Frank Sinatra's In The Wee Small Hours should be a must in my opinion, it's often considered to be the first concept album. The orchestral movement flows perfectly and paired with Sinatra's un-beatable vocals, it can easily be enjoyed by anyone.
I’m glad you gave Disintegration a shoutout. While I think Seventeen Seconds is The Cure’s best album, Disintegration holds a special spot on my heart, as it’s one of my mother’s favorite albums. Every time I step into her Mitsubishi Outlander and switch on the stereo, I can expect to find it loaded in her CD drive. It’s an excellent album, without a doubt. And I’m not surprised you mentioned Dark Side of the Moon. Again, it’s a classic, and no psychedelic rock collection can be complete without it. One album I think is a vinyl necessity: Daft Punk-Discovery. It’s the ultimate blend of French house, synth, and disco, and no party is complete without it. Its also relatively cheap on vinyl: my copy cost $21, which is pretty economic for a double LP, especially considering that the CD costs just a few dollars less.
Wow! Jarrett, I'm super impressed with your selection here. It's a fantastic variety of artists and classics. As always, I learn something new every time I watch your videos. I had no idea about the Jack White Lazaretto album. I definitely want to pick one of those up. You know you're a true music lover when you recommend everything from Pink Floyd to Johnny Cash to Portishead. Haha. Love it. Looking forward to part 2!
hey Jarrett, I just came across you channel earlier today and I'm already a fan. I've just started my records collection, and I'm fixing to upgrade my turntable to get the most out of my music. Great job you do here, many thanks!!
I feel like Hounds of Love by Kate Bush could've made it onto this list. Easily one of the best albums from the 80s and I'd say its one of the best in general. Side B is called The 9th Wave, which is a musical piece of interconnected songs about a woman being swept away in an icy river and the songs chronicle that journey. Under Ice is still one of the most haunting songs I've ever heard. This album was widely been regarded as her best album and is definitely the best way to get into Kate's music since it's got popular songs like Running Up That Hill and Cloudbusting. Kate's entire back catalog was just remastered and rereleased on 180g vinyl and I've heard nothing but glowing reviews for it. Hounds of Love will definitely be the first of the remasters I get my hands on for sure lol The reason I'm talking her up so much is because she's super well known in Britain but here in the US she's almost unknown save for Running Up That Hill. Also ironically her worst selling album, The Red Shoes, performed the best of all of her albums here in the US lol
My Favurite Album's- 1. Pink Floyd - The Wall 2. Metallica - Ride The Lightning 3. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffti 4. Deep Purple - Machine Head 5. Nazareth - Razamanaz It’s my Favurites 🔥🎸
Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol Skid Row - Slave To The Grind Bruce Dickinson - Balls To Picasso Metallica - Ride The Lightning Megadeth - Rust In Peace Machine Head - The More Things Change Pantera - Far Beyond Driven ASAP - Silver And Gold Kiss - Creatures Of The Night
In the Court Of The Crimson King should totally be on here, nearly every record collector I follow on Instagram owns it, and it's an all around incredible piece of art
That was the first record I played when pulling a few out of my dad's collection. Anyway I left the album on my bed and my guitar teacher noticed and asked to see it. He asked if it was a pink label and not knowing I told him to look. Anyway he told me it was a first pressing and was sort after, so we got it check out and it's valued at £700. I was holy shit that record sat in a cupboard and we had no clue. Anyway pretty cool really got me into vinyl.
I agree with u on Michael's "Thriller" (but "Off the Wall" is good too); Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" and Jack Black "Lazaretto", but there are a few others. Carole King, "Tapestry"; Quincy Jones, "Back on the Block"; Erykah Badu, "Baduism"; India.Arie, "Acoustic Soul"; D. Parton/E. Harris/L. Ronstadt, the Trio albums; Justin Timberlake, "Justified"; RUN-DMC, "Raising Hell"...just a few.
Memorandom so you're attacking hip hop? Those rappers, I don't know how they go today, but the ones from the 90s had more music in them than you can hope to have.
Everything I enjoy is what I will buy. First thing I bought up was the entire discography of John Denver and Glen Campbell, buying up a lot of folk and country, but my latest picm ups were Sam Cooke, The Beach Boys, and Anne Murray. I do want thriller, everybody SHOULD own that.
I know this is a video on records but if anyone hasn't heard the surround sound mix of DSotM, you've got to check it out. Assuming you or someone you know has surround sound. Hell, if you can get ahold of a copy and know someone that works at a movie theater, you might be able to listen to it that way.
