By 1970 Elvis was really into Karate and he incorporated it into his shows. He was always adapting and changing what he did. I think it really contributed to his longevity. When he did the Aloha Show he made a conscious effort not to move so much. He knew he was getting older and could not keep that high energy up for much longer.
plus he was in much better shape in the fifties and early sixties you can see the way he moves in flaming star kid Galahad jailhouse Rock Westmoreland prison much more physically capable and on the ball in the early years and when he was actually being Elvis in tune with his roots but from 68 to 70 also he's prime-time always the king
This is a show called Elvis Lives. They isolated Elvis' voice track from some of his concerts and then had his original band and backup singers play along live to concert footage and his singing. They had huge screens showing the concert footage of Elvis. It felt like a real concert. It was a great show! It was the closest I came to seeing Elvis live!

This is part of the ELVIS LIVES that was done to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his death and bring together his remaining back up singers and band.

About the changes in his 'dancing' over the years - the 1950's Elvis movements were straight out of the black churches he attended as a little boy in both Tupelo & Memphis, while the Vegas stuff is a combination of 1) his huge reaction to his proximity to & effect of drummer Ronnie Tutt and 2) to his 20 years of karate study (he was a Black Belt).

Elvis body moved to rythnhms since his younger days, if you notice he was actually conducting the music with his body. And he always stood in front of drummer, Ronnie Tutt, he worked ass for Elvis he once said"he was working for a stripper".
Astute observation about Elvis' dance moves evolving through the years. As great as he was in 70's, he didn't have the energy nor the drive to put that kind of wear and tear on his body. He was actually asked about it during the documentary (outtake) "Elvis on Tour" of why he no longer moved like he did in the 50's. Elvis responded, "I learned better."

He would have last only into his 30's if he hadn't learned different physical disciplines that stretched his youth ful years

When he was a young man he came out to make a difference...with the wild legs and all and created all this hysteria....but as an old man I think he thought in those white jumpsuits those crazy leg moves might look kind of silly. I think his karate as a lot to do with his later moves also. Just my thoughts on the subject...by regardless I loved him no matter what he did. In his movies like Spinout etc...he had much tamer moves on screen...and he would wear suits that would not go together with the wild leg moves from the 50s. Returning to Vegas he knew he had to put on a great show....which he did.

Hi Dani the begging of the 70s Elvis incorporated karate moves and of course that famous left leg shake. You have to admit he had rythm and it is interesting to know around 73 Elvis hurt his one foot and that certainly change some of his move later on. But the knowledge you gaining on this great human being he only had to walk on stage, what charisma he had. Ho and I liked your reaction. 😏👍
Elvis is the greatest singer and performer. You notice Elvis changing his dance style. He was more wild in the '50's and he was more polished in the '60's and in the '70's he used a different style of movement. It's my opinion that Elvis reinvented himself. He always changed with the times.. It could be he wanted to present a change in the way he expressed himself on stage. His talent and charisma always carried him through no matter what phase in his career.

in the 70's he was over 30 going 40...he mellowed....but what a mellow, ha ? he the man.
This concert was put on to celebrate the 25th year of passing. It was held at the Pyramid when they were doing shows. Most of his original band was assembled for this performance with his vocals and movements on giant screens. They used this one, the 68, 73 and I think 72 concerts for this show.
Believe it or not, I was at this performance and still have my shirts.

I the 1970's ELVIS trained with Chuck Norris and became a Black Belt in Karate and loved the art form and the movements so incorporated it into his stage dance moves.
he was a black belt thats what those crazy moves are and as far as the time they took and remastered concert video a few years ago and got his old band together and did that concert

From what I've read Elvis wanted to show something new and different when going back into doing live performing again. He scouted Tom Jones and liked what he was doing with moving/dancing and decided to do his version of what Tom was doing. Funny thing is, Elvis saw Tom backstage after a show once and was really curious about Tom's way of moving and asked Tom for his secret to dancing and how he learned to move like he did. Tom looked at Elvis in a puzzled look and answered, "I learned it from you." So, the secret all along was in himself the whole time. But, yes, he didn't swivel his hips or do his amazing leg movements, like side moon walking type stuff. Elvis got a lot of heat for the way he moved at the start and I think he wanted to stay away from doing stuff that involved him thrusting and swiveling, and began incorporating his karate moves into his dance moves as well.

Elvis moved with the times he sang his old stuff to please the crowds that were teenagers when he started out but was very much living in the present if you notice when he sings his early hits he shakes his leg a lot then as he moved into more modern music of each era it was more of a full body movement in relation of the 60's n then in the 70's he incorporated more of his karate moves of which he was a 3 time black belt
Dani - here is my request for what you are planning for August 16 - I'll Remember You (live from the Aloha in Hawaii 1973 concert). It's a short song, about 2 minutes. Obviously you are reacting to Elvis, and we are watching, because we all want to remember him. Seems a very appropriate way to remember him!

