You can use this tool too tho? People don't pay concept artists to be good at painting or drawing. Its about the ideas being generated, and ai can't generate ideas. Painting or drawing is just a tool to describe your ideas, this ai is just another tool to that end.

Don't mean to be a doomsdayer... but I am a realist... and I follow cutting edge tech enthusiastically as a technical artist. This technology is going to hit global society like an astroid,... and to be honest,.. I don't think we are ready for it yet. With the way we do things now,... we will end up with a handful of ultra rich individuals ruling over everything. No middle class, no purpose aside from passion projects... because why go study for 6 years at university to laern something an AI can do 200 times more efficiently after 2 weeks? and if you doubt it,. go watch 2 minute papers youtube channel. We have AI that can control robotic arms and clean up around the house, we have ai that can do protien folding which is apparently one of the most difficult specialities in the world, and rumor has it google has an AI that can pass the touring test..... We are up the creek and people need to start taking notice.
@@brewmeup5827 Being creative is an entirely different domain then anything any AI has done so far. An ai could generate collections of words or pictures based on various equations inputs, and get really good at generating these with a high probability of effecting humans emotionally and culturally. But it couldn't generate meaning from them itself. Even in this world where AI can generate art that convincing, there will always need to be a human in the loop to realize which art is meaningful or not. This future however, will likely never come. We don't even have fully functional self driving cars. It's really easy to get 80%, and make an ai that's really impressive. That's worth a paper and worth talking about. But able to replace a human? Then things become exponentially more difficult. I suspect some AI will be able to surpass that last gap on the exponential difficulty curve, but it's not a given that technology keeps progressing at an exponential rate forever. I agree completely about tech eating the job market and ending up with a tiny elite class with all the power. Although I can see a world where technology is used to give every person the ability to create his own shelter, food, and energy. There will likely eventually be open source versions of all these ai so the owners of the proprietary versions won't have all the power. Also the problem of a few people having all the power has been around since agriculture made the city-state possible, nothing new there. Basically things are not as bleak as you seem to paint them as, and on top of that these predictions are incredibly optimistic and A-historic. @@user-fd8fe9hk9q Interesting,,, and for what its worth I hope you are correct and I am not.. although I don't think thats the case personally. Creativity is an abstract term,.. as an example you can see on 2 minute papers a series of videos where they are pitting digital agents against each other in a game of catch that is running for like.. 2 million iterations or something nuts.... and it shows why ai and machine learning is bound to overtake us.... oh this was like.. last year or something too,.. anyway,.. the reason we can't compete is due to the way it learns compared to the way we learn.... the ai starts out slow.... for like the first million iterations its just figuring out how to move around... but after about a million it suddenly figures out how to run,... then it figures out how to predict the opponent,... and the competition becomes quite interesting to watch.. but the the thing to note is.. after a few more itereations,.. one of the AI's literally glitches the program so that it stalemates its oponent..since that was the team that was trying to not get caught it wins by default,.. I can't recall the specific thing it did.. something like managed to make its way up to a corner on a ledge that was modelled into the environment and it clipped there and just stayed.... in some of the iterations before it won it was also doing things like blocking entry ways, and exploiting other glitches to get a head start on the other team of agents... That is creativity.... hell that is more creative than what half the people I know could come up with... That is the power of AI,.. it can literally run simulations against a copy of itself millions of times to try out every possible variable. There is a big difference between a computer and a machine learning ai.... and there is not as much of a difference between creativity and crunching numbers,.. thats why you can catagorize almost every story ever made into one of 7 plot lines.... ... about the plateau,.. the thing is... we aren't at the end of the industrial boom anymore,.. we are actually at the start of a trifecta of emerging tech that is going to trigger the next technological revolution. Those are,.. yes AI,... Which due to machine learning is essentially guarenteed to outperform people in almost every single way given enough time. Genetic editing.... think krispr,.... and virtual reality. there are quite a few reports and papers from some fairly on the ball people who discuss how these are already engrained in our lives and will force our species to change how our society is set up for the first real time in thousands of years... from what you are saying it sounds like you are thinking of AI as a powerful GPU or CPU.. but its a completely different beast. So far all AI is specialized... but once we cross that line of a matured general intelligence AI... we are out competed.... We simply do no thave the cognative ability to keep up with that type of intelligence. mainly because we can't use machine learning... at the same time I don't think its a horrible fate... if you think about it... AI is a new type of life,... the collective offspring of the human species,.... and personally I hope it does develop into a great intelligence capabale of seeing far beyond what we can see... or maybe we will merge.. hard to say exactly.. but one thing I can feel pretty certain about... is that if we survive another 50 years.... the world will be vastly different in large part due to AI.
Ai created a massive artblock for me. It made me realize I could be useless and that I could never beat ai for art. That I can no longer strive for being the best, because Ai will just always be better. I enjoyed art to learn techniques and get better, but it makes me genuinely sad this see a piece of art created in seconds like this. And how already it's being used in so many places and filling up my social media. It makes me sad
Humans created machines that could lift many tons a long time ago, yet powerlifter still try to lift as much as possible. Trains could run fastest than a human, yet we still celebrate the worlds fastest. AI can generate paintings convincingly and in large numbers, yet are similarly without soul. As an artist you should ask yourself, if you had an assistant you told your ideas to, who drew and painted everything for you on your command, should the assistant get the credit for being the artist? Of course not. Very few people, even when given the most effective assistant possible, would be abe to create a powerful work of art. The work and styles of concept artist like H Giger or Moebius wouldnt exist without them even if an AI was generated their images for them. Thats the difference between an artist and a draughtsman

@@Moctop Craftsmen executing other people's vision are surely valuable, but there is a distinct difference between that job and the job of the person coming up with the idea. Ideas are a dime a dozen, good ideas are rare. Just like people who draw are a dime a dozen, people who are genuinely skilled at their craft are rare. I wasn't saying one is less or more valuable, just that there is a difference, and that ai doesn't do what artists do. And honestly doesn't yet hold a candle to true Craftsmen. Despite how hard I try to remain optimistic, it’s pretty stressful watching AI progress as a young 3D artist. I quite honestly can’t imagine life being worth living for me if the visual art industry is automated. It’s difficult not to get emotional about it because Im so passionate about my career and one day, all the work I put in/experience I have could mean essentially nothing. I always question “just why would you replace artists?” because it seems a bit evil on the surface. Artists typically love what they do and find fulfillment from their work. This isn’t hamburger flipping. Additionally, artists are already constantly shamed for all their quirks but only accepted because their skills prove useful to many businesses who rely on their creative talent. I cant imagine how poorly artists would be treated by the business class if their skills served no monetary value. I’d rather be f&@king dead than work a boring, awful job for decades just because society hasn’t figured out how to automate it yet. The only thing that keeps me optimistic is that I love what I do so much I shouldn’t really care if a robot can do it better than me. I do it because it brings me peace and calms my mind. It’s no secret, art is therapy for many artists. I also hope people love supporting other people and don’t care as much about supporting robots. Handmade clothing and jewelry still exists despite much of the field being automated so that’s somewhat promising. So hopefully when all digital art can be automated, our society will find a way to value and support digital artists. Idk. I’m always cautious to publicly comment on the topic because it’s so emotionally charged, I’m afraid I’ll change my mind tomorrow. Nonetheless, this is how I often feel about it when my anxiety goes through the roof. I hope my perspective serves some purpose other than to be mocked 😅 If so, I'll make a video about it to inspire digital artists to keep pursuing their dreams. The script is already written haha
Honestly as someone who took the leap from working a factory job to studying and putting thousands of hours into this it's just.. I dunno. you put it into good words. Why live if trying to make something of my life for once just got obliterated?
I've talked to a bunch of people in the industry about it and the opinions seem pretty consistent all across the board, you wont have to worry about AI replacing us anytime soon. As mentioned in the video if you observe ai images they dont really look defined, they just kind of resemble things we know so you could never use them for any other purpose then to look interesting. From there it's our job as artists to make sense of them if we want to use them as a tool. I'm pretty much just repeating the points from the video but as long as you practice your fundamentals and always keep pushing your skills you wont have to worry about being replaced anytime soon. As soon as AI will be able to pump out fully playable and interesting games by just typing a prompt, that's when we might be fucked lol

@@morphice18 Personally, I think it’s a bit too hopeful to believe AI won’t become more capable than human artists at some point. AI Art went from a laughable toddler level to beginner concept artist level in just a few years. While I dont believe it will replace all artists and their jobs, it will ultimately be a unique/rare decision to choose to hire human concept artists at some point (like 20-30 yrs from now). So only the best of the best will make a living as a concept artists. Which in reality, is kinda how it already is anyways lol
@@FemtoKitten Exactly. That’s why I want to speak on this in a video. I’m doing a bit of “soul searching” if you will because of the AI Art right now as it threatens my entire career. But I do think there is a very healthy and positive way we as artists can cope with this as AI continues to improve. I’m not the type to subscribe to cliche “everything will be okay” sugar-coated messages, but I don’t think the future for artists has to be AS dark as we currently picture it.

