Every few years, new tools come along that make art easier to create. Lately there's been a lot of talk about AI, and artificial intelligence. Will Artificial Intelligence replace Concept Artists? If you don't know what concept artists do, or if you don't know the difference between concept art and illustration, you may think that you will never need to learn to draw or understand fundamentals of art. You may think that a computer will be able to do anything that is hard or difficult. But most of the time, this is a mental trick that we play with ourselves to talk ourselves out of personal mastery. Be careful to not overlook your own value as a creative and unique person. You have more to offer than just ideas and everything that AI is doing in art has already been done, and there continues to be a need for those who have fundamental knowledge of the craft. #artificialintelligence #conceptart #aiart

I'm gonna be honest, I'm actively hoping the technology for generating art doesn't get any more advanced than right now. Unlike basketball or playing the guitar, painting isn't really a process or performance. It's meant to generate a result (or a product, if you will). That's a pretty big difference
Art's like the one job no one takes "just to pay the bill." I wouldn't want people to be devalued in that field. ):
In any case, I'll keep at it. If I let my spirit get broken by something as trivial as technological progress or anxiety over AI, I've failed as an artist.

Well it's gonna happen, but humans will just move to find things produced with a more rigorous process more impressive. People already appreciate the work that goes into real painting over a drawing (because you dont have an eraser), real drawing over digital, etc. For concept art which is almost entirely about efficiently making a practical product, ai will most definitely take a role so don't actively hope away something away and learn sooner than later, rather than suddenly finding yourself in a time where such a tool becomes a pre-requisite and you spent the entire time of its rise ignoring it ignoring rather than trying to keep pace.

Don't worry. Sure AI maybe get better but
It is human that could make difference. If you use AI art as a base line or reference and you already have the skills and experience of painting, it will be a great tool to brainstorm or get idea from. Sure there will be people who use AI and selling it as their art without lifting finger but it can also be done by anyone. If it can be done by anyone, it will lose it's value. Beside, using AI from start to finish is no fun. Art is about journey and learning yourself and expressing yourself. AI alone doesn't have soul. I've seen AI paintings and sure they might paint it more beautiful that me but it always lacks something, a story, artist's intention or expression of soul. Keep learning to paint because just like people value tradition art more than digital art generally, there will be people who will value painting by human instead of AI. And use AI to your advantage with your knowledge and skills of painting where it needs and don't use it when it requires your full dedication of your own skills.

AI will be able to draw a specific character, in a specific pose etc etc pretty soon but who cares. You'll see a boom in super generic looking and feeling games that people will get tired of. 10 years from now, an AI generated game will be a dirty word. It will simply increase the value of art by humans, storytelling by humans. This is what I believe with AI in general, even with robots. It'll only serve to make humanity shine brighter than ever. I totally agree that you shouldn't stop doing art if it makes you happy. That being said, I think your idea of generic art might be a bit limited in the possibilities of what AI could accomplish.
Idk if you've heard of the library of Babel, but there's a similar analogy with images. Any type of digital art you could ever create or imagine is ultimately just code. If you imagine a 1080p resolution image with each pixel being assigned an RGB values from 0 to 255, individually varying each of the values creates a set containing all possible elements in that search space. The only difference then between a human and an AI is the algorithm that is used to locate an element in that search space that matches the desired prompt. The human may have a subjective experience of joy while travelling through that search space, but they're still fundamentally operating in the same search space that the AI is operating in. This search space doesn't just include one "generic" art format, it includes literally every art style that could be conceived.

