I saw the movie with my daughter today, and it gave me something I hadn't realized I'd been missing. Tails goes to look for Sonic, and they just... immediately get along, are immediately on the same side. No big misunderstandings. No dire secrets. No eleventh-hour betrayals or perceived betrayals. No jealousy, petty rivalry, hidden agendas, or manipulations. Their relationship is entirely sweet and wholesome, and it is incredibly refreshing to see a friendship that isn't mined for stupid and unnecessary drama.
That's how normal friendship looks like, that's why I don't see why Sonic human friend should be jealous of friendship between Sonic and Tails. They all friends and respect each other.
Omg just watched this movie. They brought in super sonic and teased the next movie. I loved this movie. I really don't agree with this guys assessment. You should've expected humans to be in it and based off the first movie how they involved humans in this movie it makes sense. And IDC this movie was awesome and superior to the first. Yeah they already had the type of dynamic going on between Sonic and Knuckles, the movie didn’t need Sonic and Tails doing the exact same thing. I agree it was refreshing to just see friendships develop and grow in this movie without a whole bunch of unwanted drama no one asked for.
I love all the small references in this movie, you can tell the crew really did their research and wanted to honor the lore and source material. Even the little things like the coffee shop being named "The Mean Bean" based on the old puyo-puyo spinoff game, or Knuckles wanting grape ice cream at the end since canonically his favorite food is grapes haha.
I squealed internally when he asked for grapes. It took me back to my very earliest forays into Sonic. Knuckles was my favorite character, and the fact his favorite food is grapes stuck in my memory all these years.
Movie 1 was more even. Movie 2 was better at its best, worse at its worst, and more Sonic than the first one by a lot (due to the limitations on characters in the first one). As for which one I'd rather rewatch, this one. You can cut out the second act at home.
The best job I’ve ever seen adapting a video game, in detail, into a movie. To the point it surprised and caught me off guard and I grew up playing these games! My kids have never been this into any other movie with sheer awe lol. Great movie (like the first one) and straight up like watching levels in the games come to glorious life. Now if we could get good true versions of Golden Axe, Knights into Dreams, Shenmue…… Sonic 2 and Adventure are my favs of the original games.
I know right ! I've never seen such good translating of "stage levels" into a film that actually flows well with the simple storyline. Simply put it was *FUN* !!
i honestly like how the humans where there as support didnt overshadow and they were fine! i like the kid and parents dynamic it has cause gives sonic this child like fun mood also for kids watching they can relate to him
Yeah I liked the humans, and any scene that might have felt superfluous actually set up something later! Like the scene in Siberia actually sets up one of Tails' gadget that pops up at the climax!
I can see how the wedding felt out of place, but I like that Maddy and her sister got to be part of the action, though here sister really played into stereotypes. I'm a black woman, though, so I'm bias. :-P
"It's not as good as the first movie" I don't usually disagree with Jeremy, but this is my moment. I think this is better then the first movie, because as Jeremy himself said, "you have enough for an awesome Sonic movie without the humans from the first movie" and because 90% of this movie IS Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman, and the other 10% is the Hawaii side quest, 90% of this movie is FAR better than the first movie. Plus, the Hawaii side quest was fun in it's last 10 minutes AND it's actually super important for the next movie, setting up most of the plot for it I'll bet.
There are definitely times I disagree with him. That'll happen with people having different viewpoints. This is one of them though. Sonic 2 is the better movie. The things that they didn't have for the first one just makes this one better. Tails and Knuckles are just that valuable. But same goes for what remains the same in Sonic and Robotnik. They remain very prominent and Sonic especially is more the start this time. It's fine that the first had a big focus on the human cast. They were playing it safe and cautiously. But...I'm glad they stopped doing that here.
100% he completely disregarded the fact that the "side plot" LITERALLY introduced a major semi-antagonistic force and presence from the adventure series onwards. G.U.N is a bigggg deal, and I knew Shadow would be next the moment they came into play. That was the moment that launched us in the Golden 3D era in the movie.
The human characters in these movies aren't really bad at all. (Tom and Maddie are actually pretty cool parents, and that G.U.N Commander has some potential) it's only the Hawaii wedding subplot that overstayed it's welcome with audiences.
I thought they did handle the James vs. Tails thing decently, as Tails came into the picture, James graduated into a father figure. It's very arguable that he finished the last movie as a father figure but they tried REALLY hard to cement it here. Sometimes it is a bit much. But I don't think they didn't try to handle that issue at all
Just saw this film today. As a Sonic fan, it was everything I ever wanted. The references, the character work (shoutout Idris Elba), the music, everything! And that post credits scene?! I damn near lost my mind in the theatre, holy shit!
I did too, even went into the theater repping Shadow's colors. He's my favorite Sonic character and I loved seeing his mid-credits scene! Idris Elba was also the perfect casting for Knuckles, really weird nobody thought of it before now.
I feel like the “Sonic is too fast for anything to be a threat” problem is minimised when you realise that Sonic is very much a kid in these movies, and thus very prone to not thinking clearly, making mistakes, etc. I think he’s wiser by the end of this movie than he was at the beginning, at least. And the mid-credits scene leaves plenty of potential for further development along those lines. And while I do agree that the movie could be trimmed down, I think most reviews have exaggerated this problem. I’ve seen it twice, and I actually timed the chunk of the film that I would have cut more or less completely - it’s only a little over five minutes. With a few other cuts, you could probably remove ten minutes without too much trouble. Any more than that, and it would stop being recognisably a sequel to the first movie. It would be a bit like removing Sally and the Freedom Fighters from a theoretical third season of SatAM - sure, it would still be recognisably Sonic, but it wouldn’t be that version of Sonic. And with all that said, those ten minutes that could have been cut were still entertaining, because the cast was clearly having a great time. In regards to Tails, I think this is legitimately the best material he’s gotten since the final season of Sonic X, though I could easily be forgetting something from the comics. Still, these are all just my thoughts, and I do appreciate that Jeremy didn’t let any of his issues with the movie overshadow all the good stuff. Something I’m sure I could learn from in regards to other movies.
Tails does get that overshadowed sidekick from time to time but let's just wait for him to fight Eggman or Chaos. As long as they don't make him cry out for Sonic's help im happy Also I cant wait till Shadow, the ultimate lifeform arrives
I agree more or less (I keep forgetting that Sonic is still a kid, but the movie does remind you a couple of times), I feel like they slammed two movies together with the whole wedding subplot, even though it's really well done and enjoyable, I would have liked that cut down to have a slightly tighter Sonic movie. I was worried when critics were saying "the movie is too long", "the movie overstays it's welcome", but those 2 hours flew by, even if I didn't want the majority of the wedding sub plot in there, I took my mum to go see it, despite not being a game/sonic fan, she had a really good time too. Overall, I can't complain about this movie since it's pretty solid and better than the critic reviews led me to believe, can't wait for Sonic 3, in the meantime, I'll buy Sonic 2 on 4K blu-ray when it comes out.

The 2nd movie was vastly superior. The wedding side story actually had a big purpose; setting up GUN, which in turn sets up you know who (won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet). It's world building. I had no problems with the humans in the movie. They still took a backseat to the Sonic characters, as it should be.

