I say it all the time, but I could literally watch you talk about airguns all day Andy. Another job well done. I currently own the 8inch version and I'm very happy with it, but now I'm looking for the 6 inch version. See you next week! Thanks Andy.
I had the 6 inch version but it looked unbalanced with the large grips l got rid of it. , l would have had the 8 inch version and kept it but l couldn't source one anywhere.
Well, just put 50 pellets through my rifled barrel version. It feels good in the hand, very good grip to get a very good hold of. Out of the box it shot a fair bit low and left, although this was only from 6 yards. The front sight with orange blade does not show up well against the silver of my knockdown targets, but a bit of black paint can sort that. The rear sight will need a tweak. Power wise, my chrono' is duff, so, just by "ear", mine seems to have a little more poke than the one reviewed by Andy. I used Air Arms Field 4.52's (8.44 grain). After shooting I compared the trigger and action with my Umarex 586 Smith & Wesson. I have to say that the trigger of the 586, and the action as a hole, is far smoother and has a far better quality feel. The only downside against the 586 is the fact that it doesn't have an authentic chamber. Hope to compare both against each other once I get a new chronograph. At this moment in time though, if I had to buy just one it would be the 586. My trial of the Model 29 took place inside at an average room temperature.

Great vid Andy. Could you imagine the fourteen year old you being presented with one of those beauties? Compared with the Webley, Diana and BSA pistols of the day, it would have been beyond belief!!! I owned the long barrelled version of this formidable handgun when I was a member of my police shooting club here in London UK some decades ago. Even my Colt 12" barrelled "Buntline" pistol was a runner-up in the effect from the act of firing. The cost of the ammunition was one factor that saw use restricted of the S&W weapon. My lingering memory is how strongly built it was and how that was a very visual indication that it was not to be handlled with less than due diligence and respect.
The received wisdom is the BB version is superior if you use pellets. The 'rifled' version only has a 70mm rifled section, then it's smoothbore. Pellet version is less accurate, and lower power, so you can feel happy you have the better gun.
I'd love to see a bore scope run through some of these barrels, been having a difficult time getting a decent one for another Umarex product, and made by Walther too.
Superb revolver and I am very tempted. The only thing for me is that I am sure that the left side of the pistol grip should have a thumb rest cut into it.... I may be wrong but recall shooting one years ago with the thumb rest.
You are correct. The .44 Magnum used by Dirty Harry did have a carved out section for the thumb. As Andy said, the Smith and Wesson m29 went through 10 alterations. The airgun replica must be of a late version. Though it would have been nice if it had the exact style of grip as the movie version
Thanks Andy for a great and fun review. I have the 8 inch version which is a lot of fun to shoot. Even my Grandson tried it out with a big chuckle. My wife thinks she can use it for home defense as it is heavy enough to beat someone to death with !
I am now wanting to add this lovely piece to my growing collection. I just purchased the Umerex Walther PPQ M2 pellet pistol and really like it. I was very impressed with the accuracy compared to my Crosman M4-177 and the Crosman R1 full auto. That M29 is hot and I want it badly!!!
I have never owned a co2 revolver not that i dont like them just always gone for an semi auto when been buying. I am sorely tempted by one of these for sure
Hi Andy, you must have bobbed into Vector Air just after I did when I purchased my BB version M29. The looks, feel and finish are second to none, and with a few minor adjustments to the rear sight, I've had consistent groupings pretty much bang on at 8 metres. Great review as always mate.
