Wow! Your right. I remember having a bunch of living (former) Presidents but back at this time it was just LBJ and Nixon, and soon it would just be Nixon.
Both were warmongers- LBJ for expanding the war in Vietnam and Nixon for bombing Cambodia albeit closing out Vietnam. I think LBJ could be remembered for helping to electrify the rural areas of the country, though there is no reason to think that couldn't have been done without him. His Great Society programs didn't produce any discernible results, Medicare had no plans to pay for the increasing age of seniors, Medicaid was made unsustainable and subject to fraud, Hart-Celler flooded this nation with many people who may not have had the beat intent or capacity to integrate in American society, and Both Republicans and Democrats had factions both opposing and supporting the civil rights bills. The villification of Barry Goldwater types- who risked their lives, reputations and resources supporting desegregregation and civil rights before it was popular up until 64 for constitutional disagreements with 2 portions of the latest bill - led to a fracturing and reforming of the GOP to the form it appears to us today. Nixon I think was a flawed man and president. Whether you agree or disagree with his assessments and/or methods, it seems he was a man that looked at what was left him and tried to come out with the most favorable outcomes. Vietnam? How do we leave, but do so presenting strength, and leave our side in Vietnam with the resources to fend for themselves? The monetary system? France calling back its investments in gold threatens the dollar, since between guns and butter spending both of which were ramped up under LBJ the US no longer had the ability to do so, and even if it started other investors would cause a viscious cycle until the US was bankrupt and in bad credit standing. Well time for the Nixon Shock, cut off convertability to gold, end Bretton Woods. Keep the dollar propped up as the default currency by having OPEC nations sell oil in USD. Have them invest the surpluses in US treasuries. Simultaneously use these deals to ramp up the US' presence in the region, quell potential war against Israel, and form a military/Intel/economic bloc against the Communists, especially USSR. USSR seeking to expand power and influence? Open diplomatic and trade relationships with the PRC. Use the sino-Soviet split to the West's advantage, cement it with various proxy wars, start buying cheap manufactured goods from China. Push China and other manufacturing nations to invest their surpluses in US treasuries. Push them to buying OPEC oil as well, requiring more dollars, requiring greater sales of cheap manufactured goods. Domestic unrest? Ramp up the war on drugs in an attempt to placate or jail Black and Leftist agitators. The EPA was a good idea IMO. He really ruined himself with Watergate. If he orchestrated it , or he simply covered for those that did on their own accord, he screwed up.

2000Betelgeuse BTW, I'm not entirely against welfare, but think the way the programs were instituted combined with importation of largely poor immigrants to use them and loss of a tax base made them unsustainable. Fatherhood disappearing from poor, specifically Black, communities IMO made a cycle of reliance on them. "so how come we still have those programs?" I think we both know the answer, but it really comes down to the users of these programs+those who otherwise support them outnumber and outvote those who don't use these programs and don't support them.

Germany, Johnson purposely got us into Vietnam lying about the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Nixon eventually got us out of that war. Johnson had Nixon's campaign aircraft bugged. Nixon bombed North Vietnamese troops who had invaded both Cambodia and Laos using the "Ho Chi Minh Trail" to sneak troops and supplies into South Vietnam, this later caused friction and war between Cambodia and Vietnam. Nixon was very knowledgeable about foreign affairs, many Presidents secretly called him for advice, that includes Bill Clinton.

After this meeting LBJ's mistress reportedly said that LBJ said that after tomorrow those Kennedy's will not embarrass him again. Anyway going back to Nixon, yes he did not directly and immediately benefit from this, but he sure got back at JFK by turning a blind eye on what was going to happen in Dallas. Nixon always believed that Kennedy stole the 1960 election from him, and thay probablyis not something he would not forget. May I also add that with Kennedy out of the way, it could have also possibly clear the path again for him to run for president long term wise or in a near future, in which he eventually did. I conslusion, he was probably not involved directly, but indirectly yes and in my book and probaly many others, that makes him almost as guilty as those directly involved.

@ Toby Goodguy The only thing that has been learned is to keep on making the same mistakes over and over again. That is why I think that it's crucial that students of all ages or those who just want to learn about history do so, but more in depth. Honestly I think it should even be a requirement, as it is necessary to prepare those learning not to make the same mistakes from the past over and over again. History does tend to repeat itself, but it should not be the same useless or unfortunate outcome if you try to learn from the country's past and/or past mistakes.