@@NguyenQuang-tm3ou I understand what you mean but I think you missed my point. Whether you adapt your work to it or not your employer will still make the decision to hire you, keep you, or not. If they are a starting studio there is a high chance they will but existing ones who already have artists most likely won't hire more than they need to. But as an independent artist, like myself, who works with private clients, it's a different story.
I have been testing MidJourney for about two weeks now to the extent that I have been put into the ''relax'' mode (on the "unlimited" plan). I've been perfecting my art skills for about 12 years now so when I first saw the results this AI is throwing out I was afraid, It is certain that many of the smaller jobs we as painter used to get as for example to draw a D&D party are gonna be out. As this technology gets better every month (this goes really fast months not years) we are going to see entry level art skills disappear. People are gonna be able to do it by themselves. We have to face the possibility that this is industry changing and the process of art creation is never gonna be the same. I compare this to the invention of photography, when it was first introduced people thought painting was going also disappear, but to the surprise of everyone painting evolved integrating photography as a part of the process and also found ways to differentiate it from photography. As photography raises in popularity is the point when more abstract and shape design paintings start to appear. Today I stand positive about AI, I have seen that people without art skills are not a successful creating interesting and pleasing images, most non artistic minded people tend to create very generic looking art with this AI. While experienced painters already know where they are going. Being generic is it's biggest struggle right now . Most art coming out of it has a very obvious digital/AI look (O though this can rapidly change from on day to the next). In my opinion this is gonna re valuate traditional art, painted in a canvas or in peace of paper, as for digital, it will go under heavy changes. So embrace yourselves and fasten your seat belts my fellow artist. This is gonna be a revolution as big as Photography.
Two more thing I didn't mention. The amount of art coming out by second from this AI's is incredible. We could flood Art Station in a Week. In a week we could post more art that the amount it has been upload to this point. You can make a complete portfolio in an hour. And as this technology creates more define characters and reasonable looking buildings it's gonna be really difficult to differentiate it from "real art". I wonder how new talent is gonna be recruited in company and how are they gonna be evaluated. On a even grimmer note. Now an Art director can create a body of work comparable to the size of a full concept art team. The speed increase even with over paints and photobashing is incredible. And being able to use seeds and reference images for the AI makes it really consistent in it's output. There is so much to be said. If some reed this whole rant, you are a hero.
Yeah I agree. This technology has been shooting my anxiety through the roof as it’s somewhat heartbreaking to see AI pump pieces out that so many people have worked their whole lives to do themselves. I believe artists will find a way to remain necessary and relevant, however, there’s certainly going to be some rough patches to endure due to this technology. I don’t want to be pessimistic, though I also shy away from being naive. I don’t believe the “it’s just gonna be used as another tool” argument for too long. Maybe for now. But 10 years from now? 30 years from now? As soon as businesses can’t cut labor costs, they’ll go right ahead and do it. So I wouldn’t count on “it’s just another tool” for too long. Lol
My gut feeling at the moment - for now it's just another tool - but with a difference, because each time you use it you are effectively teaching it to replace you. Clients can type sentences too and pretty soon they really will be able to generate hundreds of variations on the perfect bespoke piece with a click of a button. We are currently enabling that scenario to play out. Fine, call me old fashioned but I like getting paid to draw stuff. 😆
AI can only generate images based on statistical likelihood of images that already exist being described similarly. What an artist should be doing is re-contextualizing the problem to create new ways of looking at it, new ways of interpreting the world. Generating new meanig entirely.

@@boxysav What Im describing is not a system that can be automated. What Im describing is completely anti-systematic by nature. Even if the ai gets incredibly good at what it does, it wont be able to do things its not programmed to do, and cant be programmed to do. Although yes many things will be automated or at least partially automated and that will effect the world in various negative and positive ways.

It’s the same end game as a computer beating a chess master or churning out portraits which are indistinguishable from real people or deep fakes. True it’s not that now, but I think it’ll get there in time. I guess in the short term if it helps us meet impossible deadlines then we have a reason to justify usage, but maybe we’d be better off just saying ‘that’s an unrealistic deadline.’ 😆

As an artist I dont care whether the art is drawn and painted by me or someone else, or a robot. I want the art to exist in the way I want it to exist. If an AI makes my workflow faster then great, but I fail to see how it competes with me as an artist. Its like photobashing with someone else's art. Generally all this ai stuff makes me kinda sad as every day dead internet theory gets closer and closer to be a reality.
It's not though. With photobashing you are literally using someone elses work. The AI is trained on this art, but makes its own stuff from scratch "inspired" by it...just like any artist.

Right now, AI art generation is iterated on art made by people. What happens at the point that there is more AI art out there than human art and the AI starts iterating on AI art? Will art start to become homogenized?
You don't have to wait, current AI art looks sometimes very visually pleasing but also for the most part incredibly generic. And it couldn't be any other way, while these algorithms do not simply collate images, they are little more than high skill forgers/imitators. If AI art continues improving and becomes capable of being sufficiently sophisticated to replace the output of designers/concept artists with some guy writing some prompt lines, there's no way industry will not use it to replace human labor, and we'll come to the point that AI will in time have churned out way more artwork than any human could realistically. That, as you said, will be the point when AIs will likely begin to just use other AI art as reference, beginning and endless cycle of output with copy-pasted style. If you think that current pop culture is somewhat stale and repetitive, the current state of affairs won't hold a candle to the cultural human centipede that an AI dominated culture would probably look like. I just hope that this will not discourage people from pursuing art on their own terms, without or with limited AI aid, be it traditional or digital art, but the broad landscape looks bleak to me.
This is amazing but I’m worried about the future of concept art in terms of work and skill levels. You don’t have to be a really skilled artist to type in some words and can easily paint over a generated piece.
Well, those people that utilize it would struggle A LOT if they have to do anything traditional or hadn drawn which some game studios almost require, riot games being one of them.
@@thisismyalias Same thing can still be said about those who use a computer to make art. It just depends upon how you use it. I know of a few artists who only do photobashing, they don't know how to even draw a simple box. because of this, they struggle to implement photobashing in a cohesive manner. Thus their image looks, stiff and fake because the lighting of the seperate images are completely different.
One analogy I'd give as an amatuaer musician is this: With digital audio workstations (DAWs, which can be thought of like Photoshop or Illustrator for music), the human errors can easily be corrected. For example, if the drummer goes off beat on a particular snare hit, one can drag the snare and 'snap' it back into beat. And with virtual instruments, you can get high quality sounds without actually having to play the instruments or even have them phisically. All this power enables one to produce music which is really slick, shiny, with every note perfectly tuned and falling on the precise beat. Well, it turns out, that overtime humans find such "perfect" music boring and even at some level, tiring. So the digital musicians go to great lengths to introduce 'noise' into the system, making notes fall off-beat, and all other tricks required to mimic a normal human performance with all it's flaws. Who knows once we are inundated with AI art, at some deep level, we may have a similar reaction !
This is not how AI works. AI quite literally operates on approval. If AI music were to become a trend and people would grow bored with it it could introduce that error deliberately, just to gain more approval. All AI does is "categorize".
As someone who has some technical knowledge about deep learning, these kinds of systems, while really impressive, all it does is taking information and spitting out variations of it, we are far from actually generating ideas, and this is where the artist must come in. Diffusion models will replace many illustrators but the most creative ones. For concept artists it can be a wonderful tool.
As someone who who isn’t a painter. This tool made me appreciate art even more when i started searching for different artists and the history of art. This tool is also beneficial for me as my ideas will be very hard to do in my industry which will take months or years to do and huge budgets. I have suffered from expressing my creativity due to the restrictions that i have in my job. And this certainly will make me express more but as you said for the long term I’m not sure what it will do me mentally.
I have a few predictions 1- AI will speed up art ideation. Art will therefore be much quicker to produce. If this becomes the norm, perhaps expect shorter deadlines, or higher quantity of art to be expected, at least for the early phase in production. More art produced at the same level of work. 2- Future games might be bigger in scope, especially AAA games. More locations and environments, more costumes, more weapons, more everything because it is easier to generate art to clean up and build on top of. 3- Because 2d art will be quicker to produce, the 3d department might become a bottleneck. AAA game studios might need more 3d artists, unless 2d artists generalize or a good 3d AI comes as well. Or less 2d artists are needed. 4- Beginners could fake fundamental skills by being lucky on an AI generation to paint on top of. Basically making it more difficult to find good artists to hire that actually know how to design and render (still necessary even with AI). Therefore your work experience will become more important for getting hired. Beginner artists will have a harder time getting noticed if they are not better than AI. 5- In the far future we might have really good 2d and 3d AI's. Instead of having 2d and 3d artists, both jobs could be done by one person. Generate 2d, fix in photoshop, generate 3d, fix in 3d software. It becomes conceivable for a single person to do. Generalizing will therefore be more important in the future. 6-At the very least, it will become easier and less time consuming to produce certain kinds of textures for painting and 3d, especially anything that is random, organic, time consuming, and doesn't require a lot of fixing, like rocks, clouds, mountains, landscape stuff, etc. I am not sure about any of these, but its something to think about :)
As a student in the media field, AI Art and Edits like those both scare and immensely hype me at the same time From an engineering standpoint it is just amazing what we will be able to do with this Technology in a few years
Though initially I was looking forward to it, since I expected AI to reduce the amount of manual labor, I am currently in the phase of "shock", because the results equilibrate the technical aspects between an amateur and professional so much. I try to figure out If the decades of learning art were wasted or not, since the results are fantastic, no matter how much art skill the person has who types in the text. I should know that all the craft I have acquired is absolutely not in vain. Furthermore, I have a clear vision of what I want and how to use my experience in combination with the AI. In fact, it puts me more into the seat of a director and allows me to create bigger worlds and projects. But seeing the internet flooded with AI generated art, it makes me a little worried if the effort I put in is noticed. I think it will be the same as photobashing. Currently, we are flashed by the impact of it, but after some time the style might get repetitive. For me personally, I have to think more like a businessman and less like a craftsman. Develop a narrative, animation, a USP, something that is on the next highest meta level. I feel most artists are very focussed on the craftsmanship and because of that it stings a lot.
It's seems like a great tool especially if you're a novel writer who need something like a landscape or setting illustration However, you can't get the setting exactly like what you want and it's a problem especially if your story needs a really specific setting But it's good enough for a story and I guess I have to compete with ai to be a novel illustrator now Or I can use the ai illustration as the base of my illustration and then I'll add details or something
This is insane, I'm very worried for all the concept artists out there, how do you compete against an AI that can produce hundreds of variations of an idea? On the other hand this could prove very useful for traditional painters. Idk what to think, new tech is always scary at first but in the end people learn to embrace it and new things develop from there.
The best thing to do if you’re an independent is find a way where you don’t have to compete with AI. Painters don’t compete directly with photographers, yet photographers have an unfair advantage to snap tens of photos in literally seconds. Imo, it’s naive to believe this technology won’t eventually be just as capable as the average concept artist as it went from chicken scratch bullshit to shockingly decent art in just 2 years. As it goes for corporate jobs, however, I don’t see a bright future for most concept artists unfortunately. I too am deeply concerned about that. More so than many concept artists I’ve spoke with.
Why do you assume the concept artist will have to compete with AI? Why not embrace the AI tools that will make the concept artist even faster and better at their job.
@@danielnewton2390 I don't think concept artist should try to compete with AI as it's an impossible task. However, I am also a bit frustrated with the "just use it as a tool" narrative right now. I was told by someone it's my "responsibility as an artist" to start using this AI. But at this point, the AI could change our workflow so much it's almost a different craft entirely. I understand using it as a tool, but I have little to no interest drawing like a toddler on Nvidia Canvas to let the ai do all the fun work and spit out a beautiful image. Was it the painters responsibility to become a photographer? That's ridiculous. They fell in love with painting, not photography and we respect that. Sure, we'll be expected to use such tech when we're hired as concept artists, but adopting it just for the sake of earning money is missing the point of our dream jobs. Artist want to perform their craft passionately and get paid to do so. If the jobs become just "DALL-E made this image. Please move the waterfall 10 pixels to the left", it's not really fun, creative, and interesting anymore. To many artists, this doesn't sound like the craft they fell in love with. So we'll have to accept these jobs just to get by, not because we love them. I understand we're not quite there (yet), but you can see how it's concerning to those of us who poured our hearts and souls into the digital art career space.
On a brighter note: I can foresee this leading to some jobs that aren't so bad, but I'm not sure how long that will last. And no one can be certain so we're all naturally looking out for ourselves incase AI is a threat to our jobs.
When I saw someone type in a sentence to describe the art they wanted to see and it being rendered by the A.I. The first thing I thought was "Although it looks nice, it can be used as a starting point to toss some ideas around into it before committing to something." Yes some of the art the A.I makes will be good as is for some. However, what's great is that by typing in the sentence into the A.I and getting a result. It gives both you and/or someone else a starting point to talk about what vision they have. If I could make something tangible that everyone could see almost instantly and have a talking point without trying to think up something by what they said, I'd take that choice. I've made things exactly how someone described it and sometimes they say it didn't hit the mark at all. Yes, the A.I. generated art can also not hit the mark. However, since it's generated quick and can be tweaked quick. It allows us to communicate the vision better.
Excellent video! Made me realize that AI art is very thought provoking. That statement at the end about having ideas, but too high of a standard and not enough time to execute all such ideas, was powerful.
This is only the beginning of the death of the concept artist/visdev artist profession, I'm calling it. Software houses and corps in general will start to use simple prompts even with characters at some point, saving money and cutting budget. Maybe this will also be applied to indie companies, but with a minor impact.
If you define yourself as a meat machine that spits out paintings based on exact specifications you might be right. Fortunately developing products is not that simple. Get involved in the process early. Develop ideas and concepts that influence the end product. For a very long time AI art will aid you in that process by steering you in the right direction quickly (The same way 3D and photobashing to today). To generate a finished product that fits the purpose exactly, heavy human influence will still be required
@@pidoubleju refining AI products might still be required (as it is now with people who use AI as a base), but if we have come to this result in a bunch of years, what stops AI development from producing a sheet of 100 different concepts of the same character in a couple of minutes? This should scare us.
If this makes you fell better. 3d animation motion capture have been there for years and hasn't replaced hand key animation yet. Hell raw motion capture animations looks very bad without hand cleaning from an animator. Even with expensive suit requires hell amount of hand cleaning

