- Russell Stone & Joanne Stone sing "We Do It". The song has been released on to the brand new 2 CD Set issued by Lynx Music UK, it's called "The Very Best Of R&J Stone" and it has 26 tracks from Russell & Joanne. It really is a wonderful CD collection of all their best music recordings including: "We Do It", "One Chance", "Dancin' Jones", "This Will Be", "Nothing's Changed", "It Just Goes To Show" and many more! This is the first time that these recordings have been issued onto CD! Available from Amazon & I-Tunes. Joanne and I met in 1973 on a James Last World Tour. We were both studio singers although Joanne had not been in the UK that long, having moved here from the USA. The attraction was present from the moment I saw her the first day of rehearsals and it wasn't that long into the tour that we got together. We set up home later that year and it was exciting times for both of us, lots of work and lots of play. I had begun writing in 1967 moving my way through various scenarios without a glimmer of success. Joanne introduced me to Jazz and R&B artists I had never heard of and I found that music very inspiring, especially the act Ashford and Simpson, two great singers and writers. I figured I could do the same and in 1975 wrote some 5 songs for Joanne and myself to demo. The demos were heard by Lynn Cornell who was signed with the producer Phil Swern as part of the act The Pearls. She played them to him and he liked the songs and subsequently recorded them. Listening to the end product it was clear to all of us that 'We Do It' stood out a mile and he got a deal for Joanne and myself with RCA. While recording the first few tracks, Geoff Carver the engineer asked for the name of the act to put on the multi-track, Joanne and I looked at each other and we both shrugged, so I said, 'Well you'd better put R&J Stone on for the moment...' It never changed. 'We Do It' was released in January 1976 and eventually showed in the charts reaching No. 5 and staying there briefly. R&J Stone attracted a great deal of attention for the next two years, punching far above our weight in terms of chart position, and the whole R&J experience was a beautiful thing that brought us both great joy. I continue to be touched by the many people who have contacted me since the internet got up and running to share with me their joy of our music from those years, which is why I am so happy that this CD of our songs is now being released. One thing I am grateful for now is that by 1979, the year of Joanne's death, we had faded from the public arena and that allowed her to be with her family during her terminal illness and not bothered by the media which would have been horrendous. After many years I am able to look at those years with great fondness instead of just the tragedy it became for a while. I thank God for allowing me to share her living and dying. I was devastated for many years by what happened but have come through all that stronger and wiser and I would not change a thing. Life is beautiful, death inevitable, bow to inevitability and dance. Beautiful classic song, they were very talented, we lost something special when she passed so young
She did have a wonderful smile, rest in peace darling.
I LOVE this song. I was just about to turn 15 when this charted in January 1976. Their voices are perfection and blend so well. It is amazing to see this REAL LIVE performance from back in the day that just showcases what truly amazing vocalists they were. They released some great records that somehow never broke through. Joanne was a sad loss to music. So glad I discovered this video.
absolutely loved this song .. i was only 15 in 1975 and for me its timeless... theyre voices completely compliment each other and we just dont get music like this anymore......
Class of 1978 remembers this well :) pure perfection :)
Amazing...even after all these years x
At the time, this just seemed like another romantic ballad. Looking back to that brief period (early’76), I go through a nostalgia overload.
Nice to hear them ‘doin it’ live. Both excellent singers.
She passed from a rain tumour three years after this in 1979.
She was soooo beautiful. Lovely song too.
'R & J Stone' was the union of husband and wife Russell and Joanne Stone.
‘We Do It’ is a soulful, achingly tender ballad, composed by Russell, but the tragic death of Joanne in 1979 brought their singing duo and marriage to a sudden halt.
I like this beautifully sung 😊
Xx❤❤❤❤❤❤xxxx and we do it! 1976....... nearly 50 years ago #2024

A classic time for music and a great time to be young. The same month, January 1976, also gave us Answer Me (Barbara Dickson, Evil Woman (ELO), Love Machine (The Miracles), Sunshine Day (Osibisa), Squeeze Box (The Who), No Regrets (Walker Brothers), Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover (Paul Simon), It Should Have Been Me (Yvonne Fair), Oh What A Night (Four Seasons), I Love Music (O'Jays), & Walk Away From Love (David Ruffin). All those classics in one month!! imagine that nowadays.
Unfortunately it doesn't happen now days.

