This is so painful to watch, I was actually holding back tears. I hope you never have to go through that again. Here's to rebuilding what you still have Mike.
That fire crew came super fast, and shoutout to that guy with the e46 giving his extinguisher, surprised other guys just drove past... I guess this video also shows that having an extinguisher is good, but having the proper one, and a nicely sized one is even more important, because if you got one but it's not enough, it's basically the same as none.
I could have told you those "Smokey and the Bandit" rear louvers were bad luck. At least you had a Little Person come in to save the day! 3:53 He's a total bad ass. Seriously.
Damn this is heartbreaking to watch. Fire is a real threat, and it’s a important reminder to have a adequate fire safety system in place. Thank you for posting this!
I started carrying an extinguisher when I was stationed in Germany with my Gen IV Swap. I unfortunately had the same thing happen to me while driving to Amsterdam, car was overboosting and blew a hole in the block at 80mph on the highway. It instantly caught the oil on fire, thankfully I was able to put it out with the one I had on hand. That was an expensive day trip.
Thanks fort posting this. I did some vehicle specific fire training for a previous job and all things considered, you did a great job in a VERY stressful situation. You got out alive, nobody else was hurt, you saved most of the car...thats like almost a perfect outcome in a situation like this. I'm glad you're okay. You didn't make as many mistakes as you probably think. You MIGHT have had better luck getting the engine cover off to PULL AIM SQUEEZE SPRAY at the base of the fire (fuel source), but there's also risk of adding additional air (one leg of the fire triangle). Go easy on yourself. You'll build a better car for this AND sharing it means countless other track nerds will learn from seeing this as well. You did the community a solid sharing this. Thanks. ANY car can catch fire. Extinguishers are cheaper than almost any part. The advantage of a bigger bottle is it gives you more time to fight a larger fire. The advantage of a fire suppression system is it takes the human element out of fighting the fire. Take care man.
I'm physically sick watching this video. Mike, I've been following you since the buildup of your last MR2 Turbo. Been there through all the steps of this car over on Apex Attack. This is truly heartbreaking. Glad you are ok and I'm sure you'll build it back better than ever.
A faulty oil pressure sensor had me unexpectedly absent during this event. It was gut wrenching to watch you go through this horrific experience, and quite easy to imagine myself in your place. I was asking out loud, where are all the workers? I'm glad you explained it in the text overlay. Dustin has always demonstrated excellent situational awareness and decision-making on track. We are blessed to have him in our group! Although I will say that he took his harness off a touch early; I assume he wouldn't have done that if I was behind him 🤣
Nooo! Love your 2gr MR2, I love the sound of that thing. Hopefully you can fix it soon, as the season is just starting. Good luck and thank you for sharing Fire extinguisher information. I’ll have to get a different style one.
Crazy how much more effective their extinguishers are. Makes me really think about adequate fire extinguishers in any car, even for normal road use. The one you had with you was like pissing on a house fire. Must have been heart wrenching to see this happening.
the reusable stainless ones like Amerex, just use low TDS tap water and surfactant. there're multiple mechanisms that make these water-based extinguishers super effective, though at the cost of weight. a) water to steam takes away heat b) surfactant coats the fuel separating it from oxygen they have models that have foam nozzles too, foam is especially useful for e85 fuels, since the alcohol make them problematic. alcohol, being so much lighter, always wants to float on top of everything. fortunately foam, combined with atmospheric air, can float on top of that.
Dude, I just randomly thought of you right now, I remember seeing your posts on MR2OC. I bought my first MR2 right around the same time you got your first one. I had so many plans for that thing, your blog that came later really inspired me. I think you may have even messaged me about something I had for sale on FB. To see this happened, and hearing the genuine distress in your voice just breaks my heart, literally made my eyes water. I am so relieved the fire crew was able to get there in time to save it. Pour the beer out for the fallen soldier, but I know you’ll come back stronger again.