@@amentrison2794 as a programmer with about 10 years professional experience I know exactly, what AI will be able to accomplish with art. I don't mean "generic" in terms of limited to a single style or theme or even an emulation of a specific real world art medium (e.g. Yoshi's wooly world). I mean generic in that it will always lack something. I will say that what I originally said will probably only be a subset of games that are exclusively using AI generated assets (by that I mean pre prod and prod assets). Most games developed will include AI as part of their art pipeline and likely will just be used mostly at the very early pre prod stages and then possibly to generate final assets also (giving finished 2d turnarounds and getting a fully rigged and textured 3d model with optimised topology instantly). The in between stages would be human artists and art directors refining what the AI spits out, so in that way, we will still have games that still feel mostly human made.
I just know that there will come a time where there will be very easy to spot signs of AI used to generate game art/designs that we will become accustomed to and there will be a time where stating that a game, DOESN'T use AI at all in the game creation process, will be a selling point. It'll be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

I'm just afraid that people that have literally spend their lives improving their art will be overshadowed by some random AI. All the buzz you see on youtube markets AI art as: "Look: now you don't need the skill to make art" or "Make art without any effort whatsoever". It's instant gratification and I hate it. It's always been "you want to express yourself artistically, you'll have to put in the effort to do so". But now.. it's all within reach and I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or not.
On the other hand, in modern days almost everything can be made by machine and it's the handmade products that actually sell. People want exclusive items and AI generated images are all but exclusive. What I do like is the abstractness of AI art. Some give me straight up Salvador Dali vibes and I can imagine that a lot of artist are going to look at AI art for inspiration.

It's not a good thing! I already see it on some art communities - mainly surreal art because that is the easiest to do stunning low-effort images. And people already throw them out like candy. It sucks.
Once this image generators become so sophisticated that you can not tell the difference anymore, it will be over. They are easy to use. And many people believe it's "their" image because they threw a few words in.

I hear this message and I agree. Yes. People will always make art. Just as how they play chess. Play music. And do sports. Even though a machine could (probably) do all of that better and faster. However, Ai will be to our society what the steam engine and electricity was 200 years ago. Ai is not just a tool. It's the dawn of a new age. And it's happening right in front of us. The steam engine pretty much caused the whole industrial revolution. And with the mass use of electricity it changed society for ever. Suddenly with machines one person could do the job of 10 or 100 others. And it caused a lot of issues because the society at that time, was not ready for it. The rapid changes and shift pretty much meant the end of the agrarian society. People flocked en mass in to the citiese, labour became extremely cheap you had a whole new "class" of people with the so called working class. The effects of all this can be even seen up to this day. Whole new political systems formed because of the industrial revolution! The labour party, labour union all of this and more happend in that time.
So while yes, artists will always exist I believe artists will not become a profession anymore. If pretty much everyone can do with just a few words and a machine in seconds what artists do in hours? Then everyone will do it. A lot of people in the creative industry, will lose their jobs. And it's not just painters/concept artists. Musicians, writers, photographers. ALL(!) creatives will be hit. And it won't be just the creative industry it's just, interesting enough, the first one where it happens. Ai will in the future give drug prescriptions, grade essays, work for lawyers going trough legal papers any high frequent repetitive task can be automated.
So with all due respect, as much as I respect this opinion what we're seeing right now is not just like another tool. I see many make that argument but I feel they are not considering the fact that this, will happen in many industries. One has only to look at researchers and experts in that field which say, 1 in 2 jobs will be affected by Ai and there is potential to lower the workforce by up to 30 maybe even 40%. They somewhat disagree in the exact numbers and time frame. But they all agree. A lot of people will lose their jobs. And I do not see the potential for many new jobs taking over. And even if there would be, those jobs would be very sophisticated and require a skill set that many people are not familiar with. Being problem solvers and strategists, world builders and so on. Things Ai well can't do because it's a computer and not a human. What are we going to do with all those people? Let them starve? I doubt that it's going to be that easy for many to change professions or to adjust. It doesn't usually work like that because societies are complex and when people are feeling threatened and anxious they tend to go backwards - the good "old" days - rather than forward. So yeah. As fascinating as I think Ai is and as amazing as the results are I do not believe that it will lead at improvements in the short term, once it actually really starts to change more industries we we will see a lot more turmoil and stress.
In our current society with the economic model we have in place, which depends on consumerism and people having incomes trough jobs? Ai is like a nuclear bomb just waiting to detonate. And our society is not ready for it. And we have not even talked about the potential abuse of Ai!

