We sincerely hope that the tips we have shared with you do indeed give you a more enjoyable experience when visiting a Renaissance Faire or Festival!! If you have any tips that we did not cover that you think are important, share them below! That way everyone can benefit and have the best time possible. 😁
Just as a major thing I considered, if you're going in costume, break it in before you go. Wear it a few times for a bit and walk and work it in. It's the same kind of thing as with a new pair of shoes, you adjust to the gear and tend to do better with fewer issues in the long run.
I’ve been thinking that the name should be changed to “Fantasy Faire” as it’s more inclusive and more accurate…it’s not 1973 anymore, 😢 anyway I love seeing people’s creativity!
@@rob3998 That would, likely end up confusing a lot of people with the term. There are also a lot of faires that don't use the term in it such as the Kentucky Highlands Faire
Oh I got a tip: to the community please don’t gatekeep peoples outfits and costumes. I’m speaking as a cosplayer and costumer. I saw comments on other people’s outfits making really mean spirited comments on how fairs “should be” and they shouldn’t allow things like the mushroom dresses or dnd inspired stuff. I don’t know where people thing this is appropriate but people put a ton of effort into their costumes to have fun. I think as a tip from me, people shouldn’t gatekeep.
Completely agree with this! Renaissance Faires and Festivals have changed so much in the last 15 years to be more inclusive of the cosplayer that wants to wear whatever creation they made, and it’s awesome! We always admire when people show up in renaissance period outfits, but we admire them just as much as those who show up dressed as a mushroom, Disney Princess, or dnd character. We all need to support each other!
Oooh, I love this one. If you paid to get in, you can wear whatever you want. You subsidize the participant's fantasies, right? The in-word for a paid customer is "Turkey"--embrace it! If you get any snottiness from a "cast member," flash your tickets, point out the insanity of offending the paying customers, and say "where's your Guild Master?"
I really like creativity yet I would really like more effort put in for an actual renaissance style or even medieval. It’s sort of seems like people are just mocking the renaissance in the dress, Star Trek PS everybody wore hats.
Self care, yes STRECH your legs the night before, take CBD relax oil- gummy, or chamomile tea night before -hydrate. Also sit in a chair 🪑 or rock see the shows and relax l, take breaks. Drink 3 bottles of water minimum EaRLIER than you think! Also wear a hat 👒 it will shade you. Hamstring STRECHes and take breaths In your corset. Put massage lotion on, I use reflexology
Another reason for cash: most food vendors, stage performers, and street buskers rely on tips. Tipping is not required, but if you can afford the extra, I encourage you to plan for it. I usually bring an extra $20 in ones and fives specifically for performer tips, and add an extra dollar per food item because that's what I can afford. After years of attending Ren Faires, I prefer tipping over buying a souvenir and deliberately build that into my budget for the day.
Tip #6: strategic zippers or elastic waistbands! If planning to imbibe and bladder communication is failing at middle age plan to make going to the loo expedient. Drinking coffee before leaving the house for an hour to hour and a half drive might put you in a bad spot in the parking lot also so might need to have containers in the car and a blanket or sun shields for privacy screens in the parking lot. Faire thee well!
@@AzraelThanatos We are noobs. Went to PARF last day two seasons back and were smitten. Full season suscribers last season. Didn't know the 15 sec rule. With my bladder and drinking coffee, tea, or adult beverages, it's more like a 5 second rule ! Sewn a zipper down my cheap beerfest lederhozen pants for quick acess last Oktoberfest. Super help. Looking closely at real lederhosen there is a front flap it seems, I have to wonder now if it's for bathroom ease.
@@JnJShiffler The rule originated from the theater and film industry. Mainly to both avoid hygiene issues and keep costumes from being ruined. That spread to a lot of other things because it's an easy thing to remember. I learned about it at a larp from someone who worked ren faires.
I'm from Texas and frequent the Sherwood Forest Faire. These are things I've learned. Stay on grounds if possible. Or stay close. Our faire has camp grounds and it is super fun and really immerses you in the spirit. Make time to relax. Shows and events are great but make time for rest and breaks. Don't be afraid to split from the group if you came with one. Its ok to go enjoy an activity alone. (Provided you're old enough and feel safe) Be open to making friends. Whether actor, visitor, or staff, dont be afraid to reach out and be friendly. New friends make it a great experience and return trips extra special
my favorite summer goth/faire garb tip is: bring a plant mister, plastic or aesthetic that you can hang on your belt, and mist your fishnet tights if you feel like you're getting too hot! it will cool you as it evaporates
Dressing for the weather can't can't be emphasized enough ... Me and my friends went to the PA Faire on opening day in August this year ... It was a so hot and humid I was pretty much down to my kilt and no shirt for the day ... And then we visited the NY Faire in Tuxedo Lake for their last day in October, And I total over estimated the weather and just wore my kilt and T-shirt. I froze the entire day.
