  • A bright University medical student narrates how chronic alcoholism has ruined his life and repeatedly delayed his completion of studies. Prolonged drinking binges have caused him to skip many examinations and seen him discontinued by the University of Nairobi more than once. His numerous attempts to cut back on his drinking have been unsuccessful. He hopes to return to the University one day and finish his studies.

This is me.Watching in the year 2022.Same story .Aced my exams (scored 82 points) got admitted to med school.Hardly made it past the second year.Left school battered ,bruised and shattered and sought refuge at home but unfortunately it got worse. Four years later and I made peace with the fact that the journey to becoming a doctor will never materialize.I am now a loader at a local distributor.Anyone reading this, alcoholism is deadlier than cancer. It kills you while you are still alive

WTF , I saw this guy in Chiromo back in the day. I understand its very tough going through a medical course . I also failed Biochem and picked up from there. I spent 1 more year in Vet school and finally finished. Just go back to school and do everything possible to finish.

You can still go back to school and continue. I always wanted to study medicine but because of poverty and the tuition fees of the medical school in my country, Sierra Leone, is very high. The government grant is limited to few people. You must be connected or related to certain people before you get the grant. I had to first study Pure and Applied Sciences at one of the colleges and work for some time. In 2012, I got the chance to go to medical school. By the help of God, I went through year one to five successfully and I am now in final year. So do not give up.

Very inspiring story great strides in this front. We have to realise that alcohol is a drug that can ruin your life very easily if you get addicted not counting the health problems it can cause. By the way ponder on this. If alcohol was discovered today it would be banned as unsafe for human consumption go figure use in moderation.

There need to be programs for students on alcoholism, drug abuse, early pregnancy, hiv AIDS etc....most students go to tertiary institutions when they are very naive and the have no one to teach them.
Some of these courses are also very tough frustrating the students esp high performers...i wish there can be people employed in the academics department to monitor students performance, once they see a degression they engage the student if it persists the parents or guardians.

I have always steered clear of drugs. Even in campus, with the loan money and plus I used to hustle a bit, and I had uncles and friends who used to drink, I never tasted alcohol until the fourth year. And it was in a training event at EABL( then KBL). And to date, I can never taken more than two bottles. Most days I only take one bottle and I enjoy that shit like nonsense. And I can stay for years without even tasting alcohol. I have never had a bad episode with alcohol, even though I started working at 17 years of age. It is all about personal discipline. The best to drink is 40 years, when you have achieved your dreams and there is no chance for addiction. Looking forward to my 40s and already saving for that, although I will probably not start until am 45. See, this is the best advise about alcohol. First, when advertising, how many sips does Michael Power and all those other dudes take....JUST ONE. So do that too. Second, alcohol companies advertising to kids, because they are bad. And they give you na advise to wait till you are 18 to drink. Imagine that. Once you understand those two things, then your days will be smooth.

Addiction is a disease and not a choice …Some factors may protect you from using alcohol in the young age and that’s good. But some people are predisposed genetically
They may start even at the age of 40 and suffer the consequences of addiction which are similar to all people who struggle with the disease of addiction. However with good support one is able to manage the disease and live a drug free life

    • @lawrencemaweu

The problem with some intelligent people is that they don't believe in the spiritual realm. This is where they go wrong. There are two sides to life on planet earth: the side influenced by the Spirit of God and the side influenced by Satan. As humans God has given us the power to choose between the two. Choose Jesus today and your life will be perfect.

    • @brianfury254

Life treats us differently and I've learnt to be slow to judgement. Bustani is my 'alma mater'😂 and I can confirm that most of those enrolled there are quite intelligent. Fyodor Dostoevsky said; Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart. The really great men must, I think, have great sadness on earth. When life chooses to serve you adversity after adversity, one can easily be hard pressed to believe there exists any deity. In that state solace is found in 'numbing' the pain.🙃