I swore I wouldn't buy another CO2 pistol. But being a life long "Dirty Harry" fan (of the original. The second two were okay but the last two sucked!) and living in the UK means this is the closest I'll ever get to owning the real thing, and I always so wanted one. The closest I have got so far is firing a .44 Magnum Ruger Super Redhawk in the USA about ten years ago. So its best begging eyes on to the Mrs. It's just a shame it wasn't modelled on Harry's Model 29-2 "pinned and recessed" example, rather than the latest version with the terrible grip shape rather than the classic Goncalo Alves grips and other less aesthetically pleasing features such as the ejector rod shroud shape, the top rib shape and the rear foresight mount. Like I said, I always wanted a Model 29. I don't understand why they haven't offered the classic 4 inch version (which also looks cool. Watch Mel Gibson in "Payback" or Lee Marvin in "Point Blank") rather than the ugly 3 inch? Interesting side note: Harry was supposed to have had a nickel plated 4 inch version in the original "Dirty Harry" script, but when they found it impossible to source any they went with the 6.5 inch with 2 being built for them by S&W. Personally I think it was the right choice as nickel plated is too "bling" for Harry. Like I said "....a life long Dirty Harry fan".
Spot on regarding the grips... whoever designed those new grips for the real steel probably never fired a 44 Mag in their life, they are way too thin and the taper ergonomics are awful for handling magnum recoil!
I had the real steel in 3inch stainless known as a Lew Horton special and what a beast it was. I find the grips on the replica not quite right as in too narrow but, it is still a superb replica.
At last a Pistol I can't blame Andy for making me buy it. Purchased mine a few weeks ago. BB version as I couldn't find a pellet version I the 8". But im sought of glad now.
Great review once again ! I have a pellet version on back order at my local gun shop but after seeing this I’m wondering if I should get the bb version instead as they have loads available. It’s the age old question , is it safe in the long term to use pellets in a bb pistol 🤷♂️
In the past, many airguns only came with smoothbore barrels (eg. the Diana 25), but they were used with pellets, and lasted for decades. Indeed, some still survive to this day. Why would a lead pellet damage a smoothbore barrel, but not damage the spiral grooves in a rifled barrel?
Awesome video!! This M29 looks so damn good that oughta get one. But I think I still leave it. Not a big revolver fan myself - and I already own a cartridge loading revolver - which I love to shoot, but hate to throw away time on reloading cartridges.. 6.5 or 8". Does not matter that much really. Oughta tighten up the tolerances of the spring loaded inner barrel (and possibly cylinder) first. My Remington 1875 was not that accurate either as new outta the box - but shoots great now. Pellets in a smooth bore works just great for short pistol ranges. I mostly shoot pellets with my Remington's both 6pc cartridge sets even though loading BBs could be faster to do.
Save yourself some cash, buy the BB variant and use Pellets…..been doing so for months now with my 629 and more recently the M29 - great review Andy. Further note on the 8” Pellet model the one my friend has does not have a full length rifled barrel, more likely 6” then smooth bore and a recess making up the rest…….still awesome Pistols though 👍
@Marko to be honest there is very little difference, these are not pinpoint accurate Pistols and neither is the real steel…..we seem obsessed in the air gun world with putting all our shots into a dime sized group. Personal choice
Thanks again Andy for another great review. I just recently came across your page about a month ago and I got to say that I am very impressed. You make it fun and exciting, by far the best review channel I have come across. Can't wait till the next one. Thanks again
From what I hear, the BB version, shooting pellets is the more accurate. The rifled section of the pellet version is just 70mm long, and I've heard tales of the the joint between the rifled section and the smoothbore clipping as it's not perfectly aligned. So, I'll be opting for the BB version and shooting pellets.
I’ve had the pellet 6.5” version for a couple of weeks unfortunately it’s in the process of being returned as it’s got a problem with the trigger not returning fully resulting in the chamber not rotating for the next shot ….I’ll put that down to bad luck …replacement due in a couple of days.I’m surprised at the negative comments about accuracy as I found mine to be brilliant! The plastic faux wood grips initially make a plastically “creaking noise”don’t be alarmed treat the mating faces with a drop of silicon oil/spray and after use the noise disappears. Great gun can’t wait for my replacement……..it is a bit pellet fussy so persevere with the accuracy. It certainly makes my day!
I've got the pellet version, it's quite accurate up to about 50 feet. You do have to have a pick of pellets to buy what works best. I'm only interested in pellet pistols with rifled barrels, as I like to hit what I'm aiming at!!