The thing i really like about this film is based on the character dynamic and the references, you can tell the film maker really love and respect the games, which is uncommon in the video game movie adaptation
Even with their being not as much time given to the tails and sonic relationship you almost do not even notice with it feeling that it just came right out of one of the games.
I just took my kids to see this movie and thought it was amazing. It felt like an Avengers movie with the cinematography and special effects. I agree that the whole wedding scene felt out of place and probably should've been cut. But overall, really great movie. They made it for the fans.
I was bored to tears during the wedding scene. There were some children sitting next to me and even they said,, "Where's Sonic?" I also thought the dance off scene wasn't too good either but I let that one slide. But in my head I was like, "why isn't Sonic using his powers?" Other than that though, I had a great time. Very fun movie which is hard to find in mainstream media. This is just a simple movie about bad guys, friends, and having fun.
I'm not too familiar with the video game franchise. I'm aware that "Eggman" is a nickname for the character in the games, but thought it was because the character design in the games made his body egg-shaped. Since Jim Carey in no way resembles an egg in this adaptation., did I miss an in-universe explanation for why Sonic greets him as Eggman at their reunion and continues calling him that throughout the movie? I don't recall that nickname being established in the first movie.
80s kids had: 1) Muppets in Manhattan 2) The Goonies 3) Labyrinth 4) Tron 5) Transformers the animated film 6) The Lost Boys 7) Home Alone So I feel we got the better deal.

There is a big difference between watching "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980 at the theatre during its theatrical release. Sure, someone can pop in a DVD but you missed the passion and love for the first film. People waited three years to see this... The world was completely different, and the excitement around Star Wars was indescribable... Everybody waited in line to see these films. Every Halloween people would dress as their favorite characters. Yeah, kids of today and tomorrow can watch Star Wars from the 80s... but they can never experience what it was like when it first released, with the worldwide success and popularity around Star Wars, there was nothing like that short lived moment in time, and there has been nothing that captured society like Star Wars in the 80s. Edit: I went with my family in 1982... I was too young to enjoy it at 1980.

I watched this review before I saw Sonic 2 and the way Jeremy goes on about the human characters being forced into this movie I thought it was gonna be something that would pull away from the experience, but then when I saw it I felt it did the opposite. The whole wedding in Hawaii scene I originally thought was gonna just be some big dumb comedy scene from what I saw in the commercials, and although there was humor it actually tied into the story cuz you find out certain characters at the wedding and I won’t spoil who it was, were in with the government who were trying to get Sonic since the first film which I wasn’t expecting. I don’t think that whole bit took away from the overall film at all, it actually made it better and tied into the movie in a pretty neat way. I thought this movie was great and the mid credit scene was awesome. Can’t wait for the 3rd one!
The wedding scene also set up the whole situation with the credits scene too. So much so that it almost gives away the credits scene for people who know Sonic lore well enough.
I really enjoyed the post wedding stuff; Rachel seeking revenge on Randall was some of the funniest scenes in the film, alongside the Siberian dance off (fight me) and Eggman saying "Earth is my turf, G"

The soundtrack to Sonic 3 and Knuckles is always a land of nostalgia for me, which makes this movie a must see for me. This movie franchise has also brought me and my daughter a little bit closer. We share a liking of the film. She sent me the trailer before I knew of the second installment being released. Priceless experiences so far.
Jeremy’s main gripe seemed to be the human story the film kept cutting back to, I didn’t mind that part, however the whole scene of Maddie busting Sonic out and Rachel confronting Randall did last way too long and distracted from the rest of the movie.
Yeah, i remember literally saying in my mind "just get to the characters i want to see already". Granted, the movie did pick up once that scene was over but i do feel they could have left the whole wedding subplot as nothing more then an excuse to spent most of the film with the Sonic characters since that's when the film iss actually fun.

To me it felt weird, Hollywood always has to make black people play these weird dated stereotypes. Why did they have to have all these jacked topless black men or why was Rachel so stereotypically loud and masculine for no reason. Kind of gross, but yeah audience in my area loved those parts 😪
@@Bookish1995 I heard plenty of laughs in the cinema where i watched the film, but it was generally silent during the moments with the wedding outside of the one moment where Rachel used Tails' lasergun. Rachel was probably the worst character from the first film anyway since her entire role was as an obnoxious in-law who spent half her screentime tied to a chair (and yes, looking back she was just as loud in the first film) so i really don't get why she of all characters had to get a subplot like this.
Agreed, the dance scene was just random, and the wedding scene was not needed at all, if anything had they been off on holiday they could've utilised Wade waaaay more and have him go from bumbling cop to becoming a great hero sherrif in Toms absence
Yeah the dance sequence was random, but cute and I like the Sonic Boom reference of all the Tails. There's another Sonic boom reference towards the end with Sonic sliding on top of the truck. There's a Sonic X reference where Knuckles is trying to hit Sonic and misses "Why don't you stand STILL?!" "Yeah. Thought about. It. And. I. PASS!" The voice work from everyone was so good here.
I’m thrilled because Knuckles has always been my fave Sonic characters. So happy this movie does him justice because Sonic Boom butchered his character
Just watched for the first time tonight, and I was happily entertained the entire time. It has the memberberries, the action, heart, and a few moments that I (a 35 y/o guy) get hyped. I don't have high expectations for video game movies, but both Sonic movies are a great time with the fam.
Ive been a sonic fan since I was about 6 or 7. Im gonna be 29 this year. I love that Sonic has withstood the test of time and Im stoked to see the sequel because I loved the original movie 💗
This movie made me remember that I'm a huge knuckles fan. I grew up with him and shadow as my favorites, but I haven't really been attached the franchise for the past 10-12 years. I felt like a kid again watching this film
Same! I use to watch the 90’s cartoon growing up and Sonic was the very first Sega Genesis game I’ve ever played and I was OBSESSED. Loved the first movie and I know I’ll love this one 😊
"How would James Marsden..." In a way the movie covered that and in a nice subtle way. Sonic 1 had Donut Lord being the buddy, because Tails isn't there. Okay fine that'll work for a film. Now in the second, he's "the Dad" even going so far as to have his wife say "We need to get our son" in the last act. They're pulling the humans away because Sonic is growing up into his hero role with his newfound allies/team, with the human family in the background. So by Sonic 3 if they just have Donut Lord and his wife merely say "be careful son" in a throwaway scene then do nothing with them, it is a decent progression in eliminating the human extras. Honestly it's a smart move on the writers, because now we can have all sorts of crazy stuff going in the 3rd film because we've slowly worked the normies into our little zany universe. Insert evil cackle here.
I appreciate that the director actually seemed to know what the lore was from the games. You know, what little lore there was to gleam froma 2d game where nobody talks lol. But it was definitely a retelling of Sonic 3 for sure.
Considering the end credit I really think movie 3 will solely focus on Sonic and Co. I just don't see how they could have Tom and Maddie in there without it being super forced. MAYBE they could take a page out of Sonic X and how that did things but it's gonna be tricky. As long as they get the Sonic characters down right which they seem to be doing I'm not at all worried.

