    The general rule of thumb for converting CLTC rating to WLTP rating is to multiply the CLTC range by a factor of 0.8. So 520 km in CLTC is about 420 km in WLTP.

  • @ImadShams1
    @ImadShams1 4 місяці тому +22

    Have been driving a dolphine with the 60 kwh battery pack since September, so far 17k km. 270 km combined relaxed driving daily to work takes 60% of the battery (65% in cold days). Make your calculations; mine say its 450 km of range for a nice day.

  • @erhuforever
    @erhuforever 4 місяці тому +11

    Please keep in mind that the CLTC, EPA, NEDC, and WLTP range ratings are attempts at predicting average driving condition. These average driving condition models are pertinent to specific regions. CLTC is the most accurate predictive model of an average Chinese city. EPA is most accurate for an average city in the USA. NEDC is actually not a very good representation of any typical regional city. WLTP is best suited for a typical EU city. All these different rating systems are composed of different mixture of driving cycles made up of different speeds and ranges. Converting the range estimate between these different ratings is not straight forward like converting between the metric and English units. The reason CLTC is adopted in China is because that rating system is indeed more reflective of what an average driver is getting. When talking about the "average" value in a normal distribution, one must understand that it is parameter of that distribution. Only a tiny sliver of the population is getting that exact "average" value. 49.999% of the population is below that "average" while 49.999% of the population is above that "average".

    There is a Blade 2 coming out shortly with a greater pack density, though I'm not certain the timelines match to introduce into this refresh.

    • @erhuforever
      @erhuforever 4 місяці тому +2

      I saw rumors about the Blade 2 on several recent UA-cam posts all in the Chinese language. They are just rumors for now. All of them are saying BYD is adding manganese into their LFP formulation. So the Gen2 Blade batteries will be LMFP instead of LFP. The new improved pack level energy density is rumored to be 180 Wh/kg and the charging speed will be insanely fast. Charging from 20% to 80% is rumored to be down to only 5 minutes, and the low temperature performance will be much improved as well. I hope these rumored Blade 2 stats will be true. The EV world really need this ASAP.

    BYD go LFP for all their blade battery cars. But other Chinese and other brands go with NMC for the higher spec.
    I like the BYD approach.

    I've a similar-sized MG4 with a 61.7 kWh pack, and its claimed WLTP range of 435 km matches my own experience almost perfectly. The CLTC range is know to massively overestimate actual range. So forget CLTC in any evaluation.

  • @ubiratamuniz
    @ubiratamuniz 4 місяці тому +2

    There’s a possible tech explanation for this (you mentioned the smaller bumpers is what actually caught my eye). The Euro-spec version (sold here in BR side by side with the Chinese spec) has the same 200bhp motor as the Atto 3. It uses the bigger bumpers. The base model uses a 95bhp motor and the smaller bumpers (it seems that the bigger motor doesn’t fit into the front end of the car with the smaller bumper). So it seems to me that that “champion edition” is actually a 95bhp Dolphin with a bigger battery and some extra features like induction charging. Being the 95hp model instead of the 200bhp explains the improved range with the same 60.8kwh battery.

  • @tli55w
    @tli55w 4 місяці тому +4

    CLTC has more cycles in urban environments than the European counterpart, due to higher density of urban roads in China. you are likely to get the CLTC range if you 1, avoid highways, 2, get stuck in traffic jams all the time, 3 ,have to drive behind bikes, dont go on intercity trips, common themes of the average Chinese commute.

    • @erhuforever
      @erhuforever 4 місяці тому

      This is exactly my point in the previous post. One shouldn't say meaningless things like one rating exaggerates while another rating is more accurate without proper qualification. All range estimates are accurate to their own test cycle requirements. In the real world, no one drives exactly to the rating's driving cycle requirement. One must know which one of the official rating systems is pertinent to his/her region and then use the appropriate rating system accordingly.