Dude, this is the beginning of holodecks. If this can get implemented into 3D modeling how long until you can put on a Oculus and just say where you want to go and the headset creates it in a 3D space.
A very long time, possibly never. Things become more complex exponentially, entropy sets it, and the task becomes practically unfeasible although theoretically possible

@@Moctop I'm mostly thinking about models at a high enough level of quality that they are usable in the industry. I think ai will be able to generate models that look somewhat like their supposed to, and maybe people will be able to incorporate that into their workflow, but ai won't become the work flow anytime soon. Personally I wouldn't use it even as a starting place for a sculpt since the getting the block out just right is so important.

When people ask if this is a deathblow to designers, and a lot of content creators produce the same optimistic answer (which I find suspicious as a cynic who believes anyone making money from ad revenues has their vested interests) I prefer to say YES it is/will be a death blow to designers.
I both excited and afraid. AI art could spark our creativity and like you said it could really improve our time when making a piece. But at the same time, I got this feeling of looming danger of unemployment LOL
Problem with todays world is that it seems imposible to create Artist like Beksiński, Kossak or Giger . Copy & Paste culture is a main thing in art today. Everything looks same. Nobody have Time to dig deep . Taking into consideration what i said before - are you artist or tool operator? Are you creating or operating? Where is the source of your inspiration - internal or extrenal?
Most are slow machines. And now, where they are seeing fast machines they're scared. It's all about being an employable machine than about being a creator who sees the possiblities of the upcoming technologies in helping them creating their own worlds. Because there are no own worlds inside! :D
My brain nearly exploded. I had hit a blockage and was having trouble feeling inspired, but just 2 days with Midjourney and my muse had woken up big time. I dont see it as a final thing but as a tool to use and expand or even to smash out ideas and then go on to create my own art from the inspiration.
With AI I feel as if art will lose all meaning to the point where it's not even worth making anymore, other than for the pursuit of the craft. In terms of the industry, I'd say individual artists will be squashed between the cogs of an uncaring new-age corporate machine trying to meet demands. Heck, even individual artists work will become meaningless due to the sheer quantity of it all.
Why would any of that happen? Art is a quality game not a quantity game. It doesn't matter if you 1000x the amount of art being made, the demand stays the same and only those few that meet the demand are reproduced and rewarded. 99.99% of art on the internet is almost completely ignored already. You also seem to confuse the role of the artist with that of the draughtsman. The artists comes up with the idea, the draughtsman executes the idea in a given medium.
@@user-fd8fe9hk9q Well, Midjourney can create really looking good landscapes in minutes, no artists can do that, you can then use those pictures to create landscapes for your game or movie or whatever. At this point, we have remove one person from the equation, aka cut costs, sadly this is the reality of companies.
Looking forward to using tools like this for photo bashing. I spend a lot of time taking photos and searching for photos and I could see this helping me speed up my workflow.
What I could imagine is that in the future there might also be some backlash against AI-created art and that a subsection of customers would employ a contract that stipulates that the commissioned work must not be based on or have used AI-generated content in its creation, in order to preserve the spirit of originality. All customers? Surely not. A majority of them? Unlikely. But I guess that "AI-free" might in a few years even become a seal of quality to some who will be fed up with the (almost unavoidable) flood of AI content to come.
I think it's a great tool to begin to visualize an idea, a project, especially if you're not very good at concept art yet, I think in the future there will be code or prompt artists, but not yet at the moment, if you look closely at the results, certain recurring patterns can already be seen in these works. but it is certainly a useful tool to visualize your ideas, inspire you and above all work faster. the problem with technology is not keeping up with it, we have to use it to our benefit.
A downside I haven't seen mentioned yet is how these kinds of tech developments will impact our imagination. For example, if an AI is creating real-time images for you based off an audio book, you're no longer using your own imagination. Sort of like how Siri and other voice-assistants destroyed inquisitive talk. No longer do people need to ponder or recall certain events when the answer is a simple voice command away. I fear AI technology is progressing faster than our ability to foresee potential consequences. A future generation may be on the horizon that would barely need to use their imagination for anything, which could jeopardize their ability to reason and/or think abstractly.
I also live from art. I see many artists worried about being replaced by machines. I feel incredibly optimistic about the new aesthetic possibilities for visual art or even music that this brings. Who knows what kind of cooperation or merger between us and the machines may exist relatively soon that broadens our spiritual horizon, our collective imagination, our ability to think new horizons... this excites me and gives me faith.
I agree with William on this. Where I think AI is problem is when an AI "artist" wins a competition with other artists. AI Art competitions should be a separate category, so people can prompt away with each other.
It's just another tool us Artists can use. Everyone thought using 3D software was going to be the death of Vis Dev and Concept art - but it's just allowed us to do stuff quicker, and in a lot of instances create better and more accurate work. I can totally imagine using this type of AI system for idea generation, taking some outputs and fully fleshing those ideas out to a much more nuanced and thoughtful design. It could be a fantastic tool to ignite our imaginations when we are struggling with a blank canvas.
3D software introduced completely new techniques that can't be put onto a 2D surface, hence 3D artists were needed. Concept art just needs rough concepts. Concepts that anyone can get by just writing a few words into an AI prompt.
As if this industry was not ALREADY competitive and saturated enough. Now we have to compete with lifeless bots. Great. I guess there is a positive way to look at it, though.
What do I think about it? hmm... well I think anyone who believes this will evolve to become a great basemesh generator for blender... or starter scaffold for any variety of other artistic mediums, has not really thought into where this is all leading very well. The rate of AI and Machinelearning development is borderline scary... at this stage we can't be more than a few years to a decade at the max, away from an general intelligence AI that can master extremely high quality artwork, scientific development, design, management, social policy, teaching, medical services, anddd you could add just about any job type onto this sentance.... So,.... the better question to ask would be...... How are we going to make the world work,.. How will we structure our societies, and how are we going to make a living,.. when an AI can do 99.99% of things better than we can, This is going to break society on a global level, and there don't seem to be many poeple bringing this up... but hey... maybe AI wil be able to solve that issue for us too ey? It is scary as hell, but also exciting as hell. But I do think that people need to start pushing this above topic out for discussion and consideration as much as possible
But also, you have to think that people who develop this, must know this, the products that are created are created for us, the humans, a machine has no use for clothes or a hand bag, if there are no consumers it will be virtually useless to have an AI generating hand bags or some other things. hopefully AI will not lead to a tecnocratic society where only the super wealthy survive, but instead where we as people can work less, and enjoy LIFE.
As a musical artist who is just establishing a UA-cam channel, AI art is a huge plus for me. I can generate images to go along with my music on a budget that I wouldn't insult a real human with. But I think that if I'm successful I will want to start working with human artists who can understand the stories behind my music and create compelling visual art that enhances the story.
As an artist I'm flabbergasted some people are actually glad with this development. AI is an aggregate - worse yet, it's an aggregate of content taken straight from whatever pool was fed into it. If this workflow of "using AI generated art" as a basis to expand upon becomes a thing creativity goes straight out of the window. No more new angles; just rehashing the same pool of images to create very similar looking results. But it will be blazing fast and cost efficient, so lots of digital artist will be cut out of the production process. And for what purpose? Exactly. To feed those at the top of the chain. Long live capitalism!
AI is an infinite photo-bashing images database,because the AI needs those hundreds/thousands of millions images to create. It's like filtering photos by name from your images organizer but the source of photos is infinite and it gets things spot on everytime.
My only concern is that which language is the most efficient and intelligible to express thoughts. Because English doesn't do it justice and has a lot of limitations.
You start with quantity & then quality will emerge from it. With AI you can make 50 moodboards & overpaint the best 10. & those best will shift you in a direction you couldn’t imagine. Since we are all biased in our compositions & approach. It’s a fresh wind of inspiration & a tool indeed. Also it helps a lot with starting a story when you only have a rough idea. So yeah I’m all in!
This is HUGE for the film and TV industry. At present, it may not totally replace concept artists but just imagine you’re a production designer…..instead of hiring an artist on big wages for weeks or months, you can now just type a few words and generate hundreds of thumbnails for your director to view. Only much later will a concept artist be brought in to finalise an idea….if at all! No doubt we’ll also get to a point where AI will be able produce 3 dimensional concepts as well. Given the ever increasing budgets for film and TV, this is definitely the future, as the AI becomes ever more powerful.
i guess one of the things one could do to is put themselves in the shoes of the leadership of a company and at the same time, the customer, because, in all honesty, the first in general, will "always" go for the most cost benefit, and the latter, at a mass scale, don't necessarily "care" as long it creates some emotional impact... so, we got the clear difference between "the enjoyment of the process" versus the results the question that "if it is art" is almost irrelevant at this point, because, no matter the semantics, it is a tool with incredible capability, and again, i guess directors in general, and the public will not care the name of "the thing" if it can deliver the goods no matter the "poetry" involved, the economics of it has the upper hand...in a industry level, of course the thing is how this will affect the ecosystem between already established professionals and those students who want a piece of the cake...because, as much as it's nice to say that art is competition against oneself, everybody have bills to pay and don't want to die of hunger, so literally anybody else that is not *you", is a competition
Your comparison of AI art to photobashing is pointless. This was never about the tool, AI is not a tool, it’s a human replacement. A new tool requires new training, new people, creates new opportunities, making more new jobs. Ai was designed to reduce employment, cut down budget, slash the number and accumulate capital. While a tool transfer opportunities from one person to another, AI makes what could become everyone’s wealth die in the top few’s pockets. Artist is a highly comprehensive job, and if that could be replaced completely by AI, then virtually every job can. This is not a sign or problem just for the artists, it is a problem for everyone. Not to mention the incredibly unethical practices of AI’s Essenes, virtually cutting up pieces of existing art and pasting them together by mass user data mining. Artist should be paid for their art to be used in AI, and they should have the choice to opt out of it.
Exactly! I've been saying this for a decade, but people just are too dumb to realize the impact of technological advancements until FINALLY it is too late. AI is a tool that will be used to further divide capital. We already live in a world where over half the population lives in extreme poverty. Take for example India: one of the biggest food exporting countries in the world, while having one of the highest rates of starvation. Why? Because capitalism functions this way: exploit the weak to feed the already powerful. AI is going to make a lot of people obsolete and put them into poverty, just to faciliate even more luxery for those at the top. It's not that the technology itself is evil either; it is that we live in a society that handsomely rewards using it for malicious purposes.
In only 4 months since this has been posted an insane amount of progress was made in AI art. Stable Diffusion is helping out with this, you should really check out the Stable Diffusion powered Blender addon "Dream Textures". Hoping you can provide an update sometime!
Artists will surely find something new to do, as that is what they take pride in- creating something that does not exist. Just like when the camera was invented, artists slowly lost meaning in drawing super realistic art. Then the Impressionism movement started which quenched their thirst. As an art form which is being worshipped today, which redefined the meaning of art, even impressionism received backlash at first from many artists, just like you said about photobashing. So definitely something new is going to come, the world will keep changing, however I am not sure how nicely we would accept it. I still can't accept photobashing for some reason.
You hear this sentiment echoed on all AI related topics, but it completely foregoes the way the tool works. AI is adaptable. You take a picture and it abides by its inherent properties. Like you mention realism. You use AI and there is no single mold it cannot fit to. Realism, surrealism, cubism. Everything. AI is not a tool to a solution, it IS the solution. You are a human - you function similarly; you adapt. That is what causes you to claim you will "just try something that does not exist"; but what keeps AI from doing the exact same thing? AI has the potential to make everyone in every single field obsolete given enough time.
I'm not sure you've quite grasped the full extent of AI. It will replace all craft but the top tier talent which will simply tweak it. Eventually those will be replaced as well, as will other jobs. Until then, craftsmen will start disappearing, and almost only actual artists will remain. Those with ideas, able to tie things together and figure out novel ways of creating never before seen things with major impact will still have a job in the coming years. But craftsmen, the vast majority of people in film and games which we refer to as artists, will disappear. Large companies will suffer, as they mostly rely on their financial strength and numbers to create high quality content with craftsmen, thus gaining a market edge. A true artist, or two, will eventually be able to create fresh and compelling experiences in no time from their basement and release them globally. Right now there are machine learning algos yet unreleased to the public which are able to animate, rig, code, write copy and control machinery. They will become more capable and not too long in the future will start being developed to develop other more efficient machine learning algos. It could be an amazing future for all, but only if we start looking at society differently, restructuring it to have AI serve the needs of the.majority rather than the few.
For AI to benefit humankind we would have to get rid of capitalism. Capitalism rewards exploiting the weak. Unfortunately capitalism VERY AGGRESSIVELY reinforces its own status quo; the means are in the hands of the few, which can be used to suppress the demands of the many.
Could this AI be used to design models for 3D printing? Using the same input techniques, I imagine it could produce an .stl file that could be sent to a printer.