As of now, Tails, Knuckles, and even Sonic, still have plenty to explore, and could easily make a 3rd movie without shadow. Maybe this is just me, but, if their gonna include Shadow, I want him to be the core of the story. Not just another element within the story.
How? We've been through 2 years of a pandemic, rampant inflation, riots by idiots that caused billions in damage, two crappy Olympics and now a war in Europe. It feels like it's been 5 years since February 2020, for me at least
Did the wedding scene drag-on-yes; however, it gives a perfectly justifiable in universe reason why Knuckles and Robotnik were able to advance so far into the Master Emerald labyrinth before Sonic caught up to them. Furthermore, it establishes where the Tornado comes from and how Tom and Maddie returned to Green Hills without rings. I understand people want to be entertained, but it is important to also develop the characters and scene to logically explain events. They could have easily thrown away the world built from the first film, but then they would have disregarded the character development that the fanbase came to enjoy and respect. And to anyone who is old enough to know, ejecting established character for a quick story can have disastrous consequences as evident in “The Principal and the Pauper” from the Simpsons.
@@TheMindOfHanif no, because it’s G.U.N. And they existed in the games, so they have to exist here. And it’s not the wedding scene you’re complaining about. It could have been any scenario and you would have hated it. But, because Sonic has a human family. They need the focus of screen time otherwise you’d be wondering what they were up to since they are so important to Sonic. And if not you specifically, someone would complain if they weren’t in the movie. So don’t complain about “pointless” scenes because that complaint in and of itself becomes “pointless” by association.
I do like all aspects of this movie. The humans play support and while they do detract, it’s nice they play to the emotional side of how Sonic learn good values
We got the film in the UK on Friday. I loved it! Has some odd music choices, and Knuckles is as fast as Sonic for some reason, but it's great. The last 30 minutes is the perfect Sonic sequence.
Knuckles being as fast as Sonic is not a problem tbh, since SEGA gives only the male hedgehogs an opportunity to go super. Super Knuckles is no canon anymore but we know him as a super powerful character that punched the super out of Super Sonic when they first met in the canon game. Giving him a speed boost is only fair in my opinion. That's the least they can do to undo the damage Knuckles' character have been given the past decade and even more.
Knuckles has always been fast enough to keep up with Sonic in a fight, and his strength is enough to compensate for what speed he doesn't have. He just can't run nearly as fast. I heard his traversal speed is around 100 mph, which the movie makes somewhat clear in one scene.
Oh thank God! Given the critical reception of this movie, I was beginning to fear that Sonic was gonna become one of those movie franchises that just gets worse and worse with each new film and just won't go away. Y'know, like Michael Bay's Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ice Age, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Resident Evil, Terminator and Saw.
I am going to tell you, I read only two reviews from Rotten Tomatoes. One was from Independent and the other was a random one. BOTH had bad things to say that while having one or two points, they are so poorly misguided. Both reviewers aren't clearly Sonic fans and the Independent reviewer says that the videogame references are missed from the casual audience. Like no shit, the movie is based on SONIC. A VIDEOGAME CHARACTER? HELLO?
Those are all perfect examples. I remember when the first SAW came out, and there was all this buzz. It was just a _differrent_ type of movie. I will always have a special place in my heart for Pirates because if when they became increasingly nonsensical, The directorial flair of Gore Verbinski was so just awe-inspiring to behold. Resident Evil 1, with the great Marilyn Manson opening track, showed great promise, and I think so much of what made the original Transformers work was just that most who had seen it were just surprised that Bay pulled off such a random IP in spectacular fashion. That original trailer was perfect. I can see people saying that the movies you've mentioned never really deviated from the originals all that much, and that SAW 9 is the same torture-porn shlock as the first, and then Transformers: Return of the Dark Moon King Rising wasn't thematically all that different than the original. Gore Verbinski hit gold with Pirates by casting Depp as the lead, and single-handily reinvigorated a nearly dead genre of films. SAW came out, a "bottle movie" with a newly minted director (arguably two, as the other starred in it and co-wrote the screenplay), and yet again, was just refreshing. It wasn't trying to rip off se7en, it wasn't going for slashers or even psychological horror. These movies were just _confident_ in what they were. I am so sick and tired of filmmakers nervously stepping onto the set, not fighting for their vision, and their movie becomes a bastardized, homogenized tropey-mess as a result. The first Sonic is a very confident entry where the director listened to his fans. None of us were expecting Citizen Kane. It's a friggin' blue hedgehog who wears sneakers and can spout off a few quips when he needs to. I'm definitely interested in this one, no doubt.
They did do something with Tom and Sonic's relationship tho. He says he wants Sonic to have real friends because he sees Sonic as more of a son than an equal. And wouldn't you know, this character arc is completed in both of them with the last scene at the baseball field. The wedding seen was really fun for what it was, and I think that comes down to Rachel as a character, she has great energy and that's why I think it works better than her stuff in the first one, even if it is longer.

And I know he said something after that, and I'm sure I said things too, but I have no idea beyond that what either of us said." She stated. Jim Carrey said that he enjoyed exploring Robotnik at his advanced evil side, saying, "I really had fun thinking about how that could manifest, with his voice; speaking like a synthesizer just because he thinks it's fun, you know. He's really messing with people's minds and creating that gigantic robot out of the scraps of their lives. It was really a fun thing to do; really a cloud of egoic ecstasy." Idris Elba a dedicated fan of video games said that getting to play Knuckles was "mind-boggling." As Elba explained, "You and I remember those first early games and now here we are -our sons are like, 'Wow, I can see "Sonic 2" with my dad.' That's special." A small hologram of Sonic is shown, he is standing still and tapping his foot. This is what would happen in the original Genesis Sonic games if you didn't control him and left him standing Agent Stone's coffee shop is named the Mean Bean, after the Sonic game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (1993). When he converts the coffee shop into a Supervillain Lair after reuniting with Robotnik, a large screen shows the Eggman Empire insignia from the more recent games. Tails flying a red aeroplane in the movie is similar to the one he flies in the games, even with Sonic standing on top of the wings. While not the first time he has lost his rings in the films, the way Sonic loses them scattered out of his bag, is similar to his usual way when hit in all of the games. Idris Elba told the New York Times, Knuckles' origin helped him to develop the character's voice. "He's a warrior from his tribe and English is not their first language," Elba said, "He doesn't have a sense of humor in the same way Sonic does. He's very dry and matter-of-fact, and he uses English just to get his point across and move on. He hasn't got time for niceties. We used that construct as a way to start to develop what he sounds like." Near the end of the movie Agent Stone holds up an instruction manual similar to that found in Sega game boxes like the Mega Drive, it can also be seen that the Sega logo is visible (though, in this case, the logo clearly spells "EGG," rather than "SEGA," with the same typeface used). Sonic mentions several times throughout the movie how much he hates water. Honestly one of the main reasons I want to see this sequel is Sonic and Tails’ dynamic with this being the beginning of their friendship. Too bad it sounds like it’s not as focused as Knuckles. Can anyone clarify if they still have good moments as a duo in the movie? Update: Surprised to see how many feel the same. Good to hear I’m not alone and judging from the replies, it sounds like I’ll still be satisfied with their scenes. Update 2: Finally saw it, and while I wish Tails had as big of an arc and introduction as Knuckles did, I was still pretty satisfied with how relevant he was for the most part. If you love Tails, you’re gonna be happy with him and Sonic’s dynamic here. Especially in the cabin scene, which is too wholesome than it had any right to be.
Am I the only one who enjoyed the humans? They weren't on there for long and the wedding scene was quite funny and the twist really came off surprising

I personally think this film was awesome, i loved seeing them all on the screen. All perfectly played, voiced and animated. I do still think Knuckles should have stayed out until a possible 3rd film as it be nice to see Sonic and Tails work together and work on this friendship thing. However, either way, i still feel this film was awesome.
Saw Sonic 2 today and thought it was even better than the first one. Fun storyline, Knuckles and Tails were great. I loved the scene in the temple and when Sonic became super sonic, can't wait to see Shadow in Sonic 3 💯👍
I just watch it few hours ago, it was a masterpiece for a video game adaptation. And the human characters are actually important, their friendship connect Sonic and friends to the earth realm and made this bunch of alliens belong here. Especially when they revealed that some special item are deliberately hidden on this planet, so Sonic and friends are now basically protector's of the earth. 😁
Got me to watch Adam Project, I ended up recommending it to pretty much everyone. I really appreciate your review style. In that you acknowledge what a movie is attempting to accomplish, how well it does (or doesnt) and who it would appeal to. Including situational variables, like who to watch it with and on what inebriants :) Seems simple but it's a hard thing to do.