I am the sewist who makes costumes for myself, my mother, and friends. My mother focuses so much on fabric appearance, she never takes material in mind. She has found this polyester curtain she has fallen in love with, and wants to wear it as a cloak. A polyester cloak to an event in August. She sweats when the weather gets above 65°F.
My biggest tip as a pale princess: SUNSCREEN AND SHADE! Get a parasol, hat, etc. Unless you apply sunscreen 10 times a day it won't be enough (depending how much shade the faire has) so I suggest avoiding sun exposure all together where possible.
Regarding the third tip, there's a picture on the Internet of a guy who wanted to dress up as the Witch King, but he wanted his feet to be comfortable. So, he cleverly disguised his crocs with PLA foam as boots 😂
One tip I would add, OK, a few, is get there early. Especially late in the season. All fairs work a little different, but PA does a soft opening, so you can get in and start the day early. I makes it easier to grab a bite to eat or check out some vendors before the heavy crowds hit. Along the same lines, get to shows early, particularly to big events like the joust.
YES! So many people arrive mid day and get stuck in long lines because everyone else had the same idea. Go a bit earlier, close to opening, so you miss the mid day rush.
never been to PA fair, but my experience in Georgia, Carolinas, and Minnesota fair is to aim to get to the parking lot ~30-45 minutes before open. There won't be a big line to park yet, you'll be able to see the opening show at the gate, and get in with the first rush! I also like to go straight to the back of the renaissance festival, grab some breakfast, and then start shopping back to front, so that you're minimizing your lines and crowds in the morning!
If you have the time, I would recommend getting involved! My experience with character acting and stage combat in the local Medieval Faire are times that I will cherish forever!
For the Michigan Ren Fest, if you want to park close, come an hour or and hour and a half early. Also, pack some food in a cooler and keep it in your vehicle. I love the food BUT at peak times, the lines are LOOOOONG. My daughter is hypoglycemic and one year (after the pandemic shut down), we ended up in four lines that ran out of food before we got to the front. (There was also a labor shortage which caused issues in their kitchens.). The next year we ate some of the food before peak times, but ended up eating our main meals in our car. It was much more comfortable, and eased our minds, knowing that we could eat when necessary.
I've never been to one of these, but from my recent research this community looks incredible. I've defiantly played my fair share of DnD and role playing games in my life. Which makes this even more appealing to me. Makes sense why most places there won't accept card. They probably see it as some sorta of dangerous witchcraft. "Behold, It's a card! All of my money is held here in this flimsy rectangular device in a world of digital banking, I need you to use it to complete our business"
The Renn community is amazing! You are welcome to join us in the Shire! Costuming is simple and fun! Most of the shopping can be found at thrift stores and you can build your costume over years to complete your look. Peasant to King, princess to fairy, you can be whoever you wish and your level of emersion is totally up to you. It's always a friendly and memorable time. Welcome, friend, welcome!
Sean, if you are into those games, you definitely need to make your way out to a Renaissance Faire or Festival! Do you know which one is closest to you? We like your reasoning behind why cards aren’t accepted, but sadly, the reason is a lot less intriguing than that. Lol. It comes down to the infrastructure not being there to operate the system needed to take the cards. Most merchant vendors will accept cards because they use a reader system that attaches to their mobile device, but the Faire’s own stands aren’t set up for that.
Just note that every fare is a little different. and The biggest reasonal I don't take cards just because they're in the middle of nowhere and don't get Reception
3:06 Sounds like an additional check *BEFORE* you get in line: check whether or not a vendor takes Cash Only or accepts Card. I've gotten in line before and waited for a good amount of time before I realized that I could *only* use cash
These are all such helpful tips! Staying hydrated is key for me I find I can tolerate heat better if I hydrate and wear natural fabrics. Also love PARF!!! It’s such a great Faire
I always love having a roll of dollar coins. They are great to tip performers with, or pay for food, and are gold color so they totally keep with the theme. Can go to a bank in advance and ask for a roll of them. Nothing like dropping some "gold" for a good performance.
Michigan Renfest has themed weekends which are very fun to participate in. Opening weekend is always pirates I think, they always have a Viking weekend, and so on. By no means do you need to stick to the theme but it's fun to check the theme in advance to help you pick an outfit when you're indecisive or would like to be a part of the larger group/theme. Remember it's all about having fun so do what makes you happy. :)
Exactly…have FUN!! The theme of the weekend sometimes plays into some of the entertainment that is offered for that weekend, so that’s another reason to check what the theme will be.
All good tips. I noticed several things different about the PA Faire than the Michigan Renaissance Festival that we go to (and that we went to yesterday). Your crowds look TINY! Several time the Michigan Faire has had to stop admitting patrons because they were at capacity. Also, per the internet. The PA fair is 35 acres, while the Michigan fair is almost 10 times that! And there is no pavement for the Michigan Faire, and no Air conditioning that I am aware of. Your faire looks like it would be very fun to attend. You should come visit the Michigan faire sometime!
