago, my mother and I were cruising to Mexico. We were on the plane and had pulled away from the gate to go to LA. Then spent three hours on the tarmac. In the end, our flight was canceled and we missed the cruise. We were able to meet up with the cruise ship two days later in Mexico, because I was smart enough to buy the insurance and princess booked us on flights and helped us find a hotel. Ended up being a five day cruise instead of a seven day cruise but we learned 1) always have the insurance, 2) fly down the day before. In the end we were reimbursed for the ship days that we missed and for an excursion that we missed. We were lucky. And learned from our mistake.
I also recommend that you double check all your booking information for your trip. For instance that the correct spelling of passengers names and dates of birth have been recorded and they match your travel documents, i.e. Passport, visa, ect. Print out all your travel documents as backup to saving electronically and keep them accessible in your carry-on until you have boarded the ship.
I appreciate the tip about scheduling a flight out so close to debarkation! I was planning to do just that. Instead, we'll just book a night at a hotel. Makes a lot more sense than the stress of possible missed flights!
We always book a night at the airport hotel so that we dont have to worry about getting to our flight on time. We also book our flight to the departure port a few days before embarkation. We live in an area that has winter weather and bad weather can happen any time anywhere. We spend at least 3 days on the departure port and we enjoy being tourists exploring.
When packing for a cruise as a couple or family don't put all your clothes in one case. Hubby and I always put full sets of clothing shoes toiletries etc in two different cases rather than one for him and one for me. That way if a suitcase gets lost both of us have still got full sets of clothes to wear
I have cruised for more than 10 years, but find I still learn from your videos. I definitely always buy insurance because of you. I haven't needed it yet, but I do feel safer. Thank you for your hard work to make cruising better.
We always purchase insurance. We used it once. Our return flight to Chicago from Ft. Lauderdale was cancelled because of a snowstorm in Chicago. Insurance paid for our meals and accommodations.
We were on a Mediterranean cruise and we had to change one of the ports. But the alternate port proved even more fascinating. By being flexible we had a wonderful time.
Actually it took over 4 hours to get off the ship and onto a surgery table , so my heart was severely damaged. But I thank you so much for asking. The med staff on the ship were Absolutely wonderful treating me with so much tenderness.
The trip insurance paid for all of my medical expenses plus reimbursed me for the cruise the days I was not on the ship, also my travel back home. You must be diligent with them and have all your receipts to get your money back. Make sure to contact the cruise line and get all your documentation from them and all receipts.
Love the tip on the sunrises and sunsets. Missing a port would not be an option for me. I do like coming back to the ship for lunch and spending a few hours onboard during the stop.
I agree with all your points. You have to be able to roll with the punches. (In everything in life). If not you could be miserable. It’s all about attitude!
I love to watch the sunset from the aft of the ship. I get myself a drink, grab a lounge chair and watch/listen to the wake while the sun is setting. Heaven!
I am a tourist not a vacationer. We just got from a B2B, 19 day and 18 excursions ports trip. We did 3 nights in London and in parts of those 3 days logged nearly 13 miles on foot walking around city. That was the most excellent trip and loved every minute. Next year we are taking it easier. Only 15 shore excursions in 24 days. That is what we like to do. I will rest up when I get home.
You look like you’re feeling pretty good & you sound as great as ever, maybe even better! So glad for you, Don. Praying God keeps you here in earth for a long time, you’re an inspiration to many.
Thank you for those reminders Don. We are going on our second cruise in about 15 days and we have to remember to relax and just go with the flo. So glad to see you doing better.
I agree on the drinks . . . I drink about 1 drink every 45 minutes,. starting at 10 am going until 10 pm . . . every day. So the drink package works for me! But there aren't many people I know that drink like me. Love the channel.
I can attest to the insurance need. I was cruising to Alaska and got blood poisoning with a 106 fever. I had to be taken off the ship in Canada and was in intensive care for 1 week. Cost 35 thousand dollars plus plus plus. Insurance is a must no matter how healthy you are!
i have seen the most stunning sunsets that i will ever see in my life off the aft of a cruise ship :) i will never everr forget how i felt watching my first sunset on my very first cruise :) i was totally wowed :)
Thanks Don!❤ #1 get princess protection and EZ Air and transfers to ship. Then princess will know about your flights, where to pick you up and cover you if anything goes sour. #2 carryon luggage, use carryon bag and backpack for trip to port; check bags on the way home if needed. #3 take sea sick pill before ship leaves port and every night before bed. #4 drink plenty of water, stay hydrated. #5 tip in cash to the crew you personally interact with. #6 don’t purchase packages, buy a La carte. I doubt the total cost will exceed package price. #7 Order morning breakfast room service with order card in room before bed. I believe the latest is 10-1030a. #8 bring container for hot/cold beverage that seals well. These are reminders for myself that might to useful to others🎉😊
#11 Be sure to pack your patience! You're on vacation, go have fun! Don't sweat the small sh*t! :) #12 Always remember: A "bad" cruise day beats-hands down- any "good" or "great" day at work!
I love chatting to people about cruises; and when explaining them to the new and interested, I usually mention: "Don't marry your itinerary" because of the odds of it changing. I had a few ports swapped out (with a month's notice) due to Hurricanes Irma and Maria. I wasn't determined to visit the removed ports, so I was okay with that.
My mom had a trip and fall to a shoulder separation in Cancun, see went to hospital, and did not get back on the ship. Fortunately she had full coverage, so it was a good outcome. Would have been horrendous without
In 2019, my friend and I had prepaid nonrefundable tickets for the ferry from Seattle to Victoria on a Saturday afternoon. We both had tickets getting us to Seattle on Friday. A couple of hours before her flight was set to leave, it was cancelled. She couldn’t find another flight that day but was able to get on one early the next morning, with about an hour to spare to catch the ferry. Had she planned to arrive on Saturday, she may not have made the ferry.