thats always my gripe in a nutshell, when they have a fully fleshed out universe but somehow they always feel the need to attach "The Real World" to it. Then you have a ton of unnecessary side characters. Even if they stick the landing, the problem with sequels is they can never replicate the landing again.
My favorite sonic game was always sonic adventure 2. The first sonic game I played through so it just leaves a lasting impression. Sonic 2 is a close second tho

Even though I didn't see the movie for myself, just basing it on the trailers I honestly can't wrap my head around anybody saying that the first movie was better in any way shape or form. I went to the first movie with very high expectations, and left really disappointed by just an okay movie. From what I've seen of the sequel, there's no way I'll find it worse than the first.

That’s because of different tastes, like frozen for example. It’s pretty split in wether you prefer the first or the second; I, for one, prefer the second Jeremy is still a human being, hell prefer things some of us don’t, and there’s a plethora of movies he dislikes that I like, and plenty of movies he likes that I dislike So Don’t always base a movie because of the opinions of people, because splits will always usually happen unless a movie is exeptionally bad or exeptionally good, and even then splits still exists. There’s plenty of nuance in this topics, so just watch the movies for yourself and try to keep your expectations as tempered as possible
I love how the filmmakers in Sonic 2 use the source material and it's references to the games are in tone with the film itself unlike that lame vampire superhero film Sony made recently as I like we got a good version of the Knuckles we haven't seen from the games since the early days of it and Jim Carrey again kills it here. Defiantly looking forward to sonic 3. Gotta go fast!
I liked this one more than the first one! And that’s because of the additions of Tails and Knuckles. They really make it feel more like a Sonic movie that was missing from the first, including the whole Master Emerald plot. I’d agree that them showing the humans is probably the less interesting part of the movie. The wedding and the whole scene of the two sisters trying to confront the guards was a bit lame. But the one sister going in to confront her fiancé was a funny moment, so I enjoyed that.
I like this one more then the first one. I liked Knockles. He was awesome 👌. Tails had very useful gadgets. The wedding part was OK But the fights were great, and it had more elements from the game than the first one did.
Ok, I've been a Sonic fan since it started played and seen all the cartoons. You have to see Sonic X to understand the human side of things along with Sonic Adventure 2 for the most part. Non Sonic fan reviewers and critics will never understand fully. Jeremy said Knuckles over shadow's everything and Tails was sideline. Well Tails has always been a sideline Character. Hes best used in Sonic Adventure 2. We know about Sonic already. Look at Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Hes really the main focus and people wanted to know more about him. The only problem this movie is going to have is I feel like they are trying to connect Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 together. I haven't seen it yet and will next week. I've listen to reviews and I feel if your not a kid or a Sonic fan you will never understand the Sonic universe.
I’ve never been a huge sonic fan, but when I saw THAT character in the mid credits scene, I just know that I’ll be watching the third movie on day one!
As a hardcore Sonic fan, all of the Easter eggs and references to the games (Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3, and Sonic Adventure 1 & 2) in this movie were so on point! All of the nostalgia wrapped up into this new story of how Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles meet has truly been a treat! So do yourself a favor and just go see this movie and have a blast, whether you are a fan of the franchise or not! 😁💙
I saw the movie on Thursday (opening night). This movie had the biggest reaction from the audience during a mid/post credits scene that I've ever heard. The audience excitement and cheering far exceeded any Marvel reveal when the mid-credits scene revealed its tease for the next sequel. I grew up in the Sega Genesis days, but never owned one myself. My only familiarity with the video game franchise is occasionally playing the first two games when I would go visit one of my cousins. I watched this movie with another relative, and we had no idea why this reveal in the mid-credits scene was so significant.
I have to disagree, I believe Tom at sonic's relationship deepened here in this sequel and it was done very well. So much so he became a father figure. I do agree that it can feel like some humans in this movie is holding things back tho. As far as tails goes, he was just introduced and decleared a friend so there's still time to build on sonic and tails' friendship in the next movie.
Jeremy you, MUST watch "everything everywhere all at once" i live in NY so i saw it in IMAX during its limited run but it should be having a wide release this week. It's Possibly* the greatest film of all time ever. After watching it i dont know how dr strange 2 can live up to the name multiverse of madness. It's truly bonkers, hilarious, & both times i cried at the end 3 tears. 2 in the right, 1 in the left eye. Go watch it!
My favorite sonic game absolutely has to be Adventure 2. Something about it’s killer soundtrack and fun levels just always brings me back with a smile on my face
for some reason thinking of rouge in the movie design scares me but I hope we get some scenes like the island explosion or sonic vs shadow in the space station. Or even sonic using a fake emerald to use chaos control

Most to least favorite: Sonic 2, Sonic CD, Sonic 1, 3&Knuckles, Sonic 3, Spin ball. Sonic 2 was my first video game. I was so little, my mom and dad would take turns helping me beat wing fortress and death egg zone. I remember having notes on Silver Sonic's patterns. My mom was really good in the wing fortress level.
All of the wedding stuff was really smart. My daughter and I loved the sonic stuff. My wife, who doesn't care so much about sonic, loved the silly wedding side story. It made it more enjoyable for the family as a whole and I think helps the movie reach out to a broader audience.
I actually disagree unfortunately… I think the wedding stuff was fine in the beginning/middle- though at the end it got weird and campy. It was cute for the ‘not into sonic’ mom crowd I guess - to get them into the nerddom, though I would’ve like them tighten that part up (conveniently the temple near the wedding, why the undercover bit, etc ) . The whole human ending felt contrived. Though it’s a kids movie and I’m not the same 6 year who fell in love with sonic ahah - loved the Easter eggs, battles and concepts as I will always be a Sonic Fan
I definitely agree that the wedding part could've been far more of a background event than it turned out to be in the actual film. However, I think another 20 minutes that could've been cut out and SHOULD have been cut was the weird Siberian dance-off. The two events felt more like they were there for comedy's sake rather than adding to the overall experience and plot. In my mind, a flashback to Knuckles' childhood where he could be seen surviving on his own and maturing into a hardened, bitter warrior would've been a far more effective use of those 30-40 minutes. It could've set the tone and backstory for Knuckles more than it just being explained in five minutes during the snowboarding scene. I think that while the first movie had better pacing and usage of time, it was more of a set-up for who Sonic was and how he was going to put the real events of the second movie into motion. It being more an actionized buddy-road-trip flick really worked into its favor. However, there's only so many times you can see Sonic beat up cannon fodder robots before the suspense starts getting taken out of the fight scenes, and I think that's where the second movie really shines in its own right. The second film did itself a favor by leaning into all of the fighting and adventure that's expected from a piece of Sonic media. Where it really struggled was when when the action stopped, because it felt kind of like a mini version of Venom 2's problem that you said perfectly in your review for that video - the movie knows how to set up a scene that's non-action, and what it wants to get to after the non-action is done, but it has no idea how to get through the non-action sequences. The only times Sonic games and shows really take a break from fighting and adventuring is to further character development or world/setting/lore development. The directors for this film just clearly didn't have that in their minds, and like you said, they had a lot of leftover human characters who were great for fleshing out the world built in the first movie, but were kind of left dangling as the second movie didn't need them anymore since, hey, the focus is now squarely on the Sonic cast rather than the human cast. I don't think I'd watch this again by itself just to unless I could skip through the aforementioned lacking scenes such as the dance battle and the wedding scene, but I don't think I'd have a problem with watching it as a duo-marathon in preparation for the third movie's release, which I'm unbelievably excited for! The rating I'd give this film is probably a 3.5/5 compared to the first one's 4/5. It does action very well, it's very entertaining, and Knuckles is highly enjoyable. I think that the Super Sonic scene was one of the most badass fight scenes put to the big screen. However, it does slack in some areas and it just fumbles the human side of the story.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis will always be my favorite Sonic game and, in my opinion, one of the greatest video games of all time. The soundtrack for it is also really great.
I saw the movie with my daughter today, and it gave me something I hadn't realized I'd been missing. Tails goes to look for Sonic, and they just... immediately get along, are immediately on the same side. No big misunderstandings. No dire secrets. No eleventh-hour betrayals or perceived betrayals. No jealousy, petty rivalry, hidden agendas, or manipulations. Their relationship is entirely sweet and wholesome, and it is incredibly refreshing to see a friendship that isn't mined for stupid and unnecessary drama.
That's how normal friendship looks like, that's why I don't see why Sonic human friend should be jealous of friendship between Sonic and Tails. They all friends and respect each other.
Sonic is chill like that tho.

