I'm in my office, working the overnight 12 hr shift. It's 2:25 am and I'm studying for grad school. Looking for my why I found it here, in this poem. With tears in my eyes, I've been reminded why I do this. Thank you Langston.

90 of the most important seconds of my life were when an elderly Black woman recited Langston Hughes' poem "Mother to Son" to me, as we marched together 60+ years ago in Wichita, as some people threw rocks at us.
To me, this poem says exactly why we should be strengthening our children so they can accept themselves as they were born instead of trying to sugar coat everything around them.
Major hardships but choosing to push forward. Parents are so critical to a child's positive development or lack thereof. Powerful poem by the great Langston Hughes.