Such a beautiful song...I wasn't even a teenager when this came out but it was always apparent to me the sentiment was real between you both. It is a tragedy the story ended far too soon but to have this beautiful memento I hope has comforted you over the years.

This song is so moving. and so Special to 1976 for me / so sad to hear of Joannes demise / these were special times for me / never to be erased from my memory till my demise. /
Just watched the original video but seeing them here singing live vocals really touched me. I was 8 but today remembered this song! Just beautiful!!! 💖
Singing live too. What a lovely real-life married couple. So sad Joanne died 3 years later of a brain tumour.
Beautiful. Didn't know Joanne was no longer with us. Your music will live in my heart forever.
This is music. Not like today. Especially that Rap Crap. RIP Joanne, beautiful lady. Thanks for the memories 🎤
This was in the charts a few weeks before my fifth birthday
Divinely magical song and singing and thanks for the hearfelt honesty about yourself and Joanne.
I watched you guys perform this song on a rerun of a TV show called Twiggy's Juke Box, which ran late at night on a New York City TV station in 1979. I was blown away by the song, which was never a hit in the U.S. (was it even released here?). I had no idea the show was three years old, and at the time - around May of '79 - there was a massive hit here called "Reunited" by Peaches and Herb, which I always found pretty pedestrian musically. I much preferred "We Do It" and played it for all my friends on a tape recorder I used to capture the audio from the TV (you can imagine how weak the quality was). Years later, I purchased the single from an online English record store. When it arrived, I was so thrilled and played it incessantly. It's so simple but it never fails to move me. The melody and the vocals - especially Joanne's high note ("Hey Baby") - stir something inside me to this day. When I read online that JOanne had died in 1979, I was so sad. And I wondered if she had passed in May, when I first heard her angelic voice. Russell - I'm very happy you've recovered from your depression and substance abuse and reactivated your career, putting this wonderful collaboration in a healthy context. God bless you, and thanks for bringing so many of us a piece of happiness with your work!
So sweet. She was beautiful -so sad she died so young .. he looks a bit like a young and cute Elton John here and his voice is equally as good too my mother used to love this song & I remember her when I hear it. I miss you so much mum x
I remember this gorgous song and trying to listen to it on my sisters teeny tiny transistor radio in our bedroom on radio luxumbourg which famously would fade in and out.aww beautiful joanne, gone for so long.happy memories though from the more simple 70s.xx💟💟
Russell was the lead vocal on guys and dolls "There's a whole lpt of loving".
And Joanne was the female vocal on Paper Lace "Billy Don't Be A Hero". 😊
They were also married.

Such a beautiful song. So sad that Joanne was taken from us too soon. She is a cousin of Madeline Bell.
Thanks for the info, I had heard they were related.

You do it .....just the way I like it sweet swirl sensation !!!!
Gawd he was a sexy man!! .. sexy voice to match. What a lovely couple they made. So sad she passed away so young
such a beautiful and sad story
life taken in as it is with all its wonder and grief
making beauty and rejoicing in the beauty of music
fortunate people!!!
Bought it.
I can sing like both of them also
Shit is the cutest!
Does anyone know how old she was when she died?
It’s obvious they are deeply in love
Just when *he's* ''gettin' tired" of HER. Yeah, rilly.
They sound like they don’t want to sing this song as fast as it is on this performance, listen to other versions and this one just doesn’t sound right. I get the impression their willing the music to slow down on this one.
the kylie and Jason of the 70's
Not to be compared to these two, Russell and Joanne had far more class.
First time I have seen this video. Thought it was a black man singing.
Perfect racial harmony, love it
❤❤
