I want them to put stuff like torghast in the game but it's completely optional sidecontent for cosmetics like mage tower. Everything feels like a chore in wow because everything is mandatory and time gated.

    • @vygylate
      @vygylate 2 роки тому +42

More mage tower-esque, less grindy and RNG. It’s fun to have solo challenges that you can do on your own and pace yourself, while being rewarded. In other MMOs they have similar content and it’s seen as a pinnacle of player skill (eg Maelstorm Arena in Elder Scrolls, Inferno in Old School RuneScape). It just can’t be randomly grindy, otherwise it doesn’t hold the same value.
Mage Tower was a considerable time sink to learn and complete on multiple characters, it lead to something very apparent in game and worked well because it wasn’t mandatory, but it was a show of skill.

And he'd do these sitdowns. I remember when the sparkle pony was added and Asmon called it back then saying "I don't think this inherently bad but people can see it coming a mile away where they put unique skins on the store and boring ones in the game." etc etc. I love all of Asmons content but these type of videos definitely hit the nostalgia bone.

Many of the players who currently play WoW do not know or did not get to play the real Vanilla-TBC-WOTLK.
Where none of these systems existed.
You reached max level, went to dungeons with friends and raised your reputation level and collected gear at the same time.
The only thing that slowed down your progress was the reputation, which was often done while you were gearing up. And if raiding was your thing then Attunement was done on the road. You didn't have to do anything extra.
That left a lot of time on your hands to do everything else in the game. Or change characters. Or come back next patch.
It was a stage where the game respected your time as a player and where having fun was healthier for the mind as well.
In TBC if you stopped playing 3 months into the expansion and came back 5 months before WOTLK then your character was going to be able to do the same content because it didn't lose power.
With the current Seasons, if in S1 you can do +15 then by the time S3 comes out your character will probably barely be able to do +5.
That's not healthy for the game or the players.

    • @Scruffed
      @Scruffed 2 роки тому

As someone who has played WoW since Vanilla, and as someone who isn't particularly fond of the progression systems in Shadowlands, I really, really hope that the developers don't take the game back in a Vanilla-WotLK direction in terms of the content's difficulty and especially in dungeon/raid design. I quite enjoy M+ and Mythic raids, and the change of seasons (particularly the start of every new season) is usually when I enjoy the game the most. In TBC/WotLK I only had the raids to look forward to as the dungeons got stale pretty fast, and even the raids didn't feel as enjoyable as any raid they've made since Hellfire Citadel (except Tomb of Sargeras and Emerald Nightmare).

    • @Shaurize
      @Shaurize 2 роки тому

      @@Scruffed
      I know what you mean.
But there is something to keep in mind. Dungeons and raids, especially dungeons, were a good way to get materials for professions and also an alternative way for the casual player to get gear.
Maybe not as good as raid gear and not as fast/efficient to get, but it was an easy way and one knew that after X days or Badges one could buy a piece of gear.
I mean, even as an End Game player, you saw the dungeons as useful and the casual player was doing them with or without dailies to get Badges.
The moment Blizzard killed the professions and eliminated the badge system, the dungeons lost value.
What's the point of entering a dungeon if you don't get anything of value? Not even for the most casual player.
That was one of Blizzard's mistakes. One of the big ones.
This pushed them to design what we know as M+. A way to give value to the dungeons throughout the expansion.
      The idea is not bad.
But it is a VERY DIFFERENT system to the Raids.
In one you can spam dungeons non-stop as long as you have time.
On the other you have the raids, sessions that .... would vary depending on the group, but anywhere between 2-8 hours.
Any M+ has an average duration of 25 minutes. You can do 3 per hour. And if you are lucky you can get 3 items per hour or more if someone trades you.
And the raid ? The average is 1.2 items per ID per week.
      They are incompatible.
People are forced to do M+ just to progress faster in Raid.
I think that totally defeats the purpose of raiding.
I'm not saying to remove M+ or nerf them in any way.
But they should do SOMETHING, anything, to make raiding more attractive.
Just in case, mounts or cosmetics do not count as "something".
What the player wants is power. An advantage over others.
Tier can be an option. But we all know the low drop that Raids have in Shadowlands. We also can't forget the disaster that is personal loot and the restriction on trade because of Item Lvl makes this even slower.
Even if they add Group Loot, it doesn't change anything.
Great Vault is GATCHA by another name. People want something straightforward.