Art has always been about the idea. You still do that with this. Its really handy for art directors who spend most of their time in meetings with little left for sketching themselves. They could do an hour or two of AI sketches to support ideas.
In short- we need to think of ourselves as music producers not guitars players. Most music producers aren’t masters of anything - but know their way around many different instruments and genres. Further more a concept artist myself here’s my two cents - as a community we have to start becoming more aware of the ‘meta’ of how our art is interpreted in the modern world. Every medium of art has a certain ‘lean’ in the way that you can push and present the medium and have it be the most impressive. It’s going to be more important now as artists to begin to clearly advertise what we are ‘getting at’ with in a given style that we are using. This will make us much more getable to the masses and will help us always stand out from Ai. We need to emphasize the human elements of art. Kim Jung Gi is a perfect example. He’s not the best artist at anything. (His drawings are busy and splotchy as shit let’s be honest). But he’s very transparent about ‘his thing’ and it becomes a performance to watch him draw. Just as we do not judge the violins in a pop song in the same way as we do an individual violinist, so we as artists must start to carve out these smaller domains of performative expression. Smaller more potent creative play spaces. And yes - this is way easier to do In traditional mediums. OR - join forces with the AI’s. Lastly- we need to expand our skillsets such that a team of 10 artists could make a very cool stylized little video game - with a very unique human centric style. Ori and the Will O wisps comes to mind. In short- we need to think of ourselves as music producers not guitars players anymore. Etc etc.
if this only cuts out a few jobs of concept artists, it's gonna make an already very difficult field even more difficult to get into. There will be an even higher gate of entry to get into. And while yes there is need for artists and likely always will be, There is still the factor of how many of one's own resources can a person afford to put in their skills, years of experience, blood sweat etc. before they have to 'get a regular job.' and yes, always the case with art. there's risks for such a job, but if certain types of concept artists are no longer needed (cause AI can do it faster even though probably not better), it's gonna have an effect on other things.
I think that people saying this is end of art being drawn by people are getting a little ahead of themselves. It can do very interesting things that are great for fantasy, scifi, and even surreal genres. It does environments pretty well good, but it works with a broad brush. It also cannot handle people super well and frankly, it doesn't do minute adjustments at all. It's still an all or nothing program. You'll always need a person to get *exactly* what you need. What I think it WILL do is cut down on amount of nonsense that concept artists are hired to do. Why spend your days concepting 1000 crates when you can just have a machine do it and you can focus on the more important stuff?

See.. this to me screams YES. Ive always been interested in art and never really took the big time to get into it until recently, and even then I always lack motivation or simply dont have enough time. Im really good with ideas and imagination, to the point i could describe you a scene in amazing detail (Without sounding too modest) and not being able to produce that is.. upsetting to say the least. If the prompt is this advanced.. for someone like me its like, bringing your imagination to life almost. If i could afford it I'd totally go for the software, I think its amazing! (I do however understand how fustraiting it must be for young and experienced artists who will spend hours coming up with something that the AI can do in minutes... for me personally, I want it bad :c)
While I don't think AI will replace artists, it sure will replace stuff like stock photography, simply because it's free and allow getting images from very precise prompt, something you cannot get from stock photos. People will hire less professional photographer, because the AI is enough. I think Imagen and DALL-E 2 produce much more convincing result than Midjourney, and are actual viable alternative to stock images.

