Normally in big game rifles, one has the choice of either a double barrel or a bolt action (semi autos being generally eschewed as not reliable enough). After the surely unnerving experience of being charged by three elephants simultaneously, however, Hungarian hunter Joseph Szecsei decided he wanted both the immediate followup shot of the double barrel and the capacity of the bolt action all in a single rifle. So working with Fuchs Fine Guns in Austria, he created just that - a double barrel bolt action rifle.
The system uses six locking lugs on the rear end of the bolt to lock two bolts and chambers, and a dual magazine which holds three extra rounds for each barrel. The guns are made to order for the very high end of the market, and are available in pretty much your choice of caliber - this particular example is in .416 Remington Magnum. Interestingly, Fuchs also makes an over/under pattern of this system as well as a miniaturized rimfire pattern. Neat!
"How did you come up with this bizarre idea?"

Just think: if semi-autos weren't illegal in pretty much every African country, this would never have been invented. Necessity, mother, etc.
@Blake Ubersox Oh, I see. But Alaskan bear hunters and guides don't care about reliability, which is why they DO use autoloaders and lever-actions, and those guns are illegal in Africa because they're not reliable enough, so the governments outlawed them for the hunters' own safety? And the various, expensive, "assisted straight-pull" bolt guns are also much more reliable than autoloaders, and not just a way to get around the laws? And when every article about big game rifles for Africa says "semi-auto and lever-action rifles are illegal" before explaining why people use bolt-action or double-barrels, it's not actually relevant to the article? Got it.
You know that bolt-actions are used WAY more often than doubles in Africa, right?
A better argument would have been "those guns aren't chambered for powerful enough cartridges." It still would have been wrong, though.
That is a real motivation!
@@Bacteriophagebs Got him with both barrels.

Same. It's one of those "it's easy to stand an egg on its end once someone shows you how" sort of situations.
I thought the same thing until he said "how do you rotate two bolts?" Naturally, this being this guy, it had to be the coolest answer possible: "well, you dont".
I was thinking the same thing, and wondering how reliable it would even be with such clock work.
I love how simple the action is, seeing the title I though there had to be some complex mechanism to cycle both bolts.

Yosef Szecsei strikes me as the kind of man who leaves nothing to chance but his own design.
If he'd nearly frozen to death, he probably would've built a fully automatic nuclear reactor to fight it.
Reminds me of the total opposite approach Britain used once, interestingly just used chickens to keep their nuclear landmines warm, so the mechanisms wouldn't freeze in winter.
If its stupid and it works, its not stupid. The truly stupid one was the one my Grandad had to fly with, called the Violet club. It was so unstable that its centre was filled with ball bearings. To arm the device, a plastic plug was pulled out and the ball bearings allowed to fall out. Once loaded, the ball bearings had to be removed before engines of the bomber could be turned on (or they would destroy the bomb). The bomb was deemed so unstable that if armed and in the air, it was deemed too dangerous to land with it ; even a hard normal landing would detonate it. Once in the air, it had to be used. They were fitted on Valiants at a time when they, due to being flown hard, fast and low (which kills aircraft in next to no time) had major fatigue issues and were literally falling apart from the stress. The B-47 had similar issues (as would any aircraft). The instability of the bomb meant that crews never flew with it- which considering the thing weighed nearly a ton (and unlike conventional bombs, the weight is very concentrated)- drastically changed the handling of the aircraft. So, for a time, our defence was based on a bomb which had to be used if put in the air, on bombers under heavy strain and falling apart, with crews unexperienced on how to handle the bombers under such loads. Aka, how to accidentally nuke Norway.
Well it's just Norway, not a good country like Sweden /s
Was expecting this to be a "meme gun" like the double-barrel 1911 but was pleasantly surprised by it being a very practical, mechanically interesting big-game hunter's rifle. Fantastic weapon.

What does that shoot?” The man, speaking in a southern accent says “.50 bmg, sir.” Then near by, a 5’7 lady in her early 30s beckons him over, holding a strange double barreled bolt action rifle, missing its bolt, and a large L shaped indention in her left pocket, and several huge magazines in the pockets of her cargo pants, clearly sweating in the glorious Nevada heat, saying“That’s not a bolt... THHIIISS IS A BOLT!” Bringing to bear a strange thing out of a oil stained pocket, and disappointing the local “weird boy,” a man who currently is experimenting with his strange prototype of what seems to be a AR10 with an AK-107 recoil counterbalance system.

Callum Turner fair enough, I’m just saying they’re meant to be to things completely. I think the main issue with the set up of a semi-automatic high caliber rifle from what I understand is a shooters preference, some people just don’t like the movement of the action when they’re making follow-up shots. I’ve heard some people say they it has to do with the consistency of the bolt action over semi-auto in that the bolt will always hit the same place. Again I have no clue as to rather or not that’s true but that’s what I’ve always heard.

