Wild Cards don't actually work as you describe them. They go in the middle of the table and they make the two symbols on them equivalent. So if it has the grid and dots on it, a player with a grid card has to face off against both grids and dots. You will never have multiple Face Offs going simultaneously.
@@MichaelNerman It's actually still really fun because it means you have to be constantly cross referencing your card with the wild card in the middle, which is just another thing distracting you from thinking of a word during a Face Off.
I know board games for kids are like... either watered down or dumb educational and not fun. But as a bilingual education teacher who works with English Language Learners this "anomia for kids" game looks AWESOME. You mean I'm gonna have to think about the phoneme the word starts with and find ANOTHER word with that phoneme? And you could change it. A word that rhymes. A word with the same ending sound. The word in English ...in Spanish. Thank you for showing us this! I look forward to playing this with my students when the world gets better.

Anomia X created one of the best moments in my memories of gaming out of hundreds of hours playing. With the right group... its a riot. I also learned that my wife knows way more than I anticipated about serial killers.

@@fabross09 that review is absolutely spot on. A group of friends of mine wanted to have a go at it but knew that at least 2 people in the group had gone through a pretty horrendous situation. We sat there and pruned the deck until we'd gotten rid of about 2 thirds of the cards. We played it for about 30 minutes and i'm not going to lie, we had some pretty good laughs. But then we were done and haven't played it since. It's just not that good a game and having to spend more time pruning the cards than playing the game is mroe time than i'm willing to spend on it.
I had a traumatic head injury while in the service (got tossed off a tank) that brought about anomic aphasia; I forget words. I'm also a polyglot so if I can't think of a word in one language I just use another. The weird thing is that I'm awesome at this game. No one in the family will play me. Everyone I've introduced to the game loves it.
@@sh4rk535 it's not about getting offended easily. What if a member of your group had been raped, would you be comfortable making rape jokes around them? What about if one of them had recently lost a family member to cancer? What about if one of them had been molested as a kid? There is a huge chance of upsetting someone at the table and it's not that they are easily offended, it's that you are joking about something that has seriously affected them.
VERY GOOD take on adult board games and I like what you had to say about the Anomia X version of being for diner parties. I actually think that's the exactly ideal use of the edition. Which I now want to get.
*GASP*...not flipping the cards away from you.....the cries of 'you saw it first' echo hauntingly in my memories. Absolutely amazing game, the last time I brought it to a family gathering not less than 3 copies were bought by different family members. BUT clearly stating that folks need to flip the card away from them is absolutely required to avoid your very competitive teenage cousins from yelling at each other for cheating :p
That, and that wild-cards go on top of each other in the middle (so you always have ONE symbol in front of you, but might need to pay attention to 2 symbols at once).
The best house rule for this game is that you can never use an Example that has already been said. It makes going through the deck a second or third time really fun as people call you out when you reuse a term since that’s at the top of your mind. Adds another level to the play.
For all the Germans searching unsuccesfully for the game ... It's published by Kosmos under a slightly different Name: "Blitzdings" The design is more colourful but the game is the same.
Quinns pulling a "does this rag smell like chloroform to you" on himself to finish a video is something I didn't see coming, even when he put the chloroform-soaked gun on the chloroform-soaked mantelpiece.

I too wondered about the Wildcard explanation and thought I've been wrong all this time, and then was directed to the comments. 😄 Anyone feel there should be a house rule for when you don't have any face up cards in front of you and your loss of the last card now means in a six player game you have to wait five turns without being able to win any cards?
@@MyOwnNameWasTaken I saw it, but at the end (SPOILERS) he mentioned he was sending everything back... with sort of a lukewarm finish about how every step he took into Go took him further away from his board gaming friends. Seeing a Goban making it into his collection makes it seem like the time he spent with the game was at least worth having it around... which is something I didn't know for sure at the end of his review. :)

I bought this game at a garage sale for $1 about 5 years ago without even knowing anything about it. I played it with a few friends shortly after that and have loved it ever since!
Anomia X looks quite appealing. It doesn't look like it's a crude (somehow more childish) version that would ruin the actual game. I'm tempted to get it now.
I've found that friends who are english as a second language do not tend to enjoy Anomia as much. Or at least for people who aren't as fluent it is less fun to not know words and more frustrating.
Anomia is somehow at my exact crossover point between 'games I recognise to be well designed' and 'games more stressful than times I stopped breathing'. I don't know what it is about it that hits my exact social alarm button every time but it's very good at that.
Every time I watch one of these reviews, I tell my self “I won’t get this one, I won’t get this one.” Yeah guess how that went? Love this channel to death, keep up the good work!

I have played anomia probably about 30 times and I will say it does have some flaws and would recommend a host of party games over it. One issue I have are that it does not work with people who take it too seriously. It causes these people to fight over small things like which way players should flip cards off the stack. The number of faceoffs that each person has in a game can vary drastically since they are random which can leave players feeling like they never had a chance to win. The person flipping the card is at a disadvantage which makes faceoffs feel more one-sided. Because of this, I have seen players sit and trying to memorize other peoples cards and even think of answers to some of them before flipping their card. This can lead to some groans from around the table and just general unpleasantness. All that being said I have had some fun games of anomia but I would not recommend people playing it in large quantities with the same people. Basiclly just stick with the base version.

Cards Against Humanity is a brilliantly designed boardgame in that it efficiently achieves its goal of making the players be against humans. I hate it.

I watched all the way to the end to see if Quinns was going to commit 100% to that chloroform joke. Was not disappointed.