i agree with everything you said there.. and i also think AI has a LONG way to go before it even steps close to the creativity of a human mind. you need to keep feeding it key words for it to udnerstand what's in your head, and sometimes it gets close, but not enough. i agree it is a powerful tool for ideas, colors, compositions, but it won't be able to produce all of the final images we need :) and that's where the humans take back the reigns yeehaw
Leaning into any tool and using it as a crutch is always bad for your personal development as artists. I can see this being a nice thumbnail idea generator for more experienced artists that already have good fundamental skills. But for more junior artists it can be pretty bad as you lean more into midjourney or other AI generator to do big chunck of the work for you. Rather than spend the time to learn those skills yourself. Same goes with photobashing i´ve seen a heck of a lot more bad photobashing than good one. But that´s what happens when you focus more on the details and presentation rather than the idea and storytelling.
It is kinda like magic. So many possibilities and mostly it surprises me with how good it is! I too fear the downsides. But part of me wonders if actual paintings might go up in value as they are really "real" things made by hand and hence rare and unique... people might value the objects themselves more? I have a similar thing with film photography... if I see an amazing old hand printed b&w photo from actual film, and the lighting and image is amazing I just have more respect for the photographer as you know it hasn't been digitally manipulated compared to a thousand great photos online and hence has more value somehow to me. But it might almost shift these analogue formats into being seen as "antiques"... still rare and valuable but from another era... the current one is about to be flooded by millions of mind-blowing images... and I'm not sure how its all gonna work out!
This is quite exciting for me. If ai art keeps progressing then I may be able to bring some of my larger ideas to life without relying on a studio full of people or a lifetime spent on one project. I believe this would open up a world of new possibilities for the individual artist.
I think they all need to be harassed and bullied until they are forced to either quit or platforms ban all of them unless theh mention unoriginal computer generated stolen art under every post
I don't know how I feel about it to be honest. It is a TOOL that's for sure, but I do not think it will replace the artist... the soul of the painting/picture is not there nor will it ever be (in my opinion). But as in your example it may facilitate production art... e.g. for a vfx house or game studio perhaps... where iteration is an important part of the process, as is the time (is money). But for "artists" as opposed to "designers" (there's a difference)... it won't replace them.
Art needs beauty and meaning. AI might be able to recreate things like the "Alegria" style / "corporate art", because it has no beauty or meaning. Postmodern "art" will probably be automated.
as an artist. i hate it. it will just put the competition in the art industry on another level and artists will be forced to produce as much as they can completely eliminating the idea of just loving this piece of art you've spent days on and put your soul into because oh here goes another artist that posts nice paintings several times a day
Being 100% honest, the first time I saw it my eyes almost got in tears and the fear took over me because I'm not even a junior yet and people are blasting AI art 200 times quicker than a portfolio piece of mine. Glad to see you back with the channel man
You can use this tool too tho? People don't pay concept artists to be good at painting or drawing. Its about the ideas being generated, and ai can't generate ideas. Painting or drawing is just a tool to describe your ideas, this ai is just another tool to that end.
And being able to paint and draw on top of these images is a huge part of it too. Even adding 3d to the mix etc.
@@user-fd8fe9hk9q ai can't generate ideas,.... yet. In reality there will be very very few things that people can do better than AI once the technology is really up and on its feet. Don't mean to be a doomsdayer... but I am a realist... and I follow cutting edge tech enthusiastically as a technical artist. This technology is going to hit global society like an astroid,... and to be honest,.. I don't think we are ready for it yet. With the way we do things now,... we will end up with a handful of ultra rich individuals ruling over everything. No middle class, no purpose aside from passion projects... because why go study for 6 years at university to laern something an AI can do 200 times more efficiently after 2 weeks? and if you doubt it,. go watch 2 minute papers youtube channel. We have AI that can control robotic arms and clean up around the house, we have ai that can do protien folding which is apparently one of the most difficult specialities in the world, and rumor has it google has an AI that can pass the touring test..... We are up the creek and people need to start taking notice.
@@brewmeup5827 Being creative is an entirely different domain then anything any AI has done so far. An ai could generate collections of words or pictures based on various equations inputs, and get really good at generating these with a high probability of effecting humans emotionally and culturally. But it couldn't generate meaning from them itself. Even in this world where AI can generate art that convincing, there will always need to be a human in the loop to realize which art is meaningful or not. This future however, will likely never come. We don't even have fully functional self driving cars. It's really easy to get 80%, and make an ai that's really impressive. That's worth a paper and worth talking about. But able to replace a human? Then things become exponentially more difficult. I suspect some AI will be able to surpass that last gap on the exponential difficulty curve, but it's not a given that technology keeps progressing at an exponential rate forever. I agree completely about tech eating the job market and ending up with a tiny elite class with all the power. Although I can see a world where technology is used to give every person the ability to create his own shelter, food, and energy. There will likely eventually be open source versions of all these ai so the owners of the proprietary versions won't have all the power. Also the problem of a few people having all the power has been around since agriculture made the city-state possible, nothing new there. Basically things are not as bleak as you seem to paint them as, and on top of that these predictions are incredibly optimistic and A-historic. All movements from agricultural to industrial hit plateau after growing exponentially, and the informational revolution will likely do the same. 2 minute papers is a good channel btw, I'm also a technical artist working in cg

Creativity is an abstract term,.. as an example you can see on 2 minute papers a series of videos where they are pitting digital agents against each other in a game of catch that is running for like.. 2 million iterations or something nuts.... and it shows why ai and machine learning is bound to overtake us.... oh this was like.. last year or something too,.. anyway,.. the reason we can't compete is due to the way it learns compared to the way we learn.... the ai starts out slow.... for like the first million iterations its just figuring out how to move around... but after about a million it suddenly figures out how to run,... then it figures out how to predict the opponent,... and the competition becomes quite interesting to watch.. but the the thing to note is.. after a few more itereations,.. one of the AI's literally glitches the program so that it stalemates its oponent..since that was the team that was trying to not get caught it wins by default,.. I can't recall the specific thing it did.. something like managed to make its way up to a corner on a ledge that was modelled into the environment and it clipped there and just stayed.... in some of the iterations before it won it was also doing things like blocking entry ways, and exploiting other glitches to get a head start on the other team of agents... That is creativity.... hell that is more creative than what half the people I know could come up with... That is the power of AI,.. it can literally run simulations against a copy of itself millions of times to try out every possible variable. There is a big difference between a computer and a machine learning ai.... and there is not as much of a difference between creativity and crunching numbers,.. thats why you can catagorize almost every story ever made into one of 7 plot lines.... ... about the plateau,.. the thing is... we aren't at the end of the industrial boom anymore,.. we are actually at the start of a trifecta of emerging tech that is going to trigger the next technological revolution. Those are,.. yes AI,... Which due to machine learning is essentially guarenteed to outperform people in almost every single way given enough time. Genetic editing.... think krispr,.... and virtual reality. there are quite a few reports and papers from some fairly on the ball people who discuss how these are already engrained in our lives and will force our species to change how our society is set up for the first real time in thousands of years... from what you are saying it sounds like you are thinking of AI as a powerful GPU or CPU.. but its a completely different beast. So far all AI is specialized... but once we cross that line of a matured general intelligence AI... we are out competed.... We simply do no thave the cognative ability to keep up with that type of intelligence. mainly because we can't use machine learning... at the same time I don't think its a horrible fate... if you think about it... AI is a new type of life,... the collective offspring of the human species,.... and personally I hope it does develop into a great intelligence capabale of seeing far beyond what we can see... or maybe we will merge.. hard to say exactly.. but one thing I can feel pretty certain about... is that if we survive another 50 years.... the world will be vastly different in large part due to AI.
Ai created a massive artblock for me. It made me realize I could be useless and that I could never beat ai for art. That I can no longer strive for being the best, because Ai will just always be better. I enjoyed art to learn techniques and get better, but it makes me genuinely sad this see a piece of art created in seconds like this. And how already it's being used in so many places and filling up my social media.

Humans created machines that could lift many tons a long time ago, yet powerlifter still try to lift as much as possible. Trains could run fastest than a human, yet we still celebrate the worlds fastest. AI can generate paintings convincingly and in large numbers, yet are similarly without soul. As an artist you should ask yourself, if you had an assistant you told your ideas to, who drew and painted everything for you on your command, should the assistant get the credit for being the artist? Of course not. Very few people, even when given the most effective assistant possible, would be abe to create a powerful work of art. The work and styles of concept artist like H Giger or Moebius wouldnt exist without them even if an AI was generated their images for them. Thats the difference between an artist and a draughtsman

@@Moctop Craftsmen executing other people's vision are surely valuable, but there is a distinct difference between that job and the job of the person coming up with the idea. Ideas are a dime a dozen, good ideas are rare. Just like people who draw are a dime a dozen, people who are genuinely skilled at their craft are rare. Despite how hard I try to remain optimistic, it’s pretty stressful watching AI progress as a young 3D artist. I quite honestly can’t imagine life being worth living for me if the visual art industry is automated. It’s difficult not to get emotional about it because Im so passionate about my career and one day, all the work I put in/experience I have could mean essentially nothing.
I always question “just why would you replace artists?” because it seems a bit evil on the surface. Artists typically love what they do and find fulfillment from their work. This isn’t hamburger flipping.
Additionally, artists are already constantly shamed for all their quirks but only accepted because their skills prove useful to many businesses who rely on their creative talent. I cant imagine how poorly artists would be treated by the business class if their skills served no monetary value.
I’d rather be f&@king dead than work a boring, awful job for decades just because society hasn’t figured out how to automate it yet. The only thing that keeps me optimistic is that I love what I do so much I shouldn’t really care if a robot can do it better than me. I do it because it brings me peace and calms my mind. It’s no secret, art is therapy for many artists.
I also hope people love supporting other people and don’t care as much about supporting robots. Handmade clothing and jewelry still exists despite much of the field being automated so that’s somewhat promising. So hopefully when all digital art can be automated, our society will find a way to value and support digital artists.

Honestly as someone who took the leap from working a factory job to studying and putting thousands of hours into this it's just.. I dunno. you put it into good words. Why live if trying to make something of my life for once just got obliterated?
I've talked to a bunch of people in the industry about it and the opinions seem pretty consistent all across the board, you wont have to worry about AI replacing us anytime soon. As mentioned in the video if you observe ai images they dont really look defined, they just kind of resemble things we know so you could never use them for any other purpose then to look interesting. From there it's our job as artists to make sense of them if we want to use them as a tool. I'm pretty much just repeating the points from the video but as long as you practice your fundamentals and always keep pushing your skills you wont have to worry about being replaced anytime soon. As soon as AI will be able to pump out fully playable and interesting games by just typing a prompt, that's when we might be fucked lol

@@morphice18 Personally, I think it’s a bit too hopeful to believe AI won’t become more capable than human artists at some point. AI Art went from a laughable toddler level to beginner concept artist level in just a few years. While I dont believe it will replace all artists and their jobs, it will ultimately be a unique/rare decision to choose to hire human concept artists at some point (like 20-30 yrs from now). So only the best of the best will make a living as a concept artists. Which in reality, is kinda how it already is anyways lol
@@FemtoKitten Exactly. That’s why I want to speak on this in a video. I’m doing a bit of “soul searching” if you will because of the AI Art right now as it threatens my entire career. But I do think there is a very healthy and positive way we as artists can cope with this as AI continues to improve. I’m not the type to subscribe to cliche “everything will be okay” sugar-coated messages, but I don’t think the future for artists has to be AS dark as we currently picture it.
Developed further, this can be effectively utilized to cut costs in media production and I think we know what, or who, those costs are.

Whether you adapt your work to it or not your employer will still make the decision to hire you, keep you, or not. If they are a starting studio there is a high chance they will but existing ones who already have artists most likely won't hire more than they need to.

