Have you got your eye on the new Tesla Model Y, but the near two-year wait for it to arrive in the UK is driving you nuts? Well, the Kia e-Niro may be a suitable substitute. The all-electric SUV has a range in excess of 280 miles in top-spec form and, crucially, should cost less than the Tesla when the Model Y’s pricing is adjusted for the UK market.
But ‘cheaper’ doesn’t always mean ‘better’. The Hyundai Kona, for instance, is a brilliant electric car but is let down by an interior that’s just a but too plastic-y. So pour a drink and take a seat while Cam takes you through all the pros and cons of the Kia e-Niro.

I have the Kia e Niro 4 absolutely love it. Talking to friends who have Tesla’s the tech is great but the build quality leaves something to be desired. The Kia’s build quality is really good ours is in pearl white .
I've had my e-Niro "4" spec now for 3 months, and I absolutely love not just the car but the entire electric driving experience. You're quite right in that with the e-Niro range anxiety (or even "range mild concern") goes straight out the window, as it has far more range than I'd typically use in a day, so you simply forget about range and just drive the car! It's also way more efficient than our other electric car, so I typically get about 1p per mile in running costs (when combined with our "agile octopus" electricity tariff). As for cost of ownership, It's costing out MUCH cheaper than running my previous car (a 5-10 year old Volvo V70) as with a PCP contract, the cost relates directly to the resale value, and these cars REALLY hold their value, so you pay much less for the 3 years of ownership. However, to your video title, would I change it for a Model Y? - YES, in an instant! My son-in-law has a Model 3 and the advances in just about every aspect of car design are obvious - most importantly the Supercharger network, which for those making regular long journeys is completely world-beating! Thanks for the interesting review.
Sounds good, what range are you getting please?
@@elbowsyoutub In summer temperatures I was getting about 260 - 280 miles per charge. In the winter (below 10 degrees) it went down to about 230 minimum. This meant that I could completely rely on it doing at least 200 miles per trip (with plenty in hand when I got back), so 100 miles each way. I almost always drive a lot less than that, hence zero range concern! :-)
@@dougonutube Thank you Sir.
Thanks, I love mine. I enjoy the smooth torque delivery, the car is very fast off the line.It will take about 7 years by my estimate to recover the extra cost over an ICE in terms of cost savings, but I did not buy it to save money.
Driving an electric car is a whole new experience, so much better than a petrol or diesel. OK if it helps to save the planet well another bonus.
How many miles do you do? 7 years seems like a long time. I worked out with my mileage, fuel costs etc I would be even in around 4.
Hi. Pretty good review. But having got a 4 spec Kia e Niro I would just like to point out that you say the car has a 60 kw battery when in fact it is 64 kw and the uvo app is free for the first 7years and does a hole lot more than you describe I e you can set and check state of charge and lock and unlock the car as well set the ac.
It's actually 67kwh with 64kwh usable.
Which one should I choose between Kia E niro & MG ZS EV ? Plz suggest me
Cam I must say I loved your review. Its fresh you have a good sense of humour and very honest ...I have subscribed and looking forward to see more reviews 👍
Thanks for subbing! Plenty more on the way - Cam
Picked up a 4+ yesterday in Yacht blue, it is amazing. Totally in love with it. You don't need to press the park button to drive though, just move the console to D. The turning circle is amazing and I love that the steering wheel is so light. Not a fan of it though when you hold the steering wheel trying to get out. I know you say there is a lot of storage, I'm not impressed with the glove box though. It's a pain to open and tiny 🙄
Yes you can store stuff under the bonnet. It won't catch fire, nor get hot.
I keep my charging cables there in one of the trays of the boot.
Seriously??
Martin Switzer yeah I’ve seen this done
@@Alex101087 Thanks for the confirmation. I'll have to remember to try it! Just nervous about insurance...
Martin Switzer no worries.. check this out: www.speakev.com/threads/kia-e-niro-tweeks.148867/
Nice lively and balanced review, if not particularly full, Cam (great name for a car reviewer, and highly ironic in the case of an EV). The 4+ also has an electric sunroof, and the Krell sound system, which I think is across the range, is really special.
I'm picking up mine next Friday! In the same colour so thanks for the review. Ordered in February. One point to note, I don't think it's the 4+, the 4+ has vented seats, the 4 which I am getting does not. It does have heated seats though.
I now have the car and I have to say it is my favourite car to date. Lovely to drive and very comfrotable. Going from ICE manual cars to this has been a learning experince, but I look forward to each trip I can take in it. Loving charging at home too. Highly recomend this car. Ordered in February 2020, recieved September 2020.
