This game hit that graphics sweet-spot to where it doesn't even look out of place with games released today. Was way ahead of its time and is still so much fun to play.
The playlist is so damn good. This is a top 3 tekken game for me. 3, tag, and 4 were my childhood. That snow level music, and the intro song still get played frequently by me. One of the best soundtracks ever IMO
I remember this was the first & only game I had when I first got a PS2. I must’ve been like 7/8 years old & I cannot tell you how happy I was that I could play as Kazuya!
Yooooo, chill on Tekken Tag Staff Roll. Not gonna lie, listening to it is a child along with the endings was white noise to me. But the first time I heard it in full from start to finish I thought it was absolutely masterful how the song built up from the start to the iconic theater part of the song and broke down at the finish. The way the kicks and snares hit like a production pattern by one of hip hop's GOATed beatmakers Timbaland, man. Plus I'm a sucker for violins which is why Ogre's theme is a very close second. Best Tekken soundtrack and most nostalgic Tekken for me.
Great review. And I agree! Loved TekkenTag Tournament and that goddamn bowling game had no reason to slap so hard. I think I played that more then the fighting itself! I always thought you could unlock the good Doctor when getting only strikes and taking him out with a bowling ball or some weird shit like that. Some urban myth in pre-internet times (for me atleast, we didn't have the internet just yet).. ahhh the good old days. I always picked Roger for the bowling. Since he was easy to aim with.
It's so great to see that there are other people who prefer tekken tag over the other tekken games. I think I spent more time in tekken bowl than I did the actual fighting parts. A thing you didn't mention (or you did and I missed it lol) but is pretty cool is that there are hidden characters in the game. Like when you select Devil with the start button he becomes Angel, start on Eddy Gordo and you get Tiger. And both have their own endings, which is really cool.
I also love to hear from other people who enjoy the same games I like :) I don't think I mentioned the hidden characters here but I talked about them in my Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 reviews. It's so cool that they also were included in Tekken Tag.
My favorite Tekken is a bit of a hard one for me. I would say TTT is definitely up there. But I would say 5 or 7 is my favorite of the mainline. 5 Had a very high skill ceiling, but I appreciated how unapologetic it was. And 7 due to "6 didn't do enough to make it feel fresh. It wasn't a bad game." But I really hope 8 is great, especially as we are seeing Jun Kazama come back.
I played this with my Dad too even with our friends before. The only thing I like about it was the camera to get a better view how some of the characters dodge, throw, etc. on gameplay. My favorite about Tekken Bowl was seeing the strike screen. I always like seeing Mokujin doing victory pose if he's using the same one of his partner.
9:30, I'm not sure if you were referring to the Changs ending as to being pointless. But if that's the case: Both their endings actually tell a story 🧐... You see, in Michelle's ending, she can be seen all crawled up, thoughtful, and looking almost sad while she's staring at the ocean. That's when Julia, her daughter, joins her. Julia looks happy and relaxed and ends up enjoying the sunshine after sitting next to her mother. The episode ends with Michelle looking over to Julia. In Julia's ending, Michelle is seemingly much more relaxed and starts talking to Julia, who enjoys the final rays of sunshine before getting up and stretching her arms. Michelle remains on the floor, relaxed while once again staring at Julia before the screen turns black. You see, this entire story is actually a summary of the Changs journey. Michelle's father was killed by Heihachi in the first tournament, and her mother was kidnapped by Kazuya in the next. She has gone through some really traumatic events in young years. All of this is conveyed by her sorrowful expression and her endlessly staring at the ocean. The only thing taking her away from these thoughts is Julia, whom she raised with love and who came in the form of a blessing into Michelles' life. Seeing Michelle being relaxed in Julia's ending implies that she's the reason why she can now look forward and move on from those horrible experiences. Instead she can now finally focus on love. Julia rising up and stretching is a symbol for her taking on her mothers legacy and carrying over the Chang playstyle in the series since Julia replaced Michelle in all games after that. So there's much more to it, but understandibly not very easy to figure out, especially if the player isn't all too invested with the Tekken lore. But I Hope this cleared things up 😊
Xiaoyu's track is my fave! I keep that track handy at all times. In general I love this game's soundtrack. Such a vibe! I agree about the endings theme. It just doesn't fit. Loved tekken bowl, and LOL I tend to keep one of the Changs on my team too (I main them so that's one thing). This is definitely a classic game to me. Between this, the TR1 video, and opening the Sonic CD video to hear my fave track (Collision Chaos Good Future)...I'm enjoying your content so far!
With Kazuya in Smash Bros and watching your Tekken reviews has me intrigued to get back into Tekken. My only experience playing this game was limited to the arcade. And years ago I bought the game yard sale only to find out that the disc wouldn’t work. It would start, but couldn’t get past the intro it was the weirdest thing, I have no idea what the original owner did to it, but I think I want to try to get this game again.
The new generation glow-ups of the Tekken 2 characters were all absolutely amazing. New stances, new and improved combos and command lists, costumes, endings... It was like a Greatest Hits compilation with all the old favourites lovingly restored with modern day technology
I totally understand the nostalgia you have for Tekken Tag Tournament, it's the same for me. I still remember when I first saw the game in the arcade back in 1999 as a kid. and how blown away I was at the concept of it. Unfortunately the booth was always crowded with lots of people because so many people wanted to play it (And Marvel Vs Capcom 2 lol) so I didn't get to play it a lot in the beginning until my family got a PS2 in late 2001 and the game shortly after and I was even more blown away by how the graphics looked. IMO, it's one of the best looking PS2 games and they still hold up today in a charming kind of way. I thought it was great to be able to have all the main characters in one game and see characters who knew each other have little interactions together, it helped breathe in some more life to them even if the game wasn't canon to the actual story. And I can so relate with the watching of all the ending cutscenes but being annoyed of the song they played. Honestly that song only should've been used for Jin's ending as it fits that one best. It's a shame they didn't at least create individual ending themes for the characters. And yeah some of the endings were quite pointless. I love Julia and Michelle but the lack of voice acting really ruined Julia's ending lol. I also agree that the music was pretty good in this game though I still slightly prefer Tekken 3 and 2's OSTs more. I like techno and electronic to a degree but I'm a rocker at heart so Tekken 3's soundtrack will always have that hold on me and I still like the experimentation qualities that Tekken 2 had with it's music so yeah, TTT's ost isn't my most favorite but it's still a good one in it's own right. And I'm so glad I'm not the only one who played Tekken bowl so much back in the day. My brother and I would play that mode a lot. The best part is when they'd play Xiaoyu's stage music for it, it fit the atmosphere of it perfectly. Also the reason why I think they made the bowling function look the way it did for the Jack robots and Yoshitmistu was to emphasis their robotic sides, at least for the Jack robots anyway. With Yoshimitsu, maybe to emphasize the cybernetics part of his character. I dunno, I thought it was cool character lroe concept for them haha. I personally didn't mind that they had 1 on 1 mode because while it was fun playing with the tag mechanics, it was also nice to be able to play the game traditionally as well imo. Overall the game was amazing back in the day and it still holds up today as well. Like I'm sure the younger generation would enjoy it if they gave it a chance but it's cool to find other people who got to experience the game back in it's heyday and still have fondness for it. :)
Thanks for another great comment! It's cool to hear other peoples stories about games I love. Yeah, voice acting really could have helped! :D I totally get why one would prefer Tekken 3's soundtrack. It's simply amazing. I love both rock and electronic, but in this case the TTT soundtrack has had a bigger impact on me. I'm also glad to hear that other people enjoy Tekken Bowl as much as I do. It will always have a special place in my heart.
@@GFrom Haha fair enough. I guess Tekken 3's soundtrack had a bigger impact on myself in all fairness lol. And yeah, Tekken Bowl was truly something and it was neat that they brought it back for Tekken Dark Resurrection haha.
I like that you compared PS2 version with the PS3 one, I posted this in your community notes, but in case you missed it, for Tekken 5, PS2 version has tons of content missing from expansion AND the PSP ver. for whatever reason has many more modes than the PS3 Dark Resurrection "Online" Edition. For T6 can just use PS3 and don't bother with others tho PSP port is solid despite lower graphics.
Tekken 3 was my favorite game until Tag came along. But I loved 3 so much that I loved that the arcade version has Tekken 3 graphics, it's also a little faster then the PS2 version. So I prefer the arcade version of TTT1. TTT2 Arcade is my favorite game ever made till this day. 9-15-23

