What's also cool is he doesn't directly start mimicking him. At first he does not see Mike, and looks like he just noticed him, as if it wasn't 1408 copying him on the other building.
There was a scene in Polanski's 'Tenant' film or whatever it's called from 1976 and it was quite similar, i think the director of 1408 could be inspired by that
More of a reflection than shadow but I get you. I think the thought of there being an eldritch"thing" in the wall freaks me out and I don't scare easily. I usually watch horror for aesthetic and story but 1408 genuinely freaked me TF out
I love how, at first, you may be thinking "Oh, the room is trying to teach him a lesson to be a better person". But no. The room is just a pure, unbridled sadist that wants you to suffer.
Yeah, if it was trying to teach him a lesson then letting him go after the hour would have been more than enough. When the hour repeats, you realize it really is an evil fucking room.
I always found it interesting how the room never kills you. It just tortures you mentally to the point of wanting to kill yourself. Which parallels what it's like living with a mental illness. Even with the imagery of drowning or the feeling of maybe feeling better only to realize that the illness is still there. You're still in the room. And Mike has PTSD from his daughters death which the room can represent because he can no longer run away from the thoughts.
@jdk9673 haha I have PTSD too which is what made me think of it. The movie represented the sense of dread and exhaustation so well. "It's only just begun" playing over and over again is exactly what it feels like when there is no end in sight to recovery. And even with the sense of denial that Mike experiences in the beginning... only to slowly realize what is happening. I think a lot of people can relate to that.

1408 is perfect horror with no answers. You will never find out why is the room evil, what is haunting it. But it doesn’t matter, and that makes it so good.

When he “makes it out” only to find he didn’t is pure evil. Johns acting aswell as unravelling what happened to previous people in the room is what makes it great.
@@birdhead9943 @pip1387 would love to get some suggestions then. Subjectivity is subjective of course, but what if I somehow haven't seen what either of you prefer over 1408
I always get nervous when he's able to open the door for the handyman to help fix the thermostat and he doesn't just leave. Because once that door shuts it'll NEVER open again.
Skipping the 13th floor is an actual thing in most western buildings that are tall enough to have 13 floors because of the superstition surrounding the number. They also don't have 13th rooms either the numbers skip from 112-114, 212-214, etc. In Asia a lot of buildings skip the 4th floor and 4th rooms but not the 13th because 4 is the unlucky number there.
I stayed in one hotel as a kid in Japan where they had a 4th floor - and it was really creepy. There was a man who would wander around the corridors, and peeked into our room when we were settling in. My parents noticed him too.
There’s a line his father says that has always really stuck with me. “As I was, you are. As I am, you will be.” Really disturbing on a psychological level, especially seeing the father in that state. Great review and analysis, Mista GG!
Look on me you passers by, As you are now so once was I, As I am now so you will be Now think of death and follow me Saw it on a headstone as a kid and it's always stuck with me
Easily one of the most chilling and best endings is when Lily realises Mike wasn't lying about his stay at 1408 and that he saw his daughter. One of my favourite Stephen King stories adapted into a movie
I love how there's a filter over the movie clips whenever you're talking about the story from the book, small touches like that makes a lot of difference and it's really appreciated. If I can suggest a movie it would be House[House] (1977) this thing is a masterpiece
Fun fact about the story 1408: Steven King included the first draft and second draft of the opening scene in 1408 as part of his memoir/how to write book, "On Writing" as an example of what kind of edits and adjustments he makes between drafts.
The movie does such a good job establishing just how f***ing dangerous it is to enter that room, to the point where you don't even want to be on the same floor as it. The fact that they have to send maids in there to clean it just makes my skin crawl. They're basically sending them into the Leviathan's gaping mouth, hoping that it won't chomp down on them
Well they had a lot of precautions. Olin stayed inside the room with them as they were cleaning at all times and they were doing some shift things or whatever to make sure the room doesn't lock in on a person
@@highdefinition450 definetly understandable. But honestly, that might even be worse. The only thing more dangerous than that room's existence, is nobody remembering it's existence at all. Them keeping the room clean and in check ensures that it will be remembered and taken seriously for years to come. Otherwise they might try to re-open it if enough of the old staff who would protest are gone
(I don't know how hotel maintainance(?) works so forgive me if this is common practice irl) the fact that they even have to send maids up to a room that usually never gets occupants implies that shit happens in there regardless of if someone is staying in there or not which is insane
1408 is one of my favorite horror movies, I periodically come back to it to watch again. "It's an evil fucking room." And John Cusack was flawless in his role. I love the character archetype he plays and he does it so, so well. That part where he's screaming "I was out!" Felt so real and raw and frustrating. I like how the movie ends and you can somewhat come to your own conclusion about what ending feels best to you. Its underrated in the psych horror space.