Yeah they already had the type of dynamic going on between Sonic and Knuckles, the movie didn’t need Sonic and Tails doing the exact same thing. I agree it was refreshing to just see friendships develop and grow in this movie without a whole bunch of unwanted drama no one asked for.
Human characters other than Eggman holding the story back just by existing is pretty much a Sonic trope at this point.
Fingers crossed we never see Elise brought to the big screen.

I love all the small references in this movie, you can tell the crew really did their research and wanted to honor the lore and source material. Even the little things like the coffee shop being named "The Mean Bean" based on the old puyo-puyo spinoff game, or Knuckles wanting grape ice cream at the end since canonically his favorite food is grapes haha.
I squealed internally when he asked for grapes. It took me back to my very earliest forays into Sonic. Knuckles was my favorite character, and the fact his favorite food is grapes stuck in my memory all these years.

Movie 1 was more even. Movie 2 was better at its best, worse at its worst, and more Sonic than the first one by a lot (due to the limitations on characters in the first one).
As for which one I'd rather rewatch, this one. You can cut out the second act at home.

The best job I’ve ever seen adapting a video game, in detail, into a movie. To the point it surprised and caught me off guard and I grew up playing these games! My kids have never been this into any other movie with sheer awe lol.
Great movie (like the first one) and straight up like watching levels in the games come to glorious life.
Now if we could get good true versions of Golden Axe, Knights into Dreams, Shenmue……
Sonic 2 and Adventure are my favs of the original games.

I don't usually disagree with Jeremy, but this is my moment.
I think this is better then the first movie, because as Jeremy himself said, "you have enough for an awesome Sonic movie without the humans from the first movie" and because 90% of this movie IS Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman, and the other 10% is the Hawaii side quest, 90% of this movie is FAR better than the first movie. Plus, the Hawaii side quest was fun in it's last 10 minutes AND it's actually super important for the next movie, setting up most of the plot for it I'll bet.
There are definitely times I disagree with him. That'll happen with people having different viewpoints. This is one of them though. Sonic 2 is the better movie. The things that they didn't have for the first one just makes this one better. Tails and Knuckles are just that valuable. But same goes for what remains the same in Sonic and Robotnik. They remain very prominent and Sonic especially is more the start this time.
It's fine that the first had a big focus on the human cast. They were playing it safe and cautiously. But...I'm glad they stopped doing that here.
100% he completely disregarded the fact that the "side plot" LITERALLY introduced a major semi-antagonistic force and presence from the adventure series onwards. G.U.N is a bigggg deal, and I knew Shadow would be next the moment they came into play. That was the moment that launched us in the Golden 3D era in the movie.
The human characters in these movies aren't really bad at all. (Tom and Maddie are actually pretty cool parents, and that G.U.N Commander has some potential) it's only the Hawaii wedding subplot that overstayed it's welcome with audiences.

I thought they did handle the James vs. Tails thing decently, as Tails came into the picture, James graduated into a father figure. It's very arguable that he finished the last movie as a father figure but they tried REALLY hard to cement it here. Sometimes it is a bit much. But I don't think they didn't try to handle that issue at all

Just saw this film today. As a Sonic fan, it was everything I ever wanted. The references, the character work (shoutout Idris Elba), the music, everything! And that post credits scene?! I damn near lost my mind in the theatre, holy shit!
I did too, even went into the theater repping Shadow's colors. He's my favorite Sonic character and I loved seeing his mid-credits scene! Idris Elba was also the perfect casting for Knuckles, really weird nobody thought of it before now.

I feel like the “Sonic is too fast for anything to be a threat” problem is minimised when you realise that Sonic is very much a kid in these movies, and thus very prone to not thinking clearly, making mistakes, etc. I think he’s wiser by the end of this movie than he was at the beginning, at least. And the mid-credits scene leaves plenty of potential for further development along those lines.
And while I do agree that the movie could be trimmed down, I think most reviews have exaggerated this problem. I’ve seen it twice, and I actually timed the chunk of the film that I would have cut more or less completely - it’s only a little over five minutes. With a few other cuts, you could probably remove ten minutes without too much trouble. Any more than that, and it would stop being recognisably a sequel to the first movie. It would be a bit like removing Sally and the Freedom Fighters from a theoretical third season of SatAM - sure, it would still be recognisably Sonic, but it wouldn’t be that version of Sonic. And with all that said, those ten minutes that could have been cut were still entertaining, because the cast was clearly having a great time.
In regards to Tails, I think this is legitimately the best material he’s gotten since the final season of Sonic X, though I could easily be forgetting something from the comics.
Still, these are all just my thoughts, and I do appreciate that Jeremy didn’t let any of his issues with the movie overshadow all the good stuff. Something I’m sure I could learn from in regards to other movies.

I agree more or less (I keep forgetting that Sonic is still a kid, but the movie does remind you a couple of times), I feel like they slammed two movies together with the whole wedding subplot, even though it's really well done and enjoyable, I would have liked that cut down to have a slightly tighter Sonic movie. I was worried when critics were saying "the movie is too long", "the movie overstays it's welcome", but those 2 hours flew by, even if I didn't want the majority of the wedding sub plot in there, I took my mum to go see it, despite not being a game/sonic fan, she had a really good time too.
Overall, I can't complain about this movie since it's pretty solid and better than the critic reviews led me to believe, can't wait for Sonic 3, in the meantime, I'll buy Sonic 2 on 4K blu-ray when it comes out.

The 2nd movie was vastly superior. The wedding side story actually had a big purpose; setting up GUN, which in turn sets up you know who (won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet). It's world building. I had no problems with the humans in the movie. They still took a backseat to the Sonic characters, as it should be.
The one video game adaptation movie that actually listens and cares about the original video game ip and it's fans I think.
Detective Pikachu was a good one as well. Kinda sad we haven’t gotten a new announcement for live action Pokemon honestly.

