This video was most inspirational. The project was out of my comfort zone, but my wife wanted it, so...Our fireplace is irregular stone, not brick. That makes troweling it on a big waste of time. What worked best for us was scooping it up in our hands (gloves) and smacking it into the grout lines then spreading it to the rocks after that. I used my fingers as a paint brush and palms more like the trowel to wipe away the "brush strokes" left by my fingers. With two of us working it took about 5 hours for schmearing, brushing and sponging. I used a hand held garden fork to mix the mortar. You don't need the drill. It took 2 minutes. Then let the stuff sit for 10 minutes so it all absorbs the water evenly and then apply.
Out of 5 videos I've watched in my tutorial on the German schmear, I like your style the best! I'm going to add a wire brush to my dry finish for a little more abrasion. Then water base polycrylic over that. Thanks!
looks great I am trying this on my brick wall on the back deck next week. I do not have a drill to mix it with though so can I just mix the mortar by hand?
Thanks for sharing! I'm thinking about trying this on my kitchen back splash and/or my fireplace. I first saw and heard of this technique on Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines. Looks like a great way to update your space and decor on a budget. Great job and kuddos for being a do-it-yourselfer! Sorry you have to put up with comments that have nothing to do with your teaching skills. I would delete those from your trail if you can. They are worthless to those who are looking for reviews to learn from.
I worked in 2x2ft area. I used a grout bag. First horizontally and then vertical in the grout lines. So much faster using premixed. Just make it icing consistency w water,, then go back scrape it horizontally, wipe off scraper, then scrape in X pattern. Dont need all that wet/sponge work. Or you could skip that and paint it. I pained some bricks diff colors like tan, black, crimson to make it pop. All my bricks were same color.
I know this is an old video, but if anyone is so inclined to respond. I'm looking to do this to my fireplace, however I cannot stand the base color of the stones around the fireplace (they are sooo 90's Lol). My question is, can I just first fully paint the stones in a black paint, let that dry then follow up with your technique to give it more of a distressed (battle worn) look? Thanks, that looks great!
Nice tutorial, idd reccomend saturating the brick an mortar first. Then adding a half cup more of water to the bucket. But I have only ever dune this outside.
Love the outcome of the fireplace. before doing the German Schmear might have used some trisodium Phosphate on the inside of the fireplace which would have really cleaned it up with a wet then shop vac. But, certainly I am trying to add to your beautiful masterpiece and not say something negative. Kindly stated!
Hey there! What mortar mix brand did you use? Was it S or N, and was it a thin set? I am having trouble figuring out what to use on the exterior of my house. Thanks!
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing. Can this schmearing technique be used over painted cinderblock walls? We just bought a new home that was built in the 70s by a brick mason for his family, and the exterior as well as some flooring and many interior walls are brick. Additionally, the seven rooms in the basement are framed out with cinderblock (the place is a fortress). I would love to schmear them. What are your thoughts?
Hi! That's exciting! I would use it to create texture where needed on the brick or to remove some of the access wash when it dries. You scrape it to reveal more of the brick if that is the look you are going for. :) Good luck!
It's used for when you have too much mortar and you want to reveal more brick. Once the mortar is dried you can brush some of it away to give more texture too.
Hi, Anya! Do you know if I would able to do this to an (already painted) brick fireplace? The people who lived in the house before us used regular housepaint on the brick and it looks awful!
Hey Jessica! I think if it's painted you still should be able to do it- just might not get that original brick peeking through the way you do with the schmear. As long as it's a water based paint the mortar should still stick to it.
Mar Ke, because many people don't like the color of their brick. I'm always amazed that people are bothered by what other people do with their homes. It's the same with food. Steaks and how they're cooked is an example.
It's in the link to the site- but since you missed. Here it is for you! www.sippycupsandrose.com/diy-instructional-video-german-schmear-brick-fireplace/
I like your chevron dining floor! And fireplace looks great.

This is the best method I’ve seen so far. Thank you!
Great video! I had super old brick and my living room feels so much brighter now.

Thanks for the video, I’ve been wanting to do this to my fireplace too 😉👍

How did this turn out with the water base polycrylic, feel like that might just be the final touch im looking for with this project.
Would've been nice to see the end result instead of ending the video before showing how it looks done up..