I just cashed out like $450 just for the Ren I'm going to on Sunday and even then I worked at places for the past two weeks to get more money. I can't wait to go again after 6 years! I was pretty alone as an 11-year-old going with my brother who was a staff member but I'm now 17 and can't wait to have a better experience!
These were such great tips! Thank you! From my experience a couple I would add are to prehydrate. I bring packets of electrolytes to add to my water- it helps prevent emergencies when you notice you’re getting overheated. Last- it can be hard to sit in a port a potty with lots of skirts on & keep them clean. Teach yourself to use a stand to pee device before you go to the faire! Some have their own carrying case, some are disposable, find what works for you. After a day of drinking folks are hitting the floors walls and ceilings in those portables
A tip I follow is to always have small bills in case the vendors don’t necessarily have a lot of change on hand. I usually look like a stripper or server paying with ones and fives.
I am from Texas and love our Ren Fest at Mission Todd. It is a great time. Loved the part about money. I don’t think we have Coin of the Realm but it would be cool if they did.
You two are truly special creators. These tips and tricks are amazing and they truly helped me further my knowledge about the ren faire. So thank you very much for making this.
The algorithm is what brought me here; I think a goal will be to someday pay a visit to PA in October. Bristol runs 9 weekends but all of them are July and August plus labor day weekend, and the heat and sun are NO JOKE! Reapply that sunscreen!
Those are some brutal months to attend a Faire! Definitely try to visit in October…the brisk Autumn air and the falling leaves upon the Shire is a really neat thing to experience
Permit me to share with all of you a story of how one venture to the faire proved to be a LITERAL wash out for my family and I. Once, many years ago (I forget exactly when;) the day started out pretty well. There were only some slight traces of clouds in the sky and according to the weather station, there was (supposedly) a 40% chance of rain. Things were going smoothly...until we felt some slight raindrops falling on our heads, which caused us to put the hoods of our coats up. At first, we thought it would just be a passing drizzle and that it would eventually clear up. THAT'S when it REALLY got bad...it soon rained so hard that we and two others had to seek refuge under the cover of a small booth (known as the Fairy Booth, I think.) It rained so hard that eventually, they had to close down the faire the rest of that day. Thankfully, we had rooms at the Hampton Inn right across the street; so, the drive back to there wasn't so long. But after that, we've been lucky on our visits to the faire...that is, until COVID hit and the Hampton Inn closed down permanently in 2018. The Viking Weekend on the 17th and 18th will be our first official return to the shire of Mount Hope in ages. I just hope the weather will hold up, when that time comes...but since it's the Fall, I doubt heavy downpours will be happening
The weather for Viking Weekend is looking very promising! The weather at the Mt Hope Shire can do some interesting things. Sometimes it does the opposite and it could be raining down the road but not at the Faire. 😮 We’ve been at PRF when they had to cancel the Ultimate Joust because of the rain, and then they did a shortened Finale in Song at a covered stage before sending everyone home a couple hours early.
I used to live in PA and LOVED Mt. Hope. That sounds like a terrible weekend. COVID sucked. I've been sewing and waiting for the quarantine to end. Haven't been to a big event in two years, and I'm JONESING.
Season tix are the way to go! This is our first year with season tickets and are having a blast. Takes all the pressure off of trying to see everything in a day. We’ve been catching more of the smaller shows knowing we catch a crowded big show next time. We’ve already been there 4 times this season, so the rest of the season is just gravy. Even if we pop in for the awesome food and catch a show or two and head out, the pass makes it possible. Only regret is we didn’t know about the holiday open house discount, but we’ll be on it next year. Cool video. Only other tip I would have mentioned was purchasing return tickets before you leave which are a great discount. Hazzah!
That’s what we’re saying! Those season tickets make the Faire more enjoyable than you could ever imagine!! About the return to the past tickets, we were informed by the Faire that they are currently NOT offering them. Not at the gate or online (like last year).
@@FromtheHobbitHole thanks for update on return tickets. I was not aware that they are not doing it currently. Hope to see you there someday. I enjoy the videos
You’re welcome! We were looking for the return to the past tickets during the first two weeks of Faire, and when we didn’t see them offered inside the gate or through an email that accompanied you using your date specific ticket (like they did last year), we called into the Mt Hope Estate office and inquired. That’s how we found out that they aren’t offering it this year. Hopefully they bring it back, or at the very least offer a “two day special” where you can buy entry for any two Faire days for the combined cost of a regular ticket and what used to be the price for a return to the past ticket. But that’s us just wishing! Thank you for enjoying our videos, and if you see us at the Faire, definitely say hello!
Great tips young kids! Looking forward to the Celtic weekend so I can put in my kilt without any guilt and run through the shire like crazy young squire!