The thing i really like about this film is based on the character dynamic and the references, you can tell the film maker really love and respect the games, which is uncommon in the video game movie adaptation
Even with their being not as much time given to the tails and sonic relationship you almost do not even notice with it feeling that it just came right out of one of the games.
Unlike what I hear about the Halo series on Paramount+, where the show runners and other crew never play the games at all.

I just took my kids to see this movie and thought it was amazing. It felt like an Avengers movie with the cinematography and special effects. I agree that the whole wedding scene felt out of place and probably should've been cut. But overall, really great movie. They made it for the fans.
I was bored to tears during the wedding scene. There were some children sitting next to me and even they said,, "Where's Sonic?"
I also thought the dance off scene wasn't too good either but I let that one slide. But in my head I was like, "why isn't Sonic using his powers?"
Other than that though, I had a great time. Very fun movie which is hard to find in mainstream media. This is just a simple movie about bad guys, friends, and having fun.

Jim Carrey was born to play Eggman! He nailed it in the first film.

I'm not too familiar with the video game franchise. I'm aware that "Eggman" is a nickname for the character in the games, but thought it was because the character design in the games made his body egg-shaped.
Since Jim Carey in no way resembles an egg in this adaptation., did I miss an in-universe explanation for why Sonic greets him as Eggman at their reunion and continues calling him that throughout the movie? I don't recall that nickname being established in the first movie.

There is a big difference between watching "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980 at the theatre during its theatrical release. Sure, someone can pop in a DVD but you missed the passion and love for the first film. People waited three years to see this...
The world was completely different, and the excitement around Star Wars was indescribable... Everybody waited in line to see these films. Every Halloween people would dress as their favorite characters.
Yeah, kids of today and tomorrow can watch Star Wars from the 80s... but they can never experience what it was like when it first released, with the worldwide success and popularity around Star Wars, there was nothing like that short lived moment in time, and there has been nothing that captured society like Star Wars in the 80s.
Edit: I went with my family in 1982... I was too young to enjoy it at 1980.

Anyway it doesn't matter, star wars isn't for kids anyway. It's more suited for a teenager. Also star wars is still the same if you forget about some movies. Besides all things come to an end and right now you sound like someone who acts like 80s is better.
I watched this review before I saw Sonic 2 and the way Jeremy goes on about the human characters being forced into this movie I thought it was gonna be something that would pull away from the experience, but then when I saw it I felt it did the opposite. The whole wedding in Hawaii scene I originally thought was gonna just be some big dumb comedy scene from what I saw in the commercials, and although there was humor it actually tied into the story cuz you find out certain characters at the wedding and I won’t spoil who it was, were in with the government who were trying to get Sonic since the first film which I wasn’t expecting. I don’t think that whole bit took away from the overall film at all, it actually made it better and tied into the movie in a pretty neat way. I thought this movie was great and the mid credit scene was awesome. Can’t wait for the 3rd one!
The wedding scene also set up the whole situation with the credits scene too. So much so that it almost gives away the credits scene for people who know Sonic lore well enough.

I really enjoyed the post wedding stuff; Rachel seeking revenge on Randall was some of the funniest scenes in the film, alongside the Siberian dance off (fight me) and Eggman saying "Earth is my turf, G"

The soundtrack to Sonic 3 and Knuckles is always a land of nostalgia for me, which makes this movie a must see for me. This movie franchise has also brought me and my daughter a little bit closer. We share a liking of the film. She sent me the trailer before I knew of the second installment being released. Priceless experiences so far.
The first movie was a helluva surprise so I can't wait to see this
Jeremy’s main gripe seemed to be the human story the film kept cutting back to, I didn’t mind that part, however the whole scene of Maddie busting Sonic out and Rachel confronting Randall did last way too long and distracted from the rest of the movie.
Yeah, i remember literally saying in my mind "just get to the characters i want to see already". Granted, the movie did pick up once that scene was over but i do feel they could have left the whole wedding subplot as nothing more then an excuse to spent most of the film with the Sonic characters since that's when the film iss actually fun.

@@Bookish1995 I heard plenty of laughs in the cinema where i watched the film, but it was generally silent during the moments with the wedding outside of the one moment where Rachel used Tails' lasergun. Rachel was probably the worst character from the first film anyway since her entire role was as an obnoxious in-law who spent half her screentime tied to a chair (and yes, looking back she was just as loud in the first film) so i really don't get why she of all characters had to get a subplot like this.

Yeah the dance sequence was random, but cute and I like the Sonic Boom reference of all the Tails. There's another Sonic boom reference towards the end with Sonic sliding on top of the truck. There's a Sonic X reference where Knuckles is trying to hit Sonic and misses "Why don't you stand STILL?!" "Yeah. Thought about. It. And. I. PASS!" The voice work from everyone was so good here.

Just watched for the first time tonight, and I was happily entertained the entire time. It has the memberberries, the action, heart, and a few moments that I (a 35 y/o guy) get hyped.
I don't have high expectations for video game movies, but both Sonic movies are a great time with the fam.

This movie made me remember that I'm a huge knuckles fan. I grew up with him and shadow as my favorites, but I haven't really been attached the franchise for the past 10-12 years. I felt like a kid again watching this film

In a way the movie covered that and in a nice subtle way. Sonic 1 had Donut Lord being the buddy, because Tails isn't there. Okay fine that'll work for a film. Now in the second, he's "the Dad" even going so far as to have his wife say "We need to get our son" in the last act.
They're pulling the humans away because Sonic is growing up into his hero role with his newfound allies/team, with the human family in the background.
So by Sonic 3 if they just have Donut Lord and his wife merely say "be careful son" in a throwaway scene then do nothing with them, it is a decent progression in eliminating the human extras.
Honestly it's a smart move on the writers, because now we can have all sorts of crazy stuff going in the 3rd film because we've slowly worked the normies into our little zany universe. Insert evil cackle here.
I appreciate that the director actually seemed to know what the lore was from the games. You know, what little lore there was to gleam froma 2d game where nobody talks lol. But it was definitely a retelling of Sonic 3 for sure.
Considering the end credit I really think movie 3 will solely focus on Sonic and Co.
I just don't see how they could have Tom and Maddie in there without it being super forced. MAYBE they could take a page out of Sonic X and how that did things but it's gonna be tricky. As long as they get the Sonic characters down right which they seem to be doing I'm not at all worried.

As of now, Tails, Knuckles, and even Sonic, still have plenty to explore, and could easily make a 3rd movie without shadow. Maybe this is just me, but, if their gonna include Shadow, I want him to be the core of the story. Not just another element within the story.

Did the wedding scene drag-on-yes; however, it gives a perfectly justifiable in universe reason why Knuckles and Robotnik were able to advance so far into the Master Emerald labyrinth before Sonic caught up to them. Furthermore, it establishes where the Tornado comes from and how Tom and Maddie returned to Green Hills without rings.
I understand people want to be entertained, but it is important to also develop the characters and scene to logically explain events.
They could have easily thrown away the world built from the first film, but then they would have disregarded the character development that the fanbase came to enjoy and respect.
And to anyone who is old enough to know, ejecting established character for a quick story can have disastrous consequences as evident in “The Principal and the Pauper” from the Simpsons.

And it’s not the wedding scene you’re complaining about. It could have been any scenario and you would have hated it.
But, because Sonic has a human family. They need the focus of screen time otherwise you’d be wondering what they were up to since they are so important to Sonic. And if not you specifically, someone would complain if they weren’t in the movie.
So don’t complain about “pointless” scenes because that complaint in and of itself becomes “pointless” by association.