Finally, something less optimistic. I honestly like your cynical and realistic view of this because I'm tired of artists saying 'oh it's just a tool, it will never be that good', like no, it will be. I guarantee there is a dystopian future just waiting to happen where the wealthy few can manage, just gotta cope with it.
The only way this can be solved is if there are legal rules implemented to AI and a more ethical training data. But I doubt the developers even care, even at the place of altruism wanting people to make art without any skill, they forget that learning art itself is healthy and instant gratification is not, long-term. It doesn't stop me from learning art though, I'll still do it regardless.
I need a more pessimistic view of how AI is gonna affect art, even better with possible new solutions and ideas. I suspect most industry jobs are gonna change, there's gonna be job roles like 'AI prompt artist' or 'AI art refiner' if there's no legal action taken against AI for its training data

@@bigshroom4457 We have to wait and see what happens. I am a bit less cynical right now but that's because there is a genuine push against AI art by some people which realise how much of a low-effort that stuff really is.
And to your point about being anoyed by artists calling it "another tool", I absolutely share that sentient. I think a lot of artists still don't really realise yet what's happening.
AI image generation is a tool, yes. But what artists are missing here is that it's not a tool made for them. And it's meant to be a tool for non-artists. And that's the game changer here. Any other tool digital or not, was always an extension of artistic skill and expression. Even if photoshop for example made it faster and easier it still required creative input from the user. It required an artist. You can't just start photoshop, throw images in to it and create a master peace out of nothing. It requires experience, knowledge and skill.
AI image generation? Just type a prompt. And even here you don't even have to come up with your own. Just use those from others. Over time the algorithm will also learn what prompt works the "best" creating a lot of likes so I assume even that will become less of a problem and more automated in the future. Making it easier and easier to use. Because that's the whole idea behind it. That EVERYONE(!) can use it and create stunning results.
So yeah. I fear that we will see a lot of creative bancruptcy in the future.

Advances in AI are impressive, of course, but the higher the complexity, the lower the chance it will "replace" a person. Take chat bots for instance - if you have a very simple issue, you don't mind at all that it's a chatbot that delivers you the simple solution. However, the more complex the issue that doesn't get immediately solved, the more frustrated you get with the chatbot and demand a real person to deal with this, even if the person might not be that much more helpful. How many times you've not had an issue and felt annoyed that the company you want to reach has just slapped on an answering machine or chatbot instead of hiring actual people? It immediately feels like they don't value you or your business at all. And this is just for something simple that an AI technically is best suited for, a knowledge bank search and knowledge delivery. If an AI cannot truly replace a person in this sphere, why would it replace it in a creative field?
I do see something else in this conversation, in this insistence that AI will absolutely 100% replace artists. I think many such comments are made by people who currently feel at great risk of their current jobs being automated, and so they find a measure of solace in telling artists that they, too, will be replaced, that their jobs too will no longer exist. "If I go down, I'm taking you all down with me!" type of deal. There's a lot of emotion going around, especially in economically unstable times as they currently are - so do be aware that not every pro-AI person is entirely rational in their assessments. Only human beings can create meaning and invent - an AI only does what it's programmed to do.

Sure, we could enter some sort of space communist utopia where no one needs money or anything, and people could just do art because they like it, but due to the way the world currently looks I don't see a huge restructuring like that happening any time soon.