I had a great time at the Edgewood, NM Renaissance Fair today. I love Celtica the awesome celtic metal band and the other Viking band. They were badass.
I'm from Western Wa ,and this is perfect because I'm going to TudorCon this year and visiting the PA Rennfaire the first weekend in Sept. I'm so pumped!
So glad I came across your video! After being associated with the Arizona Renaissance Festival since 1999, I am now living in lower, slower Delaware (originally I am from Maryland and got the Ren faire hook @ Crownsville). Sold my royal costume but saved the peasant stuff for just this occasion. Hope to see you there in the fall - HUZZAH!
Welcome back to this part of the country! Definitely say hello if you see us this upcoming season. We’ve heard amazing things about ARF from some of our friends that are performers, like Randal Piper.
I'm going to be attending my first ever ren faire this year, and I'm very excited!! Obviously with me being a cosplayer I am planning to do a costume, a certain smoldering thief if you catch my drift since the joy of NO WIG!! I'm doing my homework on the basic musts, like what to 100% bring and such!!
This Faire is over 40 years old so it’s had the time to build up to this level of substance. A lot of Faires throughout the country are more tent based.
All excellent tips. I would add if you come by bus, make sure you're there in plenty of time to not miss your ride home. That may be the last bus of the day
My tips everybody is to enjoy the fair get into it get into your second personality the one you dressed as engaged with people laugh and smile compliment other people's outfits but remember to get into the character you are dressed as and play That's what these😊days are for😊 and my last tip always always hydrate! Have fun no matter what fair you're at and enjoy the characters that are there
I’m going to my first Ren Faire this year, and the season passes cost less than 3 GA tickets. I’m planning on going multiple times with multiple groups of friends since there’s more there than I could see/do in one day, so definitely worth the price.
Iris, we wish you the best experience and good luck with your attempt to stay in character the whole time! If you can do it, you should consider trying out to be one of the actors on cast at your local Ren Faire 😉
I live in NC and this upcoming weekend I’ll be going to the Ren fair I’m so exited I just hope it’s good since it is the last weekend my costume is a female version of Robin Hood lol
OMG, I absolutely ♥LOVE ♥ that your faire has that Coin of the Realm option!! I wish my own faire did that, that is EXCELLENT. What a great option for getting that feeling of immersion!
@@FromtheHobbitHole ua-cam.com/video/1gjPcn3HoRk/v-deo.html I don't live in Georgia anymore unfortunately, but I know so many of the local performers here and it's still the "home" faire to me. Ours is set in Henry VIII's time, so it's always a surprise to see which queen we will get from one year to the next.
PA definitely has an incredible Faire! We’ve heard from people who travel to different Faires that the one in CO is quite beautiful. It’s actually on our bucket list to go check it out!
I'm going to my first ren faire in a few years in august but it's the one in Pittsburgh I would have loved to go the one in tuxedo NY because that's the one I grew up with, but Pittsburgh is closer to us now. I really feel like Im in my place at ren Faires. I can't wait!
Living in GA, I totally get the summer heat aspect. RenFest is a lot of fun, but it can get pretty expensive. Thankfully, the second of the two shops that I visited this past year accepted a card because my mum severely underestimated the amount of money I would need for purchases.
the ren faire at sleepy hollow Iowa is a lot smaller than the PA one and a lot flatter and since it's in the middle of Iowa it can get extremely hot like it could feel like you are in the Sahara Desert, but there are still a lot of activities and shops to see. the only downside to the faire here is that its only three weekends out of September and its already over. other than that, I'm looking forward to next year's ren faire because I might have an actual costume to wear. (If you've ever played the game for honor, I will be going for a war lord look, war lord is a Viking)
❤ so excited to see pa renfaire! It's a few hours away from. Me and the faire I go to every year! I had the best experience when dress as fairies with my friends. We were dressed as spring, summer and fall. The friend that was going to be winter couldn't make it. One cast member asked if the fairy hunter got winter, by the end of the day it felt like the whole cast was in on the joke.
I was totally waiting for the hydration tip and I was saying, "hydrate hydrate hydrate" right along with you lol. Parasols are a life save, too, but I'm from Texas and our faires got HOOOTTTT, so they sell them. Do they have parasols at the PA faire? * chuckles * Stanley was feeling GOOD, wink wink. Season passes are 100000% the way to go! WHOA 40% discount is a bargain, dang! We've recently moved to NC. We're going to have to take a trip up to PA sometime and check out the faire! Tip: Also don't be afraid to interact with the paytrons wandering around in garb. We put a lot of time, effort, (and especially money!) into our hobby. It never hurts to tell someone you love their look.
Just found your channel. Love the Mt Hope Faire! Been there three times now. Unfortunately, my Fiance and I couldn't make it this year, but we'll be going next year for sure, and it'll be the first time I'll be going in costume. Cheers, gave you a sub!