There is a lot of hate towards these politicians (maybe too much than deserved) but I admire the work they did despite their flaws.
They both played political hardball and were political opponents going back to the 1940s. Probably a lot of mistrust and dislike between these two, but they were both self-made men who went to the top. Nixon called Johnson one of the greatest politicians of the 20th century.

I kind of feel bad for both men, I think none of them got any credit for the positive they did....
Momma llama In a Can I agree that Welfare and the war on poverty were mostly failures, the intend was good I think but they failed, so how come we still have those programs?
2000Betelgeuse
BTW, I'm not entirely against welfare, but think the way the programs were instituted combined with importation of largely poor immigrants to use them and loss of a tax base made them unsustainable. Fatherhood disappearing from poor, specifically Black, communities IMO made a cycle of reliance on them.
"so how come we still have those programs?"
I think we both know the answer, but it really comes down to the users of these programs+those who otherwise support them outnumber and outvote those who don't use these programs and don't support them.
2000Betelgeuse your right but at that time I don't think it mattered who was in office nobody could fix the problems with us and the world

I wonder if LBJ knew that Nixon turned the tape machine to the "Always on" position?
He probably assumed so since LBJ had his own taping system.
If there ever was a "takes one to know one" time it was during their 2 administrations.
Very likely he did because LBJ was the first president to install a taping system and have it "always on" and advised Nixon to do the same.

Yeah it is pretty noticeable. Nixon is amiable on this call (probably a lost art at this point), but seems mostly concerned about committing a faux pax with Truman’s DC service, if LBJ shows up in poor health but Nixon the sitting President - does not. Once he got that assurance that LBJ was not going, the call was basically over for Nixon. Notice how Nixon doesn’t want to talk about Vietnam at all - which LBJ bring up twice! Evidently cutting people off in conversation is a prerogative of being Commander In Chief.
@Tom Lowery they did NOT hate each other. The knew each other for years, and worked well in the House and Senate together. On the contrary, everybody hated JFK personally, of both parties.. Go figure. The real hatred was between Nixon and Reagan, but they did work well together for California.

Nixon had nothing to do with Kennedy’s death. Some of the comments here are ridiculous.
@ Ryan Scott Logan Probably not directly, but it is rumored that he did at least know it was going to happen and by him turning a blind eye about it makes him at the very least an accomplice. By him letting it happen and not trying to do something about it to at least stop it makes him indirectly involved in the matter in my book, as probably to many other's books as well.
@@dddes2328 I honestly do not believe that.Nixon was certainly not in bed with LBJ.I can see many other people involved but not Nixon. He had no plans to run again in 1964 anyway.
@@ryanscottlogan8459 Although Nixon was not that bad of a president when he became president in 68, he certainly was a vindictive individual and tried to get back at his enemies or anyone who would question him. He was also always so paranoid, and that also got the best of him. In a sense he brought upon the Watergate scandal upon himself, in which he had no choice but to resign. Had he not been so paranoid and vindictive he probably would have served out his 2nd term. I would not be surprised that he at the very least knew it was going to happen. I mean he was in Dallas the day before the assassination, supposedly for a Pepsi business meeting and arrived to New york shortly before it was announced that JFK was shot in Dallas. Anyway it is said that he also attended that famous meeting where LBJ, Hoover, Texas Oil men, in that same day before the day of the assassination.
Am pretty convinced it was CIA...recently learned Woodward was an intelligence officer just before he was hired and assigned the most important story the WP ever had.....and his contact (aka Deep Throat) ended being the FBI second in command,....and all but one of the "burglars" in Watergate, were CIA employees.....intel people all over this incident......

Have we learned anything in 60 years about endless wars?
Nope.

Howard Hunt was involved. As he himself said, he was a "benchwarmer". He was one of the 3 hobos who were photographed on-the-scene and arrested for looking suspicious. He said Cord Meyer had a strong motivation to have Kennedy killed because Kennedy had taken his wife as a mistress for about 2 years. His wife, Mary Meyer, was the sister of Ben Bradlee's wife -- Ben Bradlee the famous editor of the Washington Post. Bradlee and JFK were good friends, which is how JFK was introduced to Mary Meyer. There is actually colored home movies of JFK, Bradlee, Jackie, and others on the Presidential yacht together. Precisely that. No where on that video does Bobby Kennedy ask Lyndon why he had his brother killed. All that video shows is the well known acrimony between LBJ and Robert being used as a suggestive back drop to a murder plot when in fact they are discussing LBJ's other under handed dealings around campaigns and obtaining power.
