One thing I consider to be an important consideration to building an Apple ecosystem is to build up from a starting point, don't try and buy everything at once. I mean, if you got the cash, sure, go ahead, but most of us don't, so I think it's best to build from a starting point and spread out from there, going cheap (ie used) where you can to save money.
For example, right now I have an Apple Watch, an iPhone, and iPad and some airpods. What I lack is a Mac. I had been using my work MacBook Pro for both work and personal use for years but this last month I changed jobs and lost it. I have a new work MacBook, but it's much more locked down than my last one, so it really is only for work. I'm in the market for a Mac and I'm seriously considering going with the suggestion in this video to go with an iMac, going desktop for the first time in years.

I've recently upgraded a few weeks to a barely used but spanking new 2017 iMac 4.2Ghz i7 Quad 27inch 5K for only $800 in pristine condition on Facebook Marketplace. I upgraded from a 2012 Mac Pro 5,1 6-Core. It is night and day in comparison. Even the macOS and apps behave DIFFERENTLY. Just blown away by the whole thing. Finally getting settled down on this iMac cause I have to upgrade my software and apps that I have on the 2012 Mac Pro 5,1. I've been spending time learning the ins and outs of the macOS Big Sur before the next one comes out in the next few weeks or so. Just amazing. This video is on point. Yes to a video talking about Apple's OS to hardware support history and how to possibly extend it on older macs. For years (since I bought my first Mac, an SE) what prompted my need to upgrade was driven by the applications I was using to create with rather than the Mac OS. If, for example, a new version of ArchiCAD would not run on my current system I would upgrade. Concern for security has changed that in recent years, and updating the OS has prompted the need to update hardware before updating my daily driver apps. Anyway when and why using Apple supported systems is interesting and critical to the discussion of used Macs. Keep it coming.

I’ve been using the iPad 8, iPhone SE 2 & Apple Watch SE since October last year and love it. £1,027 RRP with the only “upgrade” being the watch case size (44mm).
It’s worked extremely well for me. Aside from the older design, I’d say the two biggest trade offs have been iPhone battery and iPad speakers.
That said, for my next upgrade cycle I’ll be going for the other end of the spectrum: iPhone Pro, iPad Pro, Apple Watch ‘Series’. I’m still holding out for that larger iMac.
I’ve refused to buy a new computer since WWDC 2020 as a result.

  • @eyekosaeder5387

Personally, I’ve been basically always using just an iPad.
    1) it gets all the school and now uni work done (taking notes, writing documents, etc.) probably equally as good or even better than a macbook could.
    2) it has enough power and apps to do quite decent photo editing (it might not suit actual professional needs though)
and most importantly: 3) as someone who is into digital painting, the iPad (in combination with procreate and the apple pencil, of course) is the most amazing thing out there. IMO, Nothing beats the relative simplicity it has while maintaining a lot of the features of desktop drawing programs (photoshop etc.).
Finally, the fact that it is on top of all that basically one of the best devices for media consumption has made it the only device I use (apart from my phone).
Now, I am planning on buying a mac mini or perhaps an iMac, but for me that would be the accessory, honestly.

    • @HypraNT

In your first fact, what do you mean by "even better than a macbook could". How could it be better at writing documents?

    • @eyekosaeder5387
      @eyekosaeder5387 3 роки тому

@@HypraNT the “better than a macbook could” primarily meant the taking notes part because you can write notes by hand, which allows for more flexibility.
Also, I would say that an iPad generally allows for more flexibility even in writing documents since you aren’t limited to a certain orientation of the screen or to the one keyboard you get with a macbook, especially if you frequently use another language than your native language…
(Of course you’d have to use the on screen keyboard in those cases which isn’t ideal, but it is still better than nothing, imo)