Mike. So sorry this happened to you and your build. I would look at it on the bright side. If this happened outside of the track it would have taken a far worse turn than this. So glad you are safe and sound. I hope the car is able to fully recover from this (I know it will with you being it's owner) Please keep your head up sir, and take care 👍
Damn man I love watching your mr2 videos, I'm sorry that this has happened to your car I hope that you'll be able to bounce back better then ever! Keep your head up
As bad and traumatizing as it is. You're educating so many people. Thanks for posting this, I was one of the people who didn't give 2 thoughts to what fire measures i have in place.
This is heatbreaking. I'm so sorry for your loss. Glad you got out safe though. I just bought a firesuit and this has me looking at making a proper suppression system a priority.
What kind of extinguisher and size is good for fighting against oil/chemical fire? They have this new technology where you just throw a red ball in and it would explode and put fire out instant.
The unit I had been carrying in my mk2 (smaller than the 2.5 lb A/B/C rated units in my mk1's) is similar size to yours there, and I won't be relying on that one in the future for anything more than a backup in the trunk maybe at best... I'll borrow, from the mk1's, or buy another, 2.5 lb A/B/C for my mk2 for all future drives, which at least gives me more extinguisher to work with. All of mine are street cars. Thank you for posting this, it is certainly eye opening and made me realize I need a bigger unit (at least) in the mk2. Glad they were able to save the chassis and the damage wasn't worse... mainly I'm glad you're OK and that you were quick to get to a safe pull off and exited the car very quickly.
God man, my adrenaline is pumping just watching this. Little teary eyed when you told them you're just sad. This video will hopefully be used by many to save more cars; especially precious ones like ours.
So sad but so happy that you were able to save the baby before it was too late, sending you all the good vibes I can and don't worry Mike you'll come back better, faster and stronger that ever 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 from 🇨🇵
Feel so so sorry for you, absolutely gutting experience. You don’t need to apologise for your language either, totally get it. I wish you all the best getting it rebuilt.
So sorry this happened! Great video for so many reasons. Hope you will share what your new plans for fire safety are. I put a hole in my first K24 on my 5th drive about 2 months ago. The exhaust was not hot enough for a fire in my case, but it did get me thinking about what can be done to shield the manifold from oil. Your car is beautiful and I hope you can restore it.
I can imagine how you felt, it's not an easy car to work on, it takes time, commitment and hard work to keep the MR2 on the road. Please keep us updated.
Wow glad you're OK. Hope you are able to salvage the good bits from the build. Once you have a plan together, I'd love to give you a hand rebuilding. I'm just down in Seattle and can model up replacement plastic brackets and whatnot in CAD if you're unable to source them.
Sorry to see this!! Ive replayed what I would do in this moment over and over again - luckily it hasn’t happened to me YET. There was a flag station on the right prior to where you stopped. I would have gone as close to that flag station as possible so they could radio the situation in live and also so I could use their fire extinguisher when mine ran out.
bro this sucks big time and i am really sorry this happened to you after having the pleasure to meet you and also trade parts with you it sucks this happened. on a funny note this that guy was the perfect size to get under the car to put that fire out.
Shit i am really sorry about the fire, have you been able to evaluate the dmg? I hope it can be rebuilt... Oil fire is the worst nightmare as it's really difficult to extinguish... I think i will have to start thinking putting a fire supression system....
I Really Need To Make Room For A Full Size Fire Extinguisher For My Car. Not Only Is It Turbocharged Making Alot More HP Then Stock It's Also A Sound System Car With Tons Of Sound Demander, MDF, Capacitors And Lithium Batteries etc. That's My "Eggs In 1 Basket" Vehicle Too. I Couldn't Live If I Lost It All.