@@anthonyprice5596 Totally agree with your comments…..I’m on my second one now as the first one had a slight fault and was returned…. I’m shooting similar distance to you and achieving good groups ….at the end of the day it’s only a garden plinker with open sights!
@@Desperado3248 It's a really odd decision. Assembling two separate parts can't be much cheaper than using one fully rifled section of barrel, and I'd be happy to pay any extra, but they've kinda spoiled it. Also, the plastic grips, a bit of wood wouldn't have broken the bank.
I bought the 6.5 inch pellet version and was very disappointed with the silly little rifled 3 inch barrel and alloy spacer. Took a 7 inch barrel out of an old Stoeger pneumatic and had it machined to match the original barrel and spacer. 2.5ft/lbs muzzle energy with H&N Excite Econs and much improved accuracy. Also got a set of the 629 rubber grips which are a better match to the dull chrome finish than the faux wood grips.
I bought a rifled one a few weeks ago. Yet to try it. Does feel good, but the power and fps figures for the pellet version seem on the low side, being around 1ftlb lower than their 586 Smith and Wesson. Maybe the "realistic" chamber of the 29 is the difference. I'll see how I get on with it, but if I'd have realised the low power I probably wouldn't have bought it. I also think the barrel may not be 6". Yet to get the tape measure out, but there's a faIr bit of a recess in the shroud of the barrel, which, of course, gives it a great look, but may mean that it's the shroud that's 6", not the barrel. Lastly, it's a shame the finish isn't properly blued. The finish is more of a dark chrome brown. It's a quality finish and feels that it's made well, but going on your testing the low power is a concern. Lovely it is, but looks are nothing if the end result is left a little to be desired. Time to put mine though it's paces. Cheers for the review.
I measured the barrel on my replica, and it is 6.5 inches. I measured it from where the forcing cone starts in front of the cylinder to the tip. I agree it should have been a black blued finish instead of the dark chrome brown finish
"but may mean that it's the shroud that's 6", not the barrel." That's correct. The internal rifled barrel is less than 3" long. Same length on all the pellet versions, even the 8-3/3" one. ☹ I'll be getting the BB version, and shooting pellets through it.
@@James-0075 cheers. Saved me a job. So fair to say that the barrel is around 6" then. Although it's quite low powered, pellet version for me every time.
I have an ASG branded 6 inch "Dan Wesson 715" revolver and the rifled barrel on that is significantly shorter than the shroud too. I hope this isn't a trend amongst manufacturers now. 😕
Hi Andy, back in the day when were allowed cartridge pistols l was shooting next to a guy using a.44 magnum ( me a little.38 SW) when he fired the ground shook! I was so nervous l had to let him shoot first as I couldn’t concentrate!
Great review, curious though as to how the BB’s would damage the rifling, this from a guy that only owns PCP’s that can’t take BB’s. But not like I would try them in my kit.
I love your reviews. So entertaining, and informative! I have this M29, and the faux wood grips can be easily enhanced with some stain followed by some clear gloss and they look like genuine high end S&W grips afterward. Cheers!
Lovely things. But a tuned up HDR50 with chrome steel balls and a little sanding in the chambers will end up with a spell of porridge. But very good fun.
Why didn’t you explain to your viewers that all three rifled models share that same 70mm truncated barrel leaving the 6.5” and the 8” with the remainder made up of 6mm smoothbore? Penny pinching by umarex or what!
In the excitement you really weren’t sure if you’d fired 5 or six 😜 Nice guns, I have a few revolvers, a Dan Wesson 4” in 6mm which I’ve had for about 12 years. A Crosman Sheridan Cowboy and the best one a Umarex Smith and Wesson 586 6” which has a small cylinder that holds 10 pellets rather than a full revolver with shells but is a different league in build quality with interchangeable barrels of 4”, 6” or 8” lengths. Like you though these days I struggle with open sights due to wearing varifocal glasses.
