    Hey Houston area newish gardener. Cool to see a channel with my exact climate. I actually ordered my heat mat today, i figure it’s a good time to start seeds for my first in ground garden this spring.

      Welcome to the channel! My goal for this will be to offer insight into how to grow more food more simply with respect to Houston's challenges. If you have anything you'd like to see in the future, feel free to let me know. I also have a podcast that goes more in depth for each of these UA-cam videos and an Instagram with real time advice and Q&A opportunities on Fridays.

    I agree with all of it. I don't start inside anymore bc I have a small greenhouse and nothing beats natural light. When I use to start inside, it was always a fight with leggy plants. Oh, I know that exact feeling you had at the end. Someone always wants to get in the shot. Keep it going. You have a perfect voice for educational videos.

      I am moving these little guys into the greenhouse this weekend. I am officially out of room under the grow light as of today, and other plants need the space!

    I have been starting my seeds wrong apparently! Lol! Thank you for the video walkthrough of the proper way. I’m about to start my fall seeds indoors and I’m excited to have more success following your tips. Thanks friend!

    @stampguy67… I love the idea of the bigger plastic containers! I haven’t tried this before, snd my seed starting success has been sporadic… I will certainly try this!

      Yes, let me know if you try it. I made up this method to fix my many errors and save space.

    I like to use salt and pepper shakers or sugar shakers for tiny seeds to sprinkle them on top of the moist growing medium
    I would like to see a video on composting

      Thanks for watching! You are in luck. I started with basics for my first videos and have 3 videos that talk about composting, how compost is made on a commercial scale that you can replicate at home, and alternate composting. I also have podcasts that go along with each and are more detailed. In the podcasts I also talk about composting methods I cannot film (because I do not have those composting set ups yet) like worm composting and types of worms as well as Bokashi composting. The problem I've found using a soilless medium is that the plants don't transplant well once I'm ready to move them to the garden. In my master gardener class, we added garden soil into the mix and transplants did MUCH better when time came to move them to the garden. I believe that's what is recommended from Texas A&M, as well...since our program was under their auspices.

      Oh, yes, I am a Master Gardener, studied horticulture at A&M, and taught several of the MG training classes the past couple years, and I completely agree with you. So, this video just shows seed starting in soil-less medium. This video stops at first true leaves forming, and after this point, more steps need to be added to the growing process to be successful before transplants go outdoors. What I've found is that people get really confused if they are new to indoor growing especially with extra materials like the heat mat and water reservoir. Since this video covers 4 weeks of time (and I started seeds about 8-10 weeks before last frost date), later steps will be shown in a step 2 to show re-potting in a real soil with compost, light fertilizing, acclimating to outdoors, and a trick for planting. Later videos will show pruning, training, and timing fertilizers for each type of nightshade. You have a good point, though, and I will make an effort to let people know next steps are coming and where they are at in the process when the video ends. I really appreciate the feedback!!!

    @Chichisweets Using a soiless medium is a great tip! I need more tips on dealing w/ aphids & beetles killing my veggies in the garden. I’m using Neem/ soap spray now, but in summer nothing works.

      If you don't already follow me on instagram (@turnyourheadandscoff), feel free. I do Q&A on Fridays for specific questions. I will actually be posting a 15 second aphid reel on that platform soon. Best way to get rid of aphids is a hard spray of the water hose unless you already have the white mealy bug destroyers eating them for you. Just a few beneficial insects will control a population of bad bugs. I usually only treat pests when the populations really get out of control, though. For other beetles, try to find the eggs on the back of leaves before they hatch. Once they do, I really like just tossing them into soapy water if you start a habit of bringing a cup out with you when you check your garden. Neem or orange oil (when it's not hot) is great to spray before a population lays eggs because the surface is slick, and the eggs won't stick.

    @stampguy67… I would like to see an episode on what causes seedling s to get spindly and topple over- I have this happen every year.😔

    • @TurnYourHeadandScoff
      @TurnYourHeadandScoff  2 роки тому

      I'll give you the tip now and try to show some visual aids on preventing and fixing the problem later on. Many seedlings (like the tomato from this video) get spindly when they are started indoors and don't get under the grow light or close enough to the grow light fast enough. Many seedlings can be re-potted into soil that covers more of the stem to prop them up when they are still young (like the stage the video shows). With indeterminate tomato plants and squash, I actually will cover the stem at any point in the growing stage that it needs more support. Both plants as well as many others will grow roots from the stem, and these covered sections will sprout roots eventually. You never want to plant anything too deep, but an extra 1"-2" of soil is fine.

    Do you use any fertilizer like fish emulsion?

    • @TurnYourHeadandScoff
      @TurnYourHeadandScoff  2 роки тому

      I do use fish emulsion. I am careful not to reveal too many future steps in a video because I think it gets confusing for new gardeners. I tried to start these plants a month earlier than I would expect anyone else to in my area, and then I can film separating seedling plants, fertilizing, and then acclimating to the outdoor temperatures before planting. I found that these 3 things are the most likely ways a newer gardener will kill a plant that they've worked hard to grow indoors. Even experienced gardeners may have a life event distract them and mistakes get made, so I hope the "part 2" will be a helpful reminder. "Part 3" for these will be outdoor care, pruning, staking, and time specific fertilizing for biggest and baddest crops and how to get more than 1 crop from a plant.

    I am currently starting my pepper seeds off now. My latest video shows all the cross pollinations of peppers that I'm going to grow this year. Good Luck for 2022 :)

      Thank you! I'll definitely take a look at your videos! I cross roses and have some bean crossing just for fun because it offers quick results. Crossing peppers sounds a lot more interesting!