Thank you so much, Darrell! We have not been to MDRF, personally, but we know of a lot of people that have and they talk very highly of it. One of these years, we will make it down there!
I go to the PA renfaire like every weekend so its awesome that i just found this channel...although now I have to go through all these vids and see if I can spot myself!
That’s awesome! Having to watch all of our Faire videos doesn’t seem like a horrible thing to have to do. 😉😆 Do you have a specific costume you wear each week?
Im usually in a black tank top with either a red and black kilt, or black pants. Im usually carrying a greatsword. I believe I saw you guys by the entrance two weeks ago taking pictures. You had the black outfit with the one shoulder pad and she was a valkyrie. That was before I found the channel lol
That was us! We’ll be posting those pictures in the coming weeks on our Instagram and Facebook. Your looks definitely sound familiar, like we’ve seen you around the Shire as well.
Tip #6: Let your hair down, enjoy yourself, get ito the swing of it. Don't go and be a stuck up sticky beak. Wear a costume! Doesn't have to be anything grand. Tip #7: Prepare for the weather - some days in Sept and Oct can be quite cool, sometimes it's rainy. Wear comfy shoes - be prepared to stand in line for food and especially drinks (beer and wine)...
i heard it’s bad if you don’t match the theme of the weekend? is that true? i want to wear a pretty fairy-like dress but the themes never match my love for fairies!
I wouldn't say your idea would be "bad" or out of place. IMHO, Faeries would be considered part of that universe, along with witches, wizards, goblins, etc. It's a fantasy, a whimsy. I've thought of going as Terry Gilliam from MP&THG - banging cocoanuts together as I hop around the grounds. My dream costume is to go dressed as a "browncoat" aka Malcom Reynolds from Firefly/Serenity...
We tend to try and match the weekends with our costumes simply because it’s fun, but we don’t always do it. It’s not “bad.” So if you can only make it to Viking Weekend and you want to dress like a fairy…go for it! You could also make a Viking Fairy. 😉 That’s something you hardly ever see. Also, the first weekend of the PA Faire is now Fairies and Fantasy theme!
I'd add one - come early enough to get good parking! At the KC Faire, the only parking lot that is surfaced at all (gravel) fills up very early. The rest are 'lines in a mowed field'. One year I twisted my ankle just getting to the front gate and hobbled my way from play to play the rest of the day LOL.
LOL. I attend Viking events, which get SERIOUSLY challenging during the hot months. There is little way to keep cool in layers of linen and wool. Keeping DAMP helps. It doesn't hurt the cloth, and goes a long way towards keeping you cool. Frequent light misting helps tremendously. I would go as far as making a set of "Viking" kit for the Renn faires that is made from more light modern materials. It wouldn't pass for the reenactor set, but there is self-defense involved. Full Icelandic kit is MISERABLE in southern California in the summer. It was never this hot in Reykjavik. 110 degrees f last time. you want to wear a tank top and shorts, but you are required to wear a full-length long-sleeve linen underdress under an overdress of wool. I own fur/wool outerwear but haven't worn it since I moved here. I so envy the Romans in the summertime. Thank you friends! Your tips are great. Just wanted to ADD one!
WOW!!! $125 bucks for a season pass…WOW !!!! Our home fair is The Texas Renaissance Festival and for the 2022 season a season pass was $300 bucks and a “Gold” season pass was $575 bucks which included preferred parking which is a little closer to the front gate which I believe is basically the first 10 rows of parking.
And one last thing, a very dear friend has recently taken on the role of Costume Director at the Pensilvania Renaissance Festival, MaritaBeth is a very sweet lady, please take good care of her, we miss her greatly here in Texas.
The price for season passes just went up for the 2023 season of PRF, but it still didn’t reach that level…holy smokes!! 😱 Season passes for PRF for 2023 without the discount code will be $180 this year and that gets you in for the 22 days that the Faire is open. How many days is TRF open? That price for the turkey leg was from 2021. They were $14 in 2022, and who knows what they’ll be this year! We know MaritaBeth! We met her when we entered the costume contest the one weekend since she was the judge. She’s a very nice person!
TRF has a 17 day season. I didn’t add taxes and fees for a season pass in my first comment. For us, 1 silver pass and 1 gold pass total was right at $1000 bucks. Camping passes were priced outrageous to try and keep the “riff raft” people who were only there for camping shenanigans out but depending, it was well over $1000 depending on how long you wanted to leave your camp set up. We are 20+ year rennies and still love our festival. It’s large enough to hold a 40k crowd and still be comfortable without long lines although traffic is a nightmare. Like y’all’s it hot at the start and either cold or hot at the end, crazy Texas weather. Please take care of that sweet lady for us, she’s a one of a kind.
A tip I would give, next to shade and sunscreen. Cover your head when it's [really] sunny. Because your scalp is one of the last plaes you want burned, especially where your hair is. Also, it was very common to wear something on your head in that time of history.