That shit is so brutal lol that's real evil, the room cons him into thinking he made it out, gave him a happy looking future, and then ripped it all away in a few seconds. Can't torture someone with nothing left to lose, so you have to give them something to lose, it's so good💁🏻♀️
@@itsjustmaddisenJohn Cusack is a great actor that agrees to play in a lot of shit movies. But when the movie is actually written well, you just have to love Cusacks role in it
@@VioPLayable oh absolutely agree. I also loved him in Anastasia that was one of my favourite movies even as a kid lol I didn’t think he’d be cut out for voice acting but he was someone I still remember to this day.
The room sounds horrifying. Constantly trapped in a nightmare. The part where it makes it seem that mike escapes and then brings him back into the room was pure horror. This is one of the few horror movies that actually left me startled.
As someone who used to watch this movie everyday for weeks on end, I still don't know why. The Theatrical offers such a powerful ending. With Lilly hearing hear dead daughter's voice, and finally understanding what Mike went through in that room. There is no other choice for then the Theatrical imo. It is the perfect ending.
To me it fell flat for a specific reason. Now I haven't seen the film in years so it may show this better than I remember, but my impression was it kills the victims full stop. The short story explains there are survivors with severe trauma and that could've carried the theatrical ending better. But if you watch the movie believing it's a death curse, him surviving a fire that intense feels contrived. In an American movie structure "hero has to live" way. That molotov followed by breaking the window caused a fireball explosion seen from the street. There's no way a civilian (no fire protection suit) would survive that. The hero simply won because he beat the room.
@@cats1970What I don’t like about the movie (other than his near-smirk after his ex-wife hears the voice of their late daughter. Like buddy this was a traumatic moment for you, and it’s traumatic for her too! Wipe the smirk off your face!) is that the endings imply you CAN beat the room. Like cmon. For one, all it took was fire? Nobody thought of that before? For two the books imply there’s nothing to beat. It’s just some otherworldly entity somehow attached to that specific room, and he only lucked into an escape (Mike wonders if the room prefers raw meals). There’s no beating it, only avoidance. Hence why Olin does everything he can within the law to keep it from being booked.
@@Aliyah_666 the theatrical ending is the only one that’s an actually impactful ending to me. The directors cut feels too cheesy with the jumpscare and the stuff of him joining his daughter in the afterlife. The third ending is just straight up a worse version of the theatrical ending, and the fourth ending feels like a generic cliffhanger ending. The theatrical cut is easily the best one.
I prefer the theatrical version the most because Lilly hearing her daughter's voice again after her death is a lot more impactful to me compared to the other versions' endings. Edit: Okay, context, the comment isn't about the Mike's character arc or even me saying I prefer it to be revealed that at least something that happened in the room was real. It's simply me saying that between the theatrical version and the director's cut, I prefer the scene in theatrical because of Lily being the one to hear her daughter's voice on the recorder as it feels like it brings more of an impact than Olen hearing Katie's voice as he has no connections to her and no idea who she is either.
Same. Like yes the "downer ending" he dies, but he dies saving everyone from the room and is with Lily again. The theatrical ending both he and his wife hears her again. In a way that way worse than him dying and the wife (cant remember her name) never really knowing what happened, because the wife has to not just come to terms that ghost are real, but finding out with her dead child, and Mike has physical proof that the last time he saw his daughter he crushed her body monents later. Knowing that is real, and having to live with that seems so haunting.