Great review, I have just put my order in for a ENero 3. The colour gravity blue is now replaced with yacht blue which is lighter and more metallic in appearance.
I thought about the three but the extras on the 4+ I thought was worth the extra cost! The one that I thought was most important was the heat pump. Like you ive opted for the yacht blue, it’s a lovely colour. Have you been given an estimated delivery date.
@@wobby1516 at the moment it's the 21st march 2021 but others in our company's have had dates updated to sooner. Being a company car I didn't have the option for the 4 😤
@@drewster I have the option for the 4+, but not the colour option - cos my company can't afford to have me pay £11 more pcm. So, 3 in yacht blue, or 4+ in [boring] silver?? I'll probably still go for the 4+ for the ventilated seats, metal pedals & heat pump
@@drewster Wow. I ordered mine on friday. It's arriving in Norway on the 8th of october! Wonder why you have to wait for so long.
I could still choose Gravity Blue, which I did.
Damn - I wanted gravity blue. The yacht blue looks garishly awful by comparison
Good shots mate. Loved the scenery.
Am getting delivery for my niro 4 next week in pearl white looking forward to it
You left out one if not the most important upgrades on the 4+. and that is a heat pump.
And a sunroof 🌞
@Colin Munro I'm considering getting this car but am undecided between the '3' and '4+' . The only reason I'm even considering a 4+ is because of the heat pump. Do you think it's worth it? Any idea how many extra miles you can get from the heat pump?
great review, but you were driving a "4", and the "4+" which has replaced it doesn't come in Gravity Blue, but the replacement colour, Yacht Blue looks gorgeous!
Another great video Cam! Just noticed your subscriber count growing nicely, your talent is being recognised :)
Had a Gravity Blue on order but Kia has now ceased the colour. Why I do not know.
Good review, thanks for your time to make it. Great video shots at 9'32'' !!
Great review, I'm really trying to decide between this and model 3 or soon to see model 2 /cheers scrapbongo
Thanks! Stick around, we've got a Model 3 review in the works... - Cam
@@YesAutoUK thanks Cam
I was thinking to get the Niro until I read so many complaints about the bearing issue.
nice video, but where is the comparison with the model y? I think there is a small error in your info though; you stated that only the most expensive model has 3 phase charging, i believe all trims have that though.
I’ve got a MY2020 model and what it unfortunately does not do is smart route planning along DC chargers. And that’s a real pitty....
Honestly it’s not bad I like it better than the Hyundai and this car looks spacious I mean this car is far better looking and spacious than the Nissan Leaf or the Chevy bolt and is far more attractive in appearance I didn’t cate for the center steering wheel looked cheap that roundness ages the interior I do wish the roof was panoramic or at least a sun roof but ehh it’s a want not a need I wonder how visibility is at night are the lights hid or led or plain ol halogen and is there upgrades if it is halogen because it hat yellow cast ages the car and gives poor visibility
Please please lose the nauseating music! Why do so many you tubers ruin otherwise good reports with unnecessary crap music playing. It makes it unwatchable. Also, why do you continuously refer to the 2021 2, 3 and 4 plus when the car you are reviewing is actually the 2020 model 4?
After owning a model y for a week... We just placed an order for another y. Its that good.
Can't wait for them to come to the UK, just a shame we have to wait so long! - Cam
Please stop the annoying background music. Spoilt the review for me.
Nice vid but that noise did my head in ticking sound 🤦🤣
3 USBs and you didn't plug your camera in.. Whoops! Great review. (Subd)
Hahaha, I'm still a bit of a noob. Thanks for subbing, Roy. - Cam
Could you explain why things under the bonnet would get hot or worse catch on fire?
Please don’t propagate rubbish. There is a reason why EVs are more efficient than ICE vehicles.
That is where I store my charging cables in an aftermarket frunk basket.
Started off well and then went to library footage with unrelated commentary because of a camera fail?. Don't publish until you're happy with the end result]
For the 4+ you forgot ventilated frond seats and sunroof! Too many mistakes.
Yes, indeed. The frond seats sound, like, really natural, man!
It's cos it's not. But, the new version is the 2021 version, I believe
Faux leather is just as if not more desirable nowadays than real leather. Consumers don't want real leather. You see 'vegan leather' advertised too
Correction, Kia built the Niro from the ground up specifically for EV. Get your facts right!
Looks ugly and cheap.