I really think Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run should be in everyone's collection. Not only is nearly every one of the songs on that album a hit, but Jungleland in particular is just a phenomenal piece of music
Thought I'd offer a very recent recording. The band is Puscifer (one of Maynard James Keenan's side projects) and the album is Money Shot. I bought the CD when it first came out and immediately loved it. Then, while thumbing through the selections in an obscure record shop in San Jose, CA, I spotted a double album of all remixed songs from Money Shot. Both disks are a clear/slightly greenish tint vinyl and the production is amazing. It really cannot be described, but it's absolutely my favorite record from 2016.
I have a Japanese pressing of Dark Side of the Moon and Thriller and those pressings sound great. The problem with newer record releases and re-issues is the sound is digital.
I only need 8 pieces of system components and accessories in order to play all of my extensive collection. I I assembled some HEATHKIT Components. 2 AR2 type speaker systems, a phonograph record changer upon which I'm able to play 16, 33, 45 and 78 RPM shellac and vinyl mono and stereo records. And it is possible to play a stack of 10 records at a time. I later added a 5 disc stereo Compack Disc carrousel disc changer to my HEATHKIT components. And I have a Sony am and fm stereo Boom Box upon which I'm also able to play the CD's and audio cassette tapes!
I feel like if you're gonna put a jazz record on the must own list, it's gotta be Davis or Coltrane. Kind of Blue, Blue Train, or A Love Supreme. Just my opinion though
Also on sgt pepper's, it's one of the first rock albums that faded between songs rather than having a gap between every song (Opening track into a little help, reprise into a day in the life)
The fact that you have Disintegration on this list made me love your channel more! I just bought my turntable yesterday and I'm so excited to be on this journey! :)
MY $.02 on Top albums: Beatles - Abbey Road King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King Led Zeppelin IV Eagles - Hotel California SONG OF THE DAY SUGGESTION: King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man
•In the aeroplane over the sea-Neutral Milk Hotel. •Talking Heads- Remain in Light. •Unknown Pleasures- Joy Division. •The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars- David Bowie. •Slint-Spiderland. •Kind of Blue- Miles Davis. •Trans Europe Express- Krafwerk. •Tame Impala- Lonerism. •The Dark Side of the Moon- Pink Floyd. •Doolittle- Pixies.
"Bat out of hell" by Meat Loaf. I remember when it came out- everyone (I knew) bought it. But "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John is by far the best album I've heard, simply brilliant. Every song on there is a gem, which is amazing for a double album, except perhaps for "i've seen that movie too", that's only quite good.
1. Crimes Of Passion - Pat Benatar 2. Off The Wall - Michael Jackson 3. Rebel Yell - Billy Idol 4. Bad Girls - Donna Summer 5. Spring Session M - Missing Persons 6. Beauty And The Beat - GO-GO'S 7. Control - Janet Jackson 8. Parallel Lines - Blondie 9. The Fame - Lady Gaga 10. Saturday Night Fever - Bee Gees
If you like The Dark Side of The Moon, you should not neccesarily check out The Wall. But you SHOULD check out Wish You Were here. This is (in my opinion) the best record ever made.
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile Depeche Mode - Violator David Bowie - Blackstar Tool - Undertow Rammstein - Sehnsucht Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
the only LP on this list, that i have, is Thriller. i didn't know, if there is any difference betwen my lp (it's a Bulgarian pressing) and the UK, or US release. Sgt. Pepper's is on my list too, because i'm a Beatles fan. I have two LP's and a Single in my collection, i like the most. The Beatles - Love, The Bearles Ain't She Sweet/Cry For A Shadow (Amiga Single) and R.A.M. Pietsch - Norwegian Wood.
this comment is very late but considering the fact that vinyls are becoming more and more popular I think we need to appreciate the person who catalysed this; Lana Del Rey. She really is that bridge between old and modern music and having her vinyl in your collection; specifically Born to Die, is very iconic.
Since I Left You- The Avelanches Donuts- J Dilla A Love Supreme- John Coltrane Bitches Brew- Miles Davis Aphex Twin- Selected Ambient Works Vol. 1 or Drukqs (cant go wrong with either) Madlib & MF DOOM- Madvillany Brian Eno- Ambient 1-4 series Marvin Gaye- What’s Going On Prince- Purple Rain Gas- POP These are some of my essentials and my favorite albums to listen to on wax
All the kill albums are in my house and motley Crue and def Leppard and metallica and Cinderella band and Megadeth and dokken I'm a metal head and Rock the 80s are the best and kiss is my favorite 70s rock band
Thank you for the inclusion of disintegration it's probably one of my favorite albums of all time and the cure im general always seems to go under appreciated by even the most dedicated 80s nostalgia lovers I know so it's always great to see more people giving them the recognition they most definitely deserve
Just started my vinyl collection about a month ago and my first vinyl were Joy Division - "Unknown Pleasures" and My Bloody Valentine - "Loveless" Wish I wasn't a broke college student so I could buy some more lol

Happyman1773 Yeeeesss! Let’s keep hope alive! He did say he still had to pick some up.