We got the film in the UK on Friday. I loved it! Has some odd music choices, and Knuckles is as fast as Sonic for some reason, but it's great. The last 30 minutes is the perfect Sonic sequence.
Knuckles being as fast as Sonic is not a problem tbh, since SEGA gives only the male hedgehogs an opportunity to go super.
Super Knuckles is no canon anymore but we know him as a super powerful character that punched the super out of Super Sonic when they first met in the canon game.
Giving him a speed boost is only fair in my opinion. That's the least they can do to undo the damage Knuckles' character have been given the past decade and even more.
Knuckles has always been fast enough to keep up with Sonic in a fight, and his strength is enough to compensate for what speed he doesn't have. He just can't run nearly as fast. I heard his traversal speed is around 100 mph, which the movie makes somewhat clear in one scene.

Given the critical reception of this movie, I was beginning to fear that Sonic was gonna become one of those movie franchises that just gets worse and worse with each new film and just won't go away. I am going to tell you, I read only two reviews from Rotten Tomatoes. One was from Independent and the other was a random one. BOTH had bad things to say that while having one or two points, they are so poorly misguided. Both reviewers aren't clearly Sonic fans and the Independent reviewer says that the videogame references are missed from the casual audience. Like no shit, the movie is based on SONIC. A VIDEOGAME CHARACTER? HELLO?
Those are all perfect examples. I remember when the first SAW came out, and there was all this buzz. It was just a _differrent_ type of movie. I will always have a special place in my heart for Pirates because if when they became increasingly nonsensical, The directorial flair of Gore Verbinski was so just awe-inspiring to behold. Resident Evil 1, with the great Marilyn Manson opening track, showed great promise, and I think so much of what made the original Transformers work was just that most who had seen it were just surprised that Bay pulled off such a random IP in spectacular fashion. That original trailer was perfect.
I can see people saying that the movies you've mentioned never really deviated from the originals all that much, and that SAW 9 is the same torture-porn shlock as the first, and then Transformers: Return of the Dark Moon King Rising wasn't thematically all that different than the original.
Gore Verbinski hit gold with Pirates by casting Depp as the lead, and single-handily reinvigorated a nearly dead genre of films. SAW came out, a "bottle movie" with a newly minted director (arguably two, as the other starred in it and co-wrote the screenplay), and yet again, was just refreshing. It wasn't trying to rip off se7en, it wasn't going for slashers or even psychological horror. These movies were just _confident_ in what they were. I am so sick and tired of filmmakers nervously stepping onto the set, not fighting for their vision, and their movie becomes a bastardized, homogenized tropey-mess as a result.
The first Sonic is a very confident entry where the director listened to his fans. None of us were expecting Citizen Kane. It's a friggin' blue hedgehog who wears sneakers and can spout off a few quips when he needs to. I'm definitely interested in this one, no doubt.

They did do something with Tom and Sonic's relationship tho. He says he wants Sonic to have real friends because he sees Sonic as more of a son than an equal. And wouldn't you know, this character arc is completed in both of them with the last scene at the baseball field.
The wedding seen was really fun for what it was, and I think that comes down to Rachel as a character, she has great energy and that's why I think it works better than her stuff in the first one, even if it is longer.

Jim Carrey said that he enjoyed exploring Robotnik at his advanced evil side, saying, "I really had fun thinking about how that could manifest, with his voice; speaking like a synthesizer just because he thinks it's fun, you know. He's really messing with people's minds and creating that gigantic robot out of the scraps of their lives. It was really a fun thing to do; really a cloud of egoic ecstasy."
Idris Elba a dedicated fan of video games said that getting to play Knuckles was "mind-boggling." As Elba explained, "You and I remember those first early games and now here we are -our sons are like, 'Wow, I can see "Sonic 2" with my dad.' That's special."
A small hologram of Sonic is shown, he is standing still and tapping his foot. This is what would happen in the original Genesis Sonic games if you didn't control him and left him standing
Agent Stone's coffee shop is named the Mean Bean, after the Sonic game Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (1993). When he converts the coffee shop into a Supervillain Lair after reuniting with Robotnik, a large screen shows the Eggman Empire insignia from the more recent games.
Tails flying a red aeroplane in the movie is similar to the one he flies in the games, even with Sonic standing on top of the wings.
While not the first time he has lost his rings in the films, the way Sonic loses them scattered out of his bag, is similar to his usual way when hit in all of the games.
Idris Elba told the New York Times, Knuckles' origin helped him to develop the character's voice. "He's a warrior from his tribe and English is not their first language," Elba said, "He doesn't have a sense of humor in the same way Sonic does. Near the end of the movie Agent Stone holds up an instruction manual similar to that found in Sega game boxes like the Mega Drive, it can also be seen that the Sega logo is visible (though, in this case, the logo clearly spells "EGG," rather than "SEGA," with the same typeface used).
Sonic mentions several times throughout the movie how much he hates water. Gamers will know why, with the hedgehog's underwater exploits often being accompanied by a nerve-jangling countdown until his oxygen expires. In the movie like in the games Sonic wards off drowning by inhaling a bubble underwater
During one scene, the song "Barracuda" by Heart is played. "BARACUDA" (B, A, Right, A, C, Up, Down, A) is the level select code for Sonic 3D Blast (1996).
Tails' real name is Miles Prower. A pun on 'miles per hour', Tails reveals his name during the end of the movie but it almost never became part of Sonic history at all. As legend would have it, Sega's American branch was more in favor of the 'Tails' name over Miles Prower. A compromise was reached, with Miles being the twin-tailed fox's real name and Tails being used in-game. Remnants of the original 'Miles' decision can still be seen up in lights in the background of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992)'s Casino Night Zone.

Update 2: Finally saw it, and while I wish Tails had as big of an arc and introduction as Knuckles did, I was still pretty satisfied with how relevant he was for the most part. If you love Tails, you’re gonna be happy with him and Sonic’s dynamic here. Especially in the cabin scene, which is too wholesome than it had any right to be.

I personally think this film was awesome, i loved seeing them all on the screen. All perfectly played, voiced and animated. I do still think Knuckles should have stayed out until a possible 3rd film as it be nice to see Sonic and Tails work together and work on this friendship thing. However, either way, i still feel this film was awesome.
Saw Sonic 2 today and thought it was even better than the first one. Fun storyline, Knuckles and Tails were great. I loved the scene in the temple and when Sonic became super sonic, can't wait to see Shadow in Sonic 3 💯👍
I just watch it few hours ago, it was a masterpiece for a video game adaptation. And the human characters are actually important, their friendship connect Sonic and friends to the earth realm and made this bunch of alliens belong here. Especially when they revealed that some special item are deliberately hidden on this planet, so Sonic and friends are now basically protector's of the earth. 😁
Got me to watch Adam Project, I ended up recommending it to pretty much everyone.
I really appreciate your review style. In that you acknowledge what a movie is attempting to accomplish, how well it does (or doesnt) and who it would appeal to. Including situational variables, like who to watch it with and on what inebriants :)

thats always my gripe in a nutshell, when they have a fully fleshed out universe but somehow they always feel the need to attach "The Real World" to it. Then you have a ton of unnecessary side characters. Even if they stick the landing, the problem with sequels is they can never replicate the landing again.

Even though I didn't see the movie for myself, just basing it on the trailers I honestly can't wrap my head around anybody saying that the first movie was better in any way shape or form. I went to the first movie with very high expectations, and left really disappointed by just an okay movie. From what I've seen of the sequel, there's no way I'll find it worse than the first.
I think you should probably see it for yourself before you get disappointed again lol.