I think the version that his wife doesn’t hear it still is good because the whole point of the movie was for him to believe what he writes and now he has that experience, it more of a self reflection point of view. He has confirmation that it’s real so now his stories will have real weight and conviction in them imo
The one she doesn't hear is better because without that validation we are still up for the interpretation that maybe it was all in his head or maybe he's still in the room
This reminds me of the true story I once heard where a guy had a wife and 7 year old daughter and he lived a happy life. But then one day they managed to wake him from his coma and his family wasn't real. He had to go through grief trauma therapy as for him, he'd spent 8 years with his family/daughter and they were very real to him. When he woke from his coma, he never had a wife and daughter. He was just at university as a young man who had hit his head hard after a prank went wrong. That's scary!
My favorite part of the short story is: "He could still hear horns on Fifth, but they were now very distant. Did he still hear the saxophone? If so, the room had stolen its sweetness and melody and left only an atonal reedy drone, like the wind blowing across a hole in a dead man’s neck or a pop bottle filled with severed fingers..." Great video, GG 🤘🏻
Some movies tackles trauma and PTSD with symbolism that falls flat so hard it hurts, but some movies like 1408 and Jacob's Ladder do it so well that they stick in your mind forever.
Dude this was my favorite horror movie when I was a kid. I used to buy these old DVDs from a gaming/dvd re sell store by my house with allowance. This movie was there for like $10 and it looked cool because it had Nicholas Catge in it (it was John Cusack but 12 year old me didn't know that lol). I bought it and have loved it since. It's such a good movie. It was never scary to me tho, just really well made and fascinating.
Also watched it a lot as a kid and also thought it was nick cage lmao ! I think this movie is why I have such high standards for any other horror movie I watch
Does that apply to the very few super famous/well known authors? I can't imagine that few people going to a book signing if it was like Stephen king. SK actually has a writer Characters in his books as a self insert. 1408 is probably the best example of it I have seen
uhhh… it depends on the size of the author. considering how the movie was making him out to be, it was clearly meant to be disappointingly small. if you’re constantly only getting three people in total to your book signing then… im… not sure why you’d even… have… a book signing. better off stopping people in the street if they want to hear about your book.
Actually rewatched this film two days ago, it appears fate smiles on me. It was only after seeing it on Amazon that I realised there was a different ending.
1408 is up there as pieces of media that inspire me, it falls into familiar territory such as the first few Silent Hill games (especially 2) where it's psychologically torturing characters with their own thoughts and actions. Confronting repressed memories, regrets, trauma, and the struggle being amplified to a physical struggle is scary as all hell; what you don't know is scary, but to experience again what you know and want to avoid is terrifying.
For some reason I thought the ending was once he started playing it it meant that it was an illusion and that his wife actually ended up getting to 1408 and finding him in there and then getting both stuck in the illusion.
1000% agree!! It’s very rare for a person, especially an “internet famous” person to be: - insightful - funny - kind - hard working - humble - “cool” (whatever that is lmao) But ya know what, I am confident MistaGG checks them all. It is a character flaw of mine to feel a twinge of jealousy of many UA-camrs… but Mista GG? Not even the faintest little bit. As he approaches a million subscribers I legit could not be happier for this dude. I’ll keep watching and keep wishing him all the success in the world! Ok fanboy rant over… sorry. This video was just particularly good and I felt compelled to put my appreciation in writing!
1408 is a huge favorite of mine. I will say, the ending with the publisher reading the1408 manuscript came off to me that the room kept his manuscript & sent it out to get people more interested in 1408. Thats why the room got him so far into the delusion that he addressed it & packed it. Which infers that someone who was a fan of/ knew the main character was involved with the room & that's who was manipulated into sending the postcard that got him here. Maybe a maid was listening to an audio book of his and the room saw an opportunity for more souls.
When I thought the gift giving was over....our guy came thru & gifted us one more time with a 30 min video! We musta been good this year. Merry Christmas to everyone & to Mista GG ❤
24:50 this was my favorite. I loved that he got to prove it to the audience. I just wish more people could’ve seen it in the movie instead of Just the wife..
Dang GG you REALLY are upping your game here with just how this is shot, reading the short story as supplemental material, etc. It really shows this is something YOU care to make videos about. Absolutely ate up all the creativity on your end and great story telling. Its been awhile since I read 1408. Bravo.
1408 is one of my most rewatched movies. Really good work on the video and extra kudos for comparisons to the book & the visual editing over the scenes when you’re reading the extra dialogue. The theatrical ending is the best one, although the directors cut was the first one I ever saw when I bought the DVD! Great video 👏🏾
This is actually one of my favorite films I’ve literally watched it at least 10 times since it first released. I haven’t seen it in years. I had it on DVD but lost it.