The entire game is underrated being able to use two characters for different combos and outcomes is crazy let alone the fact the mechanics in the game are so deep. Tag battle is where the game shine as it shows all of its glory its about preserving its about strategy its about who counters who its about who you need to use first then last and who lives and dies. Everyone needs to check this game out i've played this game since I was 5 and honestly its one of the best fighting games I've played of all time and I've played many. Not to mention it is probably the most technical Tekken game that I know of because it matters who you pick and it matters which order you pick for example Heihachi and Paul are good rushers while Jun and Lei are really good technical but if I put Paul first with Law they can gain rage first and get double damage while I choose Heihachi next to Jun they get a special grab and they're good as switching playstyles going defensive or offensive. What about picking Kazuya who is quicker than Jin and instead of picking Devil pick Angel to remove the change lag the game is honestly amazing.
Personally I was a bit sad Dr Bosconovich wasn't playable in Tag. He felt to left out because he had his own wacky weird style that sometimes just worked. In the right hands he could be a menace just like most other characters.
Ling Xiaoyu was also a character I had a crush on. Even today, if I am honest. I wonder how she'll be presented in Tekken 8, if she's there. Tekken Tag Tournament is a great game that I occasionally revisit. And no matter how many times I play it, I always enjoy it.

@@KasumiRINA the Namco systems were more powerful than PS1. That's why the first 3 games looked slightly better in the arcade version. And Tag 1 couldn't be on PS1 because PS1 wasn't advanced enough to hold 4 characters at a time
in a game where all characters look the same, I find it weird how anyone would dislike Gon, Anna and Dr B. They look so different than the other characters. 😂 Gon is a dinosaur, He’s tiny and changes the way you play against him, most fans say Anna is still the only interesting female character in Tekken and DR. B is too unique since he’s old and just like Gon, he changes the way you play the game.
Tekken Tag 1 is the best Tekken game. Plays almost the same as Tekken 3, but with a bigger roster of fighters. Nothing else really needs to be said. The fact that it's non-canon is irrelevant. The best KOF games are the non-canon "all the fighters are here" KOF 98 and 2002.

Tekken Tag and Tekken Tag 2 are my favorites too