Great advice. I have cruised 15 times ( I am not a huge fan) and agree completely with everything you say here. So worth being safe and not sorry in so many ways.
Number 11, check your credit card available funds, you don’t want to have an issue halfway around the world and find out you also have a credit card issue. Solution, have a separate backup card for travel, just in case.
We experienced a delayed return due to FOG. That's when I found out Southwest is basically joined at the hip with Carnival. All I did was mention the ship I was on and Southwest rebooked my flight for the next day with no extra fee. Of course we then had to get a hotel for that night.
I disagree with the 1 night pre cruise these days. A minimum of 2 nights because flights are so unreliable. We are doing Japan in October. 3 nights pre cruise!
Even though I am familiar with cruising,I agree with everything. I was one of those people who were taking off a cruise and we paid a little but were reimbursed for every penny. We also had to cancel 2 weeks before a cruise and received all our money back. Insurance is definitely worth it.
My Dad had insurance during a cruise when he had a major medical. Totally worth it. Best advice on a cruise...roll with the changes. Go with it. Enjoy the ship.
Great advice, as usual, Don. One of the things we love about cruising is arriving the day before embarkation and just enjoying the Port area. When we leave Sydney, Australia, we love going down to the Cruise Bar located right on the dock and just absorbing the excitement. There is usually a ship at the dock which adds to the excitement. We also when in Sydney go and change any foreign currencies that we may need. Our accommodation is only a 5-minute work to the dock.
I am a proponent of longer layovers. Most airports nowadays have new, fun restaurants. Book yourself a nice lunch! Take the time. Yeah, I'm always dying to get home to my cats and dogs, but there are times to not rush.
We took a risk in April with a nonstop early morning flight and it ended up canceled which caused SO much stress. We barely made it and only because the ship had delayed boarding. Boarded at 3:20 for a 4:30 sail away. Too close, never again.
Just 1 thing to add to #5. The drink package has to be purchased for each adult in the cabin. If your partner doesn't drink, the return on investment changes by 2. You now have to drink twice as much to break even.
For Princess it only has to be purchased for the first 2 adults in the cabin. And it has to be the same drink package. If you have 3 or 4 in a cabin the other passengers are optional. Not sure on other lines. This is as of 2/2023 at least.
Good tips, great video. I agree with you on the flights to and from the cruise. I always book my flight a day or two prior to the cruise and an afternoon flight after the cruise. I'm on vacation so no rush to get anywhere. I also love to have an ocean view or balcony cabin so that I can watch the sun come up and go down over the ocean. It is a beautiful site indeed. The insurance is so important. I just renewed my annual travel insurance. Yes I do roll with the punches. I also do not share my space or peace. I stopped having a roommate a couple of years ago. One or two times of dealing with anything that steals my peace of mind is one time too many. BON VOYAGE Don.
EXCELLENT! A number of your points we learned the hard way-almost! Going into the city of embarrassing a day or two early is a must! We usually relax the first day and tour the city the second day and get on the ship. Now that we are older (72) we find that day of rest is a must, especially when the flights are 8 or more hours plus the time changes.
INSURANCE!!! Yes! But for travel documents (etc) - take photos of ALL the documents, credit cards (BOTH SIDES) , etc and transfer them to a SECURE USB (the one where you need a password to unlock it). Inexpensive, small, and accessible anywhere with a USB port so you can recover details if the originals get lost (for whatever reason).
Yes. Don did a great job sharing most of crucial tip if you choose cruising. However, it is always our own responsibility to do research and check up if the cruise or trip we take suit our style and needs to enable a successful journey. Thank you so much Don. My husband and I are taking our first cruise in September on Carnival . It is a bucket list of several countries in 16 days. Your tips in this video is very helpful for me to be sure I have what I need for our adventure.
We are coming up to our 28th Ocean cruise, and we can totally relate to your tips that you've given out today. We agree with them all, and have most often, taken those tips, and cruising has been so good for us. We have probably another 7 or 8 cruises planned over the coming 3 years, and God willing, we will be able to see them all accomplished. Thanks for the tips, and I hope people will pay attention to them. Hoping that our next cruise to New England and Canada is not impacted by any remnants of hurricanes.
Don, this vlog was one of the best and most important ones you created for your community. It was a great travel check list to be saved and shared with others. Thanks for sharing your great knowledge.
Travel buffers on the front and back of a trip reduces the stress level tremendously. Why would you want to start your vacation or end your vacation in a ball of stress? Mo Time is Mo Better. If it is conserving vacation time or whatever. Trust me - they will wait for ya.
Good advice. I have started going as far as if I fly to my port, I add two to three days on the front end (to make sure I arrive, as well as my luggage) and also add a hotel night on the back end before flying home. A little more cost, but a great stress reliever.
Thank you so much for the informative information you give us.30 years a cruiser and, yes,the algorithms or whatever have took over. The customer service, no disrespect to the staff but its a numbers game now. Have done multiple European and United States ,mid East etc cruises, but excuse the pun, but the tide has turned. Carry on good guy, money is the king, wait till Ai kicks in. Love and Spiritual positivity to you All, ENGLAND, JB
Absolutely love getting up really early each morning on a cruise. I get my cup of coffee and go out on deck to watch the sun rise. I am most likely all by myself. Great way to start the day. Then I go for a light breakfast. I even eat watching to sun rise further in the sky.
When we went to Alaska in 2009, coming back through Canadian customs took for-ev-er. We were in line with a lot of people who missed their flights home because of it because they had late morning flights. We had a mid-afternoon flight and just made it, but at least we did...
Thank you Don. We follow your advise. It’s great spending a couple of days in your departing port city before the cruise starts. (Think Rome, Budapest, Vancouver!) it’s good to rest after flights and to add that city properly to your itinerary.
I am a believer in bringing our passports ashore. If you wind up in the hospital, you dont need to somehow get someone to run back to the ship for them. I didnt know you could get medical/evac insurance by itself.