You’re the definition of evolution my friend. A stellar example of prolonged discipline and advancement. Been watching you since the predator chronicals and you’re a killer. Let’s go.
The fact that this used to constantly play on Showtime told me that it was at least not critically loved because Showtime usually got the leftovers from HBO and Cinemax at the time but I was absolutely fascinated by it. I watched it at least a half a dozen times while it was airing and truly felt drawn in by it. I never followed up to actually see how well received it was but it will always have a spot in my heart.
I prefer the theatrical ending as well. Sometimes King's books don't always translate well to film but this one does, in my opinion. I'd love to see you do more breakdowns of King's movies and series, especially his older mini-series like the Tommyknockers and the Langoliers.
This film has one of the few theatrical endings that's better than the original/director cut endings. Just the complete look of shock on his wife's face hearing their daughter's voice. You can only imagine the heartbreak she must feel and the sense of relief he has. He has actual proof he survived the room and that what he experienced was real and actually happened. Such a great ending to a great film.
1408 is such an interesting take on horror bc it’s so much more than horror. The film is mostly just hopeless, there’s deep dread, despair and anguish, it’s why it’s such a great and underrated film.
Dude how do you do it. Its been years since i was a subscriber and your videos are always just so refreshing. The way you hold yourself makes it feel like we arent just watching a video but having a fun conversation with you. Keep up the good work my dude
I remember watching this movie as a kid and even tho horror movies scared the life out of me and would make me stay up for days I loved this one for some reason, amazing to see you cover it and I believe the first time I watched it I saw the first ending and the second time I saw the second ending if I am remembering correctly
I own this movie and have seen it a few times but I still screamed and chucked my phone when he was holding his daughter and she poofed away. Love it when I forget a good jump scare
In terms of the endings, I agree on the first and second. The first ending with Lilly realizing that he was neither lying nor delusional, and the happy-creepy combo of them clearly beginning to move on but also dealing with what happened in 1408 is great. Second ending had some good elements, but really could have cut various parts out to flow better. In terms of the third ending, I think it's kind of the opposite of what you suggested. The implication I got from that ending is that it's NOT a confirmation that it actually happened. Because we don't have another character's reaction to it in the form of Lily, it's still left very much up to audience interpretation whether it was real or just in his head. While I prefer the first ending, this kind of tracks with the film feeling like a metaphor for his obvious mental health issues in terms of the trauma related to his daughter's death. He's getting better, he's trying to move on, but it will always be with him even if it's not obvious to anyone else around him. The fourth ending feels like it ties more closely with the implications of the short story, where the person who saves him is also tempted to go into the room by the unusual lighting. Mike being lured to the room via a postcard from an unknown sender comes back around with his publicist encountering a similarly mysterious package that could draw him to investigate the room. Unlike the other endings, which seem to be generally positive or at least neutral/bittersweet, this one actually suggests that the room is still very much active and continuing to draw people in. I think it probably would've been better to use something that didn't bring up as many questions as the manuscript though, like sending him the tape recorder with the distorted sounds. The manuscript feels off to me for many of the reasons you mentioned.
19:09 Uh, yeah, I’d imagine! So did mine! I can hardly LOOK at my dad’s ashes because it feels so wrong for him to not be there, 1408 is a ruthless and merciless antagonist
Probably one of my favorite King adaptations. One thing, I'm not sure if you caught: In the movie, they kind of make Enslin out to be a Hunter Thompson-esque character. Which means he had a slight self destructive streak. I never knew about the publisher ending at all til I say your video. I first saw the "depressing" ending, which I much prefer. Not for the jump scare, I think it's dumb as well. The fact that he sacrificed himself, showed that he was finally dealing with the death of his daughter, rather than running from it. This brought about his redemption, which then allowed him to be at peace with his daughter at last. That's how I interpreted it. Had he just offed himself in another way, he would have been another trapped soul in the room. Thanks for covering this one.
