Actually really like this movie. Gothika did a great job at illustrating how when you're an abuse (especially sexual) victim no one listens to you. How being treated like you're insane for long enough can make you feel like you are crazy. How broken the system can really be by putting you closer to mental health workers who are themselves narcissistic and abusive to their patients.
This right here! I'm at the part in the video review where he's talking about Miranda and Penelope's interaction after Penelope's assault. I felt like in that interaction, part of the reason she didn't give the name is bc how many times had she hinted, or outright told or got close to telling Miranda (Halle) what was happening to her only to be met with disbelief bc of other mental instabilities. Which is why the villains of the movie even got away with what they did for so long, by preying on highly vulnerable population that no one would take a double glance at. Oh the movie def had it's faults, but it absolutely did try!
Uh... no. She behaves like an insane person. That is why she was dismissed. Not to mention she actually killed the dude and all the evidence said so. So... no. What you said about this movie is silly
Gothika scared the living SHIT outta me when I was a kid! The fact that this movie brought us Limb Bizkit's cover of Behind Blue Eyes feels so bizarre. Also, hearing the intro after so long gives me SO MUCH JOY!!!
This was, strangely, RDJ’s return to film after multiple (highly publicized) prison/jail stints, and decades of hardcore substance abuse. He was so famously a junkie that films would charge INSANE amounts to insure him during filming. On this movie, co-president of Dark Castle, Susan Levin took a shine to the former star/mess-in-recovery and got his ass back on track. They eventually married (against her father’s wishes), and RDJ says to this day that had he not begged to be part of this film he would’ve never stayed sober. This exceedingly mid movie ultimately lead to Jon Favreau putting his career/reputation on the line when he insisted upon casting RDJ in a little diddy he was directing called Iron Man. Life is wild, man. Love the video.
I'll even give RDJ credit during Natural Born Killers, he was amazing in that film but the fact that THIS was his "come to Jesus moment" film, pretty intriguing
Fun fact; the farm house was one of my father's friend house. There is no hatch in this house. They build it and it opened to nothing, they filmed the rest at another location.
Storytime for me. My mom became heavily addicted to methadone after her cancer treatments when I was a child. We would rent movies to spend time together that wasnt going out. She wanted to watch Gothica and would never remember it, bc nodding out and sleeps, or bouts of nausea/pain. Every couple days she would say she wanted to watch it. But after the first time of watching it. Id always fall asleep after the first 25mins as long as she was sleeping too. This became a running joke after beating her cancer that she was also a part of. She would want to make it through this movie so bad. After years we still ask if she wants to go to blockbuster to watch Gothica. Dark humor, we all know. But still an homage to the only exciting for a second movie and the drone of just trying to make it through it. My mom beat cancer which is better than this movie can say.

You described the quality of these movies perfectly: squandered potential. In my opinion, they came out right at the point where our generation remembers them fondly but they had major flaws. If the kinks had been worked out, 13 ghosts would've gone down as one of my favorite movies.
I still think that 13 ghosts has strong reboot/prequel value. They could delve deep into the stories of the individual ghosts, I'd certainly watch that if it's done right!
@@JDoe-gf5oz That’s because you’re looking at the surface-level versions of them the movie introduced. Delving further into them allows room to make them more interesting and original, and not akin to someone falling on a pitchfork. Even in that scenario, why was the pitchfork there? Why did they fall on it? Who were they? What was going on in their life leading up to the deadly fall? There’s a U.S. murder case where a woman named Amy Mullis supposedly fell and impaled herself on a pitchfork (technically corn rake) on the family pig farm, but the story turned out to be full of lies, betrayal, affairs, violence, blah blah blah. Things that seem simple and boring on the surface can turn out to be much more, especially with the freedom to be creative and imaginative to explore it all in fiction. The movie could be redone or turned into a limited-run series and deliver so much more on the promise and potential it had. The mundane can become the sublime with the right kind of minds, skills, and tools for transforming it.

this is one of my favorite movies. penelope cruz reminds me of brittany murphey in her character. the twist of her husband being a murderer is great enough. the twist of the sheriff being the mastermind is amazing. the girl using the wife of one of the killers to enact revenge? priceless.
Wow!!! Haven't heard of this movie in the longest time. Crazy to think it's been 20 years since it came out. And shout out to Limp Bizkit for the cover of "Behind Blue Eyes" used at the end of the movie

I've been going thru the comments looking for someone to say this. I saw that part in the trailer as a kid and I still think about it at 30 years old! 😢😆 I'd look away real fast every time the trailer played. Had nightmares for years
I freaking loved Gothicka when I was a little girl! Honestly, I question the authenticity of Critics because they are so nitpicky about every little thing. I loved the acting, the story was pretty good, and I genuinely hated the bad guys. It made me cry, rage, and want to crawl in my own grave in the best ways! And the absolute relief at the end was just bliss.
I actually really like Gothika. It has it's issues, absolutely, like all Dark Castle movies...but, as far as they go, it's definitely one of the better ones. I feel like they actually tried when it comes to the story whereas you can't really say that about the others. It's stylish, polished, great looking fun. Mostly style and, to me, JUST enough substance.
Lmao I hate it when I look away for a second from someone in a psych ward and they cut themselves 35 times with a scalpel. Happens so often! One second!

