A machine gun with a cooling fan in 1915-16, then the M1917 Browning machine gun came with a water cooling system. . Yeah, works like a computer to me.
Probably more in the vicinity of a drum, I guess. But whatever it was, I think it is relatively safe to assume the rifle worked as intended with the 5rd-mag. Even a guy like Ross most likely would not have had tinkered with designing a high-cap feed for a gun that didn´t work at all.
I think you may be right, Mike. On the right side, there's also a chunk of stock cut away next to the bolt. Would make sense for a belt system to need ingress and egress holes opposite each other.

Was there any documentation on just how effective that force air cooling was though? Its obviously impractical, but I'd be interested to know how well it actually worked.
Considering it only works when the gun is firing, probably not very well. The latent heat from inside the chamber would take time to be absorbed through the barrel, by the time that happened the fan would have stopped spinning. It would remove a small amount of heat if the gun was immediately reloaded and fired again but I doubt it would move enough air to make any difference overall. To be really effective it needs to spin very fast for more than a couple of seconds after the gun stops firing.
@@StormBringare When that fan stops spinning it will impede the airflow quite a bit, it's just a flat disc with small blades that have been cut and bent to shape. The Lewis had no restriction to airflow.
