  • Join Bryan as he takes a look at the Amazon Basics Number 4 hand plane. This plane costs less than $30, but is it even worth that? Let's take a look at this low priced plane to see if it is something that can be used in the shop, or if it needs to be placed on a shelf!
    Bryan will compare his Stanley Sweetheart Number 4 to this Amazon Basics Plane. There are a number of important differences between these two planes. So set your expectations low, and let's see if this plane will surprise us or not.

    Good video. I’ve bought a number of old Stanley style number 4 planes for around $20 at junk stores, estate and garage sales.
    Some are Bailey, some Craftsman, several others, almost identical to each other. Adjusting mechanisms is what separated them from the others. A lot of them were pretty rough shape, but the sole was mechanically and structurally sound. I’m assuming their original owner had already tuned them up fairly well. Its very satisfying to sharpen and clean them up to use them to make rough lumber into smooth, plus the joy of getting things to fit just right. I’ve made several totes out of live oak to replace the original handles that were broken. That’s challenging (for me as a novice), but every one gets easier to build and better fit and finish than the previous ones. I’ve got fairly large hands and I’ve bade the new totes a better size and shape to fit me. Super fun. Thanks

      I love the fact that you have restored some old planes. I really want to do that some day. I've been intrigued by old planes for quite some time now. I have watched a number of videos on how to restore them and I think I could give it a shot (or at least a rough shot). thank you so much for sharing and thanks for watching Michael!

    I bought the same plane for a project. I didn’t have the money for a planer so I bought this to do a big chunk of the work plus I wanted to see what they were like without breaking the bank. I love it even though I had to sharpen it like you did. I will be building my plane collection up as they are very nice to have. Thanks for the video and keep up the great work!!!

      Thanks so much SneakyHippo! I appreciate it! Have you checked out Rex Krueger's channel. I really like the way he breaks down hand tools. I went on a binge a couple of months ago and watched almost all his videos. I highly recommend it. Especially if you're just getting into hand tools like me. Very interesting too.

    definitely the same exact casting as the Stanley sb 4 plane bought 10 years or so ago.

      That's very interesting Ernie. Decent quality for the price for sure. I need to dust off my hand planes. They don't get enough use around my shop.

    Cool review. Not being in to hand planes, I learned a few things just from your review. It would seem that this would be a great plane to get started with. At this price, you have something leftover to spend on a sharpening system. That's been the barrier for me to getting good chisels and ultimately some planes. It doesn't make sense to spend good money on the tools if you don't spend the money on the sharpening system. It's like buying a Mercedes. Maybe you can afford the payment but if you can't afford the service, what's the point.

      I love that analogy! Very true. My very first high quality plane was a bench dogs block plane, and I love that plane. That was a little cheaper than a lot of the larger planes and it allowed me to knock down edges easily (especially on smaller projects) I definitely got spoiled with that plane when I took a step back and then purchased the Kobalt plane. I would really like to try out the Jorgensen planes, I've seen these at Lowes and the price is very reasonable. I've seen a few videos online stating that they are pretty good. At this point in my woodworking, all my planes are mostly used for softening edges. I'm still a Dewalt Planer guy at heart!

    Interesting that you bought the $28 #4 Amazon Basics plane, when they have a $34 AB version that has the wood tote and knob, chip breaker, and lateral adjustment lever. It seems like the extra $7 would be worth the extra features and still an exceptional deal.
    Also, looked at the Lowes site to price out the Kobalt, but they no longer have that for sale. Saw a couple used on eBay for around $33

      Thanks so much for the comment crowpatrol! I 100% wish I would have bought the $34 plane. When I purchased this plane the higher priced one was not available. After I got done recording this video, I was like, are you kidding me this thing is available now! I would absolutely shoot for the nicer one (in fact I left a link to it in my description once I saw it was available). It was interesting to see the blade adjustment features of this cheaper plane, as it was something I have never seen before. Thanks so much for watching! And great point!

    What was your opinion of the kobalt you didn't say?

    • @FlynndoggWoodwork
      @FlynndoggWoodwork  Рік тому +1

      Excellent Question milleradam98! I should have said a little bit more about that plane. The quality of the blade on that plane is a bit better and considerably longer than the amazon plane (almost 2X). The set up for that plane was about the same as the amazon plane. The Kobalt also has a chip breaker, etc. It is a higher quality plane in my opinion than the amazon basics plane, and I would recommend it over the amazon plane. I would not recommend either of them above the Stanley plane though! Thank you for watching!

    Take your time at garage sales and pick up an old standley cheap. Clean it, sharpen it, and you’ll have a nice quality plane. Just make sure it has all its parts and you can get a real deal.

      I wish he would give me 1/10th of 1/10th of the interest he makes in a year. If he spent that amount on a hand plane design he would dominate the industry!