Fun fact about "Mystery Train." It's the favorite Elvis song of America's greatest songwriter, Paul Simon, who patterned two of his songs -- "Hearts and Bones" and "Graceland" -- on its rhythm. Paul also covered "Mystery Train" when he toured.
Dani. This was a tour that was put together years after Elvis' passing. I'm not sure if you were aware but these are all of Elvis' original band members who are playing the instruments. The purpose behind this worldwide tour was to allow people to somewhat experience what a "live" Elvis Presley show was like. Elvis was placed on huge monitors and the original music was muted. Elvis' band members then completely re-created the music portion "live" to the video. This show toured all through the United States and later on through Europe. I was fortunate enough to see this show when it came here to Cleveland, Ohio. The show does also include segments from the Aloha from Hawaii broadcast too as part of the overall Elvis Experience. As far as the dance moves, it was not really that Elvis made any conscious decision to change them.. but when your talking early Elvis remember he was about 21 years old when he really burst out on the scene. In Vegas he just turned 34 years old and honestly the body just doesn't work the same. The music had evolved into a much fuller, robust sound which also included a full backing orchestra, so Elvis tried to incorporate a different style considering music has evolved quite a bit since the 1950's through the 1970's. Ironically, in some of Elvis' live clips from 1977 (when he is in just atrocious health) he actually tried on occasion to do some of the "1950's" moves with his legs.. but obviously in his condition it just looked just silly.. but we all loved Elvis so we just kind of embraced it. Hope this helps.
This is from a show that went on to tour around the world where various Elvis performances were shown on 3 large screens above a stage... Elvis vocals from those performances were used but the music was performed by the members of his band and backing groups live on the stage... 25+ yrs after his death... And the musicians looked at monitors to help them see what Elvis was doing on the screen... I saw the show about 5 times as it was the closest I was ever gonna get to an Elvis concert... Even with this the atmosphere was amazing.... They have since done the same thing but with the Royal Philharmonic orchestra....with the video tho u can't appreciate the atmosphere created even with Elvis just on a screen.

The show toured Australia in the late 1990s and I too went as it was my only chance to attend an ‘Elvis’ concert. With many of the original band members still performing, what a treat. I absolutely loved the atmosphere and would go again.

As for his movements he was really wild in the 1950s but he was young and explosive.
In the 1960s it was mainly movies...
In the 68 special I think he just aged and matured...actor in many films/ nice costume ...more mature.
Then in the 1970s he did lots of martial art moves....and think his too busy schedule / pharmacy drugs / heart getting weaker/ he just slowed up...the 1973 special he barely moved but he still had great charisma.
He was such a great performer he could sing anything and move anyhow and it was like so accepted by his fans...
In the 1970s his health got worse and worse so yes his wild moving slowed up.
One show he told his band ...play the hell out of it....
As he caught his breath between songs.
He was breathing so hard....like a guy who was so exhausted ...because he was not getting enough zzzzzz.
But Thur it all he got an A from his fans. He was loved and is still loved.

He was really nervous for the 68 comeback special. He threaten not to come out for the show because he wasn't sure if the public would still love him. So it was a challenge to get him to come out initially.

They came back just a few yrs ago and played live to Elvis in 1970 his band were all in there 70 s and they put Elvis on screen and played live to his voice

During the 50s many adults didn’t realize he was such a great singer. Then he spent most of the 60s, acting and singing is mostly B rated movies. The Colonel wanted to just make money off of the movies and sound track. The morning after the 68 Comeback special, Newspapers across the country published articles praising his singing, charisma and talent. He was all over the front pages, radio and TV news getting such positive praise. He finished his movie obligations, and the anxious to get back performing live. He had sold out shows and one third of people on earth, watched his 73 satellite show. He showed he was truly the KING, and he didn’t need the sexy dancing. His natural talent, charisma, voice and sense of humor were enough, although he still could move, and used his karate moves, which were fun and sexy. It is still hard for me to accept how he looked the last 2 yrs of his life, because I know he was so vain about his looks. The downers, just got ahold of him. Losing Priscilla, and less time with Lisa Marie, probably contributed to it.

This is a concert from 2015. Its the band with a video of Elvis. Super cool show. Yes remastered. Elvis is in 1970, the band is playing in 2015.
He said in an interview that his dancing was unconscious, and the reason he quit was because " he learned better ways to do it".

Elvis was shot from the waist up in 1957 when he was on the Ed Sullivan show the camera only showed Elvis from the waist up because parents and preachers at that time considered Elvis's hip-shaking to be sexually vulgar. In the seventies, Elvis did not want that reputation he wanted anyone to feel comfortable at his show so he made a conscious effort not to shake his hips quite so much. God bless you, Dani.
Dani.....It's called EVOLUTION...........He became a TOTAL SHOWMAN in the 70's. And in the Hawaii Special, that was his greatest show, by far. I was at the radio city concert. It was exciting cause it's Elvis. I got to see James Burton live.