Go for it! It makes such a difference! Also, an inexpensive way to update the space. Good luck!
Anya Monzikova is awesome.

It came out really good but you did it over real brick. How can you change it when you redecorate?
Thank you. I’m going to do my fire place.
Nice tutorial, idd reccomend saturating the brick an mortar first. Then adding a half cup more of water to the bucket. But I have only ever dune this outside.
We did this on our brick outside the home too and I found that if the mixture is too watery it runs off on the spaces/ gaps between the bricks.
I have no idea what this is but whatever you're doing I want to do the same thing
Really excellent job
Very nice Anya! Will you post the finished fireplace video soon?
It's in the link for the blog at the top ;)
@@TheFrittsFamilyFIX It looks great! Amazing work Anya!
@@SECRETDESIGNRENO THANK YOU!!
@@TheFrittsFamilyFIX I can't get the link to work, but I'd love to see the final result!
@@DaleUnruhJr I am currently reworking my website... It should be up in a week!
This works best if your brick is not rough (pitted) and grout lines are not deep. My brick was very rough and grout lines 1/4" deep.
Great video thank you!

what ratio did you use (water:mortar) for this mix?
Its a Monzimakover. And its a yes from me.
Hey there! What mortar mix brand did you use? Was it S or N, and was it a thin set? I am having trouble figuring out what to use on the exterior of my house. Thanks!
sorry for the late reply! But we used the versabond white thinset mortar from Home Depot
Which product mortar did u use?
Very nice! I hope to do this technique in my own home.
You should try it out! ;)
omg your a great actor, you were great on S.W.A.T
THANK YOU!!! :D

Other videos state you cannot schmear over paint. It will not adhere properly and quickly erode off.
Love your work
Thank you so much!
Great video! I am going to try on an ugly red/brown brick fireplace. Can you share how you use the wire brush?
Hi! That's exciting! I would use it to create texture where needed on the brick or to remove some of the access wash when it dries. You scrape it to reveal more of the brick if that is the look you are going for. :) Good luck!
Did you paint or seal after mortar dried?
no need to seal
How do you clean it afterwards? My shmear is turning yellow/brown above the opening from the smoke out of the fireplace
I have a grate that covers mine around the opening... but it hasn't yellowed anywhere. Hmmm... Is your fireplace properly ventilating?
But what is the wire brush used for?
It's used for when you have too much mortar and you want to reveal more brick. Once the mortar is dried you can brush some of it away to give more texture too.
what color did you use? white or gray?
white
Thank you, very good information. Going to take on the project in a house I am flipping.
AWESOME!! Good luck!
You didn't even name the ingredient of dry powder you mixed with water....what the neck what are we smearing
Karen, you can click the link to see all the ingredients ;) But it is a thinnest mortar in white- I used VersaBond and bought it at Home Depot .
Thank you so much I love this idea for a kitchen backsplash behind range!!
@@TheFrittsFamilyFIX thank you

I would paint it similar to a brick color then do the shmear after the paint cures
That isn’t German Schmear.
Anyone know a UK supplier?
Is this white cement ?
Did you put a final product on to seal?
No seal needed!!
Hey Marie! Nope- no need :D
Nope! no need really!
you don't say what kind of mortar ?
I'm from Germany and I like the brick look more.
It's a preference. The brick just didn't go with my style and colors in the home. So, it's an inexpensive way to change it up.
Best german schmear video ive seen so far. what materials did you use?
I used the versabond white thinset mortar from Home Depot
@@TheFrittsFamilyFIX Is the stuff you used heat resistant?
@@Rebecca-England sure is
@@TheFrittsFamilyFIX Thank you so much!
omg your perfect....what camera did you use to do super fast speed
I edited it in iMovie and sped up the frames per second in that section of the video. The camera I used for filming was a Canon 5D. good luck!
Also stunningly gorgeous
Can’t understand WHY so many people want to cover up the beautiful brick.
I'm doing it to faux brick panels from home depot- but like you don't understand why people would do it to nice real brick
Mar Ke, because many people don't like the color of their brick. I'm always amazed that people are bothered by what other people do with their homes. It's the same with food. Steaks and how they're cooked is an example.
why does no one ever zoom out
I want to see the update with the mantel! love it! usually how long did the whole process take??
