- 7 string guitars used to cost quite a bit of money, but this Ibanez proves that you don't have to break the bank to get started with a working 7 string!

What I love about your videos is that you aren't a "metal guy", but you still take in consideration us "metal guys". Thank you....
I appreciate the inexpensive models you review. Thank you for it.
nice seeing affordable guitar reviews not just the $5k bracket!
I try
And you go good. Very good. Glad that Fricke turn me on to your show. Should buy you both a beer. Good Germany beer.

This guy gives the perfect review, being straightforward with the facts and analysis of the guitar, and encompassing all of its aspects. I also love the nickname "your grandma's kitchen table guitar". Thanks for the great review!
This channel is top notch. I'm more a bass player, I started watching you from your Aeroband "guitar" video. Love your honesty, and your willingness to review cheap stuff for the destitute individuals such as myself.
Fantastic video, I enjoyed every minute thanks my man 🙏🏼
i just recently got the 6 string version and love it so comfy hard to put down
I recently purchased an Ibanez rga7421fm. At first I didn't care much for it. Dialing in the right tones on a reliable amp and an e.q pedal ( which every player should own) anyway made a huge difference. Great guitar on a budget. Personal preference and patience saves lots of money
I recently bought a second hand RGA42FM for a few hundred bucks, it has the same type of bridge, same pickups, same tuning machines. Like you said, they're not high end components but for that price range they're a great platform to update it for yourself: I upgraded the pups to Seymour Duncan Pegasus / Sentient and I enjoy playing it as much as I enjoy my $2.5K+ Kiesel or Ibanez Prestige guitars. For $60 you can buy a Gotoh hard tail bridge that fits the routing, plenty of options for locking tuners, Tusk nut should be also easy to swap. But the "base" is solid.
Dude, I NEED to know how you do you're screen effects; they're immaculate.
Also thanks for review the more inexpensive range Ibanez guitars.
Really loving the Tool/Mastodon/Korn esque riffing
Nice review as always
You're right about floating bridge guitars on the cheaper side. I tried putting some higher gauge strings mine once and rather than the strings breaking, they just about pulled the whole damn bridge off the body of the guitar.
Very entertaining and informative. Thank you
Already did write it in a comment and will repeat it as often as you keep repeating it Henning: your anxiety about inexpensive Floyd-Style trems is displaced. Especially Ibanez really got their shit together with their trems in the 400 euro pricerange. I got one with a ... edge zero II or somesuch (?) and it works just beautifully, is extremely reliable in my experience and even has adjustable tension and got a zero-point return bar thingy. Its great.
IF you want a Floyd style trem, THEN go for the Ibanez ones is what I say.
The Edge Zero 2 is very good. It has locking studs as well. You won’t have any tuning troubles with it. Even a lot of the signature artists with Ibanez tour with the Indonesian versions (lower priced) of their guitars and most of them have the EZ2.
yep, they are, my mid tier edge zero zps works great, is just doesnt take much of a beating if you wanna go full Steve Vai crazy on it but that´s why he tours with a ton of guitars as well, also, after more than 10 years and its fair share of calibrations, the metal does wear out probably sooner than the higher tier ones that have more solid alloys
It’s so beautiful. I’ll buy it either just to put it on display or mod the hell out of it.
I bought this model's distant cousin the RG7321 in 2010 and was blown away by the quality for a $400 guitar (at the time). It is my only 7-string and pretty much the only one I need. Ibanez is doing it right \m/
First, this is the most expensive guitar I own. Only musical instrument I own in that price range is my drum kit. I get that people with a bigger music budget might not consider these instruments as their main instrument, but I don't play professionally, my music budget is limited, and this guitar is great at that price range. It is now my main guitar.
The frets felt a bit rough out of the box, but they settled well. I would have preferred the knobs more out of the way but I get others prefer them closer. Otherwise no complaints.
One thing that should be emphasized is the 5 way switch settings. I really love the great range given in the 5-way switch. It's hard to find a 7 string at that price range that has a parallel humbucker setting, and that setting is my favorite. Very bluesy.
Second, I took a photo of this guitar on my kitchen table, and it"s really well camouflaged. :)
On the orange, he sounded exactly like Rivers of Nihil. For Ibanez rg’s, they like low gain with high treble and full mids. They don’t like full gain or scooping.
I had/still have an RG7321. The one I had was very nice to play. Ended up getting it signed by some band named Dream Theater and pretty much retired it so I didn't mess it up. But later on...wanting to play a 7 string badly. I bought a 7 string Destroyer body off Ebay and put the neck and parts on that body. And wow! It sounds massively different with the Destroyer body. Then more recently I bought an RG7pcmltd aka the 30th anniversary model. I find the Ibanez 7s more comfortable than other ones I've played.