27:22 not sure if anyone else has already said it, but I think it's basically saying that despite the other people and events that happened in the false escape were fake, him writing the book was what the room wanted, so the draft was real and the room sent it to the publisher, like it probably sent him the postcard. The room wants more victims so him writing a book and publishing it, making more people (ghost hunters and the usual ones that like to blow up the popularity of "haunted" places) want to visit the room is it's goal.
Dude... it's been YEARS since I watched this movie... and it's one of the very few that traumatized me so bad that I never forgot it. It was the first time I ever heard "it's only just begun" and it has haunted me ever since. I was hoping that watching Mista GG talk about it would help me get past the trauma... but NAHHH. I've had kids since my first watch. I'm re-traumatized even worse than the first time lol.
I watched this at a 6th grade sleepover as a child (and now adult) that cannnnnnot do scary movies and it literally still springs into my conscious every once in a while and scares the hell out of me.
I actually like the 4th ending? It sort of gives the same mystery as “who sent the postcard” and gives the illusion that the room itself finds opportunity to lure people despite how hard the staff try to keep people away

Yup, I lived on floor 23A in a high rise in Guangzhou, China and that was the first thing I thought of while watching this
Some western hotels also don't have a room 420 because of stoners stealing the signs and generally just being nuisances
Well the word for four in I think mandarin is the same for death. It's one of those Asian languages.
@@angrytheclown801 Similar in Japanese as well. That's why the skip the 4th floor.
There’s a line his father says that has always really stuck with me.
“As I was, you are. As I am, you will be.”
Really disturbing on a psychological level, especially seeing the father in that state.
Great review and analysis, Mista GG!
It’s a classic line from gravestones and the like. It reminds us how fleeting life is and that death is sure for all who live.
Look on me you passers by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now so you will be
Now think of death and follow me
Saw it on a headstone as a kid and it's always stuck with me
Easily one of the most chilling and best endings is when Lily realises Mike wasn't lying about his stay at 1408 and that he saw his daughter. One of my favourite Stephen King stories adapted into a movie
yup. that was the best ending for sure!
I like that ending too, but I always saw the one where he dies and ends up as a ghost, or whatever, until I saw this video lol
I love how there's a filter over the movie clips whenever you're talking about the story from the book, small touches like that makes a lot of difference and it's really appreciated.
If I can suggest a movie it would be House[House] (1977) this thing is a masterpiece
Seconding on the House recommendation, brings back memories of reading i-mockery back in high school
House is soooo good and completely unhinged
GG has some really great editors 👍
Fun fact about the story 1408: Steven King included the first draft and second draft of the opening scene in 1408 as part of his memoir/how to write book, "On Writing" as an example of what kind of edits and adjustments he makes between drafts.
Great book. Very interesting and helpful. I have it in paperback and hardcover.
I shall take this as a book recommendation.
Olin stayed inside the room with them as they were cleaning at all times and they were doing some shift things or whatever to make sure the room doesn't lock in on a person
i would let it just gather dust lol fuck that, condemn the whole goddamn floor bruh
@@xXobama0Xx Well given that they're done in 10 minutes means probably nothing more sinister then a quick dusting.
I was surprised how much I loved Cusack in this movie but he was perfect for the role (same as Samuel L Jackson).
Right
Eh... You're opinion...theatrical ending was kinda weak in my mind.
"Mike was not happy about the situation"
Comedic Understatement of the day
I prefer the theatrical version the most because Lilly hearing her daughter's voice again after her death is a lot more impactful to me compared to the other versions' endings.
@@noneofya6503 I'm glad someone said it
@@noneofya6503 he still could be in the room or at the very least he would think there is a potential he is which would cause massive anxiety.
that teatrical ending cassette player plottwist thing made me shiver
its so simple but was really effective
great shit
1408 is definitely on my traumatizing childhood experiences list. Even the overall "color" of the movie creeps me out to this day.

Exactly lmao
This reminds me of the true story I once heard where a guy had a wife and 7 year old daughter and he lived a happy life. But then one day they managed to wake him from his coma and his family wasn't real. He had to go through grief trauma therapy as for him, he'd spent 8 years with his family/daughter and they were very real to him. When he woke from his coma, he never had a wife and daughter. He was just at university as a young man who had hit his head hard after a prank went wrong. That's scary!
If this is what I think this is he had a son too. The lamp one right?
