Wow! This video saved me over $1000 (what Ford, in Canada, quoted me to replace my 2013 Escape backup camera that worked intermittently for a few years and mostly gave me the ‘contact dealership’ message.) This was a BRILLIANT and easy fix and now I have a brand new camera for under $75 (Canadian) and a small innocuous screw (which I still have to.make black….but even that isn’t necessary) in the bracket in case a replacement is ever needed again. Thanks so much for posting this and I’m happy to help anyone through the repair as well since I just did it today. :)

My thoughts exactly. The dealership will charge a CRAZY amount. Thank you for your input and comment. Much appreciated, and I'm so happy that this helped.

Wow thanks. Worked in 5 mins and saved the $700 Ford wanted for the replacement. PLUS, added bonus, you showed me where the little clips are on the plastic piece. I got lucky and used one of the small 17-18 screwdrivers I had with me to get it out without breaking the clips. :)

EXCELLELNT. Happy this worked for you. I had a friend who had her Rav 4 stereo replaced for over $1K. If she would have done a little DIY homework, I know she could have saved a LOT of money just like you. Thanks for the comment! I know that I'm commenting on the stereo, but the same for the camera. FORD wanted WAY too much to replace the backup camera, so my simple DIY saved the day. Thanks again!

Matt, I viewed the video, ordered an Amazon camera, and was able to use my "non-mechanic- skills" to install the unit. I bumped into a couple of installation issues, but no real problems. My "however," was that the camera, in reverse, worked great, including the "guidelines" for the backup view. But when I put the car in forward gear, the rear-view camera remained "on." So I put the car in Park, shut it off, started it again, with the same results. The work-around I found was to put the gear back in Park, and them quickly move it past reverse to either Neutral, or Drive, and it by-passed Reverse and the backup camera. I can continue to do that, it's just a bit inconvenient. But if it saves me several hundred dollars, I'll learn to live with it. I considered returning the camera, and ordering another one, but decided to send in this comment, in hopes you may have another suggestion. Anyway;....Thanks for the video, and/or any helpful suggestions you may have on the above.

Hey, thanks for the comment/question. Your situation is a very "strange" one that I've never heard of. I wonder if it may be more of a software situation that may require some sort of update or actual replacement of the unit. If this doesn't cause you much grief, then I say go with it as you are able. If it DOES, however, disturb you, then I would recommend connecting with the vendor to see if they have a remedy or could send a replacement. It would be GREAT if it is just a camera replacement, but it might require an entire unit replacement. Another thing you can try if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks is purchasing another backup camera (you can get them from amazon pretty cheap) and simply replace the camera yourself to see if that helps. I am very curious to see what you discover. Thanks again for the input, and all the best to you!

Thanks for sharing. I want to ask how to find the right location for the screw? is that suppose to be the same palce where the clip located? Thanks

If you break the clip on the right, then place the screw on the left. That's what happened in my case, and it totally worked. All the best, and thanks for the comment!

any chance you could do a video or have already done a video for replacing rear camera for a 2013 Ford Explorer?

Will this work if your getting a message that says when in reverse contact dealership. Camera shows nothing? Please help

    • @mattsworlddiy

Did you replace the camera because there was an issue with the original camera? If so, what was that reason. My original camera would only work randomly, so I decided to change it. When it did not work, there was either "fuzz" on the screen or the image was upside down (very common). When I made the change, there were no issues at all. Actually, the image seemed more clear than ever. If you are getting this message, I would not bother with the dealership. Instead, I would see if you could get a replacement camera from the seller. Communicate with them that the item you received was faulty. The reason I say not to contact the dealership is because they will be happy to charge you a TON of money and make absurd recommendations. Wishing you the best and keep me posted!