N.B.- even after the iphones or iPads get dropped from the latest iOS or iPadOS release, some are still getting security updates for whatever iPadOS that they maxed out on…. So a used iPad for 500 USD might get 5 years of new ipadOSes and then after that, a year-or a few more years-of security updates. iPadOS 12 and iOS 12 are still getting security updates, and they go back for devices even farther than iOS13/14….That’s super great value! Standard 10 years of updates for all newly released Apple products would be a dream come true. (2012 MBP somehow magically got this!! 🥰)

Honestly, - iPad (except if you want the pen input which is incredible) and instead of the imac use a m1 macbook air or pro with a docking station and external screen. Like a 5120x1440 ultrawide with a built in thunderbolt dock (around 800$). This way you dont have to switch devices, you pay around the same considering you would otherwise get the 500$ ipad and the imac.
This way you get your nice desktop experience without having to rely on cloud transfers and you will get a better overall working experience on the mac.
Personally my prefered productivity solution even though i daily drive my "older" 16" macbook pro and own 2018 ipad pro

I pretty much agree. The only change I would make is getting a little more storage on the iMac, which gets you more storage of course, as well as Touch ID, and two thunderbolt ports on the back, to go with the two USB-C ports that the base model has. You could offset that cost by going with a regular iPhone 11 if you don’t need that extra camera.
I’ve said it before, and you said it for me in your video, that with a desktop Mac at home and an iPad on the go, you don’t need a MacBook. The iPad is more portable than a laptop, does 90% of what you need it to for most people, and the MacOS stuff can almost always wait until you get back to your office setup.

If you’re really searching for the intersection between value & an “ideal” apple ecosystem, all u really need is one iphone + one macbook for both home & the road.
You can choose which exact model of iphone/macbook based on what type of work you do.
Literally, that’s it. For every other part of the ecosystem there are MUCH cheaper quality alternatives, with almost on par or in many cases even better functionality.
Economical, Efficient & Effective - sounds ideal indeed to me :)

With the coming updates there is an extra argument for the macOS iPad combo, the sync looks absolutely amazing. If you do need PC Programs at all times my setup would probably be: MacBook, iPhone, iPad Air (no keyboard). The way iPad will work with macs with the coming updates will be very cool.
Barely used iPad Pro (refurb or just used) is a fantastic deal. Get the Folio Touch from Logitech as a keyboard (just be warned that usb compatibility is terrible) instead of Apples options if value is a concern (which it probably is if you bought a used one).
Still running my 2018 Pro and it’s still way too fast, only problem is the battery which is down to maybe 6 hours if screen on, annoying that it’s decreased that much in just 1.5 years, but still ok.

So far, my Ecosystem is just 2 devices. The M1 Mac Mini (Purchased in January) and 11" M1 iPad Pro. (Purchased last month) I'm converting from Windows.
Y'all please don't hate, but I still can't see myself switching to iPhone anytime soon, which is a bummer in a way because I really like the Apple Watch. my current phone is the OnePlus 7Pro Nebula Blue. It has a 90hz Super AMOLED display with no camera taking up screen real estate, 12Gigs of Ram and 256 Gigs of storage. Still runs like new 2+ years later.

Maybe I am wrong but I am the first to unfold this idea: the current ipad pro line will be a blueprint for the upcoming MacBook Pro line. Yes, the silicon, as in the ipad pro’s case, will be the same with some upgradability options like RAM or GPU Cores, BUT the major difference of the 16 inch will be the Mini LED display while the14 inch will stay with the IPS one. This difference make sense in terms of pricing of both products. The smaller one will be at cost of today’s intel, i.e. 1799$ while the larger of a bit higher price than the current 16 inch (as it was in case of the 12inch ipad pro). And don’t thank me 🤗

For me, Lockdown changed how I work. I have a Mini I use as a desktop with a 4K 27" display, and a MacBook Air for when I want to work in other places around the house for a change of scene. or even for trips into the "Office" in the city. I'm not a creative professional, Im an IT guy. For work, I have to have VPN clients, VMware Horizon Client, Parallels, MS Remote Desktop, Office 385, Teams, SSH terminals, SFTP clients. I CANNOT use an iPad for work. However, it is a perfect personal portable device, but there is a LOT of crossover with my iPhone and the iPad. So when I go on holiday, the iPad is the device I take.

