      This ""lowly Silvan Elf" line just drove me crazy, since it’s completely out of character for what Tolkien wrote about Thranduil, Legolas, and the Sindarin elves in Mirkwood :( There is nothing to suggest that the Sindarin elves would have been against their children marrying Silvan elves. And, in fact, Legolas (having been raised in Mirkwood) is basically considered a Silvan elf himself. He even refers to himself as a Silvan elf in Lord of the Rings. And when Tolkien talks about Legolas’s cultural heritage, he calls him a Woodland Elf (so, Silvan), “though one of royal and originally Sindarin line.”

    Thranduil does not look down on Tauriel. After all, he rescued her when she was a young orphan. However, he's a very smart elf, and he knows that what Legolas feels for Tauriel isn't the way Tauriel feels about Legolas. Legolas is in love with Tauriel, but Tauriel loves Legolas as a friend, a brother-at-arms, even a sibling. Thranduil doesn't want her to encourage Legolas in the interest of not hurting him, because in the end, she will only hurt him more. Thranduil is well aware that protecting his son this way could result in humiliation on both sides, so when Tauriel guesses that the issue is her being a sylvan elf, the king is more than willing to let her believe that.

      Eh. That's a good theory but I don't necessarily think so. I think tauriel did fall for legolas after all those years training under him. You can tell she looks happy when he says legolas is fond of her then she looks depressed when he says no you can't be with him. I think he said that because 1. He lost his wife and doesn't want legolas to go through it. 2. He just doesn't think tauriel is good enough for him. I believe she did indeed have a crush on legolas. And I mean this out of respect lol. You're theory was good tho. Lol

      I liked adding some of the traits of arrogance and pride in Thranduil’s character, this actually helped his characterisation and motives, but I dont like this movie nonsense of him scorning the ,,lowly silvan elves” is complete hogwash, he actually adopted culture of Wood Elves despite being a Sindar from his descent :( He believed that a return to the old ways of the Elves, basically the Silvan way of life, was superior to the corrupt ways of the Noldor. With that in mind, the Sindar that followed him, embraced the Silvan people and their ways. The vast majority of Thranduil’s people were either Silvan or mixed Silvan/Sindar.

    Pretty sure Thranduil knew Bilbo was there. Looking directly at him. Thranduil even knew he stole the keys from his guards. That elf chick was descending the staircase reporting to him, she was not lingering. She was on her way.

    • @Chocobear555
      @Chocobear555 4 роки тому +153

      Exactly. In fact, it's very obvious that he knows Bilbo is there. First, there's the moment when he looks directly at him and asks, "Why do you linger in the shadows?" And then, there's the moment where he looks in Bilbo's direction shortly after he says, "But here in this kingdom, we will endure." I think the only reason he does nothing is because he probably feels that Bilbo isn't a threat to him or his people. Or maybe he is thinking that he is imagining things. Either way, he doesn't seem too concerned.

      No Thranduil doesn't know or see Bilbo there, he doesn't own any ring of power so there's no way he can see Bilbo while he's wearing the One ring, he just feel there is a presence there, just like Smaug can sense Bilbo, but cannot know or see who that is, and Bilbo presence is not anything he he should be concerned so he probably think it's just his imagination.

    You know how I would have liked Tauriel's character MUCH more? Drop the pointless 'love-at-first-sight' thing with Kili (since it takes way too much impact from Legolas/Gimli storyline in the Lotr movies) and have her and Legolas have a thing. Maybe not a full blown romance but something that could develop in the movies. Then, Tauriel would die in the Battle of the Five Armies and we could have that touching 'It was real'- exchange with Legolas and Thranduil. Not only would it bring in some looked for father-son-bonding but actually create Legolas into a character that has an actual backstory and personality. The loss of Tauriel could also explain how Legolas is so close with Aragorn in the Lotr movies; he has already lost someone close to him, he will not make the same mistake again.

