A little tip that has helped me: have a zip tie handy when you take the belt off the alternator pulley. Zip tie the belt to something nearby so there's constant tension on the belt and it doesn't slip off the other pulleys.

I have the same year, just replaced the battery less than a month ago and while driving home yesterday, the bettery light came on. I'm thinking it is the alternator, had the car for 12 years and I have over 200k on it. This video helps a lot!
Thank you for this. I did my 1st alternator on my 04 Corrola just now in my driveway following this video. Just some tips for others. 1) that clip you forgot isn't that important. I couldn't get mine off my old part. Paniced and ran all over town looking for a replacement part. I learned its only "holding" the wire from getting caught in the fan or belt. So all you need to do is tie wrap it. 2) try and secure the belt so it does drop down. I ended up having my wife help me.....(you guys ever try and get your wife to help 😂😂😂😂) End of the day it's pretty easy. Without those 2 delays it would have went fast and easy
Replacing the belt with a new one is a challenge. Only because of the tight space you have to work in. A special tool is not needed to release the tension on the belt. A 1/2 drive rachet and 19 MM standard size socket will work to release the tension so the belt can come off the alternator pully. I used a short pipe for added leverage on the end of the rachet handle to make the job a bit easier. This job will take about an hour. It is relatively simple to do. Two bolts and a few wires to disconnect as well as the belt removal off the alternator pully. I have done this job on other vehicles that is way more time consuming. Side winder engines are for the most part, more difficult to work on because of the tight space between the engine and body of the vehicle. Good video, thanks for sharing.
Taking the engine cover off helps overall to see and move even though it's not directly in the way. 2 -10mm nuts. It's just a 10 second no brainer move
Thanks for the video. I wanted to point out that you don't need to rent the special belt tool. I tightly fit a normal socket into that space and just put a metal pipe on the wrench handle to extend it and give me more leverage. It didn't require as much force as I thought it would. Be careful with that belt it unraveled on me and I had to slip it back on towards the back. By far the hardest part of the job was "birthing" out the old alternator.
thank you for your video. i have been working on cars as a DIY, and i examine how should i proceed with removing the alternator on my 2004 toyota corrola ce. your video would be a big help for those who had no clue as to do the job.

@@Wandji18 I bought a remanufactured alternator and that too wasn't no good. The voltage regulator went off and they're just as expensive as a new one. So I replaced it with a new alternator - always better to get a brand new one cuz the remanufactured one blew out my alternator 100a fuse and that was just more work for me. When my alternator fuse went out everything went out - no lights nowhere, no radio, A/C not even the wipers I couldn't even get the car in gear but the engine would turn on. It's a real easy swap . If you cannot get that tool use a 19 mm or 3/4-in socket with a swivel head with two long extensions. The frame of the tensioner has a welded bolt on it . Put you socket on that a pull to you. I swapped mine out and about 45 minutes the whole job.

Hi and thanks for watching. My car broke down on the side of the road the lights were flickering and then the car just started to turn off. I had to have it towed home. I hope you are able to get yours fixed. Thanks again for watching!
Hi Eric, thanks for watching. I would first start with verifying I was on the correct bolt, there are a few in that area. If I was on the correct bolt and it wasn't releasing the tension it would make me think there is an issue with the tensioner pulley. Hope you get it fixed, let us know!
If it is a 1-time replacement, I will take it in to a 'service center' to replace the alternator and belt. At 293K trouble-free miles in a 2000 Corolla and no car payment for 15 years, it is not worth doing for myself. And it is early August so I have more months of heat and humidity in VA, so it's a good time to get it fixed. Battery Light 'on' w as the clue and the battery showed fine and the alternator starting to fail.