Awaiting mine in the 6.5 inch rifled barrel version. Unlike some l prefer to shoot CO2 pistols at quite short distances of no more than 25 feet or less (l never shoot my .177 air rifles beyond 30 yards) because a) my eyesight is 70 years old, and b) l like the tightest groups possible. These are air weapons and their limitations should be respected, especially if you’re hunting with a .177 or .22 rifle. I don’t kill anything but time, but if l did I’d shoot myself if l couldn’t guarantee a humane kill.
Beautiful replica but it appears power levels are getting lower and lower on newer replicas. 6ftIb max for us in the uk but I can't help thinking we are being ripped off in the power stakes. My older Smith and Wesson 586 6" shoots at over 450 fps with a 7g pellet on average, so what's going on with the decline in power?
You're doing it yet again lol teasing me with that AGT Vulcan 2 tactical in the background. I'm still waiting patiently for the review 🤣 I've lost track how many videos it's been sat in the background now 😊
Good morning Andy , now this is a nice treat for us all . A stunning looking revolver. Truly a work of Art 🖼. Will look fabulous in a good gun belt n holster. Iam going on holidays soon to 🇪🇬 Egypt . ⛵️ sailing down the river Nile . I will look you up next week from Egypt 🇪🇬. Great great show Andy , you get better n better each week . Thank you… cheers Simon 🥇😎🏴🇪🇬👍
Not sure whether you are aware Andy but the pellet version is only rifled for the first 2.5 inches and rest is smooth bore ,this is the same on the 8 inch version as well .Which put me off buying it .
Almost identical to the Crosman SR .357. Other than using different BB/pellet cartridges they appear to be built in the same factory using many of the same parts.
Andy, you “cowboyed” your gun around 12 minutes! Lol 😂 I thought, “man, this gun is about COOL, a perfect gun and way to do it! Very cool and terrific review as always. Thanks
Hey Andy can you do an update video on some of the Umarex guns of the west? Maybe they have some new replicas out that we haven't heard about yet, or maybe some they have discontinued!
Great watching yet one more of your thorough reviews with your usual wit and pertinence which I most enjoy. Being from the 'other side of the Pond' and a member of the Commonwealth :-) this new Umarex revolver is only available in the 8 inch barrel version. Sadly not the 'Inspector Calhoun's' 6 inch version you are displaying. Will have to wait for sometime in the future in the hopes that it will become available in my country because with an 8 inch barrel (a beast) it is totally over-kill (pun intended) as a movie replica revolver in my book and my collection. By the way very nice pine board wall planking in your backdrop decor. Cheers!
Great review - thanks Andy - But who buys BB guns ? and where do they shoot them safely ? especially if there is a pellet version available. The pellet one is definitely on my wish list.
really wanted one of those, shame about the rifled version barrel mostly being an aluminium spacer, never thought Umerex would follow down that path after producing such co2 classics like the Walter CP88 and Berretta 92FS. Had an ask but can not source a full length barrel for them.
The M29 replica really does look, and feel, pretty much like the real thing, which I guess what Umarex are tapping into. BUT, as much as I enjoy watching Andy's reviews, he's omitted some valid points. I have both the 3"and 8 3/8" versions so I know what I'm talking about. Okay, they both look brilliant but anyone that's handled a real revolver knows there should be no lateral movement of the cylinder in the closed position. Because Umarex omitted to put a spring loaded pin in the frame to keep the end of the ejector rod in place, there's a large "wobble factor" resulting in an annoying rattle when you handle the gun. The most annoying thing about both the 6 1/2" & 8 3/8" versions is that only about 2 1/2" of the barrel is rifled(!!) with the remainder being a widening smooth bore up to about .23" instead of .177". No wonder Andy's shooting wasn't more accurate. Now, I've contacted Umarex & they confirm the lack of rifling in the pellet versions & they say it's down to cost & would add €100 to production cost to do the job right. Yeah........ So, my local Gun Guru has already adapted my 3" with both a spring loaded pin to hold the cylinder in place and fit a fully rifled barrel. Result; it shoots like a dream up to about 12 yards. I intend to ask him to convert the long barrel version similarly. Cost per gun approx €35. If done on a mass production level, it'd cost Umarex next to nothing. Conclusion; still worth buying provided you do the appropriate mods but shame on Umarex for not doing a proper job to begin with.