This was a tour where all the original band and back up singers went all around the world touring and using the original elvis tape from 69 and 70. This tour was in the late eighties. They sold out worldwide

Hello Dani , I was their for his 25th anniversary of his death . And that weekend is when they debuted at the Memphis auditorium which I was there , it was so cool ! On stage was all his band mates playing along with him and a giant screen with him singing ! It was so neat at the beginning it got foggy at the stage a lemo pulls in and then they started playing his introduction music just like Las Vegas . You should try to get a copy to watch you would get some ideas for August 16th !! Any way his bands from over the years were playing live on stage along with him live it was like being at one of his concerts ! You would appreciate that ! Maybe you could get a copy from a book store or Amazon !! There were parts flashing on the Tiger man song ! It was so great for me to be there in the Audience with candles !! I do have a copy in Arizona . Barns and Noble should maybe have a copy !

I have seen this show. It's a clip from his 'Elvis: That's the Way It Is' (a compilation of his Las Vegas shows from 1970) and it was superimposed on a large screen and they had the original backup singers and musicians playing in person. I saw this show in Memphis, but it has been shown in Europe and if am not mistaken every year. You can watch the original clip on YT.
This is from the 25th Anniversary Concert, live band which consisted of the surviving members of Elvis’ TCB Band, The Stamps, The Imperials, The Sweet Inspirations, and a orchestral lead by his former Conductor playing live to video of Elvis on stage. It was a good concert I saw it several times starting in 1998 (They started going on Tour after their first show at Elvis Week 1997). While it is as close as you could get to the real thing you should watch the actual performance from August 1970 with the original arrangement.

That was one hell of a show Dave. Took my twelve year old daughter to Memphis from Milwaukee and out of all my travel that was one of my best times I ever had.

Dani, please try the original version of that song from THAT'S THE WAY IT IS! It's much better! This version is with his original bandmembers from 1970, but in 2000!
As for the change of dancemoves, I think it's because Elvis matured over the years and didn't want to repeat the old known moves and he was creative and spontaneous with sooo much feeling that he moved what he feeled in every moment of each song.
Elvis' voice is real. the band ect are real ,playing in real time as they did orignaliy.

Elvis changed up his dance moves during the time he was getting ready to open at the Hilton International Hotel. He was impressed by Tom Jones’ stage presence and so he had a little talk with the man. Elvis would soon work out the moves based on Jones and perfect them to become his own.

Yes, they got the 'old touring gang' back together in the 2000's (incl. the background singers)and played along to his video image on the big screen. THOUSANDS were in attendance.

I think the reason why Elvis started dancing differently could have been because back in the 50's Elvis was criticised badly for the way he was moving and i think was even arrested one time for it and then it was jail time or the army, the new Elvis movie highlights this although it may or may not be accurate, hope this helps 🙂

Getting older my love
As Elvis grew older so did the lack of hip movement of the late 50’s and 60’s. Also because most of his movies had these dance type choreography that he just grew away from. He knew that smaller movements had the same affect which he incorporated into his shows. Same with his karate demos during the shows. One just replaced the other. Elvis also stated the same with using the slick gel to comb his hair like in the 50’s. Just grew out of it.
In the 50s Elvis just did what came naturally and what the crowd reacted to. By 69 and 70 he was very big into Karate that he began learning in the Army so most of his dance moves just like the design of his jumpsuits are based off of Karate movements that he modified for the stage. Also this version is from either the 35th or 40th Anniversary of his death when they did a big tour of his original band live with him on the screen in areas around the world. Any of the band members that were still alive and able to play were in this show and tour.
Vegas crowd he said was very different crowd all different ages.

This was a wonderful review as usual. But there is a much better version of this performance. I never seen this one but it is missing everything. The version you should see is called, tiger-man / mystery train. When the video first starts you will see Elvis walking through a crowd of people shaking their hand, a father with his baby on his shoulders, and women in the crowd screaming. Then you will start seeing the Marquee Las Vegas lights. That is the version that is the good one. That one is so fun to watch. I hope you will get a chance to see that version as well. This version just does not do it justice. I hope you will do another review this better version. It was so much fun and I would love to see your reaction to that one.

So he used those moves in his concert that's why he wore flexible jumpsuits

In the 70's elvis was more into the karate aspect of his life he practice karate almost daily.that when his style of dance change.he did more karate stances then dances.

Dani Elvis was human now. He just got older on stage and in the 70s everything was karate. Uwatch his steps especially in the upper body region and they were actually some of them were actually karate stuff and it just so happened that you listen to tigerman mystery train practice karate at I don't know if the song was connected to that particular thing but it kind of cool that his dojo teacher they call tiger-man someone can double-check me on that I could be wrong
