@@thebackpackfamily2836Maybe 1) she no longer uses that 2) she forgot 3) she was showing us stuff used for cleaning the house overall and if she were showing us how to wash dishes she would show that.
Also, most of us have a ton of scrubbers and sponges, so she is showing us how she only has the one scrubber/sponge vs showing us everything used to wash dishes at her house.
She probably also has baking soda or Barkeeper's Friend but isn't showing it.
I looked at this video as her showing us the categories of stuff that people have a ton of.
In terms of jewelry, Dawn also has a wedding ring. In terms of personal care, she has deodorant. She didn't show these because she's giving targeted examples.
It's a lot to come out aggressively saying she is lying. Thems fighting words in many places. Why do this in a space that's meant to be helpful?
The principles are the same and frankly helpful for most people. I have no intention of getting rid of all my stuff yet Dawn calls attention to a lot of behaviors and cognitive stuff (decision fatigue and paralysis, the burden of managing inventory, impulsivity) that is useful to many of us. Why tear her down?
If it doesn't help you there are others whose videos might.

It really is like an onion. Last winter, thanks to your videos, I shocked myself by scaling down enough in my kitchen to clear the counters, a task i thought impossible. I thought I was as declutteted as I could be in my kitchen. FF to this month, I had a 6' wall of cabinets I decided I wanted to get rid of. They were actually covering a nice big window. I did it! Cabinets are gone, and I was able to move my desk in their place!

Hi Dawn: The power of one is so valuable. One minute, one hour, one day. One item! My grandparents had a farm outside of Duluth and as a child visiting them was so life changing. My grandmother would always say "one is enough" and was creative when she needed more. Fast forward to the present. Two years ago I began following you after I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I kept my faith and recovered.I'm now in full remission. I attribute it to my faith, my environment as well as health habit changes. I hoped I would recover and began to follow you as I did a version of a swedish death cleaning just in case. What started as a cleanup actually became a lifestyle gift. What an impact a simplified lifestyle has made for health benefits and happiness! I live by the power of one now. Your message of awareness for your followers is golden. You are making a difference in the lives of many with your vision. Keep spreading the word.

For Christmas my husband bought me a three-way coat. I’ve never seen one before, I love it. The outer layer could be used for when it’s raining because it has a hood and it’s lightweight. The inner coat is fleece like for fall weather and put them both together for winter weather. You can store it on one hanger.

I think the three way coats work well in areas where the weather stays the same for long periods of time though.

Dawn's a prepper! I've been watchig for years and have decluttered half my house, still a ways to go. But I got rid of a beloved antique lawyer's bookcase and replaced it with a metal shelving unit to store food. I try to cook from scratch most of what we eat and having a dedicated "pantry" in the "guest bedroom" has been a huge blessing! I laughed when she said we don't love pans or spatulas so can narrow those down. I loved RAGS! I had a huge collection, old towels from my family, husband's family. I couldn't believe that I was attached to them. But I let a lot go, and now have a tidy rubbermaid in in the garage where I have a clean, contained collection of rags - that get a lot of use! It's funny what we cherish sometimes.

We live on a farm. I struggle with coats because I don’t want to wear the same coat that I wore outside or around the campfire. Also, I have 8 kids so we all have barn coats/ clothes/shoes and also good coats/clothes/shoes. I have tried to be minimal in these areas but it’s more of a hassle! Too many times I sit down at church and smell a lingering campfire smell and realize it’s my child’s coat! I also tried to have one comb/ brush but lose my sensibilities when I have to search the whole house for it, only to discover it’s in my daughters room because she was braiding her sisters hair. Someday I will have a minimal house when all my kids move out, and while it’s a dream now, I know I’ll miss it when the time is here.

So each person needs one heavy and one light coat for barn, and one of each for town. Mine live on hooks on the front door for barn coats, in my wardrobe for town coats. Kids coats all live on hooks on the backs of their doors, so at least I'm not looking at them all the time. We have 4 people, a dog and too many cats in 700 square feet, and it does not take very many shoes per person to equal too many shoes!