20 bucks in Harbor Frieght and you own it
Was the car completely dead or did it click? My 2006 Corolla is completely dead after a massive spark (i didn't hook the cables up backwards, my dad tried to direct connect it to his truck and it went completely dead after)
Hi and thanks for watching. My car broke down on the side of the road the lights were flickering and then the car just started to turn off. I had to have it towed home. I hope you are able to get yours fixed. Thanks again for watching!
What engine is this
You the man thank you
Thanks for watching.
You did your best man thanks
Thanks for watching! Appriciate that!
Thank you for the awesome video and tips
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks, it worked better that I thought
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video thank you so much
Ok what about if the tensioner does not move like it's supposed to?
Hi Eric, thanks for watching. I would first start with verifying I was on the correct bolt, there are a few in that area. If I was on the correct bolt and it wasn't releasing the tension it would make me think there is an issue with the tensioner pulley. Hope you get it fixed, let us know!
Whoa dude!! You put 250,000 miles on an alternator & a belt?
Michael Mace toyota corolla, durable
300k before mine died today
belt will most likely be fine till Spring
Thanks for the feedback. I'll let you know.
Why not tell us how long an alternator lasts that we can replace them before thay go bad instead of how to replace?
just for info, why there are 3 wires on alternator?
You can Google this, will give you a better explanation than I can, thanks for watching!
@@ToddsGarage you can try atleast
Thanks for the video Sir
Thank you appreciate you watching!
Literally takes 15 mins and serp belts are ridiculously easy to replace
Hey Todd,
Just bought an 06 corolla. After a couple days, it seems to be dead. Battery drained but is relatively new. Do you think it’s the alternator or something draining the battery?
Did it die slowly or just stop suddenly?
@@ToddsGarage died slowly.
@@harima7757 did you ever figure it out? I would get the battery tested first and go from there. Good luck
@@ToddsGarage thank you I will try. I've had a crazy week to be honest. My mom crash the day before I got stranded at the bank. And I left the car there for a night and I forgot to lock the door in the whole trying to fix it. And they stole my subwoofer lmao.
Whats the name of the tool you rented for 40 bucks?
Hi and thanks for watching! It is called a serpentine belt tool set. Thanks again for watching!
You really don't need one, just use a socket wrench and a crescent wrench, with your arm it forms the holy Trinity
where did you buy alternator from?
Hi got this one from ORielys Auto Parts, thanks for watching!
Thank you, we only saw the hood and your hand
Thanks very much 👍🫡
Do we also have to say "uhm" before every sentence?
Great job for back yard mechanic
Thanks for watching and appreciate your feedback!
I'm in a pickle. My 06 Toyota has been sitting for months. The brand new battery is completely dead, only a year, maybe a year and a half old. Im getting a new battery but just in case it's the alternator In watching this.Have no money for a mechanic so hopefully this works.I just wish there was a way to decipher if it's the battery or the alternator.
Hi and thanks for watching, some of the auto parts stores will test your battery for you so you can verify if it's good or bad.
@@ToddsGarage Thank you so much!
Thanks u just save some $$$$
Awesome glad to hear that!
Thank you buddy
Thanks for watching, I am glad the video helped.
@@ToddsGarage it did help a lot buddy I’m the one who screwed up that top screw I cross threaded and broke off I couldn’t get it to line up for the life of me ..

Thank you that help me alot thank you
Thanks for watching! Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks!!
The peice he was taking off with his head covering it is the one connector I cant seem to figure out how to get off lol
Sorry my wife usually does the video! I do talk about it towards the end of the video around 14;40. Good luck and let me know if you get it.
I had the same problem Haha
Hope you got it!
i left it connected until I got the alternator all disconnected but that, and was able to rotate it to a better viewing angle. I figured out how to remove it at that time. How anyone did it before I have no idea. Now on to the same infamous metal connector on the alternator. There is no way it's coming off the old one. I cannot image replacing it after you've re-installed the new alternator.
Ah - cold chisel and big hammer all better now.
good repair
Thank you for the feedback! Good luck on changing yours!
the rental didn't give me 19mm. Looks like I will have to improvise
Hopefully you have a 19 inch in your toolbox you can use. Good luck!
@@ToddsGarage i do not. trying to borrow from a friend and then rent it again. Car door flickering on the dashboard so much, I had to change alternator.
@@ToddsGarage i got it done. Went above and beyond and change the belt. It is great now.
@@kack7130 awesome glad to hear it!
250 thousand miles out of a belt and Alternator. Can't complain about that.
Thanks for watching! Has been a good car!
Always! I have an 05. Love it
PS. I did take the motor cover off to make more room. Only 2 nuts.
How did you know you needed to change the alternator and it wasnt the starter to be replaced?
This was a while ago but I believe in my case there was no power and I got the battery tested and it was OK. Good luck figuring out your issue!
Alternator is $200.00 today.
$139 at summit for a reman
@@nsfjojo It's a Toyota. I won't put used parts on it. The car will last the rest of my life. LOL
@@arthurh4484 lol i do and im at 300k miles
On the freeway, damn!
Luckily I had roadside assistance so the tow was free. Thanks for watching!
@@ToddsGarage thanx for responding, i have heard stories of how unforgiving bad alternators can be.
113k and need alternator and injectors!
Good luck with both projects!