      If you ask me, Jackson really undersold Tolkien elves in this second trilogy for evoking cheep romance feelings and winning feminist claps.
      Tolkien's Elder Race is not exactly the kind that would fall in love with a passing dwarf even if he were one of the royal house of Durin. Tauriel's feelings for the Dwarf Kili are very uncharacteristic for the elven race who are known for their great timeless wisdom and depth of characters. They are not the sort to have crushes on random dwarves if you will excuse my bluntness.
      That is why Aragorn and Arwen's relationship was so significant to the first trilogy. It establishes Aragorn as much above the normal standard of men. Now by means of this single Elf character Tauriel, Jackson has managed to insult the entire race of the Elves, Tolkien's noble first-born Children of Iluvatar. Even if the character had to be included, she should have been a love interest for Legolas not the playboy dwarf Kili.

      That and he is by nature an isolationist, as were Galadriel and Celeborn of Lothlorien. Add to that his fear of the loss of his people in a war that he experienced when he accompanied his father, Orofor to join the last alliance war in the second age, and lost better than 2/3rds of his people in that war. He only marched to Laketown (with a battalion, according to the book) not his full strength, because he was desparete to get his wife's jewels back. And his horror at what he had done, shown clearly in the scene where he recalls the army, and I suspect why he was so furious with Tauriel when she tried to stop him from leaving. All of this had to have hit him hard, and remind him of what he had lost.

    He said "do not give him hope when there is none"
    I doubt Thranduil forbids Tauriel and Legolas only because she's a lowborn elf. He knows Tauriel doesn't reciprocate Legolas' feelings that's why he warns her early on not to give him hope WHEN there is none. If she did have, Thranduil would proly give them his blessings. Tauriel loving Legolas in return is possible, but Thranduil warns her off not to encourage him because she's a lowly elf.

    In any case Gimli was Legolas' one love - not a homosexual love, just an extremely tight friendship bond. They became like brothers who traveled together for many years in the 4th Age of Middle Earth. The EofArda isn't sure whether or not Gimli traveled into the West with Legolas in later years, though they think it was a real possibility, but they seem to be sure that Legolas would have, being immortal.
    So whatever plans Thranduil had for his son, it seems the One got in the way of that, and Legolas ended up with Gimli.
    I don't know if Elves marry and have children in the Undying Lands so who knows whether Legolas ever did.

    I'm sure Legolas said more than "Tauriel fought well today." If a son says that to his father, his father will say something like, "Oh, that's good." I think Legolas said something more like "Tauriel was great in combat today" and Thranduil said "Yes, I've seen her fight, she's good" but Legolas continued "No, no, no father, you just didn't see her! It was... great, wonderful, splendid, supernatural, beautiful, heroic" "Yes, Legolas, I have seen her fight. What is your report about-" "No, but you don't understand it, father! She was insurmountable, she looked like a Vala radiating light, moving with the speed of a leopard and the grace of a gazelle" "Legolas your report about-" "Yes I know father she is magnificent" "I didn't say anything about Tauriel, I want to know about-" "Yes, I know we should promote her to Colonel" "Legolas, could you please pay atten-" "Yes, I know, Tauriel is also... very beautiful, feminine, like a delicate spring rose (looking dreamily towards the exit, he says) I'm glad we think alike father, see you in dinner" Legolas leaves and Thranduil watches his son leave with a totally confused and displeased expression. Did Legolas realize he was there? And that's when the father in Thrnduil gets worried and says "I have to do something about this." So let's give him credit, he does it for the sake of his son.