That’s because of different tastes, like frozen for example. It’s pretty split in wether you prefer the first or the second; I, for one, prefer the second
Jeremy is still a human being, hell prefer things some of us don’t, and there’s a plethora of movies he dislikes that I like, and plenty of movies he likes that I dislike
So Don’t always base a movie because of the opinions of people, because splits will always usually happen unless a movie is exeptionally bad or exeptionally good, and even then splits still exists.
There’s plenty of nuance in this topics, so just watch the movies for yourself and try to keep your expectations as tempered as possible
I really enjoyed this movie. Definitely prefer it to the first. You can tell they have a genuine respect and understanding for the material.
Sonic Heroes was my first Sonic game, and is still my favorite. It’s just a joyous good time with an infectious personality. I adore that game.

I love how the filmmakers in Sonic 2 use the source material and it's references to the games are in tone with the film itself unlike that lame vampire superhero film Sony made recently as I like we got a good version of the Knuckles we haven't seen from the games since the early days of it and Jim Carrey again kills it here. Defiantly looking forward to sonic 3. Gotta go fast!

I liked this one more than the first one! And that’s because of the additions of Tails and Knuckles. They really make it feel more like a Sonic movie that was missing from the first, including the whole Master Emerald plot.
I’d agree that them showing the humans is probably the less interesting part of the movie. The wedding and the whole scene of the two sisters trying to confront the guards was a bit lame. But the one sister going in to confront her fiancé was a funny moment, so I enjoyed that.
I like this one more then the first one. I liked Knockles. He was awesome 👌. Tails had very useful gadgets. The wedding part was OK
But the fights were great, and it had more elements from the game than the first one did.

Ok, I've been a Sonic fan since it started played and seen all the cartoons. You have to see Sonic X to understand the human side of things along with Sonic Adventure 2 for the most part. Non Sonic fan reviewers and critics will never understand fully. Jeremy said Knuckles over shadow's everything and Tails was sideline. Well Tails has always been a sideline Character. Hes best used in Sonic Adventure 2. We know about Sonic already. Look at Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Hes really the main focus and people wanted to know more about him. The only problem this movie is going to have is I feel like they are trying to connect Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 together. I haven't seen it yet and will next week. I've listen to reviews and I feel if your not a kid or a Sonic fan you will never understand the Sonic universe.

I’ve never been a huge sonic fan, but when I saw THAT character in the mid credits scene, I just know that I’ll be watching the third movie on day one!
As a hardcore Sonic fan, all of the Easter eggs and references to the games (Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3, and Sonic Adventure 1 & 2) in this movie were so on point! All of the nostalgia wrapped up into this new story of how Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles meet has truly been a treat! So do yourself a favor and just go see this movie and have a blast, whether you are a fan of the franchise or not! 😁💙

I saw the movie on Thursday (opening night). This movie had the biggest reaction from the audience during a mid/post credits scene that I've ever heard. The audience excitement and cheering far exceeded any Marvel reveal when the mid-credits scene revealed its tease for the next sequel.
I grew up in the Sega Genesis days, but never owned one myself. My only familiarity with the video game franchise is occasionally playing the first two games when I would go visit one of my cousins. I watched this movie with another relative, and we had no idea why this reveal in the mid-credits scene was so significant.

I have to disagree, I believe Tom at sonic's relationship deepened here in this sequel and it was done very well. So much so he became a father figure. I do agree that it can feel like some humans in this movie is holding things back tho. As far as tails goes, he was just introduced and decleared a friend so there's still time to build on sonic and tails' friendship in the next movie.
Jeremy you, MUST watch "everything everywhere all at once" i live in NY so i saw it in IMAX during its limited run but it should be having a wide release this week. It's Possibly* the greatest film of all time ever. After watching it i dont know how dr strange 2 can live up to the name multiverse of madness. It's truly bonkers, hilarious, & both times i cried at the end 3 tears. 2 in the right, 1 in the left eye. Go watch it!

for some reason thinking of rouge in the movie design scares me but I hope we get some scenes like the island explosion or sonic vs shadow in the space station. Or even sonic using a fake emerald to use chaos control

Sonic 2 was my first video game. I was so little, my mom and dad would take turns helping me beat wing fortress and death egg zone. I remember having notes on Silver Sonic's patterns. My mom was really good in the wing fortress level.
IMO Sonic3 & Knuckles is the best one ever! The action and lore behind it is the stuff of legends.
All of the wedding stuff was really smart. My daughter and I loved the sonic stuff. My wife, who doesn't care so much about sonic, loved the silly wedding side story. It made it more enjoyable for the family as a whole and I think helps the movie reach out to a broader audience.
I actually disagree unfortunately… I think the wedding stuff was fine in the beginning/middle- though at the end it got weird and campy. It was cute for the ‘not into sonic’ mom crowd I guess - to get them into the nerddom, though I would’ve like them tighten that part up (conveniently the temple near the wedding, why the undercover bit, etc ) . The whole human ending felt contrived. Though it’s a kids movie and I’m not the same 6 year who fell in love with sonic ahah - loved the Easter eggs, battles and concepts as I will always be a Sonic Fan
I definitely agree that the wedding part could've been far more of a background event than it turned out to be in the actual film. However, I think another 20 minutes that could've been cut out and SHOULD have been cut was the weird Siberian dance-off. The two events felt more like they were there for comedy's sake rather than adding to the overall experience and plot. In my mind, a flashback to Knuckles' childhood where he could be seen surviving on his own and maturing into a hardened, bitter warrior would've been a far more effective use of those 30-40 minutes. It could've set the tone and backstory for Knuckles more than it just being explained in five minutes during the snowboarding scene.
I think that while the first movie had better pacing and usage of time, it was more of a set-up for who Sonic was and how he was going to put the real events of the second movie into motion. It being more an actionized buddy-road-trip flick really worked into its favor. However, there's only so many times you can see Sonic beat up cannon fodder robots before the suspense starts getting taken out of the fight scenes, and I think that's where the second movie really shines in its own right.
The second film did itself a favor by leaning into all of the fighting and adventure that's expected from a piece of Sonic media. Where it really struggled was when when the action stopped, because it felt kind of like a mini version of Venom 2's problem that you said perfectly in your review for that video - the movie knows how to set up a scene that's non-action, and what it wants to get to after the non-action is done, but it has no idea how to get through the non-action sequences. The only times Sonic games and shows really take a break from fighting and adventuring is to further character development or world/setting/lore development. The directors for this film just clearly didn't have that in their minds, and like you said, they had a lot of leftover human characters who were great for fleshing out the world built in the first movie, but were kind of left dangling as the second movie didn't need them anymore since, hey, the focus is now squarely on the Sonic cast rather than the human cast.
I don't think I'd watch this again by itself just to unless I could skip through the aforementioned lacking scenes such as the dance battle and the wedding scene, but I don't think I'd have a problem with watching it as a duo-marathon in preparation for the third movie's release, which I'm unbelievably excited for!
The rating I'd give this film is probably a 3.5/5 compared to the first one's 4/5. It does action very well, it's very entertaining, and Knuckles is highly enjoyable. I think that the Super Sonic scene was one of the most badass fight scenes put to the big screen. However, it does slack in some areas and it just fumbles the human side of the story.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis will always be my favorite Sonic game and, in my opinion, one of the greatest video games of all time. The soundtrack for it is also really great.

I actually like this movie as much as the first one. It's again a fun film for not only families but also for OG Sonic fans.
