      He got more done than JFK did. LBJ had been in Congress since the 1930s and was known as a "Wheeler Dealer", Lot's of people owed him favors. After he got a Super Majority in the 1964 election he made his moves. Pushed through Medicare, Civil Rights, and Voting Rights Acts. Can you imagine where we would be today without Medicare? Republicans have tried to get rid of Medicare ever since.

    LBJ had served in both houses and knew the Senate was where you could really make a difference in terms of legislation

    • @KilgoreTrout122

      It was more that his style of leadership was more conducive to the senate since it was a body with fewer members that he could cajole more easily. Also, the only way to get any power in the house was to become a ranking member of a committee and because of the way seniority worked, it would take decades for him to move up the chain; decades he didn’t have because of his family’s history of poor health.

You can't let politicians decide how to fight a war, that happened in Afghanistan and Iraq and it may be happening in Afghanistan, but I hope Zelensky is smart enough to stay out of the way of the generals. NATO countries should provide weapons with NO restrictions, soldiers who are fighting know where to use the weapons, let them win this thing.

      Going from 16,000 US Troops in Vietnam to over a half million is not the same thing. The major problem with US commitment in Vietnam is that the US did not have a plan to WIN that war. Apparently the Joint Chiefs fought for a Tie, not to win. If the US commits to War, go to War to WIN or don't go. Operation Desert Storm is how to fight a war. Go big or stay home.

      Both were liars, though LBJ was probably a more consummate liar. LBJ was involved in the JFK assassination, and HW Bush probably was. HW was the man who for years "couldn't remember" where he was on 11/22/63, though he was 39 and a professional politician. Turned out he'd spent part of that day in Dallas - probably why he couldn't remember. Everyone else in the country who was over 4 years old at the time remembers where he/she was that day. I was 6 and I remember that day clearly. If you want to learn about some of HW's lies, his son W's lies and his family's crimes, read "Family of Secrets" by Russ Baker.

    I’ve grown to have both respect and affection for this man. I feel I owe him an apology. I did not vote for him, and I was less than happy about his elections. If I could sit with him and hear a few of his stories, it would be a very memorable occasion. I like him a great deal.

    • @smadaf
      @smadaf 3 роки тому +12

      Nowadays the focus on certain parts of him makes it too easy for some to forget
      - Alberto Gonzales
      - waterboarding
      - C.I.A. black sites
      - his support for the PATRIOT Act
      - the dishonesty about Iraqi W.M.D.s
      - much else
      - and the fact that he was willing to make a special news appearance solely to announce his supposed belief that if "activist judges" refused to protect "the sanctity of marriage" then it was time for a Constitutional amendment to make sure that people could marry the ones they wanted to marry only if they were of the 'appropriate' sex-just in an effort to get more votes in the 2004 election (after he got fewer votes than his main opponent in 2000).
      It's fine that you didn't vote for him. He's a human being and not the devil incarnate, but he also was not a good president.
      In the end, a lot of his recent popularity seems to center on his telling stories about his dad, who is dead and, in my opinion, was a better man and a better president.
