When I was a senior in high school in 79, Blackfoot, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Boston, Eagles, Yes, Rush, Peter Frampton, Led Zeppelin and many other great bands were all on the radio 24/ 7. So glad I grew up back then.

Blackfoot, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet, were all formed in Jacksonville Florida. Like all Southern Rock bands, their sound varied between hard songs and ballads, with elements of Blues, Country and Rock! Even the Allman Brothers had ties to Jacksonville and it's said that, Whipping Post, was written there!
The Allman Brothers definitely had a connection to Jacksonville they played at a local club call the comic book club before they started touring they did their first real concert at the Jacksonville coliseum and their last concert at the veterans arena...
Rickey Medlock .. Guitar and lead vocals Charlie Hargrett ..Lead guitar Greg T. Walker ..Bass Jackson "Thunder foot" Spires ..Drums The most underrated band in the history of music .. Thank you guys for the awesome reaction .. Love and Peace always
The band was formed in 1969 and was named Hammer. During the early spring of the same year, the band, after learning of another band on the West Coast named Hammer, decided to change their name to Blackfoot to represent the American Indian heritage of its members:[3] Jakson Spires (from Oklahoma) had a Cheyenne/French father and a Cherokee mother;[4] Rickey Medlocke's father was Lakota Sioux[5] and Blackfoot Indian, and his mother's side is Creek/Cherokee, Scottish and Irish; Greg "Two Wolf" Walker is part Eastern (Muskogee) Creek, a tribe recognized by the state of Florida, but not federally. Charlie Hargrett [6] was the only white man of the original, classic line-up. Although they are considered a "southern rock band", they have a great native american flavor to their songs in the drums and Ricky Medlockes vocals. wiki

As stated by many before me : next up try "Left Turn On A Red Light", "Road Fever" and "Wishing Well" from this same album. As for more southern rock, try The Marshall Tucker Band. They were back soon after headlining all those iconic venues like Hammersmith Odeon. Went down a storm every damn night. The live version of Highway song on record goes on much longer , recorded in England. When they played Reading Rock Festival there were Southern flags everywhere (just in support of their roots , non political). Great to see them on your channel 🙌🙌
This was the ultimate TRUCKER song...many many miles playing this song....headed down the highway in my 42 years as a trucker....LOVED IT....The ultimate "big hole" traveling song...thanks
The "Dueling" guitar sound was popular with "Southern Rock" bands of the era. Allman Bros, Lynard Skynard, Blackfoot and others all had dual lead or lead/rhythm players that could play like demons together. You can instantly tell if you're listening to some Southern Rock from the 70's/80's by that sound.
I heard Dickey Betts say one time that the reason why/inspiration for Southern Rock bands to have 2 (or more) guitars was the twin fiddles in Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys. Can't say if that is true or not, but if you ever listen to any Bob Wills songs from the 40's and early 50's it is definitely similar to the intertwining play of Southern Rock guitars. Food for thought. Great song. Great reaction.
Thanks for coming back to Blackfoot so fast. Next “Left Turn at a Red Light” this is very nostalgic. Heavily played on the radio…driving late at night and this would come on…perfection.
About ten years ago I had the distinct honor and pleasure of sitting in with former Blackfoot lead guitarist Charlie Hargrett in a couple of local rock shows here in central Florida. One of the nicest and personable celebrities I've ever met, he was still a monster on guitar in his mid 60's. Great reaction... there's a lot more to this band, check out 'Good Morning' from the Marauder album. It's where southern rock meets metal.
I just found you beautiful people......just saw you do the Moody blues a year ago. I got tears in my eyes watching your reactions....touched my soul. I am 61 years old and got the pleasure to grow up with these wonderful, meaningful song. Sorry I'm late.....God Bless and by all means continue. Much love
The Outlaws is another southern rock band worth checking out. Check out “Green Grass and High Tides” and “Ghostriders in the Sky.” Molly Hatchet’s cover of “Dreams I’ll Never See” is another big guitar song. Great songs all.
They are from Jacksonville, Forida (just like Skynrd) The line up for this album was Ricky Medlocke - lead vocalist/lead guitarist, Charlie Hargett - Rhythm/Lead Guitar, Greg T. Walker - Bass, and Jackson Spires - Drums. So they are absolutely "Southern Rock" Rick Medlocke's Grand Father "Shorty" played the harmonica on the song "Train Train" that you enjoyed the other day.