I have been testing MidJourney for about two weeks now to the extent that I have been put into the ''relax'' mode (on the "unlimited" plan). I've been perfecting my art skills for about 12 years now so when I first saw the results this AI is throwing out I was afraid, It is certain that many of the smaller jobs we as painter used to get as for example to draw a D&D party are gonna be out. As this technology gets better every month (this goes really fast months not years) we are going to see entry level art skills disappear. People are gonna be able to do it by themselves.
We have to face the possibility that this is industry changing and the process of art creation is never gonna be the same. I compare this to the invention of photography, when it was first introduced people thought painting was going also disappear, but to the surprise of everyone painting evolved integrating photography as a part of the process and also found ways to differentiate it from photography. As photography raises in popularity is the point when more abstract and shape design paintings start to appear.
Today I stand positive about AI, I have seen that people without art skills are not a successful creating interesting and pleasing images, most non artistic minded people tend to create very generic looking art with this AI. While experienced painters already know where they are going.
Being generic is it's biggest struggle right now . Most art coming out of it has a very obvious digital/AI look (O though this can rapidly change from on day to the next). In my opinion this is gonna re valuate traditional art, painted in a canvas or in peace of paper, as for digital, it will go under heavy changes. So embrace yourselves and fasten your seat belts my fellow artist.
This is gonna be a revolution as big as Photography.
Two more thing I didn't mention. The amount of art coming out by second from this AI's is incredible. We could flood Art Station in a Week. In a week we could post more art that the amount it has been upload to this point. You can make a complete portfolio in an hour. And as this technology creates more define characters and reasonable looking buildings it's gonna be really difficult to differentiate it from "real art".
I wonder how new talent is gonna be recruited in company and how are they gonna be evaluated.
On a even grimmer note. Now an Art director can create a body of work comparable to the size of a full concept art team. The speed increase even with over paints and photobashing is incredible. And being able to use seeds and reference images for the AI makes it really consistent in it's output.

This technology has been shooting my anxiety through the roof as it’s somewhat heartbreaking to see AI pump pieces out that so many people have worked their whole lives to do themselves. I believe artists will find a way to remain necessary and relevant, however, there’s certainly going to be some rough patches to endure due to this technology. I don’t want to be pessimistic, though I also shy away from being naive. I don’t believe the “it’s just gonna be used as another tool” argument for too long. Maybe for now. But 10 years from now? 30 years from now?
As soon as businesses can’t cut labor costs, they’ll go right ahead and do it. So I wouldn’t count on “it’s just another tool” for too long. Lol
My gut feeling at the moment - for now it's just another tool - but with a difference, because each time you use it you are effectively teaching it to replace you. Clients can type sentences too and pretty soon they really will be able to generate hundreds of variations on the perfect bespoke piece with a click of a button. We are currently enabling that scenario to play out. Fine, call me old fashioned but I like getting paid to draw stuff. 😆
AI can only generate images based on statistical likelihood of images that already exist being described similarly. What an artist should be doing is re-contextualizing the problem to create new ways of looking at it, new ways of interpreting the world. Generating new meanig entirely.

@@boxysav What Im describing is not a system that can be automated. What Im describing is completely anti-systematic by nature. Even if the ai gets incredibly good at what it does, it wont be able to do things its not programmed to do, and cant be programmed to do. Although yes many things will be automated or at least partially automated and that will effect the world in various negative and positive ways.

It’s the same end game as a computer beating a chess master or churning out portraits which are indistinguishable from real people or deep fakes. I guess in the short term if it helps us meet impossible deadlines then we have a reason to justify usage, but maybe we’d be better off just saying ‘that’s an unrealistic deadline.’ 😆

As an artist I dont care whether the art is drawn and painted by me or someone else, or a robot. I want the art to exist in the way I want it to exist. It's not though. With photobashing you are literally using someone elses work. The AI is trained on this art, but makes its own stuff from scratch "inspired" by it...just like any artist.

Right now, AI art generation is iterated on art made by people. What happens at the point that there is more AI art out there than human art and the AI starts iterating on AI art? Will art start to become homogenized?
You don't have to wait, current AI art looks sometimes very visually pleasing but also for the most part incredibly generic. And it couldn't be any other way, while these algorithms do not simply collate images, they are little more than high skill forgers/imitators.
If AI art continues improving and becomes capable of being sufficiently sophisticated to replace the output of designers/concept artists with some guy writing some prompt lines, there's no way industry will not use it to replace human labor, and we'll come to the point that AI will in time have churned out way more artwork than any human could realistically. That, as you said, will be the point when AIs will likely begin to just use other AI art as reference, beginning and endless cycle of output with copy-pasted style.
If you think that current pop culture is somewhat stale and repetitive, the current state of affairs won't hold a candle to the cultural human centipede that an AI dominated culture would probably look like. I just hope that this will not discourage people from pursuing art on their own terms, without or with limited AI aid, be it traditional or digital art, but the broad landscape looks bleak to me.
This is amazing but I’m worried about the future of concept art in terms of work and skill levels. You don’t have to be a really skilled artist to type in some words and can easily paint over a generated piece.
Well, those people that utilize it would struggle A LOT if they have to do anything traditional or hadn drawn which some game studios almost require, riot games being one of them.

@@thisismyalias Same thing can still be said about those who use a computer to make art. It just depends upon how you use it. I know of a few artists who only do photobashing, they don't know how to even draw a simple box. because of this, they struggle to implement photobashing in a cohesive manner. Thus their image looks, stiff and fake because the lighting of the seperate images are completely different.
You still need fundamentals to be a great artist!
One analogy I'd give as an amatuaer musician is this:
With digital audio workstations (DAWs, which can be thought of like Photoshop or Illustrator for music), the human errors can easily be corrected. For example, if the drummer goes off beat on a particular snare hit, one can drag the snare and 'snap' it back into beat. And with virtual instruments, you can get high quality sounds without actually having to play the instruments or even have them phisically.
All this power enables one to produce music which is really slick, shiny, with every note perfectly tuned and falling on the precise beat.
Well, it turns out, that overtime humans find such "perfect" music boring and even at some level, tiring. So the digital musicians go to great lengths to introduce 'noise' into the system, making notes fall off-beat, and all other tricks required to mimic a normal human performance with all it's flaws.
Who knows once we are inundated with AI art, at some deep level, we may have a similar reaction !
This is not how AI works. AI quite literally operates on approval.
If AI music were to become a trend and people would grow bored with it it could introduce that error deliberately, just to gain more approval. All AI does is "categorize".
As someone who has some technical knowledge about deep learning, these kinds of systems, while really impressive, all it does is taking information and spitting out variations of it, we are far from actually generating ideas, and this is where the artist must come in. Diffusion models will replace many illustrators but the most creative ones. For concept artists it can be a wonderful tool.
As someone who who isn’t a painter. This tool made me appreciate art even more when i started searching for different artists and the history of art. This tool is also beneficial for me as my ideas will be very hard to do in my industry which will take months or years to do and huge budgets. I have suffered from expressing my creativity due to the restrictions that i have in my job. And this certainly will make me express more but as you said for the long term I’m not sure what it will do me mentally.
I have a few predictions
1- AI will speed up art ideation. Art will therefore be much quicker to produce. If this becomes the norm, perhaps expect shorter deadlines, or higher quantity of art to be expected, at least for the early phase in production. More art produced at the same level of work.
2- Future games might be bigger in scope, especially AAA games. More locations and environments, more costumes, more weapons, more everything because it is easier to generate art to clean up and build on top of.
3- Because 2d art will be quicker to produce, the 3d department might become a bottleneck. AAA game studios might need more 3d artists, unless 2d artists generalize or a good 3d AI comes as well. Or less 2d artists are needed.
4- Beginners could fake fundamental skills by being lucky on an AI generation to paint on top of. Basically making it more difficult to find good artists to hire that actually know how to design and render (still necessary even with AI). Therefore your work experience will become more important for getting hired. Beginner artists will have a harder time getting noticed if they are not better than AI.
5- In the far future we might have really good 2d and 3d AI's. Instead of having 2d and 3d artists, both jobs could be done by one person. Generate 2d, fix in photoshop, generate 3d, fix in 3d software. It becomes conceivable for a single person to do. Generalizing will therefore be more important in the future.
6-At the very least, it will become easier and less time consuming to produce certain kinds of textures for painting and 3d, especially anything that is random, organic, time consuming, and doesn't require a lot of fixing, like rocks, clouds, mountains, landscape stuff, etc.
I am not sure about any of these, but its something to think about :)
As a student in the media field, AI Art and Edits like those both scare and immensely hype me at the same time
From an engineering standpoint it is just amazing what we will be able to do with this Technology in a few years
Though initially I was looking forward to it, since I expected AI to reduce the amount of manual labor, I am currently in the phase of "shock", because the results equilibrate the technical aspects between an amateur and professional so much.
I try to figure out If the decades of learning art were wasted or not, since the results are fantastic, no matter how much art skill the person has who types in the text. I should know that all the craft I have acquired is absolutely not in vain. Furthermore, I have a clear vision of what I want and how to use my experience in combination with the AI. In fact, it puts me more into the seat of a director and allows me to create bigger worlds and projects.
But seeing the internet flooded with AI generated art, it makes me a little worried if the effort I put in is noticed. I think it will be the same as photobashing. Currently, we are flashed by the impact of it, but after some time the style might get repetitive. For me personally, I have to think more like a businessman and less like a craftsman. Develop a narrative, animation, a USP, something that is on the next highest meta level. I feel most artists are very focussed on the craftsmanship and because of that it stings a lot.