This has been bothering me for a while now, I’ve looked at many discussions on AI and Im open to using it as a tool to some degree (just for studies, not to incorporate it in my art unless it’s literally just for textures but i’d rather use photos), but since technology grows exponentially Im concerned a good percentage of artists will be replaced in an industry that’s already super competitive and we as people be devalued because we don’t contribute to the market as much anymore, our skills that took so much to hone are rendered useless just like that.
A lot of replies to fearful artists are either people who think AI art will stagnate or people who think artists are these whimsical people who draw pretty pictures and apparently don’t need money to live cause “you do it out of love”. Of course we do, and I will not stop drawing because of it, I literally draw the whole day and cant fall asleep cause i can’t stop thinking about what im gonna study the next day; but you have to understand my parents are afraid im not gonna get a job and I’ve been overworking myself for a long time since I cant fail at this and i know how hard it is to get into the industry and actually make a living out of it + where i live there arent many opportunities, and im NOT the exception. Sometimes i wish i had the same passion i have for art but for something that feels safer, I tried pursuing other stuff but ill rather rot that do anything else. I sacrificed everything for art, art is more important than family and friends time for me, having it as a hobby would never work for me, i cant be happy without it.
We also forget art as a craft has a long history and techniques, methods, knowledge that has been passed down generations that we almost lost with the advent of contemporary art but managed to get it back, and I don’t want it to happen again. What about innovating these techniques as well? And I don’t mean copying and pasting some AI generated art, i mean expanding our fundamental knowledge of art, of the principles and so on. Also artists look at the world differently and it bothers me that AI might render our role so useless that less and less people will keep all of this alive, and the ones who do will be overworked and underpaid and people will possibly look at us like we are filling some useless role just for the sake of it.
I know it’s unlikely to happen that soon, but honestly idk. And for people who say “y’all are overreacting” i mean yea I would like to eat “just do art as an hobby and pick another job” ye imagine telling that to a doc whos been studying 6+years, maybe tell that to a programmer? Oh right, majority of people who criticise artists for being scared are programmers who code the AI (possibly w/ artists work) and get paid for AI generated art, and then tell artists that there’s nothing to worry about if they’re at the top of their field. Funny that a lot of people call artists “selfish “ because they simply want to be able to afford living expenses and art expenses, and they are the same people who make random NFT projects integrating AI into it just to scam people out of their money using “art” as a façade.
Also art ed is expensive(like most educations but more cuz of supplies), and it takes a lot to learn(+standard for entry position is high)and many people only have access to free online resources, if what I’ve said really happens literally only people who are already rich will be able to afford living expenses, materials and education to actually be on top of the field and imagine how many passionate people, potential Frazettas, will be working in a random field they’re not passionate about just because it pays the bills and won’t have the time to study art (because yes, you need to study art A LOT if you want to be good, there is no magic talent thing happening). To be a programmer you have to have a good understanding of math that you study for free al the way up to high school, meanwhile where I live theres no art class offered so everything I learned i had to do it by myself. A friend of mine got out of a highschool specialized in programming and immediately got a job (ill be it not the best, but they pay him good money relative to his expenses) and has been working there ever since. It’s just different.

I have so many complicated emotions about this. I'm terrified about what this will do to artists and the future of art.
I see it's usefulness from a business perspective. But that almost makes me all the more furious. This was not created to help artists but to exploit and replace them. Granted we can use it as a tool ourselves, but I don't see that as being of equal benefit to the millions of jobs it is likely to replace.
I also know that expression and creation shouldn't be limited to those who have the privilege to learn a craft. Giving others a taste of the creative process is beautiful. I'm okay with others using it for personal expressive use. At the same time though, can see how it might devalue the years and lifetimes that artists dedicate to honing their ability. Again, the scale is unbalanced and the ends don't justify the means for me.
Lastly I'm tired of artists being too optimistic about the rise of AI. I'm not blind to the positives, but I feel that the worries of small creators have been unvalidated by those with secure art careers. Those who are already established in the industry will be safe, but what about those of us still working our way up? Granted, I'm still going to do all I can and adapt with the changing climate, and will still create art whether I get paid for it or not.
All in all, I think that AI art is a needless invention of questionable ethics that leaves artists with the short end of the stick. The positives do not make up for the losses we will undoubtedly experience.
(If you read all of this, wow! Thank you! Feel free to share all perspectives. I have very strong opinions but I'm open to others as well. I'm happy we are able to help each other as fellow artist through all of this uncertainty.)

Painting and drawing continued unabated, striking out in new directions, and photography itself (including cinematography) came to be accepted as a valid “art”. We live today in a culture in which we are bombarded daily by _images,_ some which are enjoyed and appreciated by perceptive inividuals and labeled “art”. But what is “art”? It is essentially an aspect of _human-to-human communication._ An artist is a communicator, trained and skilled to communicate through images. In that sense, images cobbled together by algorithms trained to plagiarise details from a vast data base of images (produced by human beings!) are not “art”, however striking many of them undoubtedly are. This very new exciting and surprising technological advance has created anxiety for many artists who fear their expertise will become redundant. I feel this fear is premature and unwarranted. I venture to predict that “consumers” of art will rapidly tire of a superabundance of AI images in which the crucial ingredient of _human imagination_ is lacking. I suspect that AI “art” will eventual settle down to become a source of inspiration for _human_ artists, nothing more.