GG showing the Dark Castle lineup really made me want to see him talk about Splice. Remember that movie being absolutely insane and think it would make for good content.

This film scared the living sh*t out of me. So much so, I haven't watched it again since I was a kid. This is making me want to revisit it since I'm so desensitized to horror now 😂 I'm assuming others can relate.
Also Thank you so much for looking into all of these horror movies from the early 2000s, they are super nostalgic and loving these so much 😍 Speaking of, have you seen What lies Beneath? Or Hide and Seek? Those were pretty cool. Also Disturbia? Another great movie 😁
The Kung Pow zoom joke got a good laugh out of me. Also I saw this movie when I was like 13 so I thought it was scary but I could also kind of tell it wasn't very good. I was definitely much more into the concept of 13 ghosts at that age
I'm not sure if I missed a video but this is probably the first after months of not seeing the intro and I missed it! I love it when he goes movie review.
Oh PLEEEAAASE watch House on haunted hill! I loved it as a kid and either it works alright or I’m blinded by nostalgia but I watched it again last year and found I still loved it! 🙌🙌🙌
cover is iconic. it what got me into "horror" movies. used to see it in target as a kid and be like, damn, looks scary, i wanna see it but wont be allowed for a long time. then watched it when i saw it on tv... man i was disappointed
Omgosh this movie! I remember this in the weirdest way. My parent were super strict with what I could watch and when I could watch. My 2 best friends from school would literally describe films to me on our lunch break including Gotika. I remember saying to them "Well no that doesn't make sense though". Finally watched it myself and yup makes 0 sense 😂
I remember being shit scared of this movie when I was younger I watched it recently wtf was I scared about also love you GG keep it up you should do nekromantic 2
Watch “In Dreams” with Robert Downy Jr. It’s so freaking good. Same vibes. Both of them I grew up watching bc they came out before the Ring did in 2002. But it gives me 13 ghost vibes as well
21:20 I had to rewind like 4 times to laugh my ass off at the “I’m sorry, Miranda.” *points to body on floor with puzzled expression, insinuating curiosity .... hilarious as always.
Maybe it's because i saw this movie when i was a teenager and it holds a lot of nostalgia but i actually enjoy this movie, still to this day. John Carroll Lynch always does an amazing job of playing a creep. And i think it had a decent twist. "It's good to be God"
Ya know that “bar”, that feeling these movies fall short off? I think there is something about the film language, writing, and the image quality of the 90s and 00s that is very much a transition period to where we are today, so it hints both at the classics of previous decades, and the contemporary “high horror” and “marvel” movies
I reviewed this movie like two years ago and came out with a somewhat similar opinion, but i focused a lot more on the theming. I appreciate your opinion on it, but I can't help but really enjoy the psychiatrist ignoring all of the signs of abuse only to be proven wrong and hopefully learn to listen to her patients. Or do Ghost Whisperer shit. One of the two. Great work as always.

ahhh! gothika! gothika! gothika! i'm so hyped for this. i loved gothika. even rewatching it, i still love it. it's such a product of it's time and for the boring script, the acting was surprisingly good from both leads, especially considering this was right before rdj went into rehab. so honestly, banger for them both. i liked that this movie plays with its colour palette so much. like a lot of what made it kinda spooky was how everything looked dark and shadow-y and it just always felt-off. that's what dark castle entertainment was really good at. (if you want to watch a good rdj movie around the same time, i put in a bid for you to watch zodiac. it has jake gyllenhaal and mark ruffalo in it too and it's neo-noir.)
This should've been 2 separate movies. The stereotypical horror movie with all the ghostly shenanigans. Then a more serious thriller that tries to explain the lore behind the events that happened.
Like a lot of the movies you've re-visited lately (with the exception of The Cube, that movie is great), Gothika came out when I was a teenager, and hanging out on websites devoted to horror movies, and it seemed like it was very obviously going to be bad. A lot of these movies really wanted to lean in to psychological horror as opposed to gore/slasher fests, but they were just...not equipped to write a story that would make you lose sleep. Time tends to mush together, so I feel like this is also when we were getting movies like Hostel and things directed by Rob Zombie, but my timeline might be off. So at least trying to not throw a pile of guts at the audience is appreciated. (I was also getting into Japanese horror films at the same time. I mean, if you're not doing something as high tension as Kourei, which itself is a remake of the movie 'Seance on a Wet Afternoon', it's just more jumpscares).
Doc said she cut herself 35 times. I’m counting around 25 to spell out “NOT ALONE” on her arm. Odd they would have him state a specific number like that if it wasn’t going to be accurate.
my babysitter made me (8) and my lil sis (6) watch this with her and i shat absolute bricks. watched it again as an adult and almost cried laughing. the scene with the wet footsteps appearing and the breath on the glass gave me nightmares for years. im so happy you're talking about it, i love watching you rip into things i love
I actually love this movie. I wrote a paper about it for my psychology class years ago. I think it's a really interesting movie when looked at from that point of view.

