- Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian has been elected as Iran’s new president, after beating his hardline conservative rival Saeed Jalili by nearly three million votes.
Speaking after the result was announced, he said he would extend his hand to all Iranians.
Dr Pezeshkian, a 71-year-old heart surgeon and member of the Iranian parliament, is critical of Iran’s notorious morality police and caused a stir after promising “unity and cohesion”, as well as an end to Iran's “isolation” from the world.
Millions of people boycotted the elections over the lack of choice in the candidates, dominated by Islamic hard liners, and the impossibility of real change as long as the supreme leader tightly controls policies.

Women vote in Iran. Out of 50% of the people who participated in the elections, 44% voted for Saeed Jalili. So please don't speak on behalf of Iranian women. Meanwhile, where in the world have we had elections with 100% participation? In Iran, the highest participation at the peak of hope for changes was 80%. It cannot be said that everyone who did not vote is against the government.

The BbC prides itself in reporting the events only after they have been fact checked, yet this morning they were repeating the figures that the regime in Tehran has put out as if it were the gospel. The guy hadn't even been confirmed. I was up at 5 am when the news presenter started the morning bulletin with the news of this guys ' election '. Nothing had been confirmed yet in Iran!!!!! Under the islamic republic system, every time a supposed reformer has become the president, your idea has been hoped for by the majority of the people but has had no results. This is why this time around, the majority did not vote. As long as the supreme leader holds all the important powers, nothing significant will change in Iran.
So we are too believe that Iran holds legitimate elections as a democratic country, and people have the right to vote for pre selected candidates chosen by the ayatollah, just like the previous president of Iran who executed the protesters who stood against the killing of Masha Amini for standing up against the opression of women???...

I think people voted for him because they could understand him better in the TV debates and people are hoping that things can improve economically if the sanctions can be removed but it all remains to be seen. Yes, more accurately, it means, “of the doctors”. He’s a doctor - I imagine his ancestors were doctors as well, hence choosing that surname ~100 years ago when surnames became required in Iran.

I am amazed that this so called journalist is talking about pezeshkian as if he wasn’t the same person who mandated Hijab for women and men few. Months before even Khomaine ordered it for whole country in 1979!! People change. Many of the Islamist politicians in Iran have moderated themselves after seeing the damage radicalism has done to the country.