When 3D computer animation started to become more common in film and television, less traditionally animated content was produced. Many studios closed departments and/or locations but eventually opened 3D animation departments/studios.
I knew a handful of traditional animators who switched to 3D animation. At the same time if you wanted/want to learn 3D animation you still need to learn traditional animation techniques.
Do I think AI neural network learning artists could fully replace most human artists? Yes absolutely but definitely not all, as niche markets exist in many areas. When? Hard to say, as the technology could advanced quicker than we think.

Lots of the tech people talking about it seem very sure that "oh who cares, we won't have jobs in the near future anyways because AI is going to do everything for us and no one will need to work." I sincerely doubt that, though.
And as a young artist, not even yet out of university, It makes me sad that I might have missed out on making art. That I've missed out on the world of art before it all gets drowned in AI-produced stuff. There's a chance that I'll never get to fulfil my dreams just because I was born too late, and some IT man somewhere decided to automate art.

My concern is the intention of why they were developed in the first place, which is mostly for the entertainment industry to cut costs and speed up productivity. It's an amazingly powerful tool and will continue improving at a fast rate. However, the art it generates doesn't feel like it's my own even though I gave it a specific prompt I made up. Although it makes incredible art for you, the enjoyment of making the art yourself is gone. You're left with amazing Ai art while also feeling empty and bored. The sense of creativity and wonder has been stripped away. It's almost like Ai is spoiling the ending of every show or film. That being said, I'll continue to use it while improving in art. However, for others, you can use it as another Pinterest to come up with ideas. Personally, I wouldn't use Ai art as a final rendered piece to publish since it's not my own art.
As for why it was developed, is still into questioning, especially since most of these Ai art developers have not released their database and sources on how their generators make art in the first place. As of now, it seems these generators are stealing thousands of artists' work without their consent to train Ai art generators, such as stable diffusion, midjourney, and so on. If this is the case, the law will eventually catch up to Ai art. More importantly, Artists should be more vocal about this since it's exploiting their rights.

I'm a skilled concept artist & art director for both 2D or 3D games, so I'm aware of the work necessary.
AI will absolutely replace many concept artists. Perhaps even the majority... eventually.
It doesn't need to fully replace concept artists to cause major disruption, it simply needs to make it so fewer artists are needed to create the same or more ideas.
This trend will likely slowly start from this very moment forward.
If one artist can eventually become as productive as 10 artists, and the need for such artists doesn't grow 10 fold in the same time period, we will have a massive oversupply of labor, which will have a major impact on wages of all but perhaps a few top tier talent. Even a relatively mild productivity gain of 10-20% would have a massive impact.
AI will be able to take an existing character, put it in an interesting pose doing something specific to the request of an artist.
Right now you can use existing images to have AI create variants of the original, and it's remarkable how well it is able to do so, even though the software is clearly at such a high degree of infancy.
Right now you can also select specific areas of artwork using software such as Dall-E 2 and make specific requests for variations and changes to the areas. These are already powerful tools, abd they're just getting started.
It's just a matter of time, but AI will come for all jobs. This is not necessarily a fatalistic viewpoint- it may prove to be a wonderful thing, provided if learn to leverage the technology correctly as a society, for the benefit of all and not just the few.