    • @Scruffed
      @Scruffed 2 роки тому

@@Shaurize Even though Group Loot is not technically Master Loot, you can bet that any guild that would choose to use Master Loot over Personal Loot is going to require everyone to have RCLootCouncil and to trade whatever item they get to whomever the Loot Council or raid leader deems fit, which to me seems like an undistinguishable outcome to what you'd get with Master Loot.
As someone who both raids and M+s for its own sake, I can't help but 100% disagree with the goal of making raiding more rewarding than M+. I'd wager that a bigger portion of the player base prefers M+ as content than raids, even when the raids are very well designed, and I think that's ok. I don't think M+ players should feel forced to raid to gain an advantage over other M+ers, and the amount of M+ you're expected to do as a Cutting Edge raider (which 95%+ of raiders aren't) is frankly pretty low and doing a +15 for a player who can clear all Mythic raid content should require very little effort, those who have lower aims in raiding could probably get away with doing no M+ at all or very, very little.
I do agree however that there should be some deterministic way (it could well be something like the Valor point system that existed in WotLK) to get particular dungeon items rather than having to farm the same dungeon many times.

    • @Shaurize
      @Shaurize 2 роки тому

      @@Scruffed
Ah, but at no time did I say it must be better than M+.
They must be on equal terms.
The amount of items you can get in M+ is very different from Raids.
Also, the amount of people one must gather is higher as well. We are not talking about the difficulty of the content. We are talking about the difficulty of gathering people who know how to play and who can play in that schedule.
M+ has a lot more freedom in that sense.
Even if you can find 19 other people who know how to play and can play on the same schedule, you still face the barrier of low drop and trade restrictions.
By nature it is obvious that people are going to choose the path of least resistance.
      That path is M+
      What can be done ?
I think the solution is to add 2 things:
      1) Badges of Justice
      2) Extra chance of loot (like we had I think from MoP to BFA)
And Blizzard would have to balance them well.
In BFA I got tired of collecting ...... this currency that I don't remember the name, to buy armor. You could do it for less but it was random.
This can't be random, but it can't take 2 months to buy a single piece.
I think one week per off-part is fine. Pieces like chest-shoulders-pants-head should be 2 weeks.
If the weapon is 2H then 3 weeks. If it's 1h then a week and a half.
Trinkets could be 3 weeks just like the weapon, it can change the game in a very important way.
Equipping a character only with badges should take 12-15 weeks.
That can perfectly go down to 2 months if one is lucky with drops or trades.
It doesn't seem unreasonable to me when the normal duration of a patch is 4-6 months.
And the extra chance should be 3 per week (only in raid).
These numbers can always be adjusted to the number of bosses per Raid or per patch duration.
Or by whatever is more reasonable.

I think that's the biggest reason why they currently sit at less than 10% of their peak playerbase. The funny thing is by them doing all the things they have done to "artificially extend game time" made people play less. They made you need to do 100 different things that take a while to be viable. For the majority of players when they switched to play an alt like they normally do in every expansion had to go through that again and said screw it and left, otherwise alot would still being playing alts to this day.
I also hope that if dragonriding ends up being good they bring it into future expansions. the key to adding an expansion defining feature, is to design it with the future in mind. Example, the garrisons, they fucked up by making it only useful to warlords of draenor. Doing something like Garrisons right, they'd need to make its usefulness more "general". Bonuses that help you everywhere in the world. Allow you to choose the location of your garrison, not just within WoD zones, but in other expansion zones, or old world as well. Basically, treat it like housing. Future expansions, add additions to the garrisons, and new locations to move your garrison to. Locations to move to, that requires no explaining, but like, lets say garrisons got additions in legion. Maybe they add new buildings with new uses, like a warlock circle, that lets you visit the circle to have warlocks summon a demon you can fight for unique rewards, New customization features for them, themed around new legion aesthetics, like nightborne structures and banners and stuff, or even as simple as just making the profession buildings able to train and assist with the current level of profs
This isn't a wishlist or something, just the kind of thinking they'd need to adopt to stop wasting all this effort on features that get thrown out the very next expansion. Dragonriding seems to be a good example. It's something that can VERY easily be adapted into a broader system and carried over into future expansions. They could let us use the new flight mechanics on regular mounts (imagine doing the swoops and dives and shit in a flying machine), and it's VERY easy to just...let us continue using the feature in future expansions. It's not something that's chained to the dragon isles.
The biggest tragedy of blizzard's old thinking is torghast. A system with a lot of potential, and showed how much potential it DID have with the updates it received, despite never reaching it. But now it never will, because they made the mistake of basing the entire damn thing around the shadowlands. There's no torghast tower in the dragon isles, and there won't be a torghast tower in the next expansion's new continent. Even for those who WANT torghast to be iterated on and carried over to future expansions, it very simply can not. Maybe they can create a new place to base a SIMILAR system within (located in azeroth so you don't have the same problem as something based in outland or shadowlands), and I think they should, but the likelihood that they will is low. They see torghast as a failure.

