The filtered textures and high resolution make the game SO much easier on the eyes! I never understood people playing in low-res to "experience it the way it was meant to be", no. Not only devs worked with limitations and would have made it better looking if they could, the old versions were played on CRT monitors that made everything blurrier, you were never seeing sharp pixels like you would when emulating DOS version on an LCD screen... it's just... less eye straining to play it the way you did.
Yeah. This pseudo-nostalgia is so stupid. People really think playing an old game on modern tv is the same as playing on a crt. And then they say "Damn, this game is ugly as hell!"
Your content with these TR reviews keep me coming back to rewatch 😊 your stories, personality, editing, voice, commentary, it's all very easy on the ears and eyes. TR Unfinished Business is so cool. I have lots of memories of fully playing it through about 8 or 9 years ago when I was 18/19 during a very transformative period in my life. I had already been a major Tomb Raider fan my whole life up to that point, but it was the first time I fully played it through and it gave me the same great vibes as The Lost Artifact, which is my favorite TR game, but with that super atmospheric, nostalgic TR1 vibe as well. The level design can be a bit much, but man they designed some incredible levels with this one. The Egyptian levels have seriously memorable visuals and level design. I always really loved the night time outdoor section, and all the spiked pits around the sand. Feels so perfectly Tomb Raider to play. Then the Atlantis sections is just balls to the walls, but still looks awesome. I just love the effort they put into the expansion packs. Thanks for covering them so well with your videos!
Oh man, so glad you ended up covering this. The classic TR games are all fantastic in their own rights, but their expansions are the true highlights. They take everything from their base games and crank them up to 11. Truly immaculate level design. It is disappointing that they don't have cut scenes since there's some interesting things going on in them, but with the development teams for the expansions being so small (I think it was like, 4 people) it's understandable.
There's a shortcut in the Atlantis level. And the funny thing is - I found it before I found the main path, and I was like "wtf? Why is this level so short??"
Happened to me too. Luckily at that point i already had the habit of leaving at least one save per level in the list, at the stage beginning (which i keep doing to this day), so i could immediately replay it.
Regarding the boulder puzzle in the Hive, I noticed on repeat playthrough that you can just jump on the tiles with a design on it and no boulders are triggered.
@@GFrom Yep! Keep in mind that it has save crystals tho and some enemies were swapped, like some mummies became panthers, to get around some memory limitations of the PS1 version.
I never knew the expansions existed until the announcement of TR 1-3 getting remastered and re-released. Super excited to play, especially on the Switch!
I'm currently playing the remasters, and having just finished the first I jumped straight into the DLC and... I swear the level progression is backwards..! I started at the Atlantean Stronghold, and then the Hive, and I've only just reached the second set of Egypt levels after doing so!
@@GFrom Wait, really? I thought Atlantis was chronologically the last place Lara goes to during this adventure? It almost felt to me like the main game ends, and then we're just kinda backtracking on our journey, starting with Atlantis since... We're already there XD
"Atlantean Stronghold" kicks off right after "The Great Pyramid" (The level even starts with Lara sliding down the slope that was the last scene in the main game) In "Return to Egypt" she returns to "City of Khamoon" but now its flooded. This is after everything that happened in Atlantis 👍
I hope those working on the remasters see your reviews and make the necessary changes to improve the overall experience, especially the continuity: Atlantean Stronghold should be the first level if it's picking up directly from the end of the first game!
These are brilliant, PS player here so I never got my hands on these, though given how scared the base games made little me, I would not have been able to face that Atlantis mutant room! (probably struggle now too 😂) so thank you! Would you ever review some of the fan made TRLE’s at all?
@@GFrom very true, certainly if you plan 13 and on also, and I know you aren’t solely a Tomb Raider channel. I’m enjoying the blasts from the pasts though, and there is clearly a lot of love and care you put into this content 🙌
Hey Seth, thank you! As a matter of fact have have seen and enjoyed a bunch of your videos too. Just saw I hadn't subscribed yet. You've got a new subscriber ;)
Oh boy I remember how hard it was to capture footage of games back then. Fraps only worked on high end machines, there weren't really good alternatives either.
Yeah I am playing the Remastered Collection and was thinking about playing this Addon.... but I'm skipping it, if there's not a single voice line and no Story in there screw that. Specially since it seems like they changed the order to make more chronological sense in the remastered collection and starting the fortress of Atlantis without any weapons or medkits is just insane.
I'm loving the remaster version, and this may be blasphemous but I *hate* Atlantis. I hate everything about it, so I used the level skip cheat because I just was not having fun. I love, love, love Egypt though and I would have rather had some extra dlc levels in Greece or even in the Incan temple than being forced to go back to Atlantis. Luckily the level skip cheat works in the dlc as well :D
When TR first came out on the PS1, i remember everyone thinking it was groundbreaking and the graphics were amazing. Looking back at it now, it looks f#####g awful lol. Nostalgia is a great thing, and dangerous. I play on a Nano91.... amazing TV for gaming, all the features i could ask for, for the Series X and PS5. However, i made the mistake of playing BF4 and oh my god! even that looks absolutely shocking. As for revisiting OLD classics like Desert Strike and Syphon Filter, forget it, even with the correct adaptors, the game is forced too stretch on a 65'' screen.... there is nothing you can do about it, apart from buying an adaptor that increases the texture quality and reduces the screen from being stretched..... if you want one of these that you can use with any older consoles, it is quite a bit of money and i don't think fully worth it for how bad the older games still look.
@@Phantron Anniversary doesn't include the Unfinished Business expansion levels, or half the levels from the original base game for that matter. Anniversary is less of a remake and more "inspired" by the original game. Lara is in it, but other than that it barely resembles the original game.
We have to agree that atlatean extension levels are pretty much what was missing from.the original game meanwhile egyptian levels are as pointless as they are cool
Just experienced these levels for the first time ever through the remastered version. The egyptian levels are really good to be honest. But the Atlantis levels... meh.
I hate Unfinished Business. The complete overuse of the Atlantean monsters made me quit after the first 15 minutes. Tank controls in small spaces do not give the player the maneuverability to destroy enemies that run circles around you and can kill you with a few hits. UB is easily Core Design's worst work and have no reason to exist.

my man the unfiltered textures look crisper give more detail and crt‘s were wuite sharp
Gold was the version I had as a kid, but all these years I had no idea it was a rarity. Now I'm REALLY glad I kept my copy.

great review and overview
This brings back so many memories.

The order on the remastered version was changed. I found that very perplexing
It makes sense from a timeline perspective, so I'm glad they did it 👍
Finally a gman vid

I can't say it. I keep saying "A meow-meow has a meow-meow in its meow meowouth"
The original DOS version of Unfinished Business DOES have music. This is the only error in your video. Well done.
I like the intro song, where's the full version?
Doesn't exist...yet. Maybe that's something Patrick and I could work on.

Amazing video. Really hope you cover Golden Mask and Lost Artefact! Especially Lost Artefact.
Stay tuned for Season 3 ;)

So.... any plans to do one on Chronicles?
Sometime, yes.
GOG version is another good choice, maybe even better since it works out of the box.
It seems gog does not provide unfinished business

No, only official releases :)
@@GFrom Really? You've never been tempted to try any?
Not really 🤷♂️ There are too many other games I want to play.

Have to say I got to the boulder room and said ‘I’m out’. That’s just ridiculous
is there a reason to play this after the remake?
It wasn't remade.