@kogepanm because I understand the technology enough to know how different it is from hand crafted code.
Diagnostics AI is already better and more efficient than expert doctors. Coupled with robotic they will handle surgeries with higher precision, the benefit of which will remove a great deal of power from surgeons. AI is being used in research and to design systems. AI is now useful for 2D art, in making 3D models with good topology, 3D animation and in-betweens, starting to do code and can reply to natural language well enough to pass as human to some people. As opposed to old code, rhses systems learn, adapt and can make meaningful new connections.
The one current downfall is that they must be trained to understand a specific field. They become experts in that field, such as they are becoming at concept art and illustrations, photoshopping, in this instance. But due to the limitations of the code and the dataset, that AI won't be proficient in, say, creating musical pieces. A new ML algo must be developed and trained to do just that, solving specific key problems along the way.
The holy grail is AGI, capable of handling mustiple fields and separate datasets, but we've yet to develop our model for that. It will come. Until then we will just make many thousands of specialists, and each of those specialties will replace most of the workers in the field. Perhaps not all, and certainly not at first, but it doesn't need to in order to destroy what you think of certain professions nowadays, and remove all the power from the common men. Everytime a profession is taken by AI, many in those massive numbers of displaced workers will flood other professions, diluting them, increasing labor supply and so reducing wages.
Productivity sill increase, but wages of most but a few very intelligent and specialized in professions hard to table by AI (at first) will decrease by a large amount.this is nothing new- we already see this cap in wage growth in developed economies save but for a few categories where capital tends to flow to and a high degree of proficiency and skill are required. The trend will simply accelerate, and the common working man will feel ever more disconnected from the idea that they could have a meaningful economic impact.
AI learns. It is here to learn what we do and do it better, faster. There is a future where humans aren't needed.
If we are to stay relevant as a species, we either must stop the development of AI (we won't, and we can't) or we must find a way to merge with it, such that the technology improves us, and we evolve as a species.
What other choice is there? We are creating a new form of thinking.

Humans were never "needed" in the first place, the real reason people are going to thrive with or without AI is called "want" humans usually "want" stuffs, and they'll go to any end to get it, no matter what, no matter the time it takes.
If i "want" to keep doing art, i'm going to, no matter what, if that means creating my own studio with a bunch of people because i don't "want" to be employed by a studio that rely on AI, then i'm just gonna do that

    • @karenreddy
      @karenreddy Рік тому

@@FloMoonYeah humans have always been absolutely needed. None of our civilization could run without humans. We need energy, and the higher our output and surplus of energy as a civilization the more we are able to specialize and create such things as AI. Without humans none of this would ever have been possible. Humans are the conclusion of millions-billions of years of evolution, culminating on this invention we are just starting, that of creating a new type of intelligence to potentially surpass ours.
Of course anyone can continue to do whatever they'd like provided they have the time and resources to do so (many likely won't have). But craft sill lose its relevance economically to society. Hobbies, for those who can, are ok. That is not under discussion. Under discussion is the fact that people will lose their living doing craft as well as just about anything else, eventually. The more complex and creative the task the more likely a profession is to be delayed in displacement. Craft will go first but some art will remain.
Creative thinkers will be able to leverage the tech to produce higher quantities of materials.
But the end game is for AI to replace all cognition, including creativity and depth of understanding, decision making.

I especially feel resistance towards the statement "If this freaks you out, quit the game; stop doing art; you're not in the right place." (Which all of this is blasphemy and fuck 'em). I am opposed to the way people often express themselves about ai in art, but it's not fear I feel.
It's... it offends me. Bloody hell it infuriates me, this idea that what I do - the heart and the human touch - doesn't have any value, and that if I fear that "AI will take my job" or if I "fear using AI" I should quit. What in the actual world -

Been playing around with MidJourne a lot lately, and I feel AI is going to be a fantastic tool FOR concept artists to use as a jumping of point. that said, I think there's gonna be a lot fewer jobs out there, since AI can replace a lot of junior roles and initial ideation, leaving mostly art direction and senior positions for the humans.

@@ivanmatveyev13 my workflow is basically 10 times faster, I can generate a lot of thumbnails in seconds to use as a jump of point, then while painting and cleaning up the generated base image, I can generate new prompts for callous or details simultaneously. Its like photo-bashing but without having to look though endless libraries for good stock images, and I can get more exact images lf I want to, or have the AI go wild and generate crazy things if I need inspiration.

Right now, there is actually a shortage of skilled artists in the games industry. With the current trend of big open-world games, game worlds are getting more and more massive, and they need more and more content. Now imagine when augmented reality kicks off... the amount of art content needed will be off the charts.

