For the curious, an arming sword was one handed. a long sword could be one or two handed (what is commonly called a bastard sword). So at what point is a long sword a great sword?

To answer your question, a long sword is wearable, like a traditional hand-and a-half, a great sword is one that is two dang big to wear comfortably or drawn easily (like a zweihander or claymore) and must be carried around.