The best thing to do if you’re an independent is find a way where you don’t have to compete with AI. Painters don’t compete directly with photographers, yet photographers have an unfair advantage to snap tens of photos in literally seconds. Imo, it’s naive to believe this technology won’t eventually be just as capable as the average concept artist as it went from chicken scratch bullshit to shockingly decent art in just 2 years. As it goes for corporate jobs, however, I don’t see a bright future for most concept artists unfortunately. I too am deeply concerned about that. More so than many concept artists I’ve spoke with.
Why do you assume the concept artist will have to compete with AI? Why not embrace the AI tools that will make the concept artist even faster and better at their job.
@@danielnewton2390 I don't think concept artist should try to compete with AI as it's an impossible task. However, I am also a bit frustrated with the "just use it as a tool" narrative right now.
I was told by someone it's my "responsibility as an artist" to start using this AI. But at this point, the AI could change our workflow so much it's almost a different craft entirely. I understand using it as a tool, but I have little to no interest drawing like a toddler on Nvidia Canvas to let the ai do all the fun work and spit out a beautiful image. Was it the painters responsibility to become a photographer?
That's ridiculous. They fell in love with painting, not photography and we respect that.
Sure, we'll be expected to use such tech when we're hired as concept artists, but adopting it just for the sake of earning money is missing the point of our dream jobs. Artist want to perform their craft passionately and get paid to do so.
If the jobs become just "DALL-E made this image. Please move the waterfall 10 pixels to the left", it's not really fun, creative, and interesting anymore. To many artists, this doesn't sound like the craft they fell in love with. So we'll have to accept these jobs just to get by, not because we love them.
I understand we're not quite there (yet), but you can see how it's concerning to those of us who poured our hearts and souls into the digital art career space.
On a brighter note: I can foresee this leading to some jobs that aren't so bad, but I'm not sure how long that will last. And no one can be certain so we're all naturally looking out for ourselves incase AI is a threat to our jobs.
When I saw someone type in a sentence to describe the art they wanted to see and it being rendered by the A.I. The first thing I thought was "Although it looks nice, it can be used as a starting point to toss some ideas around into it before committing to something." Yes some of the art the A.I makes will be good as is for some. However, what's great is that by typing in the sentence into the A.I and getting a result. It gives both you and/or someone else a starting point to talk about what vision they have.
If I could make something tangible that everyone could see almost instantly and have a talking point without trying to think up something by what they said, I'd take that choice. I've made things exactly how someone described it and sometimes they say it didn't hit the mark at all. Yes, the A.I. generated art can also not hit the mark. However, since it's generated quick and can be tweaked quick. It allows us to communicate the vision better.
And then a few more steps and you can cut out the artist altogether and just write requests directly into the AI input field.
Excellent video! Made me realize that AI art is very thought provoking. That statement at the end about having ideas, but too high of a standard and not enough time to execute all such ideas, was powerful.
This is only the beginning of the death of the concept artist/visdev artist profession, I'm calling it. Software houses and corps in general will start to use simple prompts even with characters at some point, saving money and cutting budget. Maybe this will also be applied to indie companies, but with a minor impact.
If you define yourself as a meat machine that spits out paintings based on exact specifications you might be right. Fortunately developing products is not that simple. Get involved in the process early. Develop ideas and concepts that influence the end product. For a very long time AI art will aid you in that process by steering you in the right direction quickly (The same way 3D and photobashing to today). To generate a finished product that fits the purpose exactly, heavy human influence will still be required
@@pidoubleju refining AI products might still be required (as it is now with people who use AI as a base), but if we have come to this result in a bunch of years, what stops AI development from producing a sheet of 100 different concepts of the same character in a couple of minutes? This should scare us.
If this makes you fell better. 3d animation motion capture have been there for years and hasn't replaced hand key animation yet. Hell raw motion capture animations looks very bad without hand cleaning from an animator. Even with expensive suit requires hell amount of hand cleaning

A very long time, possibly never. Things become more complex exponentially, entropy sets it, and the task becomes practically unfeasible although theoretically possible
@@user-fd8fe9hk9q Generating 3d models with ai is just around the corner, the Midjourney developers has said it's already capable of this, they just need a database large enough to train their model.
@@Moctop I'm mostly thinking about models at a high enough level of quality that they are usable in the industry. I think ai will be able to generate models that look somewhat like their supposed to, and maybe people will be able to incorporate that into their workflow, but ai won't become the work flow anytime soon. Personally I wouldn't use it even as a starting place for a sculpt since the getting the block out just right is so important.

When people ask if this is a deathblow to designers, and a lot of content creators produce the same optimistic answer (which I find suspicious as a cynic who believes anyone making money from ad revenues has their vested interests) I prefer to say YES it is/will be a death blow to designers.

Problem with todays world is that it seems imposible to create Artist like Beksiński, Kossak or Giger . Copy & Paste culture is a main thing in art today. Everything looks same. Nobody have Time to dig deep . Taking into consideration what i said before - are you artist or tool operator? Are you creating or operating? Where is the source of your inspiration - internal or extrenal?
Most are slow machines. And now, where they are seeing fast machines they're scared. It's all about being an employable machine than about being a creator who sees the possiblities of the upcoming technologies in helping them creating their own worlds. Because there are no own worlds inside! :D

My brain nearly exploded. I had hit a blockage and was having trouble feeling inspired, but just 2 days with Midjourney and my muse had woken up big time. I dont see it as a final thing but as a tool to use and expand or even to smash out ideas and then go on to create my own art from the inspiration.
With AI I feel as if art will lose all meaning to the point where it's not even worth making anymore, other than for the pursuit of the craft. In terms of the industry, I'd say individual artists will be squashed between the cogs of an uncaring new-age corporate machine trying to meet demands. Heck, even individual artists work will become meaningless due to the sheer quantity of it all.
Why would any of that happen? Art is a quality game not a quantity game. It doesn't matter if you 1000x the amount of art being made, the demand stays the same and only those few that meet the demand are reproduced and rewarded. 99.99% of art on the internet is almost completely ignored already. You also seem to confuse the role of the artist with that of the draughtsman. The artists comes up with the idea, the draughtsman executes the idea in a given medium.
@@user-fd8fe9hk9q Well, Midjourney can create really looking good landscapes in minutes, no artists can do that, you can then use those pictures to create landscapes for your game or movie or whatever.
At this point, we have remove one person from the equation, aka cut costs, sadly this is the reality of companies.
Looking forward to using tools like this for photo bashing. I spend a lot of time taking photos and searching for photos and I could see this helping me speed up my workflow.

What I could imagine is that in the future there might also be some backlash against AI-created art and that a subsection of customers would employ a contract that stipulates that the commissioned work must not be based on or have used AI-generated content in its creation, in order to preserve the spirit of originality.
All customers? Surely not. A majority of them? Unlikely. But I guess that "AI-free" might in a few years even become a seal of quality to some who will be fed up with the (almost unavoidable) flood of AI content to come.
as an artist i guess were doom if we all rely on this AI we wont draw on our own perspective of art... its only my opinion ...
AI art is not art, it is a statistical model of all the art that was shown to it.
I think it's a great tool to begin to visualize an idea, a project, especially if you're not very good at concept art yet, I think in the future there will be code or prompt artists, but not yet at the moment, if you look closely at the results, certain recurring patterns can already be seen in these works.
but it is certainly a useful tool to visualize your ideas, inspire you and above all work faster. the problem with technology is not keeping up with it, we have to use it to our benefit.
A downside I haven't seen mentioned yet is how these kinds of tech developments will impact our imagination. For example, if an AI is creating real-time images for you based off an audio book, you're no longer using your own imagination. Sort of like how Siri and other voice-assistants destroyed inquisitive talk. No longer do people need to ponder or recall certain events when the answer is a simple voice command away. I fear AI technology is progressing faster than our ability to foresee potential consequences. A future generation may be on the horizon that would barely need to use their imagination for anything, which could jeopardize their ability to reason and/or think abstractly.

I also live from art. I see many artists worried about being replaced by machines. I feel incredibly optimistic about the new aesthetic possibilities for visual art or even music that this brings. Who knows what kind of cooperation or merger between us and the machines may exist relatively soon that broadens our spiritual horizon, our collective imagination, our ability to think new horizons... this excites me and gives me faith.

Where I think AI is problem is when an AI "artist" wins a competition with other artists. AI Art competitions should be a separate category, so people can prompt away with each other.
It's just another tool us Artists can use.
Everyone thought using 3D software was going to be the death of Vis Dev and Concept art - but it's just allowed us to do stuff quicker, and in a lot of instances create better and more accurate work.
I can totally imagine using this type of AI system for idea generation, taking some outputs and fully fleshing those ideas out to a much more nuanced and thoughtful design.
It could be a fantastic tool to ignite our imaginations when we are struggling with a blank canvas.

3D software introduced completely new techniques that can't be put onto a 2D surface, hence 3D artists were needed. Concept art just needs rough concepts. Concepts that anyone can get by just writing a few words into an AI prompt.
As if this industry was not ALREADY competitive and saturated enough. Now we have to compete with lifeless bots. Great. I guess there is a positive way to look at it, though.
What do I think about it? hmm... well I think anyone who believes this will evolve to become a great basemesh generator for blender... or starter scaffold for any variety of other artistic mediums, has not really thought into where this is all leading very well. The rate of AI and Machinelearning development is borderline scary... at this stage we can't be more than a few years to a decade at the max, away from an general intelligence AI that can master extremely high quality artwork, scientific development, design, management, social policy, teaching, medical services, anddd you could add just about any job type onto this sentance.... So,.... the better question to ask would be...... How are we going to make the world work,.. How will we structure our societies, and how are we going to make a living,.. when an AI can do 99.99% of things better than we can, This is going to break society on a global level, and there don't seem to be many poeple bringing this up... but hey... maybe AI wil be able to solve that issue for us too ey? It is scary as hell, but also exciting as hell. But I do think that people need to start pushing this above topic out for discussion and consideration as much as possible
But also, you have to think that people who develop this, must know this, the products that are created are created for us, the humans, a machine has no use for clothes or a hand bag, if there are no consumers it will be virtually useless to have an AI generating hand bags or some other things.
hopefully AI will not lead to a tecnocratic society where only the super wealthy survive, but instead where we as people can work less, and enjoy LIFE.
As a musical artist who is just establishing a UA-cam channel, AI art is a huge plus for me. I can generate images to go along with my music on a budget that I wouldn't insult a real human with. But I think that if I'm successful I will want to start working with human artists who can understand the stories behind my music and create compelling visual art that enhances the story.