One of my biggest “wins” has been watching my daughter (now seventeen) who has been watching me all this time and often does a “reset” of her room because she loves it highly simplified too. I just know that she will not have a problem with too much inventory in life. I also continue to learn so much from your videos, I feel like learning is like the onion method in reverse, you keep adding a layer of wisdom to what is already there, learning one or two new tips or mindsets each time. Thankyou so much for what you do Dawn! You are reaching people globally, I’m in Australia. We always had food but toys ect were in short supply. I'm learning now to let go of things and declutter because my home got unbearably cluttered. It's getting a lot better. I think if 8 children only had a few things you'd have a lot in your home bless you. Then you have to keep outgrown clothes to hand down the next child ect.

I'm confused too, but it's due to some of the nasty negativity in the comments. I took the video as examples of how you can look at your stuff and decide what to dispose of, not as a prescriptive set of rules on what to keep and what not. I'm sure there are extra towels etc for dog puke and cleaning cars and a lot of the cleaning stuff in previous videos were being tested out for our benefit on how they work. So you cut a sponge in three to be thrifty and chuck two just to be a "proper" minimalist? How daft. No. You save them for when the first one needs replacing. Dawn has always said " You do you" so have as many of everything that you want/need to work for you. Let's just take the advice in good faith and acknowledge that Dawn's principles and calm encouragement has helped so many to get their homes and lives back within their control in an easy and non stressful way.

If Dawn saw all the stuff I have, she’d faint. I’m still at minimizing my clothes. I have already filled four large ( decorative) boxes with costume jewelry I no longer wear. I have four large jewelry boxes, about 30 necklaces not in jewelry boxes, 35 designer handbags ( I’ve given most of the ones I had away) the list goes on…My makeup alone fills up three drawers. This is why I subscribe to Dawn’s channel. I really am trying!!

If you have female relatives I would set everything you no longer want up in a room and let them know if they want anything, come get it. I think when we have have some nicer items it’s harder to part with. Many youngsters love the fashion stuff. Really it will make you happier knowing where it’s going. Then pack up the rest and give it to a woman’s shelter. Another group that would appreciate your thoughtfulness and everything will have a good home.
I’m on round three in my house. I ask my girls first, then pass it on. I’m still struggling with relatives who passed on things. Some, I decided I will just keep and those things my children can get rid of later on.

❤ The visual of the little scale, measuring the high or low of decision making! I love that, Dawn!
I also wanted to say about shoes...I am no minimalist, but in my 20s, I very quickly became one with shoes. Two things converged: I didn't have a lot of money and my Mom was having foot issues. I took her to appointments for a fallen arch and heard all the medical reasons why high quality shoes were important for foot health. I also had bought several pair of cheap shoes with no support that were cute, but didn't last long. I realized that instead of spending $10 or $12 five or six times, I could spend $60 once and have a better shoe that lasted longer. It got me to think about what would go with what outfit, so I really ended up with a summer set and a winter set. Each set had one pair in the "gray or silver" family or the "brown or gold" family. Now that I'm older, I have allowed just a couple pair of bright colors, but I know to only buy the good stuff!

It is interesting to watch, as I am cleaning out the house due to reorganizing 1 room. When I watch someone decide on coats, clothes, shoes, it is interesting as clothes have never been an issue of clearing out. 1 coat, 1 light jacket, sneakers, flip flops, boots, and 1 pair dress shoes. Our problem has always been the pass down, from the family. The worst thing is when they ask about something and expect me to have whatever it is their memory is attached to it. I finally gave myself permission to see what or how I can or can not use it. We have a craft section in our house for creating. Yes for us it is useful with 3 generations living together and special needs. So in ending there are things I will have extra of, and other things I will not. With 3 generations in a house we will never be minimalist, but teaching how to discard different areas, what is important vs what isn't is allowing those with hoarding tendencies to work on those issues. I actually thought I would be done doing this by now but still working to clear out. Slowly it is working. This tends to be more of a thing of helping remind me that it is ok for it to take time.