    I don't give two shits about the people saying Thranduil is a dick. I freaking love him. I think Lee Pace's representation of him is perfect; it just seems like the best delivery of the character and the way Thranduil is portrayed is amazing. I would expect an Elven king to act like he does, and there wouldn't be any "umff" in the movie with another male elf that's all feminine and chill.
    As for Tauriel, I do agree with the comments that say she's unnecessary. She's basically only there for the extra mushy-gushy love triangle and as much as she is a "strong female character", it's overdone. She looks like she's trying way too hard in this scene, tbh. She's there for all the feminists who constantly overreact when there isn't a strong female in the midst of male characters.
    Okay no more ranting from me bye :P

      +FanofThings I definitely agree to both of your points here.
      1. Lee Pace is brilliant in these movies. I do not think anyone else would have done better justice to this role. Also, he's incredibly hot (I would do him any day :P)
      2. I do not get why feminists would fret over not having a strong female character in this series. Where does Galadriel lie then? She is such a badass that she expels Sauron with her Water ring. I am a feminist and I think Tauriel is unnecessary and cringe worthy in the movies. She has no screen presence and has extremely cheesy character. Like seriously, falling in love with a dwarf? (Nothing against Kili, he's cute.) I am more than happy to see Galadriel in action against Sauron (The Necromancer of Dol-Guldur in the movies) than watch Tauriel being an insubordinate, disobedient Captain of the Guard. I think its insulting to portray her as an insubordinate when she has such a huge responsibility with her position. Obviously the whole thing is flawed as she fails to understand the gravity of the situation if Sauron returns (which he does later on) and just lives in her own La Vie en Rose and the only thing that matters to her is Kili.
      So frustrating how they butchered it with her character. My favourites are Galadriel, and Eowyn. Especially Eowyn, with the WitchKing of Angmar. She kills it there.

    Thranduil did the right thing. He doesn't look like she's interested in Legolas, just smug and flattered that a prince took notice of her. And that's so weird and self centered taking into accord they know each other over 600 years and even implied Thranduil fostered her. It would have been more fascinating if they went with the adopted siblings route instead of this annoying one sided triangle. Also her entire romance is just cardboard copy of Gimil and Legolas but at least those two have some valid points.

  • @PoeticProse7

    Your explanation was interesting, but I think there's a different angle. Thranduil was an isolationist for the most part and while he would have had natural respect for Lorien, he probably would've written off Rivendell because of Elrond's questionable breeding. The film version says Legolas' mother died in battle. It is very likely that his protective father would have had even a peasant pledged to his son than another warrior who was headstrong. I think there's a hint of Thranduil seeing himself and his wife in the pair and it saddened, worried, and angered him.

    Thranduil doesn’t care about everyone outside of his territory, he just doesn’t. I kinda think that apart from his arrogance and pride, he’s telling tauriel not to pursue a relationship with his son because he doesn’t want legolas to go through what he went through. He could’ve put it a different way though to her, “ Tauriel. If my son asks for your hand in marriage I want you to turn him down. The grief I felt after losing my wife was almost overwhelming and I don’t want him to go through the same thing I did with his mother.”

    Tauriel never existed in any of the books. So the writers did what they wanted. Silvan elves were not looked down on by Thranduil, but even elves of royalty rarely married outside their caste. So, Legolas probably would have found a fellow Sindar elf to marry. Also, if Thranduil had allowed his son to form a relationship with Tauriel, we would not have had the love scenes of Tauriel and Kili. So it all worked out in the end.

      Yeah... As much as I hated the part where they stretched ONE book, I hate it when ppl hate on Tauriel bcs she wasnt in the books...
      I mean this book was written in the 1930s and did not have ANY female characters who have an actual part in the story...
      Think about the timing of the production... It was in the 2010s when people would treat a movie at least like it is wierd if it didnt have any female characters.
      It might have been still too early to have the courage to put a LGBT canonical character...or even write a script where there isnt at least one woman who throws away everything for a guy... so I guess they were just trying to please ppl in the end.
      If the Hobbit was made now, it would have included LGBT non book canon characters, more women character that are not involved in romance and are there move the plot forward, maybe even coloured people as far as Tolkeins rules can be stretched.
      A few main characters could even be gay like Leggy who I totally ship with males.
      They would also focus on standing out and appealing to the majority of broader minds.
      They would show a few scenes where racism is solved ie btwn elves and dwarves or smth.
      If youve read till here youre a legend.
      Thanx :]

    • @hiswayservicesblog9288
      @hiswayservicesblog9288 4 роки тому

      I honestly don't think it was mere passing feelings Tauriel had for Kili. Elves can love only once so they say, so I don't think they would easily just give that love out. Besides, I think she saw something in Kili, something that sparked her heart that no one else did. Evangeline Lilly said that Tauriel found this spark of life that had been missing for so long with the Mirkwood Elves, it reignited her about life, and she was determined to protect that living fire, that light.

