    I got my first Model 29 around 1975 though in those days, I was told, S & W was running off one model at a time... but I ordered the piece around 1972ish. The baby came along and I had to sell it to pay hospital bills. Well, 50 years later this 10 3/8 barrel Model was available on a Gun Auction site so I jumped on it. Not exactly a pocket pistol but I always felt that big guns make big holes. I've been a lifelong fan and buyer of S&W's all my born days.

    I bought mine from a guy in shot gun news in 1987 .He was 73 years old from Pennsylvania. He shot 3 deer with it. I love this firearm. Great condition...375.00 dollar's most people don't even know about them.

      I purchased mine brand new in 1984 for $510.00 Cdn. It's kind of neat to own a Model 29 that many people don't know even exists alright. Very accurate revolver in my case as well.

    The S&W Model 29 with a 10 and 5/8 inch barrel was featured in “Big Trouble In Little China.” It was the revolver carried by Egg Shen, that he offered to Jack Burton.

      It was a model 29 but the 8 3/8” barrel. Same length in Taxi Driver. Still an awesome firearm. I own a 6.5”, 8 3/8” and the silhouette at 10 5/8”. They are my favorite in my collection.

      I've heard from many people who had one and sold it. I'm sure glad I held onto mine. They probably didn't make all that many of them, as they were to serve a pretty specialized need.

      I got my 29-5 Silhouette in January of 1992. I ordered it in December of 91 and the gun shop in California (when it was a real state) said they weren't sure they could get it as production was stopping that month. Anyways, I lucked out and got one. Hands down my favorite gun to shoot. I almost wish mine was a safe queen, but there are many thousands of rounds through it already.

      The Way to Native Chronicles To be clear, and please forgive my ignorance, the adjustable front sight is obviously for different distances but would you need to dial a lower or higher number for longer distance shots?I’m just slightly confused knowing that to raise the point of impact you would have to lower the front sight. Thank you in advance, Brian.

    • @TheWaytoNativeChronicles
      @TheWaytoNativeChronicles  5 років тому

      @@bripro68 You're correct in thinking your front sight has to be lower in order to dial in for longer distances Brian. One way to conceptualize it is by placing a ruler on top of your front and rear sight. The ruler is your sight line. Now move the part of the ruler resting on the front sight to rest lower (right on the barrel) while leaving the other end resting on top of the rear sight. Using the ruler as the sight line now to aim at a target, the barrel of your gun will be pointing higher.

      The Way to Native Chronicles That sir is a great way to visualize it. Thank you for that. I am trying to acquire one of these revolvers on gun broker. Just when I think I’m about to get it the bidding goes sky high in the last half hour.
      To be clear on the adjustable front side though, you say in the video that you set the set screw yourself. So in theory, could setting number two, (or any other number) for example, be the position of the highest front sight setting? etc. etc.
      Thanks again both for a great video and for the time to answer my questions.

    • @TheWaytoNativeChronicles
      @TheWaytoNativeChronicles  5 років тому +1

      @@bripro68 Yes, although the general practice is to set each sight setting in an order from 1-4 representing nearest to farthest distance, you can adjust the set screws individually for each setting to make the front sight any height you want.

      Yeah, great fun DerPafferfish. Kind of cool, the delay from the sound of the shot to the sound of the bullet "clang" on the target when it's 200 m away. Since artificial rests were not allowed, we used to shoot using the Creed-moor position.

    Very nice video! I picked up this exact model several months ago for a price that I just couldn't pass up. I would like to do a thorough internal cleaning of the front sight mechanism but have not been able to find a video demonstrating the disassembly process. Do you happen to know how to do this, and if you do, would you be willing to do a demo video? I'm feeling a little cautious about punching out any pins and possibly having a spring (or other part) go flying across the room.

    It’s March 28, 2020 and I hope this message finds you safe and well.
    I finally acquired my 29-3 silhouette the other day but will gave to wait to shoot it as all public ranges have been closed temporarily.
    The example I picked up is not pristine but I have no problem with that. I enjoy working on the guns as much as I do shooting them. There are no rust spots, just a little bit of shiny spots where the blueing rubbed off near the muzzle.
    As you mentioned in a conversation we had many months ago it seems that the number one front sight position is for closer targets and as numbers increase so does distance as it does lower the front sight.
    Do you have a recommended front sight setting and distance to sight it in at or do you literally have to sight in every dial setting at the distance of your choice. Thank you again, Brian

    • @TheWaytoNativeChronicles
      @TheWaytoNativeChronicles  4 роки тому +2

      Things are well on this side, thanks. As you guessed, I literally set each of the 4 positions on the front sight to different distances although now - since there's no IHMSA competitions in the area - I mostly shoot 50 foot targets indoors, practicing my rapid fire from holster technique.

      The Way to Native Chronicles Thank you for responding. You are clearly a great source of knowledge and I appreciate your input.
      I do have one question in particular to this revolver. I guess I imagined to feel positive “clicks” when adjusting the wheel on the front sight. The type of collects you feel when adjusting for windage. Anyway I don’t feel them when I depress the rear of that front sight blade the wheel kind of spins freely. Is that normal? Thank you in advance and enjoy your day.

    Great video! I picked one of these up a few years back for a song ($225) in pretty amazing shape. I was wondering if you had any problems shooting factory, full power 240 gr loads? I’ve had a few issues with it unlocking and rotating back so the hammer would drop on a fired case.

      @TheWaytoNativeChronicles  5 років тому +1

      Hi Jeb and sorry for taking this long to reply. I think I know what you mean about hot loads in this revolver. I have been shooting Model 29's since 1978. After about a decade or so, I came to the conclusion it's best to not load them really, really hot. The guns will last longer that way. My goto load now is 23.0 grains of IMR 4227 behind a 245 grain cast bullet (Lyman #429421 mould), producing a velocity a little over 1,300 fps. I could use 24.0 grains, but choose to use 23.0 for the reasons given.

    With a longer Barrel you get a higher velocity. How fast can you sling one of them bullets? That revolver came with that Barrel from Smith & Wesson?

    • @TheWaytoNativeChronicles
      @TheWaytoNativeChronicles  4 роки тому

      Yup, that's the barrel the gun came with from S&W. It was a special model they made for a while for long distance, handgun silhouette shooting. Using a mild load of 23.0 grains of IMR 4227 with a 247 grain cast bullet, my chronograph tells me I'm getting 1,315 fps at the muzzle. I think the extra barrel length increases the velocity substantially. The longer sight radius helps with accuracy as well.