The reddit red lamp story. Classic
My favorite part of the short story is:
"He could still hear horns on Fifth, but they were now very distant. Did he still hear the saxophone? If so, the room had stolen its sweetness and melody and left only an atonal reedy drone, like the wind blowing across a hole in a dead man’s neck or a pop bottle filled with severed fingers..."
Great video, GG 🤘🏻
That's so specific 😂 Stephen King reeeeaally likes experimental indie music
The kid in me feel validated that I wasn't the only one mistaking cusak for cage lol
Also watched it a lot as a kid and also thought it was nick cage lmao ! I think this movie is why I have such high standards for any other horror movie I watch
I always confuse the two!
I really felt that Cusack/Cage mixup haha. Teenage me made the same mistake
So many people confuse them for each other, that's because they were both in the movie Face/Off(they were not,😂)
As an author, I must say his book signings are not necessarily terribly small. That's a regular show up for a regular writer.
There is no fate! You both were drawn in by the room to watch the movie!
I watched it on Amazon but keep seeing it on Stan wanting to watch it, wonder if it has the different ending?
i was honestly thinking about rewatching it just 15 mins ago before coming on here…lord
It hit new streaming this month , not too surprised humans on earth are seeing it in a relative time frame
I also thought this! I still think I may be . The smile he gives at the end is super scary
One of John Cusack's best performances. Was a fan of it since it released. Glad to see it getting some love
It's always such a pleasant surprise opening UA-cam and seeing something from you. HAPPY HOLIDAYS MISTA GG
1000% agree!!
It’s very rare for a person, especially an “internet famous” person to be:
- insightful
- funny
- kind
- hard working
- humble
- “cool” (whatever that is lmao)
But ya know what, I am confident MistaGG checks them all.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
27:58 He hired a Ghost Writer
The book and movie review combos are honestly becoming my favourite of your reviews. I love the parallels!
Let’s go.
The description of the evil is so simple and good. It's just a literal evil room. Nothing more nothing less. Just evil in 1 spot
The bit with the phone absolutely terrified me in the story, still get chills when I read it!
"This is Eight!!!!!" Absolutely terrifying!
Hotels and apartments usually don’t have a 13th floor. It either goes 12 to 14, or something like 12a, 12b, 14
I remember watching this movie as a teen and post office plot twist SHOOK ME.
No other twist in any story shook me like that ever since.
I love these back and forth videos between movies and their books. It's a phenomenal way to go through them and really enhances them both.
The amount of work and time put into this video got me to subscribe. Well done and look forward to more movie commentary.
I really appreciate when you said, "the guy that plays Monk in the 13 ghosts."
Dude... it's been YEARS since I watched this movie... and it's one of the very few that traumatized me so bad that I never forgot it.
Me too. I think the publisher will be the next victim. The manuscript, like the postcard, is bait that will lure him in.
Or it could mean that we're still in the room somehow.

I watched it as a kid, but to this day, just reading about it gives me chills. And I got spooked with just this video. Room 1408 might not be the scariest movie ever, but I dont remember being this spooked ever.
I really like this movie. This is the movie that made me like Cusack. He really fits in these misery-supposedly-spooky movies, Identity is also pretty good.
Also the 1st ending is the best one
I've always taken that moment where he somehow circles around the passage, back to the lobby, as though the room itself was giving him one more chance to not stay there.
I remember showing this movie to my friends years ago and being so confused about the ending because i remembered it differently. I seriously questioned my sanity until we googled it 😂
I cant believe you went from Chris Hanson Reviews to this ! Im still annoyed at that Cecil Hotel doc also! Here's to the 1M next year mate, good luck fella
I'm glad you like the ending where Lily hears the tape. I remember watching this movie on Netflix years ago and was highly disappointed that they went with the jump scare ending
1408 was the first paranormal/thriller movie that got me into the horror genre of movies. Glad you covered it on your youtube channel!
Somehow, despite loving 1408 ever since I saw it in theaters, I had no idea about the 4th (3rd in your list) ending. I knew about the publisher one, but the other one I'm just now learning about. Regardless, it really is a great horror movie, and it's a bit of a shame that people don't refer back to it that often when discussing great horror films.
One of the best short stories ive ever read. The selection this is from, everything's eventual, is solid for any fans of 1) short stories or 2) horror. Absolutely haunting.