  • @Melomaniac1956
    @Melomaniac1956 9 місяців тому +3

    In truth the Sindarin Elves (Thranduil and Legolas etc) did not consider the Silvan Elves 'lowly' at all; in fact the Sindar admired the Silvan Elves' more simple and rustic way of living and adopted the Silvan language, customs and even names. In return the Silvan Elves granted the Sindarin Elves lordship over them and the Greenwood. The Sindar might have been more inclined to marry amongst themselves but not for any stuck-up or purist reasons.
    I think at this stage Legolas was approaching the point when marriage was no longer on the cards for him. He was 1,900 years old here and Elves typically married (for love) early in life because their libido wanes as time goes on. Tauriel was just 600 here so she still had time for that sort of thing; I think Thranduil was doing her a kindness by putting to rest any notion of the two pledging themselves to each other

    I like how Thranduil is like 'I don't care about the other lands'.Reminds me of my relationship in my class.I don't know what's their problem about me,I hadn't anything wrong or bad to them.Then I realized that most of them uses me from their grade.like for an example a group project about art(which I'm good at) I will do all the work and their like texting about where will they go,a mall or something and get equal grade..I don't like unfairness so I talk to the teach and said I will talk to them and give you extra grade...
    Since then I don't care about them because of their attitudes,for an example they were assigned in some related art in stuff,they were actually hearing out like 'what are we going to do!' Or 'If only someone here is go at art'.
    Then my schoolmate was like 'aren't ya Hanna help 'em?'
    I simply was like 'My other classmates are not my concern'...Then he got the reference and I was ended up being called Thranduil by him that day...
    So for anyone who has the same situation as me .Just imagine your a bad ass elven king him self.Pleas take note I'm not like a attention whore on the internet who wants pity from other people OK.... NO OFFENCE

      To be honest, I found it very refreshing that in The Hobbit elves were depicted as being imperfect. It always bugged me that Tolkien seemed to portray elves as being perfect in LotR.

    I doubt Tauriel can handle the orc army and the darkness in the Dol Guldur. It took the three strongest person in Middle Earth coming together to them away temporarily.
    Also, when he said "Legolas grown very fond of you." Tauriel's smile faded.
    And he warns"Do not give him hope when there is none." cuz he realized she didn't love his son.
    well, he mourns the death of his people's silvanelf and leading the soldiers to defend them.
    after all, who said "lowly silvan elf" is not Thranduil, but Tauriel.

    Tauriel’s expression of panic/confusion when Thranduil outright says he’s pretty sure Legolas is in love with her is so fucking funny to me. I don’t think her feelings for Legolas were ever romantic, so I read that as her just now realizing that his feelings ARE romantic and being like “oh fuck he’s right what do I do now-“

  • @18rumple
    @18rumple 10 років тому +82

    I can't say I like Tauriel. Idk why, she just seems over done, like she has no flaws or anything. She's a very typical sassy, badass girl in a movie with mostly men. No, I don't want weak female characters are all, but she just seems to perfect and all that.

    • @cseijif
      @cseijif 10 років тому +11

      we dont really see much of her.