It's even more interesting than that- Shorty was in the house band for one of those variety shows that used to be all the rage on network tv. He brought on Rickey to play Eukale in his band- on national TV- when he wasn't yet 10 yrs old. So, he was a seasoned veteran even before Blackfoot, or his first stint in Skynyrd. Jackson "thunderfoot" Spires was a monster of a drummer- and Charlie was a freakin beast on guitar.
Shorty was actually Ricky's grandfather. But, yes, he killed it on harmonica. My recommendations for next time are "Diary of a Workingman", "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme", and "Wishing Well, " a cover of an old Free song.
Blackfoot is from Jacksonville, Fl. The lead singer, Ricky Medlocke grew up on the Westside next door to my uncle. He was raised by his grandfather Shorty Medlocke, the harmonica player in Train Train. Ricky was the original drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd here in Jax way back before they were famous.
Great reaction! Blackfoot was one of my favorites back in HS. The southern rock bands from Jacksonville were all friends and all interrelated. Blackfoot's Rickey Medlocke (the lead singer and lead guitarist) grew up in Jacksonville with Ronnie Van Zant and the Skynyrd guys. Rickey's grandfather, Shorty Medlocke, was one of the inspirations for Skynyrd's "Ballad of Curtis Loew". Rickey actually was in Skynyrd as the drummer for a while in the early 70's before the first Skynyrd album came out. He wrote or co-wrote 6 songs that they recorded in the Muscle Shoals studio. Thost tapes were rejected by the record companies, but later released after the Skynyrd plane crash first as a subset of the tapes on "Skynyrd's First... and Last" album, then in the 90's, the whole muscle shoals album was released. Some people claim that Rickey was "just a studio musician" for them at that time, but how many bands pay money to a studio to go in and record the songs written by the studio musician??? None. Early Skynyrd had Larry Junstrom (38 Special's bass player) as their bass player. After that, Greg T Walker (Blackfoot's bass player) was also in Skynyrd at the time when Rickey was drummer for Skynyrd. 38 Special's female backup singer is Dale Krantz Rossington, Gary Rossington's wife. Rickey came back to Skynyrd in the 90's as their lead guitarist, along with Hughie Thommason from the Outlaws. As your next Blackfoot reaction, I'd suggest Diary of a Workingman or Left Turn on a Red Light. Both are phenomenal.
I'm from Jacksonville FL and I must say some of the best southern rock ever came from Jacksonville. This is the music I grew up on.I'm so glad y'all reacted, and loved Blackfoot!!
One of the best songs ever in my lifetime!!!!! Since I was a teenager I have always listened to it!!!!! I'm 53 now and it will never get old!!!!!!! Amazing to listen to on my way to my sons house in Texas!!! I live in central Alabama so it is about a 13 hour drive down some old 2 way highways
Blackfoot wasn't as nationally known as Lynard Skynyrd or 38 Special but those that were really into southern rock knew who they were. Rickey Medlocke (vocals and guitar) is the only member I know. He was in Skynyrd for a time. They're from Jacksonville, Florida.
A lot of people suggested this the other day when you played "Train Train". Very cool that you paid attention to your subscribers. This is THE song from them.
I would say that train train was actually in earlier and bigger hit but yeah, both of them became iconic for blackfoot. And they were both off of the Same album, Blackfoot strikes.
@@adamprice3466 It's not quite that extreme of a difference in my experience, but yeah, exactly. Train Train was just constant and I loved it so much I did not care! And of course I also love Highway Song but yeah, I didn't hear it on the radio nearly as much. Although I did play the hell out of that Blackfoot Strikes album!
From wikipedia Blackfoot is an American Southern rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 1969. Though they primarily play with a Southern rock style, they are also known as a hard rock act.[1] The band's classic lineup consisted of guitarist and vocalist Rickey Medlocke, guitarist Charlie Hargrett, bassist Greg T. Walker, and drummer Jackson Spires.
Saw Blackfoot in Oct 2021 Columbia SC and they still have tons of energy. Was a great show, in a small venue and when they were done, they stepped off the stage, no security, and hung out with the crowd. Wish more bands did that
Saw Blackfoot in early 80’s in Florida. To cram more into small arena, entire seating was standing room only. Nobody cared because we were all too busy rockin out to that incredible rock. You guys played the first two of (IMHO) their three best songs. The third (again IMHO) is Fox Chase and it’s my favorite. I love the country harmonica followed by the hard driving rock riff. Everyone instantly turned into an expert air guitarist. Who the hell needed a chair.