68 cruises under my belt and I'll attest to this all being great advice. Thanks for posting!

Number 8: I agree. Leave time for relaxation. However, I think that the spas are the biggest ripoff on cruise ships.

haha it’s not 1999. Who still uses a viewfinder 😂

We cruise about 4 or 5 times a year. From years of traveling, this list is worth its weight in gold.
We were on a Mediterranean cruise and we had to change one of the ports. But the alternate port proved even more fascinating. By being flexible we had a wonderful time.
All good suggestions for oldies and newbies alike.
On my last cruise, my cruise insurance saved me over $125,000.00.I had a heart attack on the ship. I will never travel without it.
Hope your ok now

I was on two, WW-II era aircraft carriers. I have to laugh when anyone complains about one of today’s luxury liners. You are living like royalty!

My son was chief pilot for a medical flight company. Rescued people from foreign hospitals in medically outfitted Lear jets. Very expensive trip.
Sound advice Don...
Wonderful information. Hope you are doing well. Prayers are with you.😊
I hope your healing is coming along well!
I love your channel Don!.... Been watching for YEARS!... GOD bless!!
Really good information. Thanks Don.
Best advice ever Thanks Don
Hotel before is a must ! Here’s me driving to another country to get on a plane to make my cruise the next day. Very stressed 😢
When we went to Alaska in 2009, coming back through Canadian customs took for-ev-er. We were in line with a lot of people who missed their flights home because of it because they had late morning flights. We had a mid-afternoon flight and just made it, but at least we did...
100% correcton every point! Thank you so much for these reminders,
So glad your looking well and back to yourself...thanks for this great video
Thank you Don. We follow your advise. It’s great spending a couple of days in your departing port city before the cruise starts. (Think Rome, Budapest, Vancouver!) it’s good to rest after flights and to add that city properly to your itinerary.
Great tips Don!! I have cruised 10 - 15 times and still learned something from you.
I am a believer in bringing our passports ashore. If you wind up in the hospital, you dont need to somehow get someone to run back to the ship for them.
I didnt know you could get medical/evac insurance by itself.
Great advice Don!
Looking so forward to the group cruixe in just a few weeks!