Then they could set it up where the whole party is leashed at the starting point until the counter goes off. In regards to earlier expansions like TBC and WotLK not having big new flagship features like Garrisons or Artifacts... I mean, they really didn't need to. The game was at its absolute peak back then, there was no reason to re-invent the wheel. Just keep pumping out more of the same and people will be happy. And for about ten years they were.
I'm not sure that this approach holds up these days. I don't know if the base game of WoW is gripping enough without something like Artifacts, or even something like m+ completely shaking everything up. I'm curious af to see if a new raid and a couple new dungeons are enough to keep people hooked for 6 months. And if after that... another raid and another couple new dungeons will do the trick then too. I'm slightly afraid that after close to 20 years, the base game of WoW that hasn't really been iterated on for the last... well, 20 years, might not be good enough to holf people's attention for 6 months.
I would love more stuff like islands, Torghast, Warfronts or Mage Tower... but most of those systems were jut shit... and never really made good... and then tossed away. I could totally see these being permanent additions to the game... but for some reason they just aren't. And now we're going into a new expansion and the only new thing is... my mounts flying differently. I'm worried.

The only things that will save WoW at this point are:
    1. Literally _everything_ being fully account-wide without restriction.
    2. Never, _ever_ , have any form of temporary or borrowed power ever again for any reason.
    3. All player power, in every form, is completely not time-gated. If someone wants to grind something out, let them. It doesn't affect anyone negatively. Also, side note, completely remove any additional gear RNG other than drop rate - no titanforging, no rolling for slots or extra stats, etc.
    4. All "side" content, like future Torghasts or Mage Towers or reputations, are all 100% _only_ cosmetics and have literally no player power in them at all.
    5. No more in-game store shit and no more 6 month sub shit. Put _everything_ cosmetic in it into the game proper as rewards for difficult solo or group content. Also, greatly reduce the prices for most other services - all they're doing is changing some code, there's literally no cost other than a few minutes of labor to them, so there's no reason for those services to cost more than a few bucks.
    6. As Asmon says, _stop solely designing around the top and bottom 5% groups_ . Literally nobody cares if world first raiders or MDI players no-life the game, everyone cares when you artificially overly limit everything and design the entire game around them. Designing the game around only the top or bottom 5% _will lose the other 90% of players_

Other expacs were received really well without a big expac feature, not to mention classic as well, removing them and going back to basics is I agree the exact right move.
crafting looks great but I feel they missed a trick, LW, BS, tailoring could have been all about transmog, making recolours of legacy sets, first having to get the recipes from the relevant content, mixing in mats from legacy content and mats from the new content(this includes dungeon, raiding and levelling sets).
Engineering could have been all about utility items for other classes, along with all the new features added to crafting that would be interesting.

Personally I don't give any weight to any of the first impressions with the expansion because they are all based on basically just one feature, and that feature is not going to be really relevant in any of the endgame content. Once the novelty wears off and people finish the open world content is when expansions are actually tested and at this point nobody knows anything.

Last few expansions all where with time gating elements. And you are right that started with the garisons.
Its the most horrible way to keep people loging in on a weekly basis to "progress". From a business plan point of few i can understand it looks good. But infact it has the opposit effect.
People dont like the be stringt along. At some point they get bored and lose interrest. Time gating content seems logical you offer less for more, but you eventualy drive away people that are not going to wait!
Now apperantly if i hear this correct they finaly learned their lesson. A little to late though if you ask me. Also by now they demolished their traditional way of progression through tier sets. They ruind the way of consuming content. And they lost their way a long time ago. What will return for that? A fancy new trick like dragon riding adds nothing!!

I like the idea of Dragon racing as an annual event. If they were able to somehow keep adding the mechanic to other dragon-like flying mounts, it would be nice and eventually, maybe you could use any flying mount with the dragon flying mechanic. It gives the flying mechanic a lot more control and ability to cover more ground, so players might fly everywhere, instead of taking portals and taxis. Could also change race location every year to bring people to existing zones that have been unused for a long time. I wish they'd do more like that, really. They should open a fairground in Azshara or something. They just need to age the existing zones over time and make them relevant.

The big problem with Dragonflight is that yeah sure there's no obvious annoying power system(Covenants/Artifacts), or hoops you have to jump through to play the game(Visions/Islands/Torghast), but other than professions which we still need to see a lot from, they aren't making enough core improvements or changes to the game to warrant Dragonriding being the only feature in this expansion. Gear is boring, Mythic Plus is insanely toxic and not a fun idea of difficult small group content, and PVP has remained the same for a million years. The class gameplay is incredibly boring compared to some other MMOs and the talent trees have been very hit or miss in terms of interesting choices or changing up how the classes feel. The Devastation Evoker is insanely boring. Compare it to FF14's latest dps class in Reaper and you would think the Evoker came out 10 years ago, hell compare it to the Death Knight on release and it's not even close as interesting.
But I also understand Asmongold's bar for Dragonflight is a lot lower than mine. As long as the game isn't insanely annoying to play, he's going to be excited. Since he doesn't really engage with the core pillars of content, just adding new zones, levels, different looking gear is all he needs.