> "...some band named Dream Theater..."
Hey, Great video - THANKS!... All I can get down here in Colombia are Ibanez guitars under $900. Looks like a great guitar for the $$$. Cheers!
I’ve had the same model for a year and a half and it’s my favorite guitar that I own.
How's it holding up? I'm in market for a 7 string and this seems a good entry for $400
I have one in cherry fudge from 2000. I love the tone on the neck pickup.
Same name, different guitar. Made in Japan instead of Indonesia. Different woods, neck and pickups. Maybe more.
Got to compare a MiJ RG421 with my Indonesian made model at a jam once. Better fretwork, nicer pickups. Not that the Indonesian one was bad, just worse than the Japanse one
got a pretty used one a while ago, nice basic 7 string ibanez. i might eventually get a brand new one and mod it, unless i try and love the new iceman first
More of these affordable reviews!
This guitar is a master piece
Thanks for the review! I just have this exact same model since 2 month. First 7 string. I'm happy with the lightness and sweet easy to play with, but not so much with the sound. Very muddy and flat. I changed the pickup for the Fishman Fluence Keith Merrow Custom Series (for a heavy riffer like me) and it's changing the whole thing! I'm not a experience man for this but work well for sure for entry in the 7 string family!
If anyone has some input for high bright gain setting with this one, i'm listening :)
Did you have to reroute the pickup cavity to fit the Fishmans in?
@@Grindermetalhead No cavity rebuilt, but all the connection was redo because passif pickups before and active after. My luthier did a good job though
This guy has some nice rig setup :0
I've been considering buying this guitar for some time, but then I changed my mind and decided to save up some more money and get Solar A2.7C because in every review of the Ibanez I found people were bitching about the pickups being too muddy. Just as I was about to buy Solar, I lost my job and had to reallocate my savings to get me through until I find another job, so now I kinda regret not buying the Ibanez when I had the chance.
I hope you get the money to buy the guitar you want.
Got one of these for 250 pound second hand and a free case, was gonna just clean it and sell it but I might keep it now
I am considering taking the plunge into the 7-string world, and this seems like a decent entry level option.
On a side note, will there be thousands of helium-filled Henning face helium balloons festooning the big event you're throwing? I think there should be.
Shelter cats rock!
I have an Ibanez RGA742FM and it isn't much more expensive, but it looks much better I believe. I really love this guitar, pretty much everything is the same. I only had to change the pickups, because as you hear, they aren't good at all. For me, it's totally worth for around 470€.
They should keep the 2 stripes behind the neck, that's a nice aesthetic!
“I don’t know what I’m doing, but it’s fun!”
Hahahahaha legend.
Hahaha they inventeď BMW M4 with this slogan.🤣🤣🤣
Bought one of these really beat up for 200$ at my local shop (support small business), and since it had the walnut finish (mine is the mahogany body model, so it's much darker than this one) it looked more reliced than damaged since there wasn't any paint chipping. So I decided to give it a red tortoise pickguard and swap all the hardware for gold. Cost me about 150$ in upgrades, and now I have an aged, yet classy looking CHUG MACHINE, that also doubles as a jazz guitar. Never getting rid of it.
I own one of those, it was indeed my 'dive into 7string shit' guitar! It took a little adjusting, but it's a great guitar for that price.
I like it. I like it a lot. And i don't have a seven string, so i could justify buying this
Subbed! Could you by any chance do a review on the rg8?
I'm still playing my rg550 from 1990. And my Jem.
My Jem is a 6.... But I do have an Ibanez 7 String. Pretty awesome .
Wasn't expecting those new woods to sound good on a cheap model, pretty good.
tonewood doesnt fucking exist
Some people call floor guitars "piano" and that confuses me
Awesome video Henning !! I do love the look of it actually !! But is it REALLY break the bank vs the HB 7 string models ?
This is a more solid guitar than the 160 Euro HBs
@@EytschPi42 ty for the reply sir & again hope your event goes awesomely !! :)
Dude youre fucking hilarious man, just gained a sub! Cheers! 🤘🏻👏🏻
Thanks for making a point of reviewing affordable stuff.
I think though, if price was my main consideration here, I'd just get a Harley Benton 7-string, which are cheaper than this even for the top spec (and prettier).
Would be cool to see a shoot out between budget level 7-string models from companies like Ibanez, Schecter, Jackson, Legator, LTD, etc., and compare them to the higher end Harley Bentons.
That would be a dope ass video
Can you please demo the tremolo version of this guitar.??? ☺
I just picked one of these at a pawn shop for $225, couldn't pass it up! I may sell my Schecter C-7 Diamond Series, it's so heavy compared to the RG, and the RG just looks cooler (and matches my 5 other RGs shape-wise, I have OCD).