Even a-ha, Richard Marx, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Presley and Roxette
The buggles
For trip hop Massive Attack - Blue Lines
Hounds of Love will definitely be the first of the remasters I get my hands on for sure lol
The reason I'm talking her up so much is because she's super well known in Britain but here in the US she's almost unknown save for Running Up That Hill. Also ironically her worst selling album, The Red Shoes, performed the best of all of her albums here in the US lol
Had to come a long way down the comments before someone mentioned Kate Bush, good on ya.
This comment aged well
My Favurite Album's-

2. Metallica - Ride The Lightning
3. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffti
4. Deep Purple - Machine Head

This is all bullshit. Everyone knows that the best record is a home aerobics record from the 80's
Strawberry Jam don't forget disco
Yeah Volume 2 over vol 1 anyday.
Let's not forget the Jane Fonda workout records. And I found "Body By Jake" @ the Goodwill, a few months back.
Oh come on he said it’s just his opinion ok now leave him alone.
I have home aerobics AND the soundtrack from Saturday night fever!
I have Pink Floyd The Wall, and it’s the original 1979 release :)
One of the best presents I ever got, best album of all time (imo), thanks dad.
Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
W.A.S.P. - The Crimson Idol
Skid Row - Slave To The Grind
Bruce Dickinson - Balls To Picasso
Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Machine Head - The More Things Change
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
ASAP - Silver And Gold
Kiss - Creatures Of The Night
Mechanix Best taste of music this comment section I’ve seen yet.
Such a great list, and you have a chill personality that is easy to listen to.
In the Court Of The Crimson King should totally be on here, nearly every record collector I follow on Instagram owns it, and it's an all around incredible piece of art
Aaron Hodgetts I
Mr. Fripp won't copyright strike your personal copy, if you buy one...
I agree. King Crimson is amazing
>No Death Grips
>No Kendrick
>No Illmatic
the melon would be disappointed in you
Layzah he doesn't like hip hop
bottomless pit best album of all time
Yeah, because he obviously has _taste._
Memorandom so you're attacking hip hop? Those rappers, I don't know how they go today, but the ones from the 90s had more music in them than you can hope to have.
kendrick and death grips especially blow ass
RANDOM. ACCESS. MEMORIES. That album sounds BEAUTIFUL especially on vinyl.
I personally also love "I am" (Earth wind and fire) and Vulfpeck.
Jarret has Thriller on this list ! Legends appreciate each other !!!
ABBA's Arrival and/or The Visitors should be there!
All great selections Jarret, we love Johnny Cash as well, his "American Recordings" with Rick Rubin are essential! Keep up the great work sir!
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the key of life
Jackson 5 - Diana Ross presents the Jackson 5
Al Green - Greatest hits
D'angelo - Voodoo
to name just a few
I know this is a video on records but if anyone hasn't heard the surround sound mix of DSotM, you've got to check it out. Assuming you or someone you know has surround sound. Hell, if you can get ahold of a copy and know someone that works at a movie theater, you might be able to listen to it that way.
Since my record collection is entirely Michael and Janet Jackson, I own thriller, bad, etc
I really think Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run should be in everyone's collection. Not only is nearly every one of the songs on that album a hit, but Jungleland in particular is just a phenomenal piece of music
Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous, HIStory, Blood On The Dance Floor & Invincible are the only Records you need.
why would you support such a bad person
@@kingcrimson2168 not a bad person but ok
Thought I'd offer a very recent recording. The band is Puscifer (one of Maynard James Keenan's side projects) and the album is Money Shot. I bought the CD when it first came out and immediately loved it. Then, while thumbing through the selections in an obscure record shop in San Jose, CA, I spotted a double album of all remixed songs from Money Shot. Both disks are a clear/slightly greenish tint vinyl and the production is amazing. It really cannot be described, but it's absolutely my favorite record from 2016.
Dirt by Alice In Chains should defiantly be in every ones collection
I have a Japanese pressing of Dark Side of the Moon and Thriller and those pressings sound great. The problem with newer record releases and re-issues is the sound is digital.
The Stone Roses debut is a must
I only need 8 pieces of system components and accessories in order to play all of my extensive collection.
+Josh Mentzer you’ll like part 2 😉
Josh Mentzer also schetches of Spain!!
Also on sgt pepper's, it's one of the first rock albums that faded between songs rather than having a gap between every song (Opening track into a little help, reprise into a day in the life)
Dave Brubeck quartet - Time Out
Artem Priadko I Love that song!
George Doughly it’s an album...