    The latest annual Norwegian Automotive Federation (NAF) cold weather testing was quite a surprise quote “Tesla's main competitor BYD that just became the world's largest EV maker last quarter, also had a participant - the BYD Dolphin - and it lost about 20% of its advertised range compared to the Model 3 Highland's 30%. KIA, NIO, XPeng, BMW, and Lotus EVs did great, only losing 12%-14% of their official range numbers in the tasking winter test with temperatures ranging from -2 to -10 degrees Celsius. The greatest surprise, however, besides the unexpected dethroning of Tesla in the cold weather range test, came from one premium newcomer, the HiPhi Z. This Chinese model, which will soon be available in the European market, turned out to be best prepared for driving in adverse winter weather. Its range dropped just 5.9% from the advertised numbers in ideal conditions, beating the second EV in the ranking two fold.” An interesting result which does beg the question has the competition not only caught Tesla but have some now overtaken it’s technology?

    Watch the telescope video responding to mkbhd. It’s quite common knowledge that different standards test at different conditions and speed, which 100% does show different results. Like you most definitely can drive way further with the speed of 60kmh than in 120kmh due to air resistance.
    It’s really not that hard to find dozens of cars released in both worlds and compare both standards. You can easily find out the conversion rates.

    • @onefiniteplanet
      @onefiniteplanet 4 місяці тому

      Well explained, with the exception that conversion rates are not necessarily accurate, as the ratio between efficiency on different test varies from car to car.

    IF China really is going to make a move into western markets - it will be likely this sort of vehicle ; but didn't Reuters report BYD just announce they were getting rid of their blade batteries because the packs leaked causing fires? This is a cheap version of the Nissan Leaf type car. The fact the Leaf really never was very popular when compared to the much more costly Tesla's you have to question if this sort of vehicle will ever be popular in the west no matter how heavily subsidised.

BYD even now admits their batteries were leaking and catching on fire too much. The Bolt isn't a great hit either; why would the Dolphin be?

    • @james_l4337

      Not LFP blade battery cause leak & fire
      If u watch this channel,
      It is the Pouch battery that's often the cause and BYD unfortunately use those on its Hybrid vehicles.
      Pouch batteries are cheaper but has Not as strong structural support, chemistry also may Not be as safe?? and rare cases can build up gas breaking their containment causing short circuit
      Which is what happen to pouch battery, they expand their size and break, short circuit (rare but can happen)
      It was very stupid and very bad decision & cheap move by BYD top decision maker to have had chosen pouch battery for vehicle use
      I think *notebook uses pouch battery too*
      But the hammering on vehicles on road etc
      Plus bigger size, open to heat weather other elements is the worse decision BYD made

      @@litestuffllc7249 Leaf isn't analogous to dolphin. Dolphin is smaller, more tech, more features, better battery chemistry, more range, active cooling, faster charging, more premium interior. Leaf didn't even have active cooling which caused leaf's battery degradation to be quite bad relative to what we have today and even to it's competition (tesla) at the time. Leaf was an important stepping stone, but it is just that, a stepping stone. It's clear to educated consumer, which is pretty much all consumers at that point in the adoption curve. That the leaf was a poor buy due to degradation. This goes a long way to explain why the leaf failed even after having first movers advantage.

      Yes, need to produce methane or methanol for transport and produce Hydrogen on refuel station site, (China on trial for number years)
      large truck use that directly and covert methane live in truck
      This is on trial for ~3yrs in China and is working for sure.
      It is feasible, much more better then the large heavy battery
      Vehicles are lighter travel further
      Also heavy truck lighter, toll more and same travel further
      Full Battery era is only an intermediary step to transition into hydrogen
      Hydrogen which is methane / methanol supply chain takes time it will happen ~ next decade
      it will happen in China 1st because the only nation that is large enough to drive changes and the will power to enforce them.
      Militray Tanks, military armour vehicles & large vehicles can't take battery with them!
      Ship and plane same, thus this Hydrogen carrier via methane / methanol fuel can work
      In large cargo ship etc
      Therefore civilian vehicles will certainly goes same way, and reducing the need for a Full battery.
      High end cars one day will certainly have a hybrid (solid state lighter) battery with larger methane (hydrogen carrier) tank, their small battery will be used as buffer, start mode & electrical instruments up keep in off mode.