I get that it is probably faster and easier to get the live watch reviews out, and i appreciate the content. You are one of the very very very few UA-camrs that I find entertaining. Thanks!
the look after you talking about house on the haunted hill gives me the feeling we’re gonna be getting another great review video cant wait
this is one of my favorite movies. penelope cruz reminds me of brittany murphey in her character. the twist of her husband being a murderer is great enough. the twist of the sheriff being the mastermind is amazing. the girl using the wife of one of the killers to enact revenge? priceless.
Wow!!! Haven't heard of this movie in the longest time. Crazy to think it's been 20 years since it came out. And shout out to Limp Bizkit for the cover of "Behind Blue Eyes" used at the end of the movie
I liked that cover.
Most of Limp Bizkit's work isn't for me but that cover is quite good.
I unironically LOVE Limp Bizkit and that cover fucks
10:47 I remember this movie mainly because of that particular moment lol the creepy "stop motion-esque" ghost walking, creeped me the hell out to this day :O that is a LOT more creepier than Ghosts depicted today in my opinion, because it's so ....unnatural and otherworldly.
I've been going thru the comments looking for someone to say this. I saw that part in the trailer as a kid and I still think about it at 30 years old! 😢😆 I'd look away real fast every time the trailer played. Had nightmares for years
Was not expecting this review, but it is GREATLY welcomed
I gotta say GG the gag with the volleyball completely took me out, 10/10
I freaking loved Gothicka when I was a little girl!
That was always the cover in the movie rental store that I thought was just a little too scary to rent as a kid, but it also intrigued me
I actually really like Gothika.
The one thing that bothered me is the ghost was hurting her but like she needed her help??? 😂
Lmao I hate it when I look away for a second from someone in a psych ward and they cut themselves 35 times with a scalpel. Happens so often! One second!
Hands down was rewatching your videos as you uploaded, nothing better than a fresh GG upload!
If that water you threw on the mirror was going into your cabinet, you should keep as eye out for mold due to condensation was taking showers or baths over time.
Im sad this important comment hasn't gotten more likes... This is just good advice for everyone
5:10 "I too am a method actor" underated joke
*Throws ball into net*
"Are we ever gonna play the fuckin game?"
I never watched this movie BUT the cover is so strikingly FROM MY CHILDHOOD and I'm happy to see ya talk about it GG
The volleyball skit made me laugh so hard. Its the little things...😂
Found your channel about a month ago and have been blitzing your videos since then. Probably the most entertaining content on you tube. Here’s to more to come.
You should have WELL over 1m followers!! I've been watching for years, and your work has been consistently quality, hilarious, and evolving.
I’ve loved this movie since I was a kid. It had a good plot and the jumpscares were good. I also loved that I didn’t even guess who the killer was til she figured it out.
GG showing the Dark Castle lineup really made me want to see him talk about Splice. Remember that movie being absolutely insane and think it would make for good content.
“It’s pouring underneath the cabinet?! FUCK” lmaoo
I'd love to see you cover the movie "Enough" saw it way too young and it really fucked with me. Psychological thriller about domestic abuse and manipulation
Hallie berry is the only reason I watched that bond movie😂😂 I snuck and watched this movie and kept falling asleep, kept the dvd hidden in my room for weeks and just couldn't push through!. Sorry about your bathroom sink bro!😂
It cracks me up watchin your videos me and my brother used love watchin u way back when and ur intro “I’m not a critic “ so on an so forth is hilarious
I like Gothika! I'm actually really excited seeing somebody talk about it because I never heard somebody else mention it.
7:30 as a former employee for a state hospital (mental institution), I can 100% guarantee she would be sent there. I've seen multiple former and current employees walk through the very same doors they use to monitor. Conflict of interest does not even enter the minds of judges/cops when it comes to mentally ill people.
This was one of my favorite movies as a child. It traumatized me very well. Lol
The bits of this movie that I remember was all the ghost stuff and then the ending twist. I had completely forgotten RDJ was in this at all.