One thing I was told was to call my credit card in advance to inform them I would be using it at a festival w/vendors from all over. Apparently many vendors travel and follow the Ren circuit. If a card bank sees multiple charges from various parts of the country they can cancel the card thinking it has been stolen. They said last year this happened to quite a few people. It was also encouraged to use cash over card, but to make sure your form of payment is secure so it doesn't fall out of your costume!
As a re enactor pirate, definitely bring fan, umbrella, water or Gatorade/Powerade if allowed. Where I'm located, we also have a family friendly oriented clothing, and closed toe shoes rules, in some places. Also check if pets are allowed inside (all pets were denied one year). I bring my ferrets.
Currently, at the PA Ren Faire, dogs are the only pet’s allowed and they need to have proof of shots and a ticket (purchased online at the Faire’s box office). If you have a service animal, those are allowed to enter free of charge.
It's been a few years since I've been to the PA Faire. Maybe I'll get there this year. We love going around Halloween as it is awesome to get to be in full garb and not swelter, lol. Great tips! I can attest to most of them. We used to get season passes (or Queens passes as they were called) for the NY Ren Faire back in the early 2000s when we had more disposable income and when we had more energy to go more than once a season. Sadly, we're not energetic enough for that anymore.
I recommend bringing a hiking fanny pack with refillable waterbottles. Also take along a bandana. Very useful. You can also soak it in water and wear it around your neck. Sunscreen. Don't forget sunscreen. A hat is useful too.
I made the mistake my first ren faire of just wearing cheapy flats on day 1. I was in **agony!** So, aesthetics be darned to keep from having leg and back pain
Nope…if only! We don’t remember him ever being at the PA Faire, though we did just see him at the NJ Faire!! You were hearing the ride operators that work the Crows Nest. They will sing songs to get the people on the ride more lively.
You are so good at this... what on the surfice looks simply like a 'plug' for the Fair, turn out to be a very entertaining video. I live in the UK and now I want to go to the Penn Fair (I can't spell Rennesance) AND to meet you! You seem to be there most weekends. ...and I would love to see real(!) Mermaids and real jesters. I would feel like 6 years old again. I wanted to be knight when I was 6, but when I was 18 it turned out there were not many knight jobs out there... sadly, so I became a Jabba de Hutt instead... at least on weekends!!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!! It’s r-e-n-a-i-s-s-a-n-c-e 😉 autocorrect helps us with it 😅 The beauty of Ren faires is that you DO feel like a kid when going! It’s like going to a Disney theme park, but set in the Tudor/Elizabethan era. 😆
Thanks! It most definitely can be, and depending on how you deal with the overwhelming amount of amazing things you can do, it will make or break you. If it breaks you, you may never want to come back and then you are truly missing out!
We sincerely hope that the tips we have shared with you do indeed give you a more enjoyable experience when visiting a Renaissance Faire or Festival!!
Put massage lotion on, I use reflexology
gatekeep isn’t the right word to use for this, but this is so real
For most costuming things, there's also the 15 seconds rule, for being able to use the toilet in what you have.
Excellent idea! I did that to my costume automatically, but never thought to mention it.
Hidden pockets and small bags are great too!
(Provided you're old enough and feel safe)
Be open to making friends. Whether actor, visitor, or staff, dont be afraid to reach out and be friendly. New friends make it a great experience and return trips extra special
SWFF is the besttttttttt!!!!! We moved to NC recently and I miss Sherwood so much *big cry! *
I love rainy days at the faire…cuts down on crowds, dust, makes it moody, and I can wear my cloak with the hood up!
They can be enjoyable if you have the right mindset!
If I had a million dollars, I'd buy a mall that's not busy anymore & set up a year-round indoor ren fair. 😮
That would be so cool.
That would be really cool!
my favorite summer goth/faire garb tip is: bring a plant mister, plastic or aesthetic that you can hang on your belt, and mist your fishnet tights if you feel like you're getting too hot! it will cool you as it evaporates
This is brilliant!
I was at PA ren fair then! I was in a leather jacket. Dying!
Yes I’m going to decorate an umbrella to match my costume
Regarding the third tip, there's a picture on the Internet of a guy who wanted to dress up as the Witch King, but he wanted his feet to be comfortable. So, he cleverly disguised his crocs with PLA foam as boots 😂
That’s brilliant!
HollyAnna’s ren faire crocs fr
I saw someone who had a huge laced gown on full cosplay and was holding her dress up to walk and she had some sneakers lmao
That is a really good addition to our list! Thanks!!
I wish my local faire would have a "Coin of the Realm." That sounds really cool.
Yes , we don't have that, I just bring tons of cash
If you have the time, I would recommend getting involved! My experience with character acting and stage combat in the local Medieval Faire are times that I will cherish forever!