The fact that you have Disintegration on this list made me love your channel more! I just bought my turntable yesterday and I'm so excited to be on this journey! :)
MY $.02 on Top albums:
Beatles - Abbey Road
King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
Led Zeppelin IV
Eagles - Hotel California
SONG OF THE DAY SUGGESTION: King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man
Tim Gainer Exactly! This list was missing King Crimson
Recently ordered Court of the Crimson King. Waiting excitedly for its arrival.
Got some of those also
Billy Joel's album The Stranger, fabulous album!
Song of The Day Suggestion :
The Jackson Five - Corner of the Sky
1. Crimes Of Passion - Pat Benatar
2. Off The Wall - Michael Jackson
3. Rebel Yell - Billy Idol
4. Bad Girls - Donna Summer
5. Spring Session M - Missing Persons
6. Beauty And The Beat - GO-GO'S
7. Control - Janet Jackson
8. Parallel Lines - Blondie
9. The Fame - Lady Gaga
10. Saturday Night Fever - Bee Gees
If you like The Dark Side of The Moon, you should not neccesarily check out The Wall. But you SHOULD check out Wish You Were here. This is (in my opinion) the best record ever made.
Another good one to have is London Calling. It’s one of my favorite albums I own.
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
Depeche Mode - Violator
David Bowie - Blackstar
Tool - Undertow
Rammstein - Sehnsucht
Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar
Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
great picks but the 3 official releases of antichrist superstar are almost impossible to obtain
@@krisertoff1192 They are extremely expensive and it hurts me.
really enjoying your videos...thanks for making them! :)
Charles Bradley - Changes
the only LP on this list, that i have, is Thriller. i didn't know, if there is any difference betwen my lp (it's a Bulgarian pressing) and the UK, or US release.
Darude - Sandstorm.
projectgoatse are you seriously still using that joke?
Paul McCartney aRe YoU sTiLl UsInG tHaT jOkE
I own and cherish the original Thriller album from the 80's, mint condition too ;)
this comment is very late but considering the fact that vinyls are becoming more and more popular I think we need to appreciate the person who catalysed this; Lana Del Rey. She really is that bridge between old and modern music and having her vinyl in your collection; specifically Born to Die, is very iconic.
Since I Left You- The Avelanches
Donuts- J Dilla
A Love Supreme- John Coltrane
Bitches Brew- Miles Davis
Aphex Twin- Selected Ambient Works Vol. 1 or Drukqs (cant go wrong with either)
Madlib & MF DOOM- Madvillany
Brian Eno- Ambient 1-4 series
Marvin Gaye- What’s Going On
Prince- Purple Rain
Gas- POP
These are some of my essentials and my favorite albums to listen to on wax
What about Massive Attack - Mezzanine?
AM/KG home video And Blue Lines
One of the best of the decade I thought Liz is such a moving singer
Can’t wait for part two !!!
What about KISS? KISS Alive was a masterpiece.😱
All the kill albums are in my house and motley Crue and def Leppard and metallica and Cinderella band and Megadeth and dokken I'm a metal head and Rock the 80s are the best and kiss is my favorite 70s rock band
1:14 I've seen those being sold in hmv (I am also from the UK and hmv is like a record store)
You forgot Tijuana Brass’ Whipped Cream and Other Delights. Everyone has that album.
Vulgar Vinyl so does every goodwill store. Lol.
I met a guy at an estate sale over the summer who was buying a copy of it, claiming that it was his 15th copy.
Ian V. Raybeck it’s EVERYWHERE
Simply for the cover! The music is pretty great too, but that cover, man!
for awhile I thought the honors went to Englebert Humperdink but no no no I even seen tijuana brass at the dump once
I had to sub... you seem authentic... I’m falling in love with vinyls.
Sade-Diamond Life
Great to see The Cure made it to your list.
Prince- Sign 'O' the times
I've got Sgt. Pepper and 3 copies of Dark Side of the Moon. Pet Sounds is a great album to get too.
Are you interested in getting Sgt pepper? Love the channel!
Love Sgt. Pepper. I subscribed to your channel.
The new Sgt Pepper release is amazing
Thank you for the inclusion of disintegration it's probably one of my favorite albums of all time and the cure im general always seems to go under appreciated by even the most dedicated 80s nostalgia lovers I know so it's always great to see more people giving them the recognition they most definitely deserve
Iron Lung - Black Marble
yes!
A great album to own is Violator by Depeche Mode. My favorite album of all time. That and Black Celebration.
Just started my vinyl collection about a month ago and my first vinyl were Joy Division - "Unknown Pleasures" and My Bloody Valentine - "Loveless"
Wish I wasn't a broke college student so I could buy some more lol
Hey is your copy of Unknown Pleasures red?
@@theunknowncommenter3444 Nope. It is black
Grover Washington wine light, literally my first vinyl and I love it.
Song of the day: For Tomorrow-Blur
Proud to say that i have Michael Jackson's Thriller in perfect condition from 1982🙌