-After being trampled by an elephant.
Afnan Zahran or you could just briskly walk away. Elephants run at about 12-14MPH. Humans can easily achieve 18-22MPH and do so for hours, but the elephants will tire after minutes.
The "easily achieve 18-22 MPH" is dubious - that's sprinting for mere mortals - and the "can do so for hours" is completely absurd. Unless you actually train as a runner, you cannot continuously run at your *average* run speed for hours. Let's say for the sake of argument that Szecsei has a nice even savanna to run away on - not trapped in a bush surrounded by marshy grass. I will grant you, if he kept his head and didn't just sprint wildly like you know, a frightened person, he could probably keep his distance long enough for the elephants to tire and give up. That is only because they are enormous creatures that take equally enormous energy to move and thus cannot keep up their aggressive chase for a very long time. Again, assuming he kept a cool head and didn't trip trying to save his life in the most expedient way possible, it's feasible he could get away unscathed, assuming he had the forethought to not trap himself with the terrain, flora, other dangerous creatures, etc. Feasible =/= easy.
Sure but the fastest recorded man was 29.5mph vs fastest recorded African elephant was 15.5 close to half. If you are unfit and playing with monsters you are either insane or backed up with some help. Honestly I have walked among elephants on a high fence preserve and they surely look like they are fast but really you can out walk them if you pay attention and keep your head. A light jog for 100 yards or so should do it. If you can’t manage that then may Darwin take you if you are dumb enough to approach. (I also learned Hippos can frigg’n run, at speeds approaching Olympic 800m sprinters). We stayed away from them even though my guide was authorized to show us to them and take up boating. He had earlier lost a fellow guid and two clients less then a month before.
It’s not about tiring, it’s about overheating. Humans in reasonable fitness can travel at 4-6mph over uneven terrain for 20hrs straight if property motivated. An elephant will need to stop and cool down in less the 4hrs. This is how our ancestors hunted everything. We are physically superior in this way to almost all mammals, especially if you carry a waterskin. Further I have never heard of elephants climbing mountains or scurrying up a steep slope so there’s that and additionally unless it’s a single bull without a babies and other elephants in its group it will no pursue very far so all points are moot. And if it is a single bull, it will give up and abandon its anger quite quickly because you aren’t that important to it and it’s actually quite a smart animal and will see the pointlessness of chasing a dumb human for more then a few minutes.

i now right? are the barrels offset diagonally? is one barrel placed a little farther forward than the other? does the magazine feed from the side?
Maybe as the bolt assembly rotates when the bolt is open. So, when you rotate the bolt, the entire assembly goes from vertical, to horizontal, picks up the rounds, then returns to under over, and chambers them.