As mentioned below you need to check out "Green Grass and High Tides" by The Outlaws (also known as the guitar army, 3 guitarists) another song with a similar vibe and killer riffs. While you are at it react to "Heard It in A Love Song" by the Marshall Tucker Band, revisit them. You will definitely dig them both!!! Keep up the great work.
@@SquirminHermanthe1eyedGerman 100% Agreed,, I Have Been Trying Forever To Get Them Started With Alabama Shakes & Figured Once They Did At Least One,, Everyone Else Would Suggest All The Others Like "Hold On" Etc..Etc.
Little trivia…Rickey Medlocke (guitar shredder and vocals) played with Lynryd Skynrd 71-72 and also from 1996 when they reformed with Ronnie’s little brother Johnny as their vocalist. Sounds so much like his brother.
For your own enjoyment, you guys should see them doing "Train, Train" live! It will definitely get you hyped!! Ricky Medlocke, the lead singer and guitarist is on fire in that video! By now, someone has probably mentioned he is very closely associated with Lynyrd Skynrd, both in the beginning of the band, and has been in the 2nd version of the band since they reformed. He is a Blackfoot Indian, hence the name of the band. You guys have now done 2 of my favorite songs of all-time, both by Blackfoot!! Yay for me!! Lawd knows it couldn't come at a better time, things have been pretty rocky here at my Appalachian trailer park, I really needed this! 🙏 God bless you and you adorable ❤️ family! I've been watching the next drumming legend in training too, lol! Luca has definitely got a musical ear!
Yes another Jacksonville Fl band! I still have a few pics of Blackfoot opening for Nugent in '79 when this album came out. This was Blackfoot's 'Free Bird' , sort of. Start off slow then end with all guitars tearing the stage apart. Much longer live. Thank u for this one too. 'Fox Chase' from their next album is banger.
So many great songs by Blackfoot....Wishing Well, Fly Away, and To hot to handle, are a couple more I'm sure you'll love. Go on down that rabbit hole, you won't be disappointed.
It doesn’t get any more southern than this. Skynyrd’s Free Bird with its blistering back and forth extended guitar outro most certainly laid out the blueprint for Highway Song. The Outlaws took note, too. Green Grass and High Tides, released a few years earlier, was their “Free Bird.” After a few verses (and tension building), the vocals take a back seat and all hell breaks loose to the finish line. Then you exhale.
Ever get the feelin that Ricky never got that Lynyrd Skynyrd out of his system? The end of that song calls back a little Freebird only bigger and much much better. He doesn't just string bend and noodle like the end of Freebird the man SHREDS and absolutely kills it, yet what song gets all the attention, go figure. It's a shame these guys don't get the recognition they deserve. Thanx for getting back to them so quick. I couldn't wait for you to get to it because I knew you'd love it. Peace
Wow, been a minute since I've heard this song, I used to love this song and feel sad for going so long without hearing it again. Now I am filled with nostalgia.
Yeah!!! So glad to hear this!!! Not as fire as Train Train, but I love it still! They sound a LOT like Lynyrd Skynyrd. A couple others that are more southern Rock, Fox Chase, Railroad Man and Left Turn on a Red Light!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
I just ran across your channel, and it's so refreshing to see young people diggin' on the same music I was diggin' on when I was in my early 20s (late 1970s). 🤯 The first time I heard this song, I was hooked on Blackfoot, and when I finally got around to purchasing the album and giving it a listen, I was hopelessly and forever hooked! Thanks for spotlighting this awesome song, and keep on featuring and rockin' to these awesome classics! 🤗🥰
They came from Jacksonville, Florida. 3 of the 4 members are Native American origin. Rickey Medlocke: Lead vocals, lead/ rhythm guitar Charlie Hargett: lead/rhythm guitar Greg T. Walker: Bass Jackson Spires: Drums Medlocke's dad wrote Train, Train Medlocke is currently with Lynyrd Skynyrd Blackfoot is still out there but there are no original members in the band.
So proud to be from Jacksonville. The home of Blackfoot and so many other great acts. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, 38 Special, Shinedown, Limp Bizit, and many others. I would love yall to react to a current act by the name of JJ Grey. He too is from Jacksonville and is an amazing act especially live you should check out the live versions of Lochloosa and The Sun is Shinning down! You all will not be disappointed!