    • @loljustice31
      @loljustice31 10 років тому +51

      I'll tell you what my beef is with her. Presumably she was added "so there would be an important female character." And yet, whenever there's an "important female character," she has to be young and cute, the cookie cutter "sweet and pretty" kind of girl which is basically fan service for guys. She's not there to make female audiences feel represented; she's there to let guys have something to look at. It was exactly what they did with Arwen in Lotr: she didn't have that big a role in the book, but in the films they made it seem like it was all about her. Liv Tyler didn't make female audiences feel they were represented or they could relate; she was there for guys to look at. Male characters can be old, have wrinkles, imperfections, hair loss, bodily fat, etc-- but if they have character and strength, they can still be "cool main characters."
      But that's never the case with females. Ever notice how despite saying they "want to have a female in the movies so that female audiences can relate," they will never give you an important female character with age, physical imperfections, bodily fat, wrinkles, etc, the way they do with men? Female heroines are consistently the same cookie cutter "young-looking and cute, nice girl." It's just annoying to look at. Boring females who are just fap material for guys aren't "empowering." I wonder how many people in the audience even realize it's possible for a female to be important without being young-looking.

    • @cseijif
      @cseijif 10 років тому +9

      Rainy Jane Have you really seen fat and ugly principal male characters?, are you saying to me a damn elf , the wisets and prettiest of all creatures , even when they are male, should be ugly for the sake of political correctness?Do you think men all over the world feel identifiying with the "all white/blonde/evidently nordic" cast?, what do you think middle easterns feel about how all the evil guys are of their skin tone, and based on their civilizations?dont be a drama queen, and accept it's a movie, of course tauriel is made to appeal to guys too, the movie is not about female empowerment, it's a goddamn epic with full of things, you dont see in reality.

    • @loljustice31
      @loljustice31 10 років тому +10

      cseijif I'd be happy if they had a female elf the same age and with the same wrinkles and bodily fat as the way they portray Elrond. Even Orlando bloom had put on a lot of weight since the LotR films, and no one thought he ought to lose it the way they make female actresses lose weight for roles.

    • @cseijif
      @cseijif 10 років тому +7

      Rainy Jane you know waht ahppened to elrond right? he was the most critiqued choice of actor, because of how ugly he was, and how elfs are "fair an beautifull".Even then, no elf has wrinkles or imperfections, that's the thing with them, they are inmortal, perfect beings, that's kind of "their catch".

    The poster of this video's text commentary is dead wrong. This is a movie designed for mass appeal, and the dialog is simple and direct and literal. Of course he is saying he doesn't want her and his son to be romantically linked. This may shatter the idea of elves as perfect beings in many people's view, but it brings them down a few notches and makes them more believable to know that yes, there is racism and class structure in elven society, despite their many abilities and talents. Elves are the first born and immortal and the most in tune with the world out of all of the free peoples. If any race would be prone to thinking they were superior, it would be the elves.

    In the end King Thranduil was 100% correct. Tauriel was so broken at those words of Thranduil's rejection , that she caught "love" on the rebound with a dwarf where there was no time to grow together or have any history and the very dwarves that dealt in dishonesty with Thranduil pulling him into a mess he had nothing to do with., Tauriel sides with and she ultimately commits treason in threatening King Thranduil's life as she even turned his own son against him, just to rescue one dwarf caring nothing about her own people. She was always putting others in middle earth first before King Thranduil's people who took her in in the first place and empowered her offering her a legacy. She was a total degenerate.

      thats like saying there must be compulsory loyalty in exchange for charity. I can't agree with that. they did not see eye to eye and what made the characters so compelling for me was that they each had very strong conviction and it makes sense why either of them would act the way they did.

    I just realized: Since the romance subplots in _Lord of the Rings_ were based off of Tolkien's relationship with his wife, I think the same thing can go for this.
    When Tolkien fell in love with Edith, his gaurdian found out and told Tolkien that he would not be allowed to continue seeing her until he turned 21. So I guess you could say that Thranduil here is doing a bit of the same thing, since Legolas is apparently way older than Tauriel, who's 600-- or, to be more specific, like the uploader said, it was probably for political reasons. I don't think he was being an a**hole, I think he knew what he was doing, although not fully telling Tauriel his idea. :p
