With all these very unusually warm Winters that we been having it looks like the polar vortex is about to explode and give us very unusually record breaking very bitter cold temperatures. Just maybe the way it is looking.
There has been Polar vortex events two out of the last four winters in the U.S. Those events take forever to get here and leave in less than a week in most places. It being mild the rest of the winter nullifies it's effects though and also makes it's memory fade.
In 2021 we got down to 3 degrees in central Louisiana, 0 degrees in mid December 2022 with very high winds, and 6 degrees early this year. We don`t usually get such cold temperatures. It keeps ruining fruit trees and fall/winter gardens. You can`t grow zone 8 fruit trees or berries here anymore. I guess I need some Canadian varieties.
Things are wonky even wayyy up here in western Canada zone 3. About eight years ago, we had been bumped up to zone 4 and I would agree with that, for my shrubs, raspberries and fruit trees had been wintering reliably better than I have ever experienced! Then, in just the last few years, several extreme events and January '24 seeing my region having the most brutal cold in 40 years to zone 2 b temperatures, really is difficult on the plants in what is a challenging climate to begin with, my apple and plum trees were a mess of half dead branches this spring!
I have been screaming this for the past 8 years. I live in 7b. I have not had good fall color for my Japanese maples due to the arctic blasts so early in fall. And not to mention the early spring freezes that kill the early flush. I am so over it. You say to grow Canadian varieties but the issue is the heat. It’s just become too extreme! Sad!
We already got 46 inches of snow this winter ...I live east of Cleveland Ohio about 35 minutes and we got 46 inches of lake effect snow in 3 days ...lol and that's almost half of out yearly snowfall
I really really hope you are right with all this cold weather potential in January I live in Northeast Ohio in the last four Winters have been non-existent it would be great to have another winter like 2013 2014
Last year I think it was, I had the coldest day out of the 12yrs I have lived in North Carolina. It had been about 9*F, honestly I wonder if this year it’s gonna beat that temperature? Also sucks to hear with snow. Honestly for the last few years every day it rains it suddenly gets warmer and then when it stops the weather is like”oh! Time to be 32*F again!” Lol
I seems like we're in more of a Neutral pattern rather than a Weak la Nina currently. Hopefully that holds through Winter for us cold and snow lovers. Your thoughts?
Thanks for the forecast I hope it verifies. I want some weather! I think the forecast is hinging on the MJO moving out though, and if does I think a lot of what you said will play out. The thing is though is there are several published papers that show how often the MJO fails to reach the Pacific Ocean (Phase 7-8) especially during a La Niña. ECMWF ens, ext, BOMM, eps and normal model run's aren't taking it into phase 8 as they die out if they even get into phase 7 and collapse into nullspace. Given the forecast as more easterlies across the pac and westerlies off of africa, it makes sense that the MJO live in phase 4/5/6. The only way the MJO could get out is at the expense of a weakened La Nina and that doesn't make a lot of sense right now, although potentially later.
...btw...the little window in which you are talking is covering up the color chart. Is there any way you could adjust this, so we can see the color chart and assess the temperatures in our specific area?
You sound very knowledgeable, but today is the first day I have listened to your work. Do you have any comments on what neiledmiston said below? This is just horrible confusing to me as a novice in the area. Thank you very much in advance.
With all the warmth I see in Montana for your forecast period, it's hard take stock in the snow forecast map. In general, it's inaccurate even 4 days out, with the warmth predicted my trust meter hits near zero.
So basically you are like everyone else and have no idea what is going to happen seems to be cold for a bit then warm back up and rain .would like some good snow storms in Ohio this winter.

I doubt it. those 2014 winters only happen once every 20 to 25 years

Not one flake of snow in Central Nebraska. Horrendous pattern.
Winter always seems to wait until January to really take action here in Arkansas. Some years even lasts into February/March

2014 was the last good winter in Ohio .
What about Spring 2025??? can we expect rain in Austin and Dallas or we can expect more drought??
This SUCKS! I want snow so much!

Exactly. The forecast models bias towards its sweeping around when in actuality it doesn’t during La Nina’s