This film scared the living sh*t out of me. So much so, I haven't watched it again since I was a kid. This is making me want to revisit it since I'm so desensitized to horror now 😂 I'm assuming others can relate.
Labyrinth. The opening scene with the goblins filling up the frame.
Nice to see that you've been covering movies that gave me nightmares as a child. Keep it up GG
so glad the intro is back! the consistent uploads are such high quality and so much fun to watch ❤ I look forward to your new videos every day:)
Also Thank you so much for looking into all of these horror movies from the early 2000s, they are super nostalgic and loving these so much 😍
Speaking of, have you seen What lies Beneath? Or Hide and Seek? Those were pretty cool. Also Disturbia? Another great movie 😁
Omg I loved those movies!
"...ranked number 2 in the box office behind The Cat in the Hat, the better movie..."
FUCK YEAH!
Please, please give What Lies Beneath a try. Or The Orphanage. They’re both underrated, The Orphanage especially.
I watched What Lies Beneath recently. It's so good!
The squinty eye look I gave my screen at 9:18 was fuckin real. Damn you GG. That was TOOOOO damn good. 😂
Yes, I'll take "movies that contributed to my fear of men even though I was never abused in any way so I don't really identify" for $500
same here lol
I remember walking around Hollywood Video and always seeing the DVD cover for this movie!
I actually really loved Gothika, it was surprisingly good for its time; I'm pretty sure I've seen it at least 6 times lol
Oh PLEEEAAASE watch House on haunted hill! I loved it as a kid and either it works alright or I’m blinded by nostalgia but I watched it again last year and found I still loved it! 🙌🙌🙌
Review The Cell with Jlo as the main lead kinda reminds me of this too
cover is iconic. it what got me into "horror" movies. used to see it in target as a kid and be like, damn, looks scary, i wanna see it but wont be allowed for a long time. then watched it when i saw it on tv... man i was disappointed
"I also have bats, but that's a different story" 😂
I remember being shit scared of this movie when I was younger I watched it recently wtf was I scared about also love you GG keep it up you should do nekromantic 2
dawg 3 videos in 1 WEEK is INSANE
I love the grind GG 👊🏾
Watch “In Dreams” with Robert Downy Jr. It’s so freaking good. Same vibes. Both of them I grew up watching bc they came out before the Ring did in 2002. But it gives me 13 ghost vibes as well
"but.....laws" 🤣🤣🤣 that shit killed me! another 10/10 video
I liked Gothika. Creeped me out as youth. But I also went through a very similar situation as a kid. So there's that!
What?
Care to share more information? So curious
21:20 I had to rewind like 4 times to laugh my ass off at the “I’m sorry, Miranda.” *points to body on floor with puzzled expression, insinuating curiosity .... hilarious as always.
2003 was a really good year for movies if you like bad movies.
Pirates of the Caribbean was good…
The censor sound you used is nearly identical to the sound my earbuds make when they die. I was so confused
Mista GG, won't say this too much because it probably won't get noticed anyway but you should pick apart the movie Frailty.
“That’s my daughter! “
Amazing video on Football! This channel blindsided me and theur first video made me subscribe and like right away. Can't wait for other videos for the rest of the summer! 🎉🎉
ahhh! gothika! gothika! gothika! i'm so hyped for this. i loved gothika. even rewatching it, i still love it. it's such a product of it's time and for the boring script, the acting was surprisingly good from both leads, especially considering this was right before rdj went into rehab. so honestly, banger for them both. i liked that this movie plays with its colour palette so much. like a lot of what made it kinda spooky was how everything looked dark and shadow-y and it just always felt-off. that's what dark castle entertainment was really good at.
Also the only reason I was interested in this movie in the first place was because “Goth” was in the name 😭
First few vids and you my guy hit it all spot on so far. Best description and depictions. Hurricane C part, I'm dead 🤣
I actually really enjoyed Gothika I definitely didn't see that ending coming. It's definitely a guilty pleasure
my babysitter made me (8) and my lil sis (6) watch this with her and i shat absolute bricks. watched it again as an adult and almost cried laughing. the scene with the wet footsteps appearing and the breath on the glass gave me nightmares for years.
im so happy you're talking about it, i love watching you rip into things i love
I actually love this movie. I wrote a paper about it for my psychology class years ago. I think it's a really interesting movie when looked at from that point of view.