6:58 So the tape you get with the synergy amps is to tape your socks on before Rocking !
You should have demoed it with Browne
yep, i have mid range rg , floyd rose and dont stay in tune if i whack it, for gently pushing the floyd its okay but dont expect to go dimebag with that price range.
Surprisingly enough, the trem on Sterling JP70's stays in time super well for Not having a locking nut. Highly recommend.
Thanks for all the informative and fun reviews. Perhaps it's not easy to obtain for you, but I'm curious what you think of a Kiesel Vader V6.
Kiesel isn’t interested to work with me, I asked
@@EytschPi42 Thanks for the answer. Maybe in the future, who knows.
@@EytschPi42 I wonder why they're not interested. You're not known for breaking guitars. And you're a friendly German. Oh well. Their loss.
Can u review Jackson js22 7 too?? Btw really appreciate ur thinking
seconded
they are HORRIBLE!!!
I have a rg7321, the jackson js22 7, then got an agile 7. my agile is by far the best in my opinion. just traded my jackson 7 for an ltd viper 200fm that needs some work.
@@DeMoNicslipknot agile is not in the cheap category
I bought a JS22-7 about a year ago. Looks awesome but it's garbage stock. I can't wait to afford to mod this thing out. Needs tuners, Pickups and bridge. The neck feels super cheap too. Jackson doesn't know what they're doing anymore. I'd definitely go with an Ibanez instead. Or an LTD 7 string. Or the Harley Benton Baritone SB7. I wish I could have played on the JS22-7 before I bought it. I ordered it thinking I could trust Jackson. I had to give it a full set up and the frets were razor sharp on both sides. My fingers were shredded really bad until I filed the frets down. I called Muiscians freind about it. The representative told me if they sent me another one it'd probably just have the same issues. I absolutely don't recommend the JS22-7 if you're on a budget. Unless it's used and you plan on putting money into it.
Ahhh!!! My Socks! They just got rocked off!
weird thing to say but feel like you would be an awesome boss
What happened to the nut? Is it well fill it? Seems like the 7th string its a bit inside the neck. Is that normal?
4 piece body that means it's even more stable than the neck right? :D
I have been going about this all wrong, clearly I need to start with this guitar if I'm wanting to get the "brown sound".
Thank you for clearing that up for me, Henning! 🤘😎🎸
Enjoy seeing something on your channel that I can actually afford...you need to make more of these types of vids....also some amps that are in the sub 1000 price range
Where's Glenn?? Get him out of the basement will u please! Haha Glenn is freaking Awsome. Thanks for the Reviews. Helps alot 😀
Perfect candidate for a refinish, how about purple pimp gold metal flake?
Still don't know if it djents though. Tones not dialed tightly enough :/
Easy truss rod access only on guitars that you may have to actually adjust more than twice....
please review the Ibanez RGMS7/8
Wizard lll neck is 2mm longer on last fret than wizard ll
What is that noise at 7:08 ???
Weird question: Get an inexpensive 7 string like this or should I just get me a Digitech The Drop for my existing 6 string guitar? Pros and cons?
you will write different things on the 7 string, it is about the inspiration as well
@@EytschPi42 You expect too much from me :) But how about tone?
I have tried the drop+6 string combo. The drop affects your tone when it comes to lower settings(4+halfsteps) by taking away from your output and making your tone really dark. I am heading to the local guitar shop to buy exactly this guitar.
is the top of the body solid or is it a veneer?
Sarkasm Mode on: looks like made from Grandma's coffee table 🤣🤣
Be nice to Grandma's table. Dad was made on it...... old gal was a hoot in her time. Peace!

Lord Dr George Dufort LLB ITCCS world HQ Brussels no wait. Hahahaha
I don't own an Ibanez that cost over $800. I own a RG470 and a RGIB21. The RG470 (bought in 1994) costed me $700 (case included) and the RGIB21 cost me right at $800 (case not included). I've tried an Ibanez that cost over $1000 and it didn't play better than either of mine. I'm sure if I could afford it, I would own one but perfectly happy with what I have. I do want a RG7421 (7 string) to add for playing options.
Could you do more affordable Jackson's?
that is up to Jackson
This replaced the RG7321, all specs the same except the woods... I have one from 2004 that is still my main. 🔥
How heavy is yours? Looking for light...

@@djflashpoint That's still a beast...