I started seeing Blackfoot in 1980 when I was 16. 43 years later and Ive met Ricky several times here in Fort Myers. Same guy just older. Still one of the best lead men in a band and has a big heart. Skynyrd did a hurricane Ian benefit down here and they sounded like they did 30 years earlier. Saw him in the airport the last month and he said hi, like a normal person.
Definitely has that beautiful southern rock sound that captures you immediately. The vocals are outstanding and the guitars 🎸 so pleasant to the ears, with such great sentiments. Outstanding tune. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Southern Rock fan here since 1973. I love seeing the music that I’ve loved for 50 years, being heard by young folks for the first time. Watching you two groovin’ to Highway Song and Train, Train made my day! I subscribed, and looking forward to ya swinging’ to The Allman Brothers, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws, The Charlie Daniels Band, 38 Special, and, of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Peace
This song appealed to a wide swath of America at the time: Truckers, Greyhound and other bus line drivers, and especially touring bands and their crews. This is essentially their Turn The Page.
The lead guitar on this is Ricky Medlock. He was a founding member of Skynyrd but left before their 1st record deal. After the plane crash Ricky rejoined the band
Ricky Medlock is the lead singer and guitarist. He is in Lynard Skynard now. He is the one with snow white hair now. He was a founding member of Lynard Skynard back in the day.
as mentioned, several of the members of Blackfoot also played with Lynryd Skynyrd during the early 70's. I believe the co-founder of Blackfoot, Rickey Medlocke, is the lead singer on this song. Played drums with Skynyrd. Medlocke, born in Jacksonville, which is the home base of Skynyrd, has played with later renditions of Skynyrd from the mid 90's to some of their last shows a few years ago.
I saw Skynyrd back about 20 years ago with Rickey Medlocke at a Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga TN,great show,he is a great performer with Skynyrd and Blackfoot.
Rickey Medlocke IS Southern Rock & Roll. It’s in his blood. I love the opportunity he was given with Skynyrd, and love seeing him jam with them, but GOD do I wish Blackfoot could’ve made it. These guys are awesome and never really got the recognition they deserve.
Grew up in Fl at the height of Southern Rock...so many actually came out of Florida. Blackfoot is in the top 5 of southern rock bands of all time. Skynrd, Allman Brothers, Molly Hatcher, Outlaws, Little Feat, Marshall Tucker Band plus quite a few others. This genre does not get the credit it deserves. Lots of good players. Check out Atlanta Rythym Section too, if you haven't. I suggest "Spooky".

@@scrapeyhawkins5299You're wrong..Rickey was a drummer for them in the early day!!!
Right on that..He was a drummer for them early on..Very tallented guy..Sings with only one lung..Southern BADASS!!!
"Green Grass and High Tides" is just legendary.
Another great choice. BLACKFOOT is badass. Next listen to their song Road Fever. More Blackfoot.
Big Mama Thorton + Janis Joplin = Alabama Shakes "Don't Wanna Fight" (Live At Capital Studio A)...Put On Your Seatbelts For This One!!..TRUTH!!
Like that Alabama Shakes song Hold On also
@@SquirminHermanthe1eyedGerman 100% Agreed,, I Have Been Trying Forever To Get Them Started With Alabama Shakes & Figured Once They Did At Least One,, Everyone Else Would Suggest All The Others Like "Hold On" Etc..Etc.
Please react to Deep Purple, Child in Time (live 1970). Possibly the greatest live rock performance of all time!
One of the best instrumental runs ever played. I love this band!
You guys are spot on with your breakdowns, Right on! I got to hear one of my favs (Blackfoot) with new ears.... yours. Much love.
Love this channel for introducing some FIRE tracks to an old man for the first time. Damn that rocked. ✌️
The way yall look at each other and smile when the vocal's came in you can tell yall are really enjoying the music.
I remember this song playing on a.m. radio, riding in the car with my family on a country road with pink skies!
This drummer, whoever he is, deserves a shout out. He is really excellent! ✌️❤️
Jackson 'Thunderfoot' Spires !!
Jackson “Thunderfoot” Spires - R.I.P.
So many great songs by Blackfoot....Wishing Well, Fly Away, and To hot to handle, are a couple more I'm sure you'll love. Go on down that rabbit hole, you won't be disappointed.
Gotta say Outlaws "Green Grass and High Tides" for an ultimate 🎸 solo!!