Something I realized recently is that this also lowers the bar. That teen who wants to make his own game? He was never going to be able to pay a concept artist, and not everyone has a fried who is good with art, but with AI generated art the resulting game will be of much better quality than what he could previously been able to accomplish. What one dedicated person can do by themselves is substantially expanding.

I think people greatly underestimate human’s creativity. Once you get to work along side professionals, at times, you’ll see them create shit you’d never imagine even on the same old topic. Sure, AI will come in to help as a tool in the future, bridge the gap in technical stuff. But I’m willing to bet my life it’ll never be as creative as human. At least, not in our life time or foreseeable future. Generating ideas is kind of the main point of this job after all. Plus, if people in your team do not understand a painting or idea behind it. They aren’t gonna get answer from AI. They will from artist.

This. This is why I'm not worried about the whole AI replacing artists scare. There are so many factors. I don't deny the underlying problems it's already causing but there are plenty sensible clients and consumers of art out there that still appreciate an actual process to the whole thing with another human being. AI could never replicate the experience one goes through with client and artist communicating and connecting during the art process nor can it replicate an idea made by a person who can make the effort to think outside the box . That's the amazing thing about human creativity, it's so organic.
Quite frankly they said NFTs would kill off commissioned works yet NFTs are dying if not, dead.

Imo this is like photobashing, custom brushes, using 3D models with a Photoshop overlay, etc. Its another tool you can use to your benifit in any way you would like. If you want to stay traditional you can do that, but you can also combine all the tools you have to make things faster and have the cool factor. For me personally, I really enjoy the cool factor as far as art goes, above almost all else. Learning art is still valuable, you still need to know line art, shading, and colors. So when you get lets say an AI image you can manipulate the image to your liking.
This is an example for me personally. I want to make a card game and I have been working on this for 2 years and I am enrolled into art school to learn how to do the art for the game and will probably buy a few of Trent's courses as well and possibly some other courses that I see of value to my goals. But if I can make a crazy cool scene by typing a few words in and clicking enter. Then I make my own characters and story for the game. That would be epic. Time is limited and I wont be ashamed to use tools that speed up the process of the end goal I want in mind.

It all depends, AI will always have trouble to do stylized concept art but photobashed art will get more accessible and faster which will lower its value per project but increase the amount of projects an artist can take. Even if AI is not great it will be good enough to make a series of decent sketches that looks more presentable than black and white with some massaging. I think with more and more AI tech the dev teams will get small but the amount of them will increase if the funding allows.

I don't think it will replace concept artists.. It will be a tool that they use just like Blender and Photoshop. I have seen some cool AI stuff, but I always wonder how much influence the artist had during its creation or all the changes and fixes they have made after the fact. Because most of the time, the final result does not look like something an AI would be capable of. It needs to follow parameters. For example maybe you can code a program to "color in-between the lines" or plaster an abstract collections of random brush-strokes. But you need to find the image within those brush strokes to bring out an actual scene of some sort that makes sense to a person. Otherwise its just abstract. AI is more likely going to replace the modern and abstract arts.. but it will never replace the job of a designer. It may be used as a tool though.

I think it will replace some. The volume of them.
Why have 10 people funnelling designs when They can have AI do some bulk examples, and fewer artists can take it the rest of the way.
There are videos already of graphic designers doing things that are better than -current- AI but only just by a bit, and they take like an hour but the AI does like 3 per 10+ seconds. Right now the person is irreplaceable, but many AI interations later? know knows.
SOmeone used Midjourney AI to recently win a damn art content and beat out all the actual other artists that entered genuinely. If it can take contest wins from people, then it won't be long before it costs jobs too.
I think we need protection laws and rules honestly. Like someone should not be allowed to submit AI art to an art contest; the same way someone can't take their sports car into the olympic 200 meter dash.

think about it this way; programmers had to create a super high tech program that has to take existing art, just to imitate concept art with pretty visual noise and photo filters. Few people have the discipline, honesty and intellectual and spiritual capacity to learn to make original designs and buildable, purposeful technical drawings. Creating it will be even more fun knowing you can actually create it, and not someone just trying to make a quick buck or some quick likes or clout.