It definitely makes the experience more fun! That is for sure.
You can never have too many fans…they make a great “umbrella” too!
No you can’t! Lol
The MN Renaissance Festival has air conditioning at Safety Services, so if you are having heat issues you can go there.
I didn’t know that 😎 cool. Some places have mist. And queens pub is covered and has great music 🎼 mead and mead.,
I've never been to one of these, but from my recent research this community looks incredible.
I also recommend a parasail, (sun Umbrellas) So worth it made my life that much better
Fans make a great folding parasol and can also fan you once you are in the shade!
Have fun!!
@@FromtheHobbitHole thank you!!! :D
Those are great additions! Thanks for sharing them!!
A tip I follow is to always have small bills in case the vendors don’t necessarily have a lot of change on hand. I usually look like a stripper or server paying with ones and fives.
0:28 Tom when he steps in a mouse trap
Definitely had to go back and rewatch to see what you were talking about… 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I am from Texas and love our Ren Fest at Mission Todd. It is a great time. Loved the part about money. I don’t think we have Coin of the Realm but it would be cool if they did.
That coin of the realm is a very cool thing that PRF does. What is the festival at Mission Todd called?
@@FromtheHobbitHole The one in Todd Mission is just called the Texas Renaissance Festival - largest in the US. Something like 75 acres.
That is BIG!! …then again, it is in Texas 😉
@@FromtheHobbitHole I am also from Texas and I like the Scarborough fair
Yes, I wish ours did too.
You two are truly special creators. These tips and tricks are amazing and they truly helped me further my knowledge about the ren faire. So thank you very much for making this.
Thank you sooooo much!! Your compliment means the world to us! 💚💛 We are so glad that our video was able to help you.
Got to love ThyTube algorithms! Always enjoy when thee pop up on me list! Cheers and looking forward to another fun fulled adventure! Sláinte!
Great tips! Also, consider a good stretch before and/or after your day. 😀
Absolutely!! That’s a must.
9:40 yea speak with the entertainers and tell them how much you loved them. That’s cool.
Went to the same one! Was super fun and wore a mask and tail! Was awesome :)
Great tips young kids! Looking forward to the Celtic weekend so I can put in my kilt without any guilt and run through the shire like crazy young squire!
“Kids” 😂 We are in our 30s! 😅 Glad you enjoyed the video and found our tips helpful!! A reason to wear one’s kilt should not be needed 😉

I had a great time at the Edgewood, NM Renaissance Fair today. I love Celtica the awesome celtic metal band and the other Viking band. They were badass.
Parasol and fan are a must at the faire.
Here here!
I was 12 years old when I went to my first RenFaire in 1976. Been going ever since.
I'm from Western Wa ,and this is perfect because I'm going to TudorCon this year and visiting the PA Rennfaire the first weekend in Sept. I'm so pumped!
No no no, TIP 1: Go to Ren Faire with Hailey and Nathan (Sage is a added bonus) 😂🥰
😂😂🥰🥰
So glad I came across your video! After being associated with the Arizona Renaissance Festival since 1999, I am now living in lower, slower Delaware (originally I am from Maryland and got the Ren faire hook @ Crownsville). Sold my royal costume but saved the peasant stuff for just this occasion. Hope to see you there in the fall - HUZZAH!
Welcome back to this part of the country! Definitely say hello if you see us this upcoming season. We’ve heard amazing things about ARF from some of our friends that are performers, like Randal Piper.
Parasols/umbrellas are very helpful for sunnier/hotter faires like the ones in CA.
I had the pleasure of visiting the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire back in the mid 80's. I would love to go back and see what has changed.
You guys are the perfect hosts for a Ren faire! You really look the part!
Thank you!! That’s quite the compliment! 😊
That one looks awesome! Way better then mine in the sun and heat and first with just mostly tents on the fairgrounds I think.
This Faire is over 40 years old so it’s had the time to build up to this level of substance. A lot of Faires throughout the country are more tent based.
If The Anchor and Mermaid Tavern still has the Bangers and Mash (sausage and mashed potatoes) meal, I HIGHLY recommend getting it! It's DELICIOUS!!!
Sadly, that dish does not seem to be on the menu this year…at least at this time.

Great job guys I go to the Ohio Ren faire and most of your tips work there also.
Thanks! Glad to hear it!!
I recommend if you wear uncomfortable shoes to bring comfortable shoes with you and to always bring a change of socks
Hahah, I love how much more affordable your Ren Fest is than the Texas Renaissance Festival!
I’m going to head to my first Ren Fair in June and I’m going to try to stay in character the whole time it’s gonna be interesting
Good luck and have fun!
The coin of the realm concept is really cool! I wish they had that for the MI ren fest.
OMG, I absolutely ♥LOVE ♥ that your faire has that Coin of the Realm option!! I wish my own faire did that, that is EXCELLENT. What a great option for getting that feeling of immersion!
