That is Earth years: in the prologue Edgar Rice Burroughs says captain Carter joined the army at the start of the American Civil War, which was in 1861, then returned fifteen or sixteen years later (the last ten years of which he was on Mars), and 'died' in 1886, though that 'dying' was actually him returning to Mars.
I enjoy re-listening to this book every couple of years.