The self-awareness that comes with decluttering has been - what I can only describe as - a joyful confrontation. I decluttered books a few years ago, only to deeply regret it later (and still do). I came to realise that I'd lost touch with the person I was and hadn't spent the time questioning who I was, why I was decluttering and how I wanted to spend my future time. I recently did this work with my ridiculously huge collection of eyeshadows - I use only a few and have decluttered these a number of times over the years, so why do I keep finding myself with more? I learned that I am a collector colour. My eyeshadows rank alongside my saved paint decks, coloured art pencils and my Pinterest board named 'Colour'. I turn to these for inspiration - their names also serve as excellent creative writing prompts - and 'brain breaks'. Thus, my colours should be honoured. Some oak cabinets and shelving are going up in my bedroom to house my colour collections, and my wardrobe, of which only 20 percent is worn like most people, is going to have the decluttering axe taken to it instead. My eyeshadows are not used in the conventional way, but they nonetheless have an important purpose for me. My unworn clothes do not. So I can live with only one of nearly all of the clothes I own, but I need eyeshadows of every colour imaginable.

Personally I like having choices on my clothing and shoes. I’m on round three now that I’m older and some I just no longer find comfortable for me. I think we need to look at if we even wear them anymore or are they are a special occasion shoe. I get downsizing, but if I wear it, it stays. If it has a purpose, it stays. If it’s something I love or want to see or use at sometime of the year, it stays.
Make your own guidelines to help you on all the things in your home.
Professional people need more choices. What this really does is gives you the chance to see what you really wear and get rid of what you don’t. Then find those things you need to fill in the gaps and enjoy.

    • @haniyyahn
      @haniyyahn 4 місяці тому

At the end of the day, you need to do what's comfortable for and works for you.
Having multiple outfits is part of office life, so that would be an area where you need more stuff. Maybe you don't need as many household cleaners or conditioners though - we're all different.
Re office wear, I think it also depends. I'm from a northeastern city where most women who work in offices downtown wear sneakers or boots in bad weather on the commute to work and then switch to dress shoes at the job.
Often they only have one or two pairs of simple dress shoes for work that many of them store permanently at the office.
No one is clocking our feet and if they are what's objectionable about classic black pumps or ballerinas?
I've noticed the same kind of practices in the Pacific Northwest.
I think with office wear the practices ould be the same - consider what you have and whether you like and use it or just are storing it, figure out what actually suits you and just buy that and then consider creating whar's essentially a capsule wardrobe for work where the pieces work well together.
I try to remember that Dawn is showing us what she does and the reasoning behind it but that each of us needs to decide what's best.

    • @jenniferlane7128
      @jenniferlane7128 18 днів тому

Understand when we work outside the home, we feel like we need lots of outfits so we won't be "outfit repeaters", but truthfully most people don't notice, and even more don't care. Really who is looking closely at our shoes? as long as well maintained you don't need THAT many, maybe a black pair and a light colored pair as she pointed out, and then at the end of the season, did you wear them? If not they move on to another home.

It doesnt matter if Dawn owns more than one pair of closed toe shoes, or moŕe than one plate and cuttlery for guests, so they are not included in video, you all! It doesn't matter that this lovely family obviously wash the towels daily. What matters is the core idea of how life could be easier for you.

Thank you Dawn. When I became a widow it was hard to relocate my precious husband’s things. Plus my stuff! All summer long I’ve hauled so much out of my house I’m sure the neighbors think I’ve got nothing in my house. But I’m sooooo happy that I’m doing it! PS. I have ONE jacket on my coat hook.

this amazes me - the jewelry part - I have recently got rid of all my costume jewelry except for a few pieces. But I have lots of gold rings, necklaces, bracelets that my husband, mom, mother in law, etc. have given to me that I love. I guess it is all what you love. I don't own hairspray, or root cover up, not a lot of makeup products. shoes not so much, but love my different boots lol. Love your videos they are inspirational for sure

It made me think about my costume jewellery too. I have a lot and since changing jobs to one where I wear casual clothes every day I mostly just wear one gold necklace and my wedding and engagement rings. I don't think I'll get rid of all my gold things just yet but going to give my costume jewellery a good going over.

I think especially if you don't use a dryer, but let them dry in the air, takes at least 12 hours for mine, depending on weather.

@@christinae30 I agree. I'm in the UK and whilst many households have dryers it is more common for people to dry their washing outside, I certainly do.

The towels are the one item that grosses me out only having one.

@@gaynorprice-jones1826 I'm in the UK, too. So enjoying this weather at the moment and getting my washing dry! To help my washing get dry in the winter I double spin, then use a dehumidifier next to the clothes horse. Much cheaper to run than a tumble dryer, and not too expensive to buy.