Definitely! We hope they never get rid of it. Which Faire do you call home?

I don't live in Georgia anymore unfortunately, but I know so many of the local performers here and it's still the "home" faire to me. Ours is set in Henry VIII's time, so it's always a surprise to see which queen we will get from one year to the next.
You make me want to move back to PA. Here in CO, we have a decent Renn Festival, but not as cool as PA!
PA definitely has an incredible Faire! We’ve heard from people who travel to different Faires that the one in CO is quite beautiful. It’s actually on our bucket list to go check it out!
Yep, moved to Cali from PA. Still miss Mount Hope!
I was just at the Colorado renaissance festival today, very fun
I'm going to my first ren faire in a few years in august but it's the one in Pittsburgh I would have loved to go the one in tuxedo NY because that's the one I grew up with, but Pittsburgh is closer to us now. I really feel like Im in my place at ren Faires. I can't wait!
We’ve never been to the Pittsburgh Faire but we’ve heard good things about it. Enjoy it!!
I'm visiting family in VA starting next week, and we'll be attending the Faire on the 16th! I'm so excited to experience the faire for the first time.
That’s awesome!! We hope you have a glorious time!
The cast WAS probably all in on it. Lol. They tend to talk backstage about things like that. Glad to hear you had a memorable and fun time!
I'm planning to bring my family to this faire on sunday (almost 2 1/2 hr trip from the poconos) (first timers) nice video , thank you
Just subscribe, great tidbits! I try to make the Renaissance Fest in my area myself, Maryland rocks! Continued success guys! 😉👍
Well hope to see ya again sometime this season
Thanks for your additional helpful suggestions! You have some good ones!!
Rainy days can be fun too! No lines.
And I also saw a sign that was $11 bucks for a Turkey leg, this year at TRF a Turkey leg was $18 bucks.
Great video! Thank you for sharing. I love ren faires.
You’re welcome! Thanks for enjoying it!!
A tip I would give, next to shade and sunscreen. Cover your head when it's [really] sunny.
Because your scalp is one of the last plaes you want burned, especially where your hair is.
Also, it was very common to wear something on your head in that time of history.
This is my first video ever seeing of you guys and these are amazing tips to remember so than you so so much!
Tip 8? Tips. Most food vendors and street performers do accept tips so be generous with your appreciation and be full of appreciation.
I LOVE the PA Faire! My family goes every year! We know Tom and Joe at Royal Amber 😊
The Royal Amber shop has sooo many beautiful things! Hailey has a couple of their rings.
Im planning to go to the PA ren faire, knowing ahout the coin if the realm is super helpful!
Now I really wanna go there and the coin thing sounds amazing!
The coin of the realm is a really cool thing, and super helpful!
It is! There are so many things on this fair to do and see and buy~ However there is one issue... I am a poor lady from Germany XD@@FromtheHobbitHole
F YEAH KNIGHTWINGS!!!! Love them and the birbs
They put on a great show! We got some fun angles of their show in this vlog of ours:

I recommend bringing a hiking fanny pack with refillable waterbottles. Also take along a bandana. Very useful. You can also soak it in water and wear it around your neck. Sunscreen. Don't forget sunscreen. A hat is useful too.
Wow, I didn’t know u guys where from pa, I’m going this year for my first time, hope to see you guys
Beautiful couple🌛⭐✨✨🏹🏹 thanks for the tips!
You are quite welcome!
I made the mistake my first ren faire of just wearing cheapy flats on day 1. I was in **agony!** So, aesthetics be darned to keep from having leg and back pain
I hear Sponge Bob Square Pants in the background. Me thinks Jacques ze Whipper was nearby ;p
That’s exactly what I was thinking!!!
Nope…if only! We don’t remember him ever being at the PA Faire, though we did just see him at the NJ Faire!! You were hearing the ride operators that work the Crows Nest. They will sing songs to get the people on the ride more lively.

To answer your question, Karen; the PA Ren Faire is at Mount Hope Estate & Winery, a small place just outside of Lancaster
Great tips! I hope to make it out to the PA Faire after I wrap up at NYRF! 😊
Thanks! Do you perform at NYRF or a pass holder?
@@FromtheHobbitHole I started selling my pottery there last year and am now a permanent artisan! 😊
the dark ranger at the beginning was dope
Are you referring to the guy with the hawk?
PA renfaire sounds awesome! I love my local faire but I wish it to be open during Halloween
It is awesome! What time of year does your Faire operate?
Great tips! Thank you!!! ❤️✨🙋🏻♀️🇺🇲
Thanks! You are very welcome!!
Great tips guys! It's a bit overwhelming the first time you go.
Thanks! It most definitely can be, and depending on how you deal with the overwhelming amount of amazing things you can do, it will make or break you. If it breaks you, you may never want to come back and then you are truly missing out!
