One of the truely great films of the 50's.
To see it just for Edward Dmytryk's direction, is an education in itself. Cheers.
I always thought this was one of Brando's finest performances. Especially when you compare it to Streetcar. The character Diestl is so different in every aspect: charming, cordial, sensitive, humane. And he pulls it off perfectly with a well understood, carefully planned performance that unlike most method actors, captures the externals first.
Bravura performance by Montgomery Clift. One of his best and too often overlooked.
perfect movie... One of the best Brando role. Maximilian Schell was also excellent. The story is unusual. The end is unexpected and unpredictable.
Marlon Brando is the best actor ever. Besides Ralph Fiennes. Just love this movie...
Of course GI Ackerman and Christian have much in common, decent fellows fighting each other in a war of destruction. It shows the futility of war and the way it destroys lives. The worst cases are the Hauptmann, Christian's boss, who kills himself and his wife who has to (well) survive.
It was a good film for a few reasons: the acting of Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Dean Martin, Hope Lange and Barbara Rush, Hugo Friedhofer's evocative score and Joe McDonald's splendid black and white CinemaScope photography. However, Edward Anhalt's script has one rather naive note right in the beginning of the picture. Brando and Rush are celebrating New Year's Eve in a Bavarian ski resort when the crowd erupts into all sorts of "Heil Hitlers." Rush is surprised by this, saying she had seen it in Berlin, but that she didn't expect to see it in this "small" out-of-the-way village in Bavaria. The whole Nazi movement began in conservative Catholic Bavaria while Berlin was the cultural sin city of Europe Hitler vowed to clean up. This faux pas was too bad because the rest of the film was top notch.
Don't forget who made this film and where.
NSDAP got nevertheless more votes in the protestant north than in Catholic Bavaria.

I wrote an essay on this movie... as an entrance exam to a Poliish Liceum... I was accepted...
I forgot Monty and Marlon were in a film together!!!! And Monty after his accident, so sad what happened to his face :(
No filme norte-americano Os Deuses Vencidos, temos os acontecimentos que suceder-se-ão ao jovem alemão Christian (Marlon Brando), quando este conhece a jovem americana Margaret (Barbara Rush), na cidade de Baviera, localizada na Alemanha no ano de 1937. Esse interessante filme norte-americano dirigido pelo cineasta Edwark Dmytryk utiliza-se dos gêneros do drama, guerra e romance para abordar o tema de como a Segunda Guerra Mundial era vislumbrada tanto do ponto de vista alemão, quanto do norte - americano, e as consequências de tal conflito armado na vida dos indivíduos da época. Diferente de outros filmes sobre a Segunda Guerra Mundial, principalmente no que concerne em mostrar o "lado alemão" do conflito, este Os Deuses Vencidos concorreu em 3 categorias do Oscar 1959, que foi na categoria de Melhor Fotografia, Melhor Sim e Melhor Trilha Sonora e ante tais qualidades, recomendo tal filme para apreciação! No mais,um filme excelente, recomendo Os Deuses Vencidos!
Pellicola davvero stupenda, sceneggiatura ben fatta che fa riflettere sugli orrori della guerra, in questo caso la seconda guerra mondiale. Ha anche il merito di avere fatto vedere che c' erano buoni anche tra i militari tedeschi. Ci sono troppe sequenze romantiche, era meglio se fossero un pò di meno e in certi casi risente di alcune sequenze poco significative.