Well this guitar is too good as, I have been using this guitar for a more than 3 years, I’m using it for live gigs, it never disappointed me,
I have put the .10 Ernie ball hybrid string guage tune to ADADGBE, to 445hz frequency, the guitar sounds incredible, for tone I use high gain patch on my boss GT 100 and mostly I use the neck pick up for riffs and inner switch to divide the power of of the guitar to low down the effects to get control over their guitar, overall experience of this guitar is amazing, just understand the behaviour of the guitar what exactly she is telling you, and wizard neck gives you the next level accessibility to drive your shreds.
There is ,lot to say about this guitar.
If someone is going to buys this guitar, he can trust this guitar for long run.
Well for guitarist price doesn’t matter, the requirements does matter, that’s all, if someone want for upgrade to this guitar, he can go for this guitar,
"and it's gonna rock your socks off"
lol
Can you review a non-7/8/9 string extended range?

Hi sir, just want to ask which one you can suggest an Amarok 7 or this ibanez Rga7421fm
I'd say Amarok 7, please use my Thomann link if you buy one... click on ANY link before you buy
@@EytschPi42sorry sir, what i mean is the new Ibanez Rga742fm vs amarok 7 sir.. Sure sir will use any link when i buy. Thank you
well great guitar channel vsauce michele
Edge zero II is reliable so far.
Saw this in the music shop. Thanks for reviewing. Sounds very "Eww!" Now I know to avoid meranti wood type.
Ibanez seems to have a huge problem with realising that affordable 7 strings need extended scale too. I love ibanez, and I love my RG7421PB but goddamn does reserving baritone scales for higher end stuff get annoying as hell.
@@fredriksvard2603 I had an RGMS7 and didn't get along with it personally. Felt super boomy and weird since I was hoping to use it for drop E etc. Maybe I just didn't gel with the 27" scale for going that low.
In terms of well crafted baritone scales guitars (particularly 7 string) ibanez really need to step up the game. Short scales for 7 strings are just going to put people off from experimenting cause even drop A is flubby on a 25.5
@@fredriksvard2603 oh man Hapas would honestly be right at the top of my boutique list too. Can't remember the name of the model, but the ones they did for Greg of Paradise Lost look killer. Like a reimagined Ibanez FTM333
Even most of there premium models don't have that extended scale, apart from the RGD series
@@antenna7002 which is also annoying. I really dislike the fact that ibanez always have 1 or 2 super weird spec choices on their extended range stuff. Still love the feel of them for the most part though
@@tarkenton3895 I swear, RGDs are kinda rare TBH. But oh my god esp are so much worse, I don't think they have budget 7 strings
Nice video, but something doesn't sound right with your sound. I haven't watched for a while so I don't know which it's exclusive for this video.
The 's' sounds are very sharp imo, which puts emphasis on your lisp. Just letting you know, maybe my ears are weird too
But does it Djent
does the dog come with it?
For 439euros I'll paint it myself aha.
Lmao
I'm actually in the process of refinishing my RG421. I had the body and headstock ready for paint in a day.
6 months later it's still not done but that's my fault. It's more a rebuild than a refinish at this point.
Anyway, when sanding be very careful around the pickup cavities. You'll sand down those edges in no time. Looks horrible and this model doesn't have pickup rings or pickguard to hide mistakes under.
I got an RG752fx Prestige, and truth be told, tone wise there isnt a huge difference between it and this guitar. The prestige does sound better, but it's not dramatically different. This guitar ofc has generic pickups, so swapping them would help. Just thought I'd point that out for anyone wondering whether to get an expensive 7 string or a lower cost one. The biggest reason to buy a prestige is to get something with better craftsmanship and better materials, and parts... aka more durable bridge, better leveled frets , better pickups (sometimes), tuners, and I'm assuming pricier woods... Tone wise though they're not hugely different, and playability should be close as well since the scale length and neck are almost the same in most Ibanez '
Henning, nenn den Teufel doch beim Namen... "It has no guitar tit!"
25.5 inch scale on a 7 string? Kinda weird. Infact the neck looks short than the usual.
25,5 inch scale works fine if you play in A standard but lower tham that will get problems
They're more 7 strings with the standard scale than they're with baritone scale
Got to say - Anderson’s are the worst for “affordable” apparently £800 is affordable 🙄 the average and apparently £1500 isn’t breaking the bank - baring in mind most teenagers up to 26 yr olds probably only earn about 1500 max per month. Wouldn’t mind but half the time the shit they push isn’t the best you can get for budget. A learning guitarist could get one of these Ibanez fairly priced guitars and a half decent amp for 800
My advice for any learner is buy a low end Ibanez and fork out on a line 6 helix as it’s all they would need for a very long time .
But I’m not trying to sell kit with massive overheads because I’m based in the south of England 🙄
Nothing wrong with her $300 for a setup and some new pickups won't fix.