That dwarf is a legend getting it all down low.
Holy shit. That was hard to watch. I'm so sorry Mike!!! :(

Watching this motivates me to have a good extinguisher in my street mr2. I hope the damage wasn’t to extensive.

crying like a baby watching that, hope it can be mostly saved
Makes me cry after watching this Mike. Glad that you’re safe.

Glad you didn’t get hurt hurt man, if there’s any mr2 or 2gr parts you need that I have extras of I will gladly send them to you just let me know.
Getting out is #1 priority. Well done.
Damn.. So sorry man. I just ran across your build a month or two ago after looking into sw20 v6 swaps. It's such a nice car. Good luck on the rebuild.
It was cool to see everyone working together, but I'm really sorry you had to go through that.
Damn man I love watching your mr2 videos, I'm sorry that this has happened to your car
I hope that you'll be able to bounce back better then ever! Keep your head up
Glad you made it out safe man, you’ll be back better than before!

Wow, glad to see you saved it. I hope the damage wasn’t too severe and you can rebuild it. We used to have a 94 sw20. I loved that car. 🍻
oh man I felt your pain. Its really heart breaking. Just yesterday I was talking about how important fire safety is on the track. All the best mate

Thanks for this, we all need a reminder every now and again. I will indeed reevaluate my fire extinguisher needs.
Feel so so sorry for you, absolutely gutting experience. You don’t need to apologise for your language either, totally get it. I wish you all the best getting it rebuilt.

I know how that feels brother!! Glad to know you are ok. I held back tears thinking "dude get out, cmon get the fk out already"
Man that's hard to watch. It a worst nightmare scenario. But good to see that you are ok.
I can imagine how you felt, it's not an easy car to work on, it takes time, commitment and hard work to keep the MR2 on the road. Please keep us updated.
I am glad you made it out Mike. That was a really terrible situation.
Crazy bro. Glad you are ok. Thankful for your video.. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
What a feeling of helplessness! Sorry about your hard work. This warning I will heed and upgrade my emergency fire suppression.
Wow glad you're OK. Hope you are able to salvage the good bits from the build. Once you have a plan together, I'd love to give you a hand rebuilding. I'm just down in Seattle and can model up replacement plastic brackets and whatnot in CAD if you're unable to source them.

Glad you're okay man. You can and will rebuild your car.
jeez hope the car makes a full recovery!!!
Well... The engine certainly wont. :(
That’s tough men ! Sending all my support 😞
just curious as to what failed?
Quite sobering to watch. Glad you got out safe. Just such a shame to see this great machine in flames 😢
hopfully everything survived, besides the obvious damage of the motor an some other peaces at the back
Hi Mike. I'm really sorry to see this. Hope you are OK. Good luck getting it back in business 😥🙏🙏🙏😥👍🏾🤙
What type of extinguisher did the safety crew use?
bro this sucks big time and i am really sorry this happened to you after having the pleasure to meet you and also trade parts with you it sucks this happened. on a funny note this that guy was the perfect size to get under the car to put that fire out.
The small dude with the extinguisher tho
Shit i am really sorry about the fire, have you been able to evaluate the dmg? I hope it can be rebuilt... Oil fire is the worst nightmare as it's really difficult to extinguish... I think i will have to start thinking putting a fire supression system....

Glad u ok 👍
That is horrifying. 😞
BRo so sad for your car man, i have a 94kg foam spray fire extinguiser, i have already use it in car, is a life saver.
I got emotional watching this one.
Holy shit I got a tear watching this
Fuck Mike! I'm glad you're ok.
This was difficult to watch.
It's worse than being span around and pushed me on the freeway, didn't realize he turned me into a living orniment
this is terrifying,
Last resort, I'd be trying to pick up dirt from the ground and throwing it on it, like rip the grass up, just any sand, or dirt I could throw on it.
You'd need a shovel to do that. How much dirt do you think you could do that without a shovel? Not much to make it effective.
Dang. Hope it’s fixable. Sorry man.
Regreats :(((
NOOOOOOOO this is legit traumatizing to watch man fuck
Dam that sux
F*** that's a punch in the gut...