It seemed that every Southern Rock band of the era had an anthem song. This was Blackfoot’s, and IMHO, it is the best anthem song ever, by anyone.
The Outlaws "Hurry Sundown"...Nuff Said.
This is an example of good ole southern rock! It’s sad that southern rock just disappeared. Such good down to earth soul music! Can’t go wrong
Smiling large! Great reaction! And as always thanks for keeping great music alive!
The southern rock guitarists were every one amazing. Allman Bros. Lynyrd Skynyrd. Outlaws. Marshall Tucker. Blackfoot. 38 Special.
I am speechless on how y'all seem to enjoy.....Notice how you feel inside....the joy...happiness....love...that's real music....love y'all
Aww, I can't see your replies
Richie Medlock is awesome on vocals and shreds a mean guitar to boot
fo sho!!!! Great tune:)
Blackfoot should be in the rock & roll hall of fame..
The first two Blackfoot albums No Reservations and Flying High, are kinda underrated but real good. I own them both on Vinyl.
If you like that kind of solo then there is only one better....The Outlaws Green Grassland High Tides. One of the greatest guitar songs ever
I love your reactions to Blackfoot. As I was listening the band The Outlaws came to mind with songs like Hurry Sundown and Green Grass and High Tides.
Ricky Medlocke plays with Lynard Skynard now. He was the lead and vocals of Blackfoot
They came from Jacksonville, Florida.
3 of the 4 members are Native American origin.
Rickey Medlocke: Lead vocals, lead/ rhythm guitar
Charlie Hargett: lead/rhythm guitar
Greg T. Walker: Bass
Jackson Spires: Drums
Medlocke's dad wrote Train, Train
Medlocke is currently with Lynyrd Skynyrd
Blackfoot is still out there but there are no original members in the band.
Saw them in concert back in the 80’s with Nazareth. Yeah I like Train, Train.
Man, thing song really touches my soul and always brings tears to my eyes there at the end. "but I stand alone, on the edge of a dream."
Wow, first time for me too. Thanks! Awesome song and group! Native American too! 👏❤️
I think you will like Atlanta Rhythm Section as well in terms of southern rock. So Into You, Spooky and Imaginary Lover are some of their hits.
LUV that group. Wicked underrated. Very sad to see Dean Daughtry's passing recently. Great suggestion
Adore Atlanta Rhythm Section. One of my favorites of all time. Definitely start with Imaginary Lover!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Georgia Rhythm
homesick A R S
This song sounds like “Green grass and high tides” by the The Outlaws they were part of the Florida Guitar Army, badass southern rock!!!!
I was born and raised in the carnival and circus business this song was written for us....lol.
Love some classic southern rock. Its its own special vibe, one of their best. Thanx so much, take care, Peace
as mentioned, several of the members of Blackfoot also played with Lynryd Skynyrd during the early 70's.
I saw Skynyrd back about 20 years ago with Rickey Medlocke at a Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga TN,great show,he is a great performer with Skynyrd and Blackfoot.
hes still in skynyrd now
@@kevinwallis2194 But on guitar rather than drums this time around
He also played bass for a brief time early on.
Blackfoot, another charter member of the Florida Guitar Army. Allman's, Skynyrd, .38 Special, Outlaws, Molly Hatchet.
Marshall Tuckers "24 Hours at a Time" and "Fire on the Mountain" - now there's some more great highway driving music.
Back when Southern Rock ruled the FM airways!
Yep 👍
Grew up in Fl at the height of Southern Rock...so many actually came out of Florida. Blackfoot is in the top 5 of southern rock bands of all time. Skynrd, Allman Brothers, Molly Hatcher, Outlaws, Little Feat, Marshall Tucker Band plus quite a few others. This genre does not get the credit it deserves. Lots of good players. Check out Atlanta Rythym Section too, if you haven't. I suggest "Spooky".
One of the all time great American native bands.
Love you both so much ..Thanking you sharing all kind of music ...Proud to be part of the entertainment
Great reaction! Another good jam from Blackfoot is 'I got a line on you'
Just found you two yesterday and I love you already.. You two are jewels..
Great reaction and great song.. I subscribed.
Thank you for adding value to my life.. ❤💯
You could pick ANY song on that album and it would be FIRE!!
Blackfoot is a great band. Got to see them live in '83.
BLACKFOOT!
"Rattlesnake Rockin Roller"
"Fox Chase"
"Gimme Gimme Gimme"