I say it all the time, but I could literally watch you talk about airguns all day Andy.
Another job well done.
I currently own the 8inch version and I'm very happy with it, but now I'm looking for the 6 inch version.

I had the 6 inch version but it looked unbalanced with the large grips l got rid of it. , l would have had the 8 inch version and kept it but l couldn't source one anywhere.
The lower performance of the rifled version, might have something to do with the fact the inner rifled barrel is less than 3" long.
A mere 2.75" to be exact.
Thank you sooo much for not saying it's "iconic" or an "icon".

That cutout was to provide clearance for the shells to come out, since the vintage 'Dirty Harry' era grips were a bit larger.

Dont be cheap
@Marko to be honest there is very little difference, these are not pinpoint accurate Pistols and neither is the real steel…..we seem obsessed in the air gun world with putting all our shots into a dime sized group. Personal choice
@That '90s guy the rifled barrel does give it better accuracy, same with any bb/ pellet version of any gun
@My name is Marko
I think that's a fault in the older bb guns the pellet ones I've had and others are well made.
All the rifled barrelled pistols the riflings only a few inches long
Thanks again Andy for another great review. I just recently came across your page about a month ago and I got to say that I am very impressed. You make it fun and exciting, by far the best review channel I have come across. Can't wait till the next one. Thanks again
Great video! As soon as it was done went online and ordered the 8" bb version and it was on sale, Got it for $129 here in the USA .
"Professor Andy", "Dirty Harry", "S&W M29".........a shooting Trifecta!
Only rifling part of the barrel in an otherwise quality revolver is short sighted, and cheap. Truly a half assed approach
Even the Dan Wesson 6 inch only has 2.5 inches of rifling ,and the legend series .
Good morning everyone , go on make my day . 😎💨👀
"but may mean that it's the shroud that's 6", not the barrel."
That's correct. The internal rifled barrel is less than 3" long.
Same length on all the pellet versions, even the 8-3/3" one. ☹
I'll be getting the BB version, and shooting pellets through it.
@@James-0075 cheers. Saved me a job. So fair to say that the barrel is around 6" then. Although it's quite low powered, pellet version for me every time.
@@BedsitBob interesting. Time to inspect mine.
Cheers!
@Willem Chastity Leather stain.
Andy, I always enjoy your comprehensive reviews . . thank you.
I got one of these this week after Andys review. Love it you do can't help but be all Clint Eastwood when you pick it up 😂
Guess a man ought to know his limitations.
You made my day punk.
Brilliant review as always ..and what a beautiful gun...thanks Andy..kind regards Dave 😁👍👍👍👍
Have you got any plans to test the pellet blowback rifled Glock??
Now they need to produce the other iconic movie pistol, the 475 Wildey Magnum, from Death Wish.
Great review sir! Dear Umarex, IMHO it's not a replica if it's "faux" wood.
In the excitement you really weren’t sure if you’d fired 5 or six 😜
Nice guns, I have a few revolvers, a Dan Wesson 4” in 6mm which I’ve had for about 12 years. A Crosman Sheridan Cowboy and the best one a Umarex Smith and Wesson 586 6” which has a small cylinder that holds 10 pellets rather than a full revolver with shells but is a different
league in build quality with interchangeable barrels of 4”, 6” or 8” lengths. Like you though these days I struggle with open sights due to wearing varifocal glasses.
First one I purchased was over £200 picked the 8 and 3 inch up for £79 each, why has the price dropped so much?
Awesome! Umarex hits another home run!
Always a great show Andy 👍
Awaiting mine in the 6.5 inch rifled barrel version. Unlike some l prefer to shoot CO2 pistols at quite short distances of no more than 25 feet or less (l never shoot my .177 air rifles beyond 30 yards) because a) my eyesight is 70 years old, and b) l like the tightest groups possible. These are air weapons and their limitations should be respected, especially if you’re hunting with a .177 or .22 rifle. I don’t kill anything but time, but if l did I’d shoot myself if l couldn’t guarantee a humane kill.