I agree with the premise, mostly. I have an iPad 11” 2018, an iPhone SE2 and the Apple Watch (because I am older and daily exercise is important to me). To be honest, i don’t feel like I sold both the MacBook Pro and the Mac mini and I don’t miss them. I think these reviews are skewed toward youtubers who don’t need to edit videos and the lots of jobs could be done with iOS as the main driver.

Not only that but the NEW Macs and Apple devices are more energy efficient. I think that is a MAJOR reason why I would choose the NEWER devices over old Apple devices. It adds up to about $80 more per year in electrical charges for all those types of devices. And the fact that having built-in batteries is like having a APC-PSU backup battery.

The only thing I really “need” the Mac Mini 4 is to rip DVDs and edit Apple Music Smart Playlists. That’s it. But those are important to me hence the need. I have considered selling the Mini and iPad and getting a MacBook air, because technically it can do all of the above. But - I would miss the touch screen, the Apple Pencil and the ability to read magazines, etc. on the iPad.

Worth looking into a M1 iPad. I couldn’t get a straight answer so took a gamble and the M1 works perfectly with the Thunderbolt Display. If you get magic keyboard can charge it too. So you can link MacBook via the inbuilt thunderbolt and iPad to the spare one using a thunderbolt cable and switch between. This is very good as ipad doesn’t let you switch audio to ipad if linked to a monitor.

When the new iPad mini is a little older and you can find them on eBay for really fair prices, I think it’ll be king for people looking to have something to do light work alongside their laptops and computers. It’s great as an Ereader and a little sketchbook to carry alongside a laptop for full computer software support. Personally an iPad can’t replace a laptop for me as I am too used to having full office support and support for my cad software etc. Together though it’s a match made in Heaven for me.

Thanks, but no, thanks. I don't think that the iPad as mobile device is the right solution. Yes you maybe get longer updates, but in the end you will spend 500 $ on a device that after the support ends, is virtually unuseful. The Macbook on the contrary, in the worst scenario, can become a Linux laptop and still serve its purpose as computer... not in the ecosystem ok, but way more useful than an insecure, non updated iPad. And we are not considering that if you are a power user, you need a real desktop OS on the go.

Luke I love your videos and I usually agree with what you say but I don’t agree very much with this video. I think instead of getting the new iMac and an iPad your probably better off getting a m1 MacBook Air (there almost always on sale for about 850 dollars) and with the MacBook Air you can take it whenever you go anywhere and when you get home you can get a pretty good setup of a monitor mouse and keyboard for about 150-200 dollars. And just use that when you get home and you’ll end up saving at least 500-600 dollars. About the iPhone I agree with you about the iPhone 11 Pro. I think it’s a great value phone but I do think its worth waiting a couple months because I guarantee the iPhone‘s prices will get even cheaper and you might even be able to get for the same price as a refurbished iPhone 12. But overall great video. Thanks 😀

  • @bartonlynch
    @bartonlynch 3 роки тому +1

Nah, the best value would be to get a Mac mini M1 which is 600$ less than the base M1 iMac and you end up with more ports. The saved 600$ can be used towards a really good 4K 24" display (an LG for 250-300$ at Amazon) a Apple Magic Keyboard/Mouse combo (200$) and the remaining 100$ on a webcam/mic (if you need it for remote work). Also, get a new iPhone 11 (not Pro) por 599$, which you'll miss nothing from the Pro version other than an extra camera, and if you really want to skimp further, a XR for 499$, brand new, it's still a premium iPhone BUT will downgrade the camera system significantly compared to the 11 if you don't mind. Keep the iPad Pro 2018, no problems there. I beat ya Luke. :-B