As an artist I'm flabbergasted some people are actually glad with this development. AI is an aggregate - worse yet, it's an aggregate of content taken straight from whatever pool was fed into it.
If this workflow of "using AI generated art" as a basis to expand upon becomes a thing creativity goes straight out of the window. No more new angles; just rehashing the same pool of images to create very similar looking results. But it will be blazing fast and cost efficient, so lots of digital artist will be cut out of the production process.
And for what purpose? Exactly. To feed those at the top of the chain. Long live capitalism!
AI is an infinite photo-bashing images database,because the AI needs those hundreds/thousands of millions images to create.
It's like filtering photos by name from your images organizer but the source of photos is infinite and it gets things spot on everytime.
My only concern is that which language is the most efficient and intelligible to express thoughts. Because English doesn't do it justice and has a lot of limitations.
You start with quantity & then quality will emerge from it. With AI you can make 50 moodboards & overpaint the best 10. & those best will shift you in a direction you couldn’t imagine. Since we are all biased in our compositions & approach. It’s a fresh wind of inspiration & a tool indeed. Also it helps a lot with starting a story when you only have a rough idea. So yeah I’m all in!
This is HUGE for the film and TV industry. At present, it may not totally replace concept artists but just imagine you’re a production designer…..instead of hiring an artist on big wages for weeks or months, you can now just type a few words and generate hundreds of thumbnails for your director to view. Only much later will a concept artist be brought in to finalise an idea….if at all! No doubt we’ll also get to a point where AI will be able produce 3 dimensional concepts as well. Given the ever increasing budgets for film and TV, this is definitely the future, as the AI becomes ever more powerful.
Nothing more exciting like artists and writers being told all the years of honing their skill are useless
i guess one of the things one could do to is put themselves in the shoes of the leadership of a company and at the same time, the customer, because, in all honesty, the first in general, will "always" go for the most cost benefit, and the latter, at a mass scale, don't necessarily "care" as long it creates some emotional impact... so, we got the clear difference between "the enjoyment of the process" versus the results
the question that "if it is art" is almost irrelevant at this point, because, no matter the semantics, it is a tool with incredible capability, and again, i guess directors in general, and the public will not care the name of "the thing" if it can deliver the goods
no matter the "poetry" involved, the economics of it has the upper hand...in a industry level, of course

This was never about the tool, AI is not a tool, it’s a human replacement.
A new tool requires new training, new people, creates new opportunities, making more new jobs.
Ai was designed to reduce employment, cut down budget, slash the number and accumulate capital.
While a tool transfer opportunities from one person to another, AI makes what could become everyone’s wealth die in the top few’s pockets.
Artist is a highly comprehensive job, and if that could be replaced completely by AI, then virtually every job can. This is not a sign or problem just for the artists, it is a problem for everyone.
Not to mention the incredibly unethical practices of AI’s Essenes, virtually cutting up pieces of existing art and pasting them together by mass user data mining.

Exactly! I've been saying this for a decade, but people just are too dumb to realize the impact of technological advancements until FINALLY it is too late.
AI is a tool that will be used to further divide capital. We already live in a world where over half the population lives in extreme poverty. Take for example India: one of the biggest food exporting countries in the world, while having one of the highest rates of starvation. Why? Because capitalism functions this way: exploit the weak to feed the already powerful. AI is going to make a lot of people obsolete and put them into poverty, just to faciliate even more luxery for those at the top.
It's not that the technology itself is evil either; it is that we live in a society that handsomely rewards using it for malicious purposes.

Artists will surely find something new to do, as that is what they take pride in- creating something that does not exist. Just like when the camera was invented, artists slowly lost meaning in drawing super realistic art. Then the Impressionism movement started which quenched their thirst. As an art form which is being worshipped today, which redefined the meaning of art, even impressionism received backlash at first from many artists, just like you said about photobashing.
So definitely something new is going to come, the world will keep changing, however I am not sure how nicely we would accept it. I still can't accept photobashing for some reason.
You hear this sentiment echoed on all AI related topics, but it completely foregoes the way the tool works.
AI is adaptable. You take a picture and it abides by its inherent properties. Like you mention realism. You use AI and there is no single mold it cannot fit to. Realism, surrealism, cubism. Everything. AI is not a tool to a solution, it IS the solution. You are a human - you function similarly; you adapt. That is what causes you to claim you will "just try something that does not exist"; but what keeps AI from doing the exact same thing?
AI has the potential to make everyone in every single field obsolete given enough time.
I'm not sure you've quite grasped the full extent of AI. It will replace all craft but the top tier talent which will simply tweak it. Eventually those will be replaced as well, as will other jobs.
Until then, craftsmen will start disappearing, and almost only actual artists will remain. Those with ideas, able to tie things together and figure out novel ways of creating never before seen things with major impact will still have a job in the coming years.
But craftsmen, the vast majority of people in film and games which we refer to as artists, will disappear.
Large companies will suffer, as they mostly rely on their financial strength and numbers to create high quality content with craftsmen, thus gaining a market edge.
A true artist, or two, will eventually be able to create fresh and compelling experiences in no time from their basement and release them globally.
Right now there are machine learning algos yet unreleased to the public which are able to animate, rig, code, write copy and control machinery. They will become more capable and not too long in the future will start being developed to develop other more efficient machine learning algos.
It could be an amazing future for all, but only if we start looking at society differently, restructuring it to have AI serve the needs of the.majority rather than the few.
For AI to benefit humankind we would have to get rid of capitalism. Capitalism rewards exploiting the weak. Unfortunately capitalism VERY AGGRESSIVELY reinforces its own status quo; the means are in the hands of the few, which can be used to suppress the demands of the many.
Your point about generating AI textures to use on 3D models makes midjourney a genius creation.
Could this AI be used to design models for 3D printing? Using the same input techniques, I imagine it could produce an .stl file that could be sent to a printer.

Art has always been about the idea. You still do that with this.
Its really handy for art directors who spend most of their time in meetings with little left for sketching themselves. They could do an hour or two of AI sketches to support ideas.
In short- we need to think of ourselves as music producers not guitars players. Most music producers aren’t masters of anything - but know their way around many different instruments and genres.
Further more a concept artist myself here’s my two cents - as a community we have to start becoming more aware of the ‘meta’ of how our art is interpreted in the modern world. Every medium of art has a certain ‘lean’ in the way that you can push and present the medium and have it be the most impressive. It’s going to be more important now as artists to begin to clearly advertise what we are ‘getting at’ with in a given style that we are using. This will make us much more getable to the masses and will help us always stand out from Ai. We need to emphasize the human elements of art.
Kim Jung Gi is a perfect example. He’s not the best artist at anything. (His drawings are busy and splotchy as shit let’s be honest). But he’s very transparent about ‘his thing’ and it becomes a performance to watch him draw.
Just as we do not judge the violins in a pop song in the same way as we do an individual violinist, so we as artists must start to carve out these smaller domains of performative expression. Smaller more potent creative play spaces. And yes - this is way easier to do In traditional mediums.
OR - join forces with the AI’s.
Lastly- we need to expand our skillsets such that a team of 10 artists could make a very cool stylized little video game - with a very unique human centric style. Ori and the Will O wisps comes to mind.
In short- we need to think of ourselves as music producers not guitars players anymore. Etc etc.
if this only cuts out a few jobs of concept artists, it's gonna make an already very difficult field even more difficult to get into. There will be an even higher gate of entry to get into. And while yes there is need for artists and likely always will be, There is still the factor of how many of one's own resources can a person afford to put in their skills, years of experience, blood sweat etc. before they have to 'get a regular job.' and yes, always the case with art. there's risks for such a job, but if certain types of concept artists are no longer needed (cause AI can do it faster even though probably not better), it's gonna have an effect on other things.
quantity vs quality. Its inevitable that quality will get better and better.
I think that people saying this is end of art being drawn by people are getting a little ahead of themselves. It can do very interesting things that are great for fantasy, scifi, and even surreal genres. It does environments pretty well good, but it works with a broad brush. It also cannot handle people super well and frankly, it doesn't do minute adjustments at all. It's still an all or nothing program. You'll always need a person to get *exactly* what you need. What I think it WILL do is cut down on amount of nonsense that concept artists are hired to do. Why spend your days concepting 1000 crates when you can just have a machine do it and you can focus on the more important stuff?

See.. this to me screams YES. Ive always been interested in art and never really took the big time to get into it until recently, and even then I always lack motivation or simply dont have enough time. Im really good with ideas and imagination, to the point i could describe you a scene in amazing detail (Without sounding too modest) and not being able to produce that is.. upsetting to say the least. If the prompt is this advanced.. for someone like me its like, bringing your imagination to life almost. If i could afford it I'd totally go for the software, I think its amazing!
(I do however understand how fustraiting it must be for young and experienced artists who will spend hours coming up with something that the AI can do in minutes... for me personally, I want it bad :c)
While I don't think AI will replace artists, it sure will replace stuff like stock photography, simply because it's free and allow getting images from very precise prompt, something you cannot get from stock photos. People will hire less professional photographer, because the AI is enough.
I think Imagen and DALL-E 2 produce much more convincing result than Midjourney, and are actual viable alternative to stock images.
Imagen and Dall-E 2 is better at photo realism and coherency, but worse at art.

i agree with everything you said there.. and i also think AI has a LONG way to go before it even steps close to the creativity of a human mind. you need to keep feeding it key words for it to udnerstand what's in your head, and sometimes it gets close, but not enough. i agree it is a powerful tool for ideas, colors, compositions, but it won't be able to produce all of the final images we need :) and that's where the humans take back the reigns yeehaw

Leaning into any tool and using it as a crutch is always bad for your personal development as artists. I can see this being a nice thumbnail idea generator for more experienced artists that already have good fundamental skills. But for more junior artists it can be pretty bad as you lean more into midjourney or other AI generator to do big chunck of the work for you. Rather than spend the time to learn those skills yourself. Same goes with photobashing i´ve seen a heck of a lot more bad photobashing than good one. But that´s what happens when you focus more on the details and presentation rather than the idea and storytelling.

It is kinda like magic. So many possibilities and mostly it surprises me with how good it is! I too fear the downsides. But part of me wonders if actual paintings might go up in value as they are really "real" things made by hand and hence rare and unique... people might value the objects themselves more? I have a similar thing with film photography... if I see an amazing old hand printed b&w photo from actual film, and the lighting and image is amazing I just have more respect for the photographer as you know it hasn't been digitally manipulated compared to a thousand great photos online and hence has more value somehow to me. But it might almost shift these analogue formats into being seen as "antiques"... still rare and valuable but from another era... the current one is about to be flooded by millions of mind-blowing images... and I'm not sure how its all gonna work out!

If ai art keeps progressing then I may be able to bring some of my larger ideas to life without relying on a studio full of people or a lifetime spent on one project.
I believe this would open up a world of new possibilities for the individual artist.

I don't know how I feel about it to be honest. It is a TOOL that's for sure, but I do not think it will replace the artist... the soul of the painting/picture is not there nor will it ever be (in my opinion). But as in your example it may facilitate production art... e.g. for a vfx house or game studio perhaps... where iteration is an important part of the process, as is the time (is money). But for "artists" as opposed to "designers" (there's a difference)... it won't replace them.

Art needs beauty and meaning. AI might be able to recreate things like the "Alegria" style / "corporate art", because it has no beauty or meaning. Postmodern "art" will probably be automated.