Clint Eastwood actually used both the 6-1/2" and 8-3/8" inch versions.
Indeed, at different points in the same film, depending on the visual effect they wanted!
Are the shells of a BB's version the same as the pellet's version?
Oh yes!! What a beauty!
You're doing it yet again lol teasing me with that AGT Vulcan 2 tactical in the background. I'm still waiting patiently for the review 🤣 I've lost track how many videos it's been sat in the background now 😊
I always use Prometheus lead free in my pellet pistols much higher fps
Next month I think I'm getting another pellet gun .. just can't decide if I want the Double Barrel Glock .. Dirty Harry ... Or The GAMO rifle
great gun i am just waiting for it to arrive great stuff in 8''
Good morning Andy , now this is a nice treat for us all .
Have a great holiday 👍
@@AAROnair Thank you so much 😀
whats the fps and is it better than the Crosman sr375?
Not sure whether you are aware Andy but the pellet version is only rifled for the first 2.5 inches and rest is smooth bore ,this is the same on the 8 inch version as well .Which put me off buying it .
I have been completely unable to find the 6.5 inch airsoft version available here in the USA
Yesssss!
Have real one... Wrist Twister.👍
Almost identical to the Crosman SR .357. Other than using different BB/pellet cartridges they appear to be built in the same factory using many of the same parts.
the bb version is great value....another great video sir
I have to ask Andy, does the faux wood grip feel similar to actual wooden handgrips?
Got to be the 8" because of the film. Id still prefer that 5th gen .43 Glock you did the other week
Hi Andy. Big fan of your show. I was wondering if you could show us your personal collection ? :-)
Never fired a Model 29, but I have fired a Ruger Blackhawk, which was in the same calibre. 😎
Strangely the 6.5" version isn't available in the USA. I've only found the 8" version for sale.
Looks a lovely gun but not long had my Dan Wesson 715 6" pellet gun and love it so will stick with that for now! Great review as usual though, thanks.
Dirty Andy? 44 magnum the choice of Travis bickle ! Hero taxi driver . Allegedly maybe.
Travis used the 83/8" version, you know the one: "They use that in Africa for killing elephants!"
Andy, you “cowboyed” your gun around 12 minutes! Lol 😂 I thought, “man, this gun is about COOL, a perfect gun and way to do it! Very cool and terrific review as always. Thanks
this is my fav gun dose enyone know the best place to get it in 2 tone ????????
hello sir can you please do a full review of benjamin trail mark 2 break barrel pistol
Hey Andy can you do an update video on some of the Umarex guns of the west? Maybe they have some new replicas out that we haven't heard about yet, or maybe some they have discontinued!
ordered one of these yesterday. Looking forward to it. Great video.
Cheers!
Awesomeness!!! .44 magnum
Preciosa presentacion y muy buenas conclusiones Salud.
Great review - thanks Andy - But who buys BB guns ? and where do they shoot them safely ? especially if there is a pellet version available. The pellet one is definitely on my wish list.
Would love to see you get ahold the Uramex Desert Eagle.
Vilken revolver eller pistol har den bästa precisionen av alla vapen du har testat? Jag förstår engelska men kan inte skriva den.
really wanted one of those, shame about the rifled version barrel mostly being an aluminium spacer, never thought Umerex would follow down that path after producing such co2 classics like the Walter CP88 and Berretta 92FS. Had an ask but can not source a full length barrel for them.
The wind was too strong to get a good grouping.
Longer is always better. ;)
Great show and channel!!!
One of my Uncles bought a S&W 29 just before the Dirty Harry movies came out, after the movies were out he sold it for four times what he paid for it.
Hey Andy, loving the videos mate. Just wondering, can you do a review on the HDR 68 please? And also interested in seeing the Crossman Vigilante CR357