Secsi & fuchs in one name, it has to be intentional 😎
Dammit Dad, get off UA-cam!
Lili Why it sounds funnier that way.
I was waiting for someone to say it's Secsi as Fuch. I just took one for the team.
Alan Quatermain gun, but with follow-up shots. Needs a "both" trigger, though.
For when you need to shoot through the charging rhino and kill the monsterous pagan demigod behind it.
That is accomplished by putting your finger all the way through and just janking it home. Szecsei and Fuchs are not responsible for any permanent damage caused to your shoulder.
Well, some gun laws would then make that out to be a an "automatic weapon"
You *could* place a steel block between the triggers, and don't tell anyone you did.
This would work for really any double barreled firearm with separate triggers, but then you are immediately in constructive possession of an automatic firearm.
Ian Lehman Eh, not quite. Two triggers, under US law, equals two trigger pulls (which is weird, but hey) - hence, legal.
Apparently, any modification that links two triggers together, such as a block or, other means that will require you to pull one trigger for both rounds, which the law then considers as one trigger pull still falls under an automatic firearm. It's the wrong way to interpret what an automatic firearm is, really.
An absolutely stunning rifle! A Rolls Royce of hunting rifles, you can hear the quality when Ian worked the action. Sounds like velvet.
*The correct pronounciation for Szecsei:*
"Sz"=like "s" from sight,
"e" = like "e" from less
"cs" = like "ch" from "chain"
"i" = like the "i" from "thin"
So is it roughly pronounced as "Seh-chi"?
More like "Seh-che-ee".
Ah ok, thanks.
This rifle, however, is pronounced "Sexy".
Seccsi fuccs
If you had trouble finding the auction:
Current bid is at $14,000 and expected to fetch between $27,500 - $37,500 🤯
Heart broken
Not too much for an Austrian boutique-gun.
Still around 13.000 more than i can afford .😅
Not quite as much as I had figured.
$12K to $24K is the normal ball park for custom made African drilling rifles most of which are tame compared to this mechanical beast! The prices are stupid high even old Mauser Actions pimped out by these sorts of custom African rifle makers go for crazy high prices.
What a finish though, right down to the machining on the cross material parts. Everything looks so well built.
Just the double bolts are a work of art.
I want me one of those Szecsei Fuchin' rifles!
Absolutely beautifully done. Incredible idea. Love your work, Ian.
I Knew nothing about this before. God bless all here.
It's so pretty i didn't even notice the FG-42 until the end of the video.
Yes you did
When I was a kid, I found an old 1976 "Shooter's Bible," which is/was basically a giant catalog for various firearms and accessories. There was a full-page ad for one of these double-barrel bolt actions, with no price listed. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Many years later, I happened across one in an antique store, also with no price tag. I asked how much for it, and the dealer said, "You can't afford it, kid." (I was 20, so fair enough.) Then, in 2009, that year's Shooter's Bible hilariously listed them for $499, which everyone assumed was a typo for $49,900 or something, and is still the best guess at a price I've ever seen for one of these new.
Holy cow! That is some amazing engineering...
"Szecsei" & "Fuchs" AKA what you say when the tiger starts running towards you
For when you want to kill that overgrown cat running at you and the chop the trees behind it in two.
😁 you have never had a tiger charge at you. They're fast; this is too heavy.
Underrated comment
@@dscrappygolani7981 I don’t think you need to run if your carrying this thing
if i were a tiger, and i saw a guy with this thing in his hands, i'd run- away!
Thanks!
I don't even need to follow the link to know this is going to be an expensive gun. Kind of reminds me of the car Homer designs in The Simpsons and the guy at the unveiling asking "What does this monstrosity cost?"
Although if I had unlimited money then I'd probably pick one up. I mean who knows when I might be charged by 3 elephants.
sternonisoil theoretically you could be charged by up to 8 with this...
It doesn't need to be expensive, though, as the action is mechanically simple.
+Serdiuk Paul
Maybe, depends on what the tooling costs or if they are custom made and there is no tooling to mass produce those fine rifles. Then again, I do not know what such a rifle would cost to manufacture if you just went to a competent gunsmith with the drawings and asked that person to manufacture the rifle.
Estimated sale price is $27,500 and counting....
The greatest expense is aligning the barrels to shoot to the same spot. While computer controlled machines can make the action, aligning the barrels will require hours of work by a skilled (expensive) gunsmith.
THAT IS THE COOLEST GUN i HAVE SEEN IN A LONG TIME.
That bolt assembly is a stroke of genius.
What an amazing gun, and pretty too! I´ve never seen this clever solution. Love quick followups for big game, would be awesome to find this in 30-06.
The bolt itself is gorgeous.
Never thought I'd say that about a bolt.
The mars corporation were not happy with your comments.. You were reported to the empire.. Expect space wolves at your door soon
that's not a double barrel receiver it's a double barrel MIRROR DEAR GOD THAT POLISH 😍
also I feel there's not enough love for the fluer that's been carved into the checkered grip.
I am more excited about that Fg42 in the background.
Martin Max YES
What a job this man has!
Oh is that what that is?? Looks like a starwars blaster from this angle
@@michaltaft2972 I want that job.
@@Kvasir-thewise1 I didn't even notice that the first time!
I was charged by three rampaging squirrels and my ruger 10/22 jammed I knew I’d need something better in the future.
It's time, we need, the DP12
I seen alot of things that would blow someone's mind... but a double barrel bolt action rifle is definitely something I haven't seen or thought would exist
Beautiful gun. What a concept, and absolutely gorgeous craftsmanship. Love your videos!
Quite elegant proof that overkill is underrated 👌
Szecsei & Fuchs what a name. Want one of these
Absolutely GORGEOUS!! I don’t know which would be more painful, the recoil or the price😬🤣
You've done it again, Ian. Interesting and informative. I also would prefer a. 22LR.
Ha! Finally a review on a Fuchs rifle! Greets from Innsbruck. Mr. Fuchs is an amazing gunsmith!
Not to mention the scope. I bet that is an expensive scope
For sure
Anything with the word Swarovski is expensive lol
Not that ne needs scopes for hunting charging elephants. But can one zero a rifle with two barrels?
@@williamsager805 that's what makes double rifles expensive. making the barrels shoot bullets that make holes reasonably close to each other take a lot of time and effort.
It's an older Swarovski, they arent that expensive.
Love those piece of art European high quality hunting rifles...
this is such a good (and in this case, extremely well-executed) idea that im surprised we dont see this more often
Would’ve loved to see this with front locking lugs and a gearbox in the back that turns them opposite directions.
"This is a feature that you don't see anywhere else"
DP-12: Am I a joke to you?
Pump bolt same difference
Unless I'm thinking of the wrong shotgun the DP-12 has 2 triggers side be side. This rifle has sequential triggers.
Well I appreciate your joke.ty
Similar result, very different application.
This is sooo cool!...I'm from Zimbabwe & have done my share of buffalo hunting & normally use a 470 double but that gives you 2 shots in quick succession, with this beast you could let off a bunch without stopping to reload. Not the biggest fan of the push feed bolt instead of controlled feed, those little sprung loaded ejectors are prone to having issues in our dusty conditions although those big extractors look like they'd be fine with a sticky case in our summer heat.
It's great if something ends up interfering with the hunt. Like, say, another buffalo. Or an elephant. Or, worse, someone out to hurt you.
Hold on, did he almost pronounce the Hungarian name right? he got both the sz and the cs correct, only the 'i' at the end was incorrect. Very well done Ian!
He really tries to get pronunciations correct.
I'm wondering if 3D printed dummy cartidges would be feasible to demonstrate the working principle of some of the rather unusual guns.
And in case anyone has been wondering about the over-under variant of this rifle. It looks like they just rotated the whole thing by 90°.
